TORONTO COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS (Earth Day Leadership Projects) The City of Toronto's 4th Annual 20-Minute Toronto Makeover will take place on Friday, April 20, 2006. Last year the TCDSB displayed a phenomenal participation rate and demonstrated our Board's commitment to our community and the environment. In response to Mayor David Miller’s formal invitation, the TCDSB encourages all schools and administrative sites to participate in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover. The 20-Minute Toronto Makeover is a city-wide initiative, and part of Mayor Miller’s Clean City, Beautiful City Campaign. Students and teachers are asked to take 20 minutes out of their day and clean up litter in any public space - parks, school grounds, street corners, etc. If your school will be participating in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover, and you would like to receive supplies (gloves and bags), please register online using this link http://intranet/vgk/recyclingSurvey.asp Please consider the following when planning your 20-Minute Toronto Makeover event: A 20-Minute Makeover at its simplest level is a school community (or representation of a school community) setting aside 20 minutes to clean-up the school (inside and/or outside).

If you would like to clean up a local park between April 10th to 20th, please complete the attached Request Form from the City and return it back to Yukiko Pinto of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation via e-mail [email protected] or Fax -416-392-8221. Yukiko will put you in touch with your local Park Supervisor to make arrangements. Please indicate the exact name of the park you wish to clean, the number of students and teachers attending, and your preferred clean-up date and time. Individual classes will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. The number of classes accommodated will be up to the discretion of each Park Supervisor. Note that the deadline for registration is March 9, 2007.

For park clean-ups, Parks and/or Recreation staff will be on-site to provide a pre-clean-up presentation and review safety rules. They will also remove bags of litter and recycling cleaned from parks and will keep sharps containers on hand.

The City of Toronto will provide large coloured garbage bags and gloves for all participants. Again, the school must register as above to be eligible for supplies.

Participants should bring plastic grocery bags from home for litter collection - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Schools should bring 1-2 recycling containers with them to their clean-up area to collect any recyclable litter -

reduce, reuse, recycle! For park clean-ups, Park Supervisors will supply recycling baskets on-site. Schools must bring a first aid kit with them to their clean-up area, and students should be accompanied by a

staff person trained in First Aid treatment. Students participating in the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover must fill out a Media Release form, as the event

could be covered by local media. Prayer services to be used during Earth Week. In addition, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation is having a draw to plant a tree. There are 4 large caliper trees available. Schools interested in a tree planting must register for the clean-up by March 9th. Up to four schools will be chosen, one per City district, in a random draw for the tree planting. Note that only those schools that are cleaning a local park are eligible to participate in the tree planting. Participation in events such as these allows students to live the Catholic Graduate Expectation: A Responsible Citizen, as they do their part to help create a clean and beautiful Toronto. This leadership project might be championed by a student leadership team,(i.e. ESP, Smile) an environmental club, the chaplaincy team, a science or social science class or staff and students who are passionate about environmental issues. We would ask that all schools include their caretakers as major partners in this initiative.

For information, please contact Ron Hearn at 416-222-8282, ext. 2177.

TCDSB GOES GREEN!

Earth Day = April 22, 2007! – Spring Cleanup!

Time to start thinking of all the environmental things that you have been doing throughout the year, and reflect and those accomplishments. Use Earth Day, April 22 or the week leading up to it, to promote your

environmental projects/programs/initiatives. Don’t forget to look out for the City of Toronto 20-minute make-over enrol, which TCDSB schools have

a history of participation! Hopefully we can make this year another great year for cleaning up the city, and bring awareness to the amount of waste that we produce, and recklessly throw away.

Take a clear bag along for recyclables! The forms should be available in the next couple of weeks.

“We Do Not Inherit The Earth From Our Ancestors, We Borrow It From

Our Children”

Minimize Waste! TCDSB current recycles computers, but is investigating expanding the program

to all IT equipment. Make sure your Computer Equipment gets recycled!

Conserve Energy! Make sure your computer, monitor

and all peripherals (printers, scanners, etc) are turned off at the

end of the day or for long durations.

