Kevin & Sami Siems have written to an inmate about to be released from
the Kansas City Reentry Center. They will get to know him and his needs in
order to help him transition back to the "real world" successfully. If they
discover some needs that we might be able help with, they will share
those opportunities with us. Thank you, Kevin and Sami for helping share
the love of God in this way.

1 Samuel 7:15-8:5 Samuel continued as Israel’s leader all the
days of his life. From year to year he went on
a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah,
judging Israel in all those places. But he
always went back to Ramah, where his
home was, and there he also held court for
Israel. And he built an altar there to the Lord.
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his
sons as Israel’s leaders. The name of his
firstborn was Joel and the name of his
second was Abijah, and they served at
Beersheba. But his sons did not follow his
ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain
and accepted bribes and perverted justice.
So all the elders of Israel gathered together
and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to
him, “You are old, and your sons do not
follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead
us, such as all the other nations have.”

After Moses died and the people of Israel moved into the Promised Land
they had a series of tribal leaders, usually referred to as “judges”. The Judge
would travel from sacred place to sacred place settling cases and
mediating disputes. It was the judge who called the people together in
times of crisis, such as in times of war to raise an army to repel an invader.
The various judges functioned as head chiefs among the tribes of Israel. Most
of the judges were men, but at least one was a woman.
Trust and honesty were the foundation of the judges providing real or
perceived justice among the people. When it became clear that there was
corruption at the highest levels, (i.e. Samuel’s sons) the tribal elders and
people of Israel decided they wanted a major change. They wanted a king
like the surrounding nations. They believed having a king would give them
justice, stability, security and a better life. Due to corruption and dishonesty,
the whole structure and character of Israel changed.

The Bel-Ray Hospitality and Warming Station is a joint effort by community
members, nonprofit organizations and churches who have come together
to ensure that unsheltered families/individuals have a place to go for a bit
of heat and shelter during extreme cold weather.
The goal is to have a safe location where folks from Belton and Raymore
can get warm when temperatures drop to 25 degrees or below between
November 1st and March 31st. The initial plan was to have a place where
people could sleep overnight. However, the issue of liability reared it’s
ugly head so plans were scaled back to providing a warm place from 6PM
to 8PM on any day when the temperature was lower than 25 degrees.
After a second meeting on 1/18 where the whole idea seemed to be
“stalling out”, it was decided not to wait for an enclosed, warm location
to become available. The Steering Committee will pitch a tent from 5PM
to 7PM on Tuesday, Jan. 23rd to do a trial run.
What can CrossRoads do to help those folks who live without shelter while
the logistics of a Warming Station are being sorted out? We can collect
the articles that will be most helpful to the individuals and families who find
themselves in this situation. Sunday there will be a box under the
Hospitality Table at CrossRoads. If you have items to donate, please bring
them and put them in the box. Lyn will take things to Family Resource Cen-
ter of Cass County for distribution as needed. If you would rather donate
cash or a check, please put cash in an envelope labeled “Warming
Station” and put that same name on the memo line of your check.
Properly labeled donations can just be added to the offering plate on
Sunday. That way there will be no confusion regarding where the money
should go.
Items needed include gloves, socks, hats, handwarmers, blankets, and
non-breakable thermos-type bottles. Prepackaged food items like peanut
butter crackers, nutrition bars, and protein shakes would be very popular,
too.
Thank you, CrossRoads, for your generosity as we remember Jesus’
teaching that whatever we do for one of our brothers or sisters, we do for
Him. And conversely, whatever we fail to do for our fellow man, we fail to
do for Him.
Susie McClain received a nice thank you note the crew of Operation Santa
to thank us for our Angel Tree Christmas ministry gifts:
To Susie and Members of Crossroads UMC:
We want to thank you so much for making Christmas extra special for the
families you adopted. We couldn’t do what we do without your support.
Wishing all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful 2018.
