10 tips to become an interview success
STORY
Do you have all it takes to be a success in the job but let yourself down in the interview? Not anymore! We’ve got 10 tips to help you become an interview success story.
Know the interviewer. Once you know who you’ll be interviewed by, get online and check them out. LinkedIn and Google are fantastic resources to get information about the person you’re going to meet
Do your research. In our digital world there is no excuse to not research the company you interviewing for. Get familiar with some information about the company that you might be able to use in the interview – this will be very impressive. Be warned – sounding rehearsed will put them off.
Prepare. You know that there are some questions that will always pop up in an interview, so prepare your answers.
Make a good first impression. Within a matter of seconds the interviewer will have already made a judgment about you, so make it a good one. Body language is very important, make eye contact, shake their hand and smile.
Talk about yourself. You will be asked that dreaded question ‘tell me about yourself’. This question is often used as an ice breaker and it’s a good opportunity for you to highlight some of your achievements.
Don’t forget to breathe. It’s great to answer the questions with passion and details but don’t be the interviewee that doesn’t stop talking. If the interviewer stops making eye contact, you’re saying too much. You can use visual aids like charts to really bring your achievements to life.
Rewind. Just had a foot-in-mouth situation? Take a deep breath and ask if you can rephrase your answer. You never know you might just impress the interviewer will your ability to keep calm under pressure.
If you don’t know, just say so. It’s okay to admit if you don’t know the answer to something and it is definitely better to admit it than try and lie your way through it. You can ask the interviewer to rephrase the question or simply say you don’t know.
If you want to impress the interviewer further, ask questions in their interest not just your own. Questions like ‘What does a top performer in your team look like?’ This will show them that you are interested in succeeding in the company and not just a paycheck
Leave a lasting impression. Follow up the interview with a note, email or call to thank them for their time and provide any further information you might have missed out during the interview. A simple follow up will make you stand out and demonstrate your interest in the job.
Remember you only got the interview because they liked you on paper from your resume. Now it’s time to let you personality shine.
