There is signage up asking all visitors to report to the school office for contact tracing purposes. Please make sure that you are not cutting through school grounds or coming to play on our fields during the school day. We need to keep our students and staff safe. Distance Learning: We have issued/couriered around 170 devices. These orders were placed with the Ministry of Education immediately, but as a school we have no way to track or trace the delivery of these packs. Next Week and Beyond: Distance learning continues from home, as usual, for most students and staff. As a school, we will begin preparation for moving to Alert Level Two. This announcement will be made on Monday 11 th May. Many families may still choose to remain at home. Students who return to school will not be able to share devices. We will be asking all students who have their own devices at home to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to school upon return, if you can. All students who have devices issued will also bring these back. Uniform: As part of our school uniform update we have introduced a new school jacket (pictured right). The black school jacket, with hood, is available to purchase from The Warehouse, Papamoa at a cost of $96.00. These are proving to be very popular! We are also working with providers to introduce school trackpants, as a result of student voice feedback, but, it is taking time to source a quality product. Watch this space! WHOLE SCHOOL INQUIRY FOR TERM 2

The students at MMI have had the unique experience of being immersed in online learning for a number of weeks. During this time, there have been so many learning opportunities. Lockdown has meant that students have been spending more time with families and learning to explore different ways to be entertained in their own bubble. With all of the Covid-19 updates and information that is provided, there have been many rich learning contexts. As a school, we would like to take this opportunity to build students’ inquiry and learning skills in regards to this pandemic...we are making history. We would like students to be confident and clear in their thoughts and actions about this new virus and also develop an awareness of community at this time.

The Big Idea for Term 2 is:

People respond to a crisis in different ways We have identified some key understandings that our students can gain during this inquiry:

A virus is a transmittable disease. Effects of an unknown virus entering the world. Ways in which people respond to a medical crisis. How our actions affect others.

During this inquiry, students will integrate their learning across the different subject areas. They will be encouraged to make connections and identify ways that they can be responsible during this time. Please interact with your child as they are working through the inquiry process. Sharing your opinions and experience will help your child value different perspectives. If you have any comments or questions about your child’s learning, please contact their classroom teacher.

Whānau 11: Every day is awesome in Whānau 11! I have really enjoyed the creativity and engagement students have shown during this time on Seesaw and on Google Classroom (and how quickly they have mastered skills around these learning platforms!). The positivity and humour has certainly made the days easier and much more fun. A big shout out to our community for the support you have been giving your children and to our school - it really makes a difference!

Whānau 12: Whanau 12 have been working hard and having fun with online learning. The students have been engaging in their assigned online tasks, as well as the specialist tasks, with many customising their learning spaces into cozy forts! Miss Fahy has been feeling like a Youtuber, giving her class a video update every morning and the rest of the class is feeling really tech savvy mastering Google Classroom, EP and Seesaw. We always make sure we keep in touch with each other and have social time! As much as we love learning in our own spaces at our own paces, we can’t wait to get back to school!

Whānau 15 We have been working hard at our online learning. We meet each day at 10am on Google Meet. We have been doing our Reading, Writing and Maths each day. Sometimes we have had fun challenges - like making the best Russian Fudge. We wrote letters to people we were missing and posted the letters through the post. A few of us have been busy helping with building projects around the house. We have still had a weekly Kia Mia draw on Seesaw to celebrate all the hard work we have been doing.

UPDATES ON CAMP CREDITS AND EVENTS/COMPETITIONS/SPORTS CREDITS Camp Credits All refunds for Rooms 5 through to 26, that have been requested, have now been processed. Please advise if you would like a camp refund or would like to donate to the student welfare fund. Should we not hear from you, the credit will remain on your child’s account. PLEASE ENSURE YOU EMAIL: [email protected] if you require a refund.

Events/Competitions/Sports Credits E-Pro-, which has been postponed, will not be receiving a credit unless this is cancelled. Term 1 Sports- Some sports will be issued with partial credits if these have been offered to us by the local sporting association. We are currently requesting this information from each association and will advise you as soon as we have received a credit or advice that no credit will be issued by them. Any partial credits will be applied to your child’s account. Volleyball has been credited $14 per player and credited to your child’s account.

Winter Sports– We are also keeping in contact with these local sporting associations as to potential start dates and fee reductions and will advise when we have firmer dates and prices.

Super 11 Sports– Any Super 11 which has been cancelled will be credited to your child’s account. If a Super 11 Competition has been postponed, no credits will be issued until we have been advised that it is cancelled.

PLEASE NOTE : At this stage we are not ready to process any refunds for sports or events which have been cancelled, but we are working hard to get these to you as soon as possible and will advise you as soon as we are in the position to do so.

BAY VENUES PRICE INCREASES Tauranga City Council are proposing increasing costs of, on average, 25% on Bay Venues (including Baywave, Baypark and other sporting venues). These increases will affect most of our sporting codes, as well as AIMS. We are extremely concerned that these price hikes will put sports out of reach, financially, for some students. Below is a link for you to have your say. Please take the time to complete. https://www.tauranga.govt.nz/community/have-your-say/open-consultations-and-engagements/consultation-details/annual-plan-2020-21-submission-form Below is a template you may like to use :

To whom it may concern. I and/or my child(ren) plays .............................................(list all the sporting codes you or your child(ren) are involved with eg swimming, futsal, basketball, volleyball, water polo etc). I would like Tauranga City Council to consider NOT making changes to the user fee charges across all sport and recreation facilities in Tauranga. In this challenging time sport is important for our family because ........... (list reasons)................and the cost for my children to participate is always very challenging. It is very likely that increases to user fees would flow onto individuals like myself and therefore make sports less accessible.

CHESS INFORMATION The Junior Online Oceanic Chess League (JOOC League) begins at 6pm, this Saturday. Currently, there are just over 230 students from around NZ and Australia registered, including 6 from Tauranga. However, I am sure that there are many more chess playing students from Tauranga, that might be interested in this tournament. This is a team tournament, in which players represent their city. Students play one game per week for seven weeks. For tournament details –https://www.chess.com.au/ To register -https://tornelo.com/chess/orgs/ku/events/junior-online-oceania-chess-league I would like to extend an invitation for you to join students from Pillans Point School, Tauranga Primary School, Otumoetai Intermediate and Tauranga Boys High as we take on other students from around Oceania, this Saturday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BoP Invitational Arena Tournament Wednesday 29th - 6pm To join, go to lichess.com and create a login, (you can use an alias if you wish to keep yourself anonymous). This is an excellent site for learning chess as it has video lessons, puzzles and plenty of game action to play. On Wednesday 29th, just before 6pm, login in to the tournament using this link: https://lichess.org/tournament/xMeUMZE1 The password is BoPinvite. The arena is open for 90 minutes and the winner is the player with the most points at the end. Arena chess does not have rounds as normal tournaments do. As soon as you finish your game, the program pairs you with another waiting player, near your rating, so there is minimal waiting time between games. Also it uses a different scoring system, where you get double points for having winning streaks. Arena chess can be fast and furious, or it can be slow and careful. The choice is up to you. Hope to see you there Kind regards Richard Totton Chesspower tournament adjudicator