SUBJECT: 14-2a Holy Name principal among nation's best JOANNA LAVOIE, Beach, Riverdale – The Mirror 02/15/07 The resounding message Jo Nazar, principal at Holy Name Catholic School in Riverdale, sends out is that her success as the school's leader is only possible because of the supportive community she serves. "This award is a celebration of my school team's success and hard work. I can do nothing alone," said Nazar, one of only two Canada's Outstanding Principal award recipients from Toronto. "I'm so excited for us as a community because it recognizes all of us. For me, leadership is inviting people to participate and rejoice." Nazar, an educator since 1982 and principal at Holy Name Catholic School for six years now, said getting into the education field was the right progression for her because she enjoys working with children. "It's just one of those professions where you're just out there. My life is enriched by the people I meet," said Nazar, a life-long east ender, who grew up in the Queen Street and Coxwell Avenue area. "School was the natural place for me." Starting off her career as a classroom teacher, Nazar also did a lot of work with special needs children and those with learning disabilities before moving to the administrative side of things as a principal. And as a leader, Nazar said the key to success is listening to staff members and addressing the individual and collective needs of her school community. "It's collaborative. We identify needs and then it's a go. I listen to my staff, my students and the community," said Nazar, who said she loves her job because every day there's a new experience to be had. "I want to let the kids be kids and work with them." At Holy Name, Nazar said one of the main focus areas is ensuring the students' reading levels are top notch by taking the time to help those who may need it. "We even brought in experts to train four teachers in a very specific reading program," said Nazar, who views reading as a foundation for all-around success in life. "We also have a big timetable co-ordinated so that children can receive intensive training with a reading instructor." Writing has also been identified as a focal point at the school. Nazar said the school, although on a tight budget like all schools, makes use of available resources. "People love to share their expertise. It's out there. You just have to ask," said Nazar, noting student from all grades can receive help with writing. At Holy Name, all teachers have received special straining in writing so they can all work on the same page. "Once kids have the tools, it's not hard. There's no greater delight than someone who has mastered a skill," she added. Celebrating the arts is another important part of life at Holy Name Catholic School. Typically the first areas to receive funding cutbacks, Nazar said her school tries to always foster the arts by offering diverse in-classroom training and various school clubs like opera, knitting, dancing and even steel pan drumming.

She also encourages her staff to teach their students about creative areas they may enjoy such as watercolour painting. "It's about engaging the whole person," she said, noting a number of guests come in to the school to hold workshops throughout the year. "The arts allow us to hope, to dream, to be quiet with ourselves and to just go beyond." Tricia Thomas, a Grade 8 teacher at the school, collaborated with colleague Maria Wilson, on the multi-page nomination. "From Day 1, I have felt at ease and comfortable. (Nazar) makes the learning environment a community," said Thomas, a teacher at the school for three years now. "Jo really takes the holistic approach to learning so that all children can achieve. She really someone who thinks outside the box." In her nomination letter, Wilson - who is currently on maternity leave - said she feels it's important to recognize those who exceed what is expected of them. "We don't often hear about the meaningful contributions that people make in education every day and particularly, in this case, the extraordinary efforts being made," she wrote. As part of her new "outstanding principal" status, Nazar will participate in a five-day executive leadership training program at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management at the end of February. On Feb. 27, the outstanding principals will be honoured at a gala dinner

SUBJECT: 14-3 Girls, dad give from their hearts, heads Valentine's gift to make children's wigs

TAMARA SHEPHARD Etobicoke Guardian Feb. 16, 2007

Maggie Dwyer shakes her head "no" when asked if she's going to miss her long, golden tresses. "I wanted to do it for my Aunt May," the eight-year-old Grade 3 student at Christ the King Catholic School said Valentine's Day as she readied for the big chop at Rendezvous Hair Salon on 37th Street. "I saw it in a newspaper."

Maggie and her friend Amy Brown, 10, and Maggie's dad, Craig donated their locks so they could be made into wigs for children who've lost their hair to alopecia, burns or as a result of chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer. "She told me, 'I want to grow my hair. If Aunt May can't use it, I'll give it to kids,'" Maggie's mom, Mary, recalls her young daughter telling her. She waited two years to donate, enough time to allow her dad to grow his hair. Maggie's Aunt May lost all her hair two years ago after chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer. Today, she is in remission.

"I've seen children at Sick Kids Hospital who have no hair," said Brown, a Grade 5 student at Christ the King whose twin sister, Colleen, goes to the Hospital for Sick Children for treatment. "My hair will grow back."

Hair stylist Romaine Persaud donated her services to the cause for free: "If they can do this, this is the least I can do." Yesterday, the black, brunette and blond hair - all the required 10 inches or longer - and monies raised was being donated to Angel Hair for Kids, a project of Mississauga-based A Child's Voice Foundation. Angel Hair provides human or synthetic hair wigs to children who've lost their hair to medical causes. This year, the agency says, 10,000 Canadian children will lose their hair to the A, B, Cs (alopecia, burns, cancer treatments).

