School Newsletter No. 3
19 February 2016
FROM OUR PRINCIPAL - LISA MORRESEY Kia ora koutou Its been a busy, wet week. I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the learning conferences next week. Next Tuesday, we hold our first set of learning conferences for the year. This is the first opportunity that you will get to meet your child's teacher and to talk with your child about their start to 2016, their learning, their goals and their aspirations. It is the beginning of the learning partnership and an opportunity to set the year off to the best possible start. At this conference your child, will lead a conversation, or will be supported to lead a conversation, about their learning and goals. You will also have an opportunity to talk with the teacher and to raise positives, any concerns or to ask any questions about intermediate life.

MORE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL - LISA MORRESEY The specialist subject teachers in Food Technology, Visual Art, Hard Materials/Electronics, Digital Technology, Music and Dance and Drama will also be available to meet with you and your child. Make sure you are aware of the subject that your child is currently working in. These classes are practical subjects where students explore learning through the Arts and Technology curriculum. These subjects are also important for transition to secondary school, as students learn to work with a range teachers and to move from class to class. The Senior Leadership Team, Sports Co-ordinator, SENCO, International Students Director and Maths Specialist Teacher will all be available, as well to, discuss your child, or answer any questions or concerns that you may have. These conferences are compulsory. If you are unable to attend on the day, your child's class teacher will make an alternative time to talk with you. Students will be required to attend their learning conference in school uniform and will be marked present that day upon attendance at the conference.
“Ours is a time of new beginnings. We have the opportunity to renew and change, to invent and create.
More than any of us can do alone this is something that we must plan together.”
Lawson, Hal (1995) Quest See you all on Tuesday. Let the learning conversations begin. Ms Morresey/Whaea Lisa

PARENT SUPPORT GROUP We are very excited to be starting a new year, with new parents and new ideas for our fundraising for the kids and school.
We have had a great start, and must give a HUGE shout out to our Year 8 students (and parents!!) from last year who donated their school uniforms. Our second hand uniform sale has given us over $5,000 to start the year. Thank you all so much for this huge contribution to our school.
We are running a cake stall on Wednesday 24th February. We ask for parents (and kids) to do baking and bring it in to school when you come to your learning conferences on Tuesday 23rd. All food can be left in the Hall Foyer, where tables will be set up.
Muffins / Cupcakes / Biscuits are extremely popular, with the students, as they can be purchased individually. We still like getting cakes though – some smart kids even pool their cash to buy one of these!!
We need a few people to assist with set up and selling on the day. Shifts are 7.45 – 9.15am, 10.15 – 11am and 12.15-1.30pm. If you are able to help, can you please contact Anna Beck – [email protected] or 027 448 6258.
Remember, if you are free on Monday 22nd February, at 7pm, come along to the school staff room for our first meeting.

OUT OF HOURS MUSIC CLASSES Last Friday we had a lot of students take home a blue notice, as they indicated that they were keen on learning a musical instrument such as Guitar, Drums, Bass Guitar, Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone.
If your child is still keen and wanting to take lessons this year, then please return the completed cut off slip to the school office by next Wednesday, 24th February. After that date it will be too late to become involved, as lessons begin week 5 of term 1. (Week beginning 29th February.)
If you have any questions or concerns please email [email protected]. Thank-you. Mrs Christine Pearce, Music teacher

GOLF ROAD PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
This week almost 30 students were given traffic warden training by Constable Dennis Bidois. These
students will be assisting with safely crossing our students across the new pedestrian on Golf Road. The
students have volunteered for this responsibility and are looking forward to the role.
The crossing will be patrolled in the mornings, from 8.25-8.45 and in the afternoons, from 2.45-3.05.
The traffic wardens will be wearing high visibility vests and will be accompanied by an adult.
If there are any parents or whanau who are able to assist with supervising traffic wardens, either in the
morning or afternoon, this would be greatly appreciated, as there are times that staff have difficulty
being available. Please contact Sue Coyle by phoning the office or email [email protected] if you
are able to help with this.
We also ask that you remind your child to cross at the pedestrian crossing, when crossing Golf Road
and to follow the instructions from the traffic wardens. This will ensure the safety of all our students.
The traffic wardens will begin on Monday, 22nd February and we know will do an outstanding job to
keep our students safe.
