FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Kia ora koutou This weekend sees the start of the Anchor AIMS Games, with Cross Country being run on Sunday, the Gymnastics competition beginning and the Open Ceremony. I would like to say a huge “Thank You” to all staff, parents and other personnel involved in the preparation of our students, for this event. I know that everyone representing Mount Maunganui Intermediate will demonstrate our Coastal Values of Learner, Pride and Respect, regardless of outcomes. Coaches/managers will have communicated with their teams, with information about expectations for the week. Please ensure that your child is where they need to be, when they need to be there, so pre match preparation can run smoothly. Best of luck to all involved, but most of all, have a great time and give 100% performance. For students at school this week, there will be some changes to the normal programme for you. I know that some teachers are hoping to take their classes to watch some of the nearby competitions - information will be shared next week about this, if it has not already been done. The behaviour of some of our students has been a bit bumpy this week. Please have a conversation with your child about the importance of speaking positively to others and not passing on information that is hearsay. The use of unkind words has caused quite a number of negative situations this week and has taken considerable time to manage. On the positive side, the majority of our students are behaving beautifully, consistently demonstrating our Coastal Values, on a day to day basis. These students are Superstars. Kia kaha to everyone for the upcoming week. Beryl Harvey Acting Principal

ROOM 15 LEARNING PAGE

Our theme for this term is “How does the world we live in communicate change?” Our focus for this term is communicating this message through a piece of art. Room 15 are creating self-portraits, in an unusual way. These portraits are created using wooden blocks, paint and mussel shells. The art begins with a plan in our book, which we drew, based of photos we took at the start of the year. Then, we transferred these designs onto the already painted shells using pencil. We then painted the wooden blocks a background colour with a shirt and neck. After that we painted the shells a skin colour, then facial features. We then added hair using tassels and other materials. We glued the shell so it fitted the neck. Here are some examples and development of the portraits at different stages.

MT INTERMEDIATE A Mt Intermediate A Hockey team had an awesome game on Friday night, beating Bethlehem College Boys A, 3-0. This put the Mt team in 3rd position overall in the Intermediate Schools Division 1, a great result. Thank you to Jitu, who has done a fabulous job as coach! Good news kept coming with the Mt B team winning Division 2. We are looking forward to AIMS.

MT INTERMEDIATE WHITE

MMI White Hockey Team finished runner up in the Division 2 Plate Final. The game was a 1 - 1 all draw at the final whistle, then decided on a penalty shoot-out. It was a tough final and the team gutsed it out, with one player out injured and 3 with the flu but still turning up to play for their team. The team is a tight unit and they have played most of the season with one or no subs, and sometimes with only 10 players. They have stuck together and shown real character. We are incredibly proud of them.
