    GOSPEL: Luke 9:28-36 (37-43)

Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with himPeter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to

pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face

changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenlythey saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They

appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, whichhe was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his

companions were weighted down with sleep; but since they

had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men whostood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to

Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make threedwellings, on for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah --

not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloudcame and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they

entered the cloud. 35 This is my Son, my Chosen: listen to

him! 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the

    things they had seen.

(37 On the next day, when they had come down fromthe mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 Just then a man from

the crowd shouted, Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; this

    is my only child. 39 Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all atonce he shrieks. It convulses him and he foams at the mouth;

it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. 40 I begged yourdisciples to cast it out, but they could not. 41 Jesus answered,

Your faithless and perverse generation, how much longermust I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.

42 While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground

in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healedthe boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were

astounded at the greatness of God.)

    WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ?

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased;Hear ye him.

    Matthew xvii. 5.

Therefore beware of those thoughts which ignore theWord, wanting to tear and sunder Christ from God. For He

has not commanded thee to fly up to heaven to stare at whatHe does there, with His angels, but this is His command:

This is my beloved Son; hear ye him. In Him I have comedown to you, so that you can see Me, and hear Me, and

touch Me. There and nowhere else shall all find Me, who

desire Me and long to be free from their sins and saved. Onthis word we should immediately seize, and say: Here God

Himself speaks. I will follow Him and listen to no otherword or preaching, and neither learn nor know anything else

about God. For in this Person (says St. Paul) dwells the

fullness of the Godhead, and apart from Him there is no Godthat I can meet or draw near to. And where this mans word

is heard or His work seen, the word and work of God aretruly heard and seen.

    FROM LUTHERS PRAYERS:

O Father, relieve our consciences, now and in the hour of

death, from the terror of our guilt and the fear of your

judgement. Let your peace come into our hearts that we mayawait your judgement with joy. Be not severe in your

judgement of us, or no man will be found righteous. Teach us,dear Father, not to trust nor find comfort in our own merits or

good works. But teach us to venture and resign ourselvesfaithfully and firmly to your infinite mercy. In the same

manner let us not lose courage because of our sinful and guilty

lives. Let us regard your mercy as higher and broader andstronger than all our being. Amen.

    FROM LUTHERS SMALL CATECHISM:

    The Lords Prayer:The Second Petition

    Your kingdom come.

    What is this?

In fact, Gods kingdom comes on its own without

prayer, but we ask in this prayer that it may also come tous.

    How does this come about?

Whenever our heavenly Father gives us his Holy Spirit,so that through the Holy Spirits grace we believe Gods

Holy Word and live godly lives here in time andhereafter in eternity.

    THE TRANSFIGURATION

    OF OUR LORD

Almighty God, on the mountain you showed yourglory in the transfiguration of your Son. Give us the

vision to see beyond the turmoil of our world and tobehold the king in all his glory; through your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
