1 Sunday, September 11, 2016 - 24rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE STATIONS OF THE SORROWS OF MARY & OUR PATRONAL FEAST DAY THIS TUESDAY: Thanks to all
who participated in the seven evenings of the prayer novena devotion from Friday, September 9th to Thursday, September 15th-
our Patronal Feast Day. The novena concludes Thursday - our Patronal Feast Day - with a Mass at 7:15pm. We are blessed
to have our parish and school under the patronage of Mary, Our Mother of Sorrows. Our most popular prayer shrine within the
church is the Pieta, where Mary is depicted holding the dead body of Jesus in her arms. So many people frequent that space
unburdening and trusting the sufferings and sorrows of life through the intercession of our compassionate mother. The twelfth
station shrine is probably the second most frequented prayer corner within our church. An image of the sorrowful mother depicts
her presence on Calvary as Jesus, the child of her womb, dies on the cross. Adjacent to the twelfth station also is an image of the
Shrine to Our Mother of Sorrows between the eleventh and twelfth station at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Again at this location it is an appropriate depiction of our patroness here in this Church of Our Mother of Sorrows.
The following poem, which I penned a few years ago, is dedicated to our patroness.
Our Mother of Sorrows Prayer: Lord Jesus, as members of this community of faith under the patronage of Our Mother of Sorrows, we thank You for the gift of Your last will and testament on the cross. We thank You for bestowing Your mother to us,
and bestowing us to Your mother. Bless us with the gift of fidelity as we contemplate her journey with You from the womb to the
tomb. Enrich us in our prayerful contemplation of the Seven Stations of her great sorrows. Open our hearts to the gifts of her heart - the gifts of a listening heart, contemplation, loving compassion, faithfulness, peace and humility. Our Mother of Sorrows,
pray for us. Amen.
ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA OUTDOOR SHRINE: Thanks to so many parishioners who participated in the special
devotion and ritual blessing of St. Teresa of Calcutta’s outdoor shrine after the Masses last weekend. Pope Francis canonized
Mother Teresa last weekend. He was adding his voice to those of the millions around the world who already regarded her as a
saint. Our outdoor shrine has recognized her saintly presence since her death in 1997.
St. Teresa of Calcutta has become a symbol of God’s goodness and love for people everywhere. When she died on
September 5, 1997 her congregation, the Missionaries of Charity, encompassed 594 homes in 123 countries. She left behind her
more than 3,800 sisters, nearly 380 brothers, 13 priests and countless co-workers all committed to living in her spirit of loving the
poorest of the poor throughout the world.
Our outdoor shrine to St. Teresa of Calcutta is a tangible reminder to us of the company we keep. Her shrine, like our other
outdoor shrines, become prayer corners for informal prayer, reflection and devotion.
MINISTRY AWARENESS: The weekend has been rescheduled from September 17-18 to October 15-16. Rescheduling it with
this mid-October time puts it back in sequence for the annual holistic stewardship weekend. More information will be shared in
upcoming bulletins on the annual holistic season of time, talent and treasure.
PARISH STAFF/SCHOOL FACULTY RETREAT NEXT FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH: Our parish staff and school
faculty will have their annual retreat day at the Benedictine Monastery on Country Club next Friday from 8:15am to 3:15pm.
Please pray God’s blessings upon us as we take this day apart to rest in and with the Lord of the ministry.
FIESTA 2016: Our upcoming annual Fiesta will be on the weekend of September 30 through October 2nd. The Fiesta each year
is a wonderful community gathering of our parish and school and surrounding neighborhood. The primary focus of this annual
event is indeed community, fellowship and friendship sharing. The income from the Fiesta is a blessing in helping some
maintenance needs within the parish each year. The income from this year’s Fiesta is being designated towards needed attention
to flooring underneath the pews in the church and also some immediate attention to the pews, which are 58 years old - as old as
the parish.
The loving service of almost 300 volunteers becomes the life-blood of our parish Fiesta. All parishioners are invited to
consider sharing some loving service hours in any of the many areas of service through the Fiesta weekend.
(1) “There stood His mother
Beside the cross of Jesus.”
Her mother’s heart all embracing
Enfolded her dying Son.
(2) Her maternal heart pierced through,
Becomes a sacrificial altar.
In the deepest suffering sorrow,
Mary lives out fully her “fiat”.
(3) Her “fiat” spoken to the angel
-“Behold the handmaid of the Lord
Let it be done to me according to thy word.”
Now the Word is fulfilled and crucified
(4) The dead mangled body taken down
Is now laid in her priestly arms
Against the broken altar of her heart.
You are now the Mother of Sorrows
(5) Belonging not only to the fruit of your womb,
But to all brothers and sisters bequeathed by your Son.
Our Mother of Sorrows – you, too, are our treasure – Our Mother,
Through the last will and testament of your Son.
Our Mother of Sorrows

