Church music, of course, takes many forms and has many styles, from classical to contemporary. But, as Martin Luther strongly believed, all religious music in- spires the soul to faith as it touches a deep place inside of us. For music moves us in a way that few other things can. May music continue to inspire all of us to a rich faith in our God, as our emo- tions, our bodies and our spirits are united through music into a God-given, lively and creative energizing of our spirits!

What is it about Lutherans and Music?

From the Pastors

A rich appreciation of music is built into the very DNA of Lutheranism (and therefore Protestantism). It all started be-cause Martin Luther was himself very musical. Luther personally composed 36 hymns, many of which appear in our hymnal (such as “A Mighty Fortress is our God”), and also composed about 30 chorales. To create his hymns, he often took melodies of folk music and popular tavern songs, transcribed and harmonized them, and then added Chris-tian lyrics. Luther believed strongly in congregational singing during worship in the liturgy, and he also helped create a hymnal.

So deep was Luther’s im-mersion in music that he developed a whole theology around it. He believed music was so central to spirituality that he often called music the “third sacrament”, after Baptism and Communion.

Because of Luther’s emphasis upon it, music quickly became engrained into Lu-theran worship. Most Lutheran churches had pipe organs, and church musicians composed music for services. One of these church musicians was Johann Se-bastian Bach of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany. Bach composed such intricate, innovative and elegant baroque music to be performed as preludes, post-ludes and special music during worship. Many still regard Bach as the greatest composer who ever lived.

At Muddy Creek, we are blessed to be able to celebrate the recent completion of our pipe organ renovation project. Through many generous donations to the

Organ Fund over the years, we were able to embark in January of this year upon a full renovation of our pipe organ. This renovation includes, among other things, a new console, new wiring, incorporation of pipes and an ivory keyboard from the pipe organ at the former Salem Lutheran Church in Reamstown, restoration of many pipes from the original Gottfried

organ which had been in storage, and extensive inter-nal renovations to correct years of patch-work fixes that meant that the organ no longer had a unified, clear sound. It now does! The sound is now much fuller, muscular, richer, and clear-er, and the organ is itself

much more versatile.

The newly renovated organ became playable for the first time on September 16 of this year, and it will be dedicated at a special recital and dedication on Sun-day, November 11th at 3:00 p.m. We are pleased to announce that Margaret Marsch, a superb organist from our area, will perform on our organ at the dedica-tion.

Church music, of course, takes many forms and has many styles, from classical to contemporary. But, as Martin Luther strongly believed, all religious music in-spires the soul to faith as it touches a deep place inside of us. For music moves us in a way that few other things can.

May music continue to inspire all of us to a rich faith in our God, as our emo-tions, our bodies and our spirits are united through music into a God-given, lively and creative energizing of our spirits!

Help Needed Tie Prayers on to

Prayer Squares for Stockings for Sol-

diers

If you are able to help cut out and tie prayers on to prayer squares, please contact Judy Dengler (Muddy Creek member) at [email protected], 717-484-2082. So far, our Prayer Shawl Knitting Group has made 3,000 Prayer Squares to send to the Stockings for Soldiers project through the Keystone Military Families organization. If you can help, Judy will give you the materials, and you can tie them on at your leisure. The project will be completed at the end of October. Other churches have also become inspired by the project and are joining our effort. The squares will be dedicated in church on Oct. 28.

Pipe Organ Dedica-tion and Concert

Sun. November 11, 3:00 p.m.

We are delighted to announce the dedication of Mud-dy Creek’s newly renovated pipe organ! On Sunday, November 11 at 3 p.m. at the church, acclaimed local organist Margaret Marsch will perform a concert as we dedicate the organ. Marsch is the Sanctuary Or-ganist at Lancaster Church of the Brethren and is a member of the local American Guild of Organists. The nine month-long complete renovation of the pipe organ cost $153,000 and incorporates pipes from the former Salem Lutheran Church in Reamstown, rein-states stored pipes from the original Gottfried organ, and also features a new console. Come out and cele-brate!

Fifty bags of school sup-plies were filled! The group also enjoyed pizza afterward. Thank you to Thrivent for underwriting some of the cost of this service project! Thank you as well to everyone from the congregation who so generously do-nated school supplies! We appreciate your wonderful support!
