Our club held its big Champ competition last weekend and we had lots of visitors from all over the North Island. Agility events are such wonderful social events, as well as being an opportunity to have rush after rush of adrenalin as you try to do your best on the Judges course. We had some lovely comments about Upper Hutt which has some big parks and the river, and also Harcourt Holiday park is great accommodation as it is next to a lovely park. There are some lovely venues for dog events all over NZ, we really are lucky that we get to see some really nice spots. We also got nice comments about the wonderful kids that we have at our Club, it is a credit to Nevenka and of course to the parents of these kids that they want to come and run their dogs, and help too!! The future of our sport looks great!!

~ NALA REPORTS ~

Top ‘Arf report – by Ann Kenny No report from Ann this month—we hope next month is a better month for her.

Central Report—by Mel Mankelow. Fielding Champ Our first big show with the new addition you wouldn’t believe how much stuff we had loaded in the ute. The weather was good but the grounds were really good the rain had made a huge difference. Some good results from the Mounties Deb & Cheeky and Jan & JJ. Jason had a great weekend coming 1st 2nd & 3rd in one Jumpers C and 1st & 3rd in the other all the dogs in B Jumpers now Amanda McKennie also had a great weekend getting places with her own dog Zip and also getting her 1st challenge, she also ran Dyson’s dogs and had a win in jumpers B with Rumer. Peter & Quick had a great

show winning both Intermediates and a Senior what a weekend. Natasha and Sage also getting 5th place in Senior. The Judges were all dressed up sat morning all looking great, shame they didn’t dress up on Sunday as I heard Dyson had some very tight lycra pants to wear.

Cambridge & Wag Ribbon Always a really good finish to the year we weren’t able to camp this year but we stayed with Ali, which was great thanks Ali. Great turn out for the show big en-tries. Some good runs all weekend Petra & Bode 2nd in Novice also Jude & Lace 2nd in both Jumpers they are starting to do some great stuff in the ring now. JJ winning Intermediate and Pleze 2nd in Senior with Chelsea & Flash 1st. Cambridge always has a great novelty event and this year was no different it was a fun course with a circle of jumps around the edge and tunnels in the centre. There were some very fast dogs, Alex even running one of Chelsea’s dogs so nice to see her running maybe she should have a go more often. I paired Indi with Deb & Pleze just for a laugh as I had only just started running a dog again this week-end the first run was good but we were misinformed when to start so we had to re run, 2nd run also a good one but the timers didn’t go by this stage I was just about to drop but out we went again this time all was well and we ended up winning. There was no way I could have run again !!!!. Off for the Christmas break what will we all do with no shows for a few weeks, some information I have been given Lou Baker & Tess have 218 clear rounds this year out of 246 WOW, also she managed 56 consecutive clear rounds at one point this year go Lou & Tess good luck for 2010

Tokoroa Champ Here we go again another year full of Agility as always we start the year with Tok not our usual weather this year frosty mornings and a chill in the air during the day. The new grounds are great so much room although I must say it didn’t feel like Tokoroa it’s always a cosy show being on the small grounds but the new grounds are fab. Although one bad point of the weekend poor JJ cutting her foot open some glass by the bin was to blame. I’m sure she will recover soon and be back out there. The show ran really well with some good results Judy Casey having a great run with Tui coming 2nd in Starters and 2nd in Novice also Diana Bird having an amazing run with Bounce so nice to see Diana back in the ring. Chelsea done a great job winning all Intermediates, seniors and Jumpers A amaz-ing weekend for her again if only we could all get results like that. Also great to see Alan & Elaine with Knight back in the ring he did some fantas-tic runs. The Bushes also coming away with some good placings with Bindi & Ohce. Nick Chesters jumpers B was a great course all wing jumps was great to run even if I did make a hard job of it. Ngaire had a great run with Risky really great to watch. Knight won it with a fantastic run. The wing jumps make the rng look so

5

much better. The novelty theme was dead famous this year with Martin Bush dressed as a woman for another year I believe he was Marylin the blonde bomb-shell he seems to like dressing up should we be worried I wonder !!!!!

