• One of every three home Christmas tree fires are caused by

electrical problems.

• Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious.

• Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

• Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.

• Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.

• Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. • Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry.

24

The Dangers of Turkey Fryers

• Hot oil may splash or spill during the cooking. Contact between hot oil and skin could result in serious injury

• Turkeys must be completely thawed before placing in the fryer, because a partially thawed turkey will cause the oil to splatter causing serious burns

• Propane-fired turkey fryers must be used outdoors

• Consider a new type of “oil-less” turkey fryer

• Don’t leave gifts and purchased items unattended in plain view in your vehicle

• Record serial numbers/take photographs or video of valuables

• For extended absence, cancel mail or news paper deliveries, or have a trusted friend

pick those items up

• When putting your trash out, don’t leave boxes of newly purchased items where

others passing by can see

• Don’t advertise on social media sites when and where you are going for vacation.

• Ensure you lock all doors and windows when leaving your home regardless of how

long you will be gone.

Most crimes are committed because there is an opportunity.

Protect yourself and take the opportunity away.

National Influenza Vaccination WeekDec. 6-12 is National Influenza Vaccination Week, which is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination. BACH Patient Centered Medical Homes are offering the flu vaccine to their assigned patients during clinic hours. Flu vaccines can be given on a walk-in basis 30 minutes after your medical home opens and 45 minutes before your medical home closes. Patients may select to avoid longer wait times between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Patients may also receive the flu vaccine during scheduled well visit appointments. Active Duty Soldiers should follow their unit's guidance as to when and where they will receive their flu vaccine.

Community ForumBACH is scheduled to host a Facebook community forum Jan. 13 to discuss community concerns and areas of interest. Please submit your questions early by visiting the Blanchfield Facebook page- your feedback is greatly appreciated and we look forward to working with you!

44

Upcoming Events & ActivitiesNational Glaucoma Awareness Month Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steal sight without warning. Although the most common forms primarily affect the middle-aged and the elderly, glaucoma can affect people of all ages.Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. This nerve acts like an electric cable with over a million wires. It is responsible for carrying images from the eye to the brain. There is no cure for glaucoma—yet. However, medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. The appropriate treatment depends upon the type of glaucoma among other factors. Early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease.

Patient Advisory Council-BACH’s Patient Advisory Council meets every fourth Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Patient and Family Medical Resource Center. The goal of the council is to collaborate with patients to improve the quality of care provided at BACH. If you’re interested in attending, contact Courtney Purswell at 270-798-8158 or [email protected]
