STULZ – THE NATURAL CHOICE
Traditional cooling – critical issues
• Downflow: Height required for raised floor Lay-out of distribution grilles Air flow losses through the openings of raised floor More energy for ESP required for air flow through raised
floor Power absorbed by fans
• Upflow: Mix between cold and warm air If supply is ducted, more power absorbed by fans Distance between air conditioners and equipment to be
cooled

• Cold air is supplied at
floor level and low
velocity (1 m/s or
less)
• Stratification of
temperature:
negligible mix of cold
and hot air
• No need of raised
floor systems
• Main benefit: air
distribution and lower
operation costs

PSCR Phase sequencing control for 3-phase scroll compressors
Not on WDE40 as the 3-phase version is provided with reciprocating compressor. It stops
compressor when rotation is no correct (no signal to C2020)
SWM / SWT Main switch Protection of e-box: to remove the cover of e-box, main swich must be opened
VCC Voltage control card It interrupts main power supply to the unit when voltage is outside the admitted range (not
against peaks)
ACTAST Adapter for software up/download with
laptop
ACTHKEY Hardware key for software up/download
ACTRAS Remote air temperature sensor
Second sensor for internal temperature, to be placed in a critical zone of the shelter (for
instance near UPS)

WDI = WDE + EC compressor + EEV
June 2012
Stulz SpA – TLC + HD products
•EC modulating compressor. Brushless motor with permanent magnet technology
•Volume ratio of scroll optimised for highest efficiency in cooling mode
•High power factor•Integrated functions: softstart;
crankcase heater•Direct control of working parameters
and compressor envelope in all working modes.
•Built-in compressor protection and safety features
•Positive displacement oil pump to provide lubrication and sealing at entire speed range
•Special control algorithm for oil management
EC compressor
•Controlled by the same driver of the compressor. Short transient time and higher efficiency
•More reliability: reduced stress of refrigerant circuit during variation of compressor speed
Electronic expansion
valve
STULZ – THE NATURAL CHOICE 23
WDI vs. WDE
June 2012
Stulz SpA – TLC + HD products
WDE: ON-OFF compressor WDI: EC modulating compressor
Inefficiency caused by transients when unit starts. High loss of efficiency at partial loads.
Best efficiency at partial loads.
Application is not flexible: the cost of oversizing the unit is the low efficiency.
High flexibility of application: oversizing the unit, no need to change it when cooling demand increases due to site upgrades.
With on-off compressors, anti short cycle protection limits the number of on-off cycles to 10 / hour. Therefore, during off cycles, temperature increases far from the set point.
With inverter compressor, temperature is close-controlled, with smooth fluctuations following the variations of heat load.
Power factor = 85% – 90% Power factor = 96 – 98%
High in-rush current: with a limitation of power supply line to the site, softstart is needed.
No in-rush current with a special control of ramp-up phase (inverter control with DC current injection).
Crankcase heater needed for low temperature applications.
Crankcase heater functionality in the control software.
On-off cycles operational stress for compressor (overheating of motor windings) shorter life cycle
Continuous operation longer life cycle of compressor.
STULZ – THE NATURAL CHOICE 24
WDI vs. WDE
June 2012
Stulz SpA – TLC + HD products
WDE: ON-OFF compressor WDI: EC modulating compressor
Modulation of condenser fan.Evaporator fan is on-off.
Full modulation of all components in cooling mode: compressor, condenser fan, evaporator fan. Evaporator fan speed is controlled according to the cooling capacity. Working logic keeps the difference between return and supply air temperature constant around an adjustable set point.
Refrigerant R407C. Maximum outdoor working temperature = 50°C
Refrigerant R410A. Maximum outdoor working temperature = 45°C
400/3+N/50 and 230/1/50 power supply available

• Compared to WDE, the following options are not available: R134a is not available for EC compressors 400/3+N/50 power supply at the moment is not available. Only 230/1/60 available at 60 Hz CRA – crankcase heater is integrated in EC compressor SOFTM – softstart is integrated in control logic of EC compressor VCC – voltage control card is integrated in control logic of EC compressor
• Compared to WDE, the following accessory has been added: ACTSEQPRG: sequencing is not via slave port, but via PRG port. So the interface
ACTSEQPRG is necessary. This interface provides the PRG port with the phone connector matching sequencing cables ACTSEQC2 / ACTSEQC10
NOTE: sequencing and telemonitoring are not available in the same time as they
pass through the same PRG port.

Free-Air units
The use of free cooling offers potential of high energy savings. In shelters where only comfort A/C units are used for cooling this potential is still unused.
• where comfort A/C units work with a high part of latent capacity
• where diesel generators produce the required power
Retrofitting provides a very fast return on investment in shelters….

power relay integrated on C102 IO-Controller
mains supply for comfort A/C units: 230 V AC max. 20 A
battery power supplyfor FCL: 48VDC
• Enabling of Free cooling (FCL) and ON/OFF DX-mode of the comfort A/C units via
C102-controller
• Technical precondition: The comfort A/C units must be provided with automatic restart
after power failure
STULZ – THE NATURAL CHOICE 65
• Control and monitoring of Free-Air-3 and connected
comfort A/C-units
• Possibility to control 1 A/C unit + 1 external heater
• Measurement and transmission of DC power
consumption
• Monitoring of DC voltage to stop the unit when voltage is
outside the admitted range and battery charge gets low
• To preserve back-up battery: fan speed can be reduced
in case of mains power failure

C102 controller functions
Stulz SpA – TLC + HD products
STULZ – THE NATURAL CHOICE 66
• Filter alarm can be triggered by differential pressure or
via a manually adjustable fan operating time
• Comfort mode: fan of Free-Air unit can be stopped for
an adjustable time interval to service the other
equipments in the shelter. Comfort A/C units can still
work to keep the temperature. Restart is automatic
• Semi-automatic test function for start-up
• Telemonitoring via ModBus and Stulz SCP protocols

Free cooling
• Free-Air units can be operated on their own
or in combination with comfort A/C units. As
soon as the temperature difference between
shelter and ambient is big enough, the C102
control logic stops the comfort A/C units and
enables free cooling mode.
• Fan speed control by C102, with adjustable
min and max speed
Cooling
• Outside of the free cooling conditions,
cooling takes place only through the comfort
A/C units (if present).
• C102 on board the Free-Air units controls up
to two comfort A/C units. Different start
values of internal temperature can be
assigned to each unit.

STULZ – THE NATURAL CHOICE 68Stulz SpA – TLC + HD products
• When assisted free cooling is selected and free cooling conditions are present, the A/C
units can work together with Free-Air for a maximum cooling effect.
• When this working mode is not selected, cool is produced alternatively by either the
A/C units or the Free-Air.