Norwest Champ Well a wet start for Norwest this year, which is a first normally, one of the hottest shows we spent most of the weekend under cover of the tent. So didn’t get to watch many runs there were some good results from Sue & Cookie with 2 plac-ings in Starters, Jan and JJ winning Intermediate and also 3rd in Senior, Jude hav-ing some good runs with Gabby and Lace. Was nice to see Charlotte back at a show she had a great weekend winning Senior with Chaos and getting 1st with Chaos In jumpers and 2nd with Gun good was to come back to competing. The show seemed to run well although it dragged a bit on Sunday when we all wanted to get home also a lot quieter this year as the folk festival wasn’t on looking for-ward to getting back to camping again maybe next year when Callum is a bit big-ger. I have noticed that Hayley Rohde has taken over running Kiss and what a great job she is making of it so good to see the young handlers running the seem to find it a lot easier than us adults. The highlight of the weekend was Jason & Jack getting their first challenge it was a year to the day that he first competed so was very special for us, lets hope there will be more to come.

DAWG Champ We made the long trip south to drop of gear and to do this show and what an en-joyable weekend we had in the Capital. Saturday was just beautiful and you couldn’t have asked for better weather and Sunday was typical windy Wellington. Jason and Nevenka had a great competition going on between them with Cassie getting the upper hand on Saturday but Jack getting the better of her on the Sun-day and picking up another CC. There were some great results from the weekend too; Kate Butler and Spring tak-ing out a Novice to put them into Intermediate, Karen and Tana were on form as were Nevenka and Cassie. Highlight for us though from the weekend was Skyla and Breeze again taking out the YKC run, Breeze loves running for Skyla and they have so much fun together, Jason better watch out or he will be losing his dogs. Great to see the clubs putting themselves out to run the YKC events as these kids are the future of our sport.

Taupo Champ Well another great show in Taupo with the numbers up on last year and people coming up from Wellington area to enjoy the sunshine and the swims in the lake at the end of the day. The water temperature in the lake was wonderful and I am sure all the dogs enjoyed it as much as ours did when they had their swim in the afternoon.

6

Trying to keep this report short so pick of the results were Chelsea with most of her dogs doing well again, Dawn Williams picking up a win in Starters, Kate Last with some good placings on her home ground, Shelley Clark and Tulli winning Novice, Susan McKay and Phantom winning Novice 2 to put them into Senior I think, well done Susan. Stacy Hobson winning Novice on the Sunday though I think it was his young lady running the dog, Dyson and Rumer winning Int 2 and other good placings too. Sue Andresen and Tip getting 4th in Senior 3, but the biggest smiles of the weekend would have to go to Heather Warren with Griff taking out Senior 3 with an outstanding run over what was a very difficult course. Well done Heather.

Cambridge Champ Well anyone would have thought we were at the NDTA or the Nationals at this show as the numbers were massive and Cambridge did a fantastic job in running 4 rings. Cambridge has to be one of the best shows of the year with just the best grounds around so no wonder they get the numbers to the show they do a big well done Cambridge and a small club to boot as well. Pick of the results for the weekend were Tarah Hunt running Mille winning Jumpers C and Novice 1, Catherine Martin and Volt winning Novice 2 and 3, Alice Cameron and Ace, Kristina Beresford and Jazzy, Deb Jackson and Cheeky, Jan Murden and JJ, Chelsea with all the dogs, Natasha Kenny and Sage, Dyson ad Rumer in the money again. High light though had to be Hayley Rohde coming 2nd in Senior 1 with Kiss truly outstanding. Have to mention that my Bailey boy picked up a Challenge in Senior 3 coming 3rd was so proud of my boy.

North Shore and Hibiscus Coast Champ We didn’t go to this show but thought I would write a bit about this show as Julie McConkey and Blake won Senior 3 on the Sunday to gain there last challenge to make them up to Agility Champions, Hibiscus Coast has become quite a lucky ground for Julie and Blake so well done Julie and watch out at the Mount/Tauranga show as Jason plans on getting you since he missed out. Other results from this weekend were Deb Jackson and Cheeky winning Sen 1 and good placing in Int 1, 2 and 3, Jan and JJ winning Int 2 and Debbie Mid-dlemiss in the money with Riddles even picking up a 2nd Place Challenge with him in Sen 3 – go Riddles.