Scripture Reflection September 11, 2016 - 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 14:25-33
To the Pharisees and scribes who accuse him of poor
choices in his friendships and associates in Sunday’s
gospel, Jesus responds with stories rather than accusations
against them and their self-righteousness. Jesus hopes
these parables will awaken them to a new way of seeing
reality, a way that is Jesus’ way of mercy as Pope Francis
reminds us in Amoris Laetitia.
The parables are about losses – a lost sheep, a lost
coin, a lost son – and about celebrations for the found
sheep, the found coin, and for the returning, repentant
child. The longest parable is about a father’s losing not
only the son who leaves home but also the son who has
been distant for far too long and whose resentments
consume him when his brother returns.
Both sons, Jesus implies, are eventually reconciled
with their father who blames neither son. For the younger,
the father plans a party. To the older son, the father says,
“All I have is yours.” On one level in these stories, Jesus is
telling his critics and us that in our judgment of others or
when we are most critical of ourselves, we are missing the
reality that God’s love and forgiveness transcend anything
that they or we may have done or said. On another level,
Jesus affirms that experiences of loss, of grief, and of
powerlessness may be precisely the ones that lead us to
new awareness and new reasons for gratitude.
Adult Confirmation Classes: This 9 week series is for
Catholic adults who are lacking Confirmation. Series is
offered at 7pm, Tuesday evenings starting September 20,
2016. Confirmation will be received at Christ the King on
November 19, 2016. Cost is $40 for materials. Call the parish

“Lectio Divina” Praying with the Scriptures:
Tuesday, September 20 & Tuesday, November 22
7:00 pm On these evenings, Msgr. Tom will facilitate a “how to pray
with the Scriptures” process for beginners at 7pm in the
Church – meet by Daily Chapel. God’s Word is a deep source
of prayer and is alive, active, and effective in transforming our
lives when we engage in its prayerful reading and meditation
leading us to prayer and contemplation. When we set aside
quality time to do this with an open and seeking heart, God
speaks to us through the power of His Word. These evening
sessions for beginners will help participants discover and
enjoy the simple, yet powerful beauty of “Lectio Divina”…
divine reading of Sacred Scripture. Approximately 90
minutes. No fee, RSVP appreciated. Call the parish office for
more information.
Did You Know… By virtue of the sacrament of Holy
Orders Catholics can enjoy the spiritual benefit of blessings
given “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit” by deacons, priests or bishops.

because we share the one Bread and the one Cup.

reduce our carbon footprint. A few suggestions from the
HOMES category include: when choosing new appliances
look for the Energy Star label for superior energy
efficiency; turn off lights not being used & choose LED or
fluorescent bulbs; monitor your thermostat so it is not too
hot or cold; insulate & seal (caulking, weather stripping)
your home to reduce drafts & air leaks; consider adding
solar panels to your home’s roof (look for financial
incentives that may be offered). Other categories suggest
ways we can help heal our earth home and be worthy
stewards of God’s creation in our FOOD CHOICES and
our WATER & ENERGY use.