Valentine's night after the hair trimming, Maggie's mom Mary found $190 in a baggie in her daughter's knapsack. "Oh, I was so excited (by the haircut), I forgot to tell you I got that money from the teachers," Maggie told her mom, saying she visited teachers on her lunch in the staff room to ask if they'd like to support her pledge. The Dwyer and Brown families have also raised about $900 in pledges from family and friends, enough to cover the cost to manufacture one children's wig.

A Child's Voice states on its website it takes about a dozen donations of unprocessed hair and $800 to $1,500 (depending on length, manufacturing requirements) to craft a single hand-sewn wig for a child. At any given time, the foundation reports it has five to 10 applications waiting to be processed, requests primarily from the Hospital for Sick Children, the Canadian Cancer Society, as well as from social workers in the community.

Scarborough Mirror – February 21, 2007 Youth must take on climate change challenge, students told Lt.-Gov Bartleman meets with students at Toronto Zoo MIKE ADLER Any hope to stop disastrous climate change rests with Canada's youth, its future leadership, Ontario Lt.-Gov. James Bartleman told students at the Toronto Zoo last week. Speaking to sixth graders from Toronto separate schools, he called for action on global warming and an extension of friendship to children of northern native communities, who "have been left behind" by the rest of the country. Bartleman had returned the day before from James Bay, where global warming's effects can already be seen, he said, in the thinning sea ice, shorter winters and a whole ecosystem being disturbed. "The arctic mammals are suffering," he told the students. "That permafrost line is moving further and further north." No part of the world is immune from damage through rapid climate change but Canada's arctic is a "hotspot" scientists say will be affected more than most, Bartleman noted. "I don't think there is a more important issue facing the people of the planet," he added, suggesting children have changed parents' attitudes on the environment before and can do the same with climate change. "You will be the educators." Bartleman, who told the students his mother was Chippewa and that he's proud of his native roots, said on his visits to northern native communities he's seen 15 to 20 people living in two-bedroom homes and schools falling down or mouldy. "And the children are in despair," leading to suicide attempts, he said. "They are out of sight, out of mind and people think of them in stereotypes." Many separate schools in Toronto are twinned with schools in Canada's arctic and Bartleman urged more students to link themselves to children in the far north so their communities can learn from each other. Students from Scarborough's Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School, twinned with the James Bay community of Attawapiskat, said they were worried about the future of a world affected by climate change. The zoo, where Bartleman visited the polar bear exhibit after the morning workshop Friday, helped convince the United Nations University to declare Toronto a regional centre of expertise in teaching sustainability and is proposing a Centre for Sustainable Life and Learning. It's also designing a tundra exhibit, opening in 2008 that will illustrate effects of climate change on Canada's north and give polar bears six times the space they have now, said Dr. William Rapley, the zoo's executive director of conservation, education and research.

On Feb 15, the Mary Ward Green Quest Club participated in the “Stewards of the Earth” presentation at the Metro Toronto Zoo. This TCDSB initiative was aimed at promoting Global Warming and Literacy Awareness in solidarity with Nunavut schools. A highlight was meeting the Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who is a key supporter of these initiatives. The Green Quest’s role was to share their personal environmental concerns with elementary students and dignitaries. They also led a 20 minute outdoor nature walk which concluded with a sushi feeding of the zoo’s last surviving polar bear.

SUBJECT: 14-5 Etobicoke robot looks to invade Mississauga in March JUSTIN HOLMES, Etobicoke Guardian 02/20/07 If Michael Power/St. Joseph's has their way, their robot will soon conquer Atlanta. For now, the school's robotics team has their sights set on their first ever competition in Mississauga. The team spent the last month and a half building and fine-tuning their robot, and shipped it out for the competition yesterday morning.

"It's very stressful and it's incredibly time consuming and you need a lot of support from home with something like this," said Gianluca Comisso, the team chair and a teacher at Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School. But, he adds, "it's a fantastic extracurricular activity. There's nothing as rewarding as seeing these kids brainstorming and coming up with ideas. The ideas are all from them." The team celebrated the project's completion on Monday and now look forward to the regional FIRST robotics competition.

The team will head to the Hershey Centre in March, where their robot will compete in a game in which it places inflatable rubber rings on a rack against robots from other Toronto-area schools. The Michael Power team - the only team from the Catholic school board - outfitted their tower-like robot with a forklift with suction cups to move the rings. The event promotes co-operation as well as competition and the schools who make up the top alliance will advance to the FIRST championship in Atlanta mid-April.