Hawera Champ What and eventful weekend this was for all that attended and some very very happy people there were too on the drive home from Hawera this weekend. The biggest smiles of the weekend had to go to Tiffany Brown & Kylia and Lou Baker & Kosima who picked up 1st and 2nd in Senior 2, Kosima also got her JDX. You couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces and so cool it was to too see them pick their blueys.

7

Dyson and Rumer took out Int 1 and Sen 1 to pick up another Chal-lenge, want be long before we are soaking them at this rate. Fiona and Sharky picked up a trifecta by win-ning a Intermediate, Senior and Jumpers B, Sharky’s first of many CC I am sure. Joanne Small had and outstanding weekend with Breeze getting a place in nearly ever event she was in and winning a Novice to which must put her into senior now. Have a funny little story to finish on about a little incident that happened at Kerry Lane involving a poor little chicken. There we were back at Kerry Lane on Saturday night and Jason went to toilet the dogs and he met up with Shane McGhie who was looking a little worse for wear following his fall earlier in the day. He and Jason got talking and he said to Jason you would believe what has just a happened, I had just let the dogs out to have a run around and Josh disappeared around the corner so I called him back and around he trotted proud as punch with a HUGE chicken in his mouth, he had killed it and I thought oh no what do I do. Shane owned up and went and told the people with the lady owner being devastated at losing one of her prise Chickens. The McGhies want be able to book at Kerry Lane again, so watch out people there is a Chicken Killing Miniature Schnauzer in our midst now.

No Josh not the Chicken

Lower North Report - by Peter de Wit

So what does a person write in a column about agility competitions for the month of February when said person did not actually go to any events in that month.

At our club I take the newbies class, those people straight off the street that have seen some dog agility and think they might like to give it a go. Every term that means around 10-15 keen and nervous handlers and dogs turn up for an eight week course.

This term is fairly typical of most with a huge range of dogs in the class. There’s

8

Teddy the Toy poodle cross Jack Russell terrier that stands about 200mm, Jonny the Foxy, Kaahu & Millie the poodles, Chloe the Weaten x Tibetan, Kane the Sheltie, Monty the Boxer, Millie the something cross something else, Monty the Boxer, Baxter the Cavoodle, Diesel the Huntaway and Sam the BC. In our town this is pretty much what we get all the time. There are quite a few challenges to training all these breeds and it makes for an interesting class.

As the main aim of this class is to have some fun while the handlers and dogs learn a little about agility, we spend lots of time running doing tunnels, running in circles and zig zags and scrambling along planks, and running relays. There are only a few rules for the class and here they are:

All training is on lead unless your instructor gives you permission to be off lead, Keep a good 3-4m space between dogs most of the time, If dog to dog issues arise, everyone must WALK AWAY from each other until you are far enough away that your dog is calm. If a dog gets loose the instructor will say, “HOLD YOUR DOG”. Everyone must stop training and hold their dogs until the loose dog in under control. The class members are responsible for setting up the equipment and putting it away.

We do have a lot of fun and by week 5 most of the dogs are running off lead doing sequences of “jumps”, tunnels and ramps that make the class feel like they are do-ing agility.

In late January I went to Canterbury for five days, 3 days of agility training and 2 days of judging at the CATS Agility competition. I would like to thanks my hosts, Bernadette, Gay, Tina & Trisha for looking after me so well, you guy are amazing.

I must say that CATS had the best raffle I have ever seen at an Agility event, al-though there was not much in it for me. There was a table with hundreds of items of cosmetics on it. The raffle was multi-draw and I saw some people go up a huge number of times. I think I got the 5th last draw, all that was left was 4 x hair colour-ing and a scented candle. I took the candleJ.

I thoroughly enjoyed setting courses for the southern dogs and watching them race around. There were a couple of events where the winner ran last and crushed the hopes of those that ran earlier. After five days on my feet it was great to have a couple of days off after that.

