Several problems fitting in TAN1. bumps in the ZDC, biggest bumps flattened

& threaded rods were inserted through the empty screw holes in the 2 hadronic modules

2. Poor assembly of TAN improved3. The slope of the LHC, the bottom of the ZDCs

has been bevelled 4. Limitations of crane; Paul and Ianos have

come up with a much better design that should be much cheaper than option proposed by CERN. (See ZDC_crane.ppt for full details)

Partial Vertical Extraction

Twin Lead screws (not shown) located vertically between each end of the

Lift frame and outer frame pull ZDC from slot..

Partial RotationClever Bell assembly is rotated slightly upward and out toward transport side of tunnel. Motion is again by a pair of lead screws which spanbetween each set of fixed and rotating leaves.

“Clever Bell” mated to Shielding Pig

Clever Bell assembly mates on alignment pins to pig. Alignment blocks

on sideof TAN allow accurate pre-placement of pig.

ZDC Fully lowered into Pig

Human intervention then to disconnect ZDC fromcrane. Pig is removed,

pig containing copper bars put in place, affixed to crane and procedure

reversed. Copper bar module must be built to duplicate the manner in

which ZDC attaches to lift frame.

Schedule

• Right hand ZDC will most likely be installed sometime in weeks 7,8 or 9, left sometime between Feb 24 and Apr 9

• Getting crane approved and built by then is a great challenge but everyone on ZDC team will work on this

• KU, Iowa will cover these times but we could do with help

Trigger

• ZDC has very simple “on”, “off” contributions to trigger that will be used for beam tuning, diffraction and heavy ion.

• Need to start programming frim-ware for this. One student coming to CERN for 3 months, perhaps he could learn how to do this.

ZDC => LHCC

• We have not yet presented ZDC project to LHCC. Skuja approved the the report but we are trying to improve its “look and feel”

• Oleg and David d’Enterrira are working on this