"We're a rookie team, so were keeping our fingers crossed," said Vicky Brady, a computer engineering teacher at the school and team co-chair. Comisso agreed that the competition is daunting. "There are teams that are coupled with GM, with real engineers. Then there are teams like Michael Power where it's like, here's a hacksaw."

One of the biggest hurdles for the team was simple lack of equipment. Michael Power isn't a school with extensive shop facilities and the team raised $12,000 in donations of cash and equipment to finish their robot. Comisso got the idea to start a competitive robotics team from a fellow teacher at another school and is amazed with how the students on the team have grown during the project. "For me, I've got to tell you, in my 10 years of teaching, it's been the most rewarding experience I've ever had. They're dedicated. They're here until 7 or 8 every night."

Brady said she was impressed with how the project "brings together students from different areas." Some come for the intellectual challenge, while others enjoy working with their hands or are more excited by the thrill of the competition, she said.

"You should see the energy here," she beamed. "It's been a great experience for all, students and teachers."

L to R John Shanahan (Principal of Neil McNeil HS), Leanne Kloppenborg (community rep Neil McNeil HS), Dr. Adam Cox, Catherine LeBlanc-Miller (Trustee Ward 9 and parent of Neil McNeil HS), Sylvia Menezes (CSAC Chair Neil McNeil HS) and Nicola D'Avella (Principal of Brebeuf College School)

Neil McNeil High School “Speaker Series 2007” - Dr. Adam Cox inter-active presentation hosted by Neil McNeil High School community, in collaboration with other TCDSB all-boys secondary schools. The Neil McNeil community successfully kicked off its “Speaker Series 2007” on Tuesday, January 9th. The Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) in collaboration with the Principal and staff of the school were able to engage Dr. Adam Cox, a well-known speaker and licensed clinical psychologist from Philadelphia to do two exceptional interactive presentations for educators and parents. Dr. Cox’s reputation as an advocate for the emotional wellbeing of youth and his interest in issues related to teenage boys prompted the all-boys school to invite him to share his expertise with the staff and parents. The Neil McNeil “Speaker Series 2007” is an initiative of the CSAC to get parents involved in their son’s education and to take a more participatory approach. This initiative was conceived when the Ontario Ministry of Education announced in November 2006 that it would be providing incentives and grants to individual school councils who promoted parent involvement in their children’s education and in their school community. The afternoon event, where almost 200 educators gathered, was “"Why Words Matter: Communication in the Social and Academic Lives of Boys" focusing on faculty, guidance counselors, learning specialists and other administrators. This program clarified why communication is fundamental to boys' social and emotional development. New research sheds light on what many professionals have noted intuitively for years: boys learn, communicate, and relate in particular ways. Working effectively with boys requires an understanding of the brain factors that drive boys' development and behaviour. This workshop answered some important questions such as, "What is the common denominator between learning challenges and social skills deficits? When ISN’T it ADHD?" Educators left the workshop with practical teaching strategies that they could implement immediately in their classrooms. The evening event was for parents, with a turnout of more than 200 parents from over 35 schools in the GTA from both the TCDSB and TDSB. The program "Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect", drew from Dr. Cox’s well known book, “Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect”. He elaborated on the challenges many boys face in learning and how to help them become effective communicators. He also discussed the role of parents in nurturing interpersonal awareness and social communication skills which are necessary to raise boys in this fast paced, wired world. The program had in-depth discussion of specific strategies for many different types of boys including those who may be anxious, shy, angry, or struggling with learning or attention challenges. The question and answer session proved very thought-provoking and informative. Dr. Cox is coming out with his next book, “Eight Pillars of the Executive Brain” in September 2007 and hopefully next year the Neil McNeil High School will have the honor of having Dr. Cox present another stimulating and informative workshop. Dr. Adam J. Cox, Ph.D., ABPP is a licensed and board certified clinical psychologist. He earned his doctoral degree in psychology at Lehigh University, and completed his clinical training at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Cox became a psychologist from a non-traditional path. While working as a fine artist near New York City, he opened a studio and welcomed children who wanted to learn how to draw and paint. This experience introduced him to the joy and creativity of mentoring children, which developed into the focus of his career as a family psychologist. As an advocate for children's mental health, Dr. Cox is a frequent lecturer at national and international conferences. He has been quoted in a variety of print media about a range of psychological issues affecting families and youth. These publications include the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Time Magazine, Family Circle, and many others. Recently, he has been featured on WGPA (Parenting Matters), NBC 10! and National Public Radio's Voices in the Family. www.dradamcox.com

community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.