While I was away, at the DAWG agility in Wellington Daryl Hogg and Eye-C won senior to gain their AGILITY CHAMPION title. Huge congratulations to Daryl on gaining this title and I’m sure that the Grand

9

will come along too. Being a typically hot Wellington day, the wetting was held in a kiddies paddling pool.

As some of you know we have dipped in to the pond of dog breeding with Quick. She has been mated to Mel & Jason’s Bailey and is due to have pups in April. This is the main reason for having some time off agility competitions. Even though we have just started it is very exciting and a new experience. I am busy ready Karen’s notes from a course she took a few years ago and gathering the things we will need next month.

Last weekend was Upper Hutt’s big agility competition of the year. This year we had a carnival atmosphere with all the marquees, tents and campervans around the ring. The event is held in a popular public park, right next door to a softball dia-mond (with games being played) and “Maidstone Max” a huge play ground and skateboard park. Many members of the general public come to see what is going on. They are no doubt entertained by the antics of the dogs (and their handlers!). It does mean we and our dogs have to be on our best behaviour.

Being at the end of the island we get smaller entries than just about any club in the north, but this has the advantage that we can run more events and we do! Three agility sets plus two jumpers plus AD plus YKC. We were well supported with competitors from all over the North Island including some from as far away as Auckland.

Every time we run one of these events I am reminded of the huge amount of work it has become to run a competition. It seems to take an amazing number of peo-ple, performing a wide range of tasks to get the event going, to keep it running smoothly and to bring it to a close at a reasonable hour on Sunday (3pm in this case). I take my hat off to everyone that run and help out at events all around the country. Well done to everyone that came to the competition and achieved their goals for the weekend.

Did you see all those little kids with their maroon tee shirts on? There they were working their little butts off, call stewarding, lead running and doing the white board. They even got to run their dogs in YKC. I must admit I am very proud of the kids at our club!

Canterbury Tails by Sue McKee & Teezsa, Rez and Switch

South Canterbury Dog Training Club - 13th/14th February I only attended day one of this event. Talk about four seasons in one day. Ar-rived at the grounds to howling gales and light rain. The rain cleared and for a couple of hours or so we were all sweltering and down to singlets and shorts. Then the front came through and we all put our layers back on and froze while the wind blew a gale again. Then just as everyone went home the wind died down. Apart from all that, some interesting courses set by our judges, Graeme Lawson and Steve Tansey. Steve Tansey’s all jump jumpers - no tunnels - in Jumpers B had many wondering if we were going to get lost. It certainly kept our brains working at the end of a long day to navigate our way around the course. I man-aged to get round it with the Red Dog and got my last clear round needed for JD. Well done to all the newbie handlers (and some not so newbie) in Starters where it was a 1st to 5th lineup of Waimakers, Megan Loughridge winning with her mum’s dog Charley - a nice birthday present for Megan who turned 14 that day, followed by Darron Willetts and Jess, Heather Drewett & Willow, Chrissy Knowles and Angel and Yolanda Nuberg & Rev. Although I wasn’t there, I hear Darron won Starters on Sunday. North Otago Dog Training Club 20/21 February North Otago put on a very ambitious event for us all, with triple agility and triple jumpers - this with a club which has around nine members! Well done to them for pushing the envelope and putting on a great show. And they even had influ-ence over the weather, as it was hot and dry - too hot of course for running agility. There were lots of people camping, which was great to see. Megan Loughridge with her mum’s dog Charley carried on their winning way, making sure they were well and truly out of Starters with another win to clinch the deal. And didn’t Charley have fun in the water trough, thought-fully provided by Allan Booth - no ordinary trough, this was big enough for a couple of humans to have a bath in if they felt so inclined. Not without its drama, with Helen Lappin tripping over her little spaniel George at the start line and then getting her foot hooked in the ring rope and falling and breaking her wrist. St John Ambulance were soon on the scene and she was carted

Charley having fun in the water trough at Oamaru.

