He was Conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra 1987–1989, of the Joensuu City Orchestra 1993–2000 and of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra 1995–2000. Principal Guest Conductor of the Seinäjoki City Orchestra 2000–2010, he began as the Artistic Advisor of the Joensuu City Orchestra in January 2010 and was reappointed as its Artistic Director in spring 2011.

A regular guest conductor with Finnish opera associations, the Finnish National Opera and symphony orchestras, Atso Almila has appeared abroad mainly in Sweden, Ireland and Switzerland. He is to conduct at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in summer 2013.

Almila is the composer of five operas, four symphonies (the fourth of which is also a ballet), works for wind orchestra, concertos for many instruments, solo and chamber music for both strings and winds, and music for stage and screen.

Atso Almila studied in the conducting classes of Jorma Panula (orchestral) and Harald Andersén (choral) at the Sibelius Academy, and himself taught conduc-ting at the Academy from 1991 to 2010. He begins as fixed-term Professor of orchestral conducting at the Sibelius Academy in August 2013.

In autumn 2006 the Association of Finnish Symphony Orchestras awarded Atso Almila its gold medal for his contri-bution to orchestral life in Finland.

In summer 2012 she was the soloist in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto at the Liminka Music Festival. She has been a pupil of Réka Szilvay at the Junior Sibelius Academy since au-tumn 2011. One of his gre-atest motivations has been playing in an orchestra, and most of his spare time is spent doing this: with the Vivo Symphony Orchestra, Tapiola Young Symphonists and Nordea Jean Sibelius Orchestra. Any remaining time he devo-tes to school, hanging out with friends, reading and dreaming about travelling.

THE FINNISH RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAThe Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (FRSO) is the orchestra of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (yle). Its mis-sion is to produce and promote Finnish musical culture. Its Chief Conductor as of autumn 2013 will be Hannu Lintu, following a season (2012/2013) as the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor. The FRSO has two Honorary Conductors: Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Sakari Oramo.

The Radio Orchestra of ten players founded in 1927 grew to symphony or-chestra strength in the 1960s. Its previ-ous Chief Conductors have been Toivo Haapanen, Nils-Eric Fougstedt, Paavo Berglund, Okko Kamu, Leif Segerstam, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Sakari Oramo.

The latest contemporary music is a major item in the repertoire of the FRSO, which each year premieres a number of yle commissions. Another of the orches-tra’s tasks is to record all Finnish orches-tral music for the yle archive. During the 2012/2013 season it will premiere six works commissioned by yle.

The FRSO has recorded works by Eötvös, Nielsen, Hakola, Lindberg, Saariaho, Sallinen, Kaipainen, Kokkonen and others, and the debut disc of the opera Aslak Hetta by Armas Launis. Its discs have reaped some major distinc-tions, such as the BBC Music Magazine Award and the Académie Charles Cros Award. The disc of the Sibelius and Lindberg Violin Concertos (Sony BMG) with Lisa Batiashvili as the soloist re-ceived the MIDEM Classical Award in 2008, in which year the New York Times chose the other Lindberg disc as its Record of the Year.

The FRSO regularly tours to all parts of the world. During the 2012/2013 season it will be heading for Eastern Finland and Southern Europe.

All the FRSO concerts both in Finland and abroad are broadcast, usually live, on yle Radio 1. They can also be heard and watched with excellent live stream quality on the FRSO website (yle.fi/rso).