12

off to hospital. Little Jake Remon did a great job of waiting for the ambulance to arrive and directing them to the proper area, and I believe also got a short ride in the ambulance into the bargain. Many thanks to all the people who rallied round and gave advice and medication to my sick wee man, the Rezmeister. Agility people are a great bunch of caring people. Maybe he’ll learn not to eat stuff he shouldn’t from now on, but some-how I doubt it. Michael Barrett won Jumpers B a couple of times and now has joined the ladies in Jumpers A, although we weren’t sure if he may have already been a lady when his name was accidentally read out at prizegiving as Michelle. Lovely courses the whole weekend by our judges Bernadette Thompson, Graeme Lawson, Joanne Rennell, Carole Logan and Irene Lock. So nice to see courses at the ap-propriate level, particularly in Starters and Novice where even the simplest courses can turn to custard for new dogs. Looking at the entries, next year this club if it had roughly the same numbers would have a split in Novice, Intermediate and Jumpers C, while Jumpers B, Starters and Senior would have to battle it out with all dogs competing against one another, although of course lots more dogs in midi jumping lower than they were this year. My three (including my heading dog) will still be jumping with the big guys so no change there, sadly. Interesting times ahead, with the South Island so different from the north. Waimakariri Dog Training Club Ribbon Trial Another stunning day, and a well-attended event with judges Judy Young and Nic Furby doing the honours. Lovely to have plenty of trees to park under for shade. Congratulations to young Emma Trimble for winning Elementary A with the Trimble’s rescue dog, Levi who is a super cool dude.

Down South report—by Elaine Pearce The first event for the month was the Otago CTC champ show and ADXA trial. Unfortunately this show turned out to be a real challenge. Firstly we found out that some entries had been stolen. Luckily a kind member of the public rang a club member to say she had found their cheque on the street in South Dunedin. A lot of stress, time and advertising later and, hopefully, we managed to contact everyone who had intended entering our show. The second disaster was when, due to personal circumstances one of our officiat-ing judges, Abi Lister could not come. We had already organised and paid for Abi's flight and she was flying out of Rotorua airport, not a terribly common de-parture point. Abi kindly arranged for Martin Bush to drive approx 100 km to Rotorua airport so he could use her ticket. Our Treasurer, Anne, then had to con-vince Air NZ to transfer the ticket which, after numerous time consuming phone calls, she did. To start with they had no intentions of being helpful and there were

13

all sorts of suggestions about how to convince the airport authorities that Martin was in fact Abi. At the time of our Feb show, Martin was not a senior judge so Steve Chester kindly agreed to judge all three Seniors. A bit of reorganisation to the judging allocation and we were set. Thank you to Martin, Steve and Abi for being so helpful. Then our Eukanuba sponsorship did not arrive purely due to the rep forgetting to send it. This is the first time it has ever happened and Eukanuba have been gener-ously sponsoring us for many years. With Waitangi Day on the Saturday there was no way to get the product to us in time. Rest assured that there will be full sponsorship at Otago's April show. Sponsorship is very hard to come by so we should be extremely grateful to Eukanuba. This is the first time they have ever let us down and it certainly was not inten-tional. Just human error. The final disaster to top everything off was when we found out that the Dunedin City Council had allowed the Mountain Bike Club closure of the Forrester Park access road on Sunday. The closure was supposed to be all day but with the co operation of both clubs it was agreed to allow our members vehicle access to the dog park until 10.00am. The road was then reopened at about 1.00. Hopefully this did not inconvenience too many competitors. Despite all this, we ran a great show, were generally lucky with the weather and most people seemed to have a good time. Thank you to all non Otago and Otago CTC members who pitched in to help. Timaru had a champ show on in the second weekend of Feb but sorry no report and cannot see any results. The third weekend was the North Otago Triple Championship Agility Event, Tri-ple Championship Jumpers and AD Trial. A huge ask for any club but particu-larly for North Otago which is probably the smallest club in the South Island. Obviously plenty of outsiders jumped in to help but with three rings mostly run-ning simultaneously it must have been pretty difficult. I only attended the Sunday and when I arrived there appeared to be plenty of sun-burnt people and some very tired looking dogs. On the Saturday some dogs could have had up to 6 runs and on Sunday those same dogs could have had another 4 runs. Goodness knows how the people with multiple dogs coped. I did not hear or see a lot of results except for Lisa Duff taking out the highly contested top dog award.
