Some updates about our Parish, the Coronavirus and “Going Green” On behalf of our Deacons and Staff, I would like to thank everyone for their enthusiasm as we returned to public Masses two weeks ago. I assure you that no one was happier than me. Here are some things we are hoping will happen as we move from the “yellow phase” to the “green phase.”
o Our hope is to bring back the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass with the first weekend of July. o Our hope is to also bring back some music that same first weekend of July. o Moreover, our hope is to begin rotating back in Sacristans, Lectors and Extraordinary
Ministers with that first weekend in July. o Lastly, our hope is to keep the Facebook Live Mass going for at least the near future.
Again, we are taking things slowly and cautiously for the common good, because the virus is still out there and still dangerous. During this period of transition, we thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation. In addition, we are still asking those with pre-existing conditions or general health issues to please consult their physicians before returning to Mass.

June 28, 2020 – Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Last month the Smithsonian magazine featured a story about a little known visit of George Harrison to the quiet town of Benton, Illinois. “Who is George Harrison?” some of you younger folks may ask. He was the lead guitarist of the Beatles, the famous “Fab Four” of the 60’s and 70’s and beyond who entertained the world. They came out of Liverpool, England. It happened that George had a sister who lived in Benton (pop. 7,000 at the time).
The story detailed just how the townspeople welcomed young Harrison, long before his world fame. To them he was just Louise’s brother, and despite what they thought about his strange haircut and his torn jeans, they believed he deserved their hospitality. The few that got to hear him play his guitar really liked what they heard. For my purposes here, it was the kindness of his reception from the townsfolk that I point out as something we can emulate in our own lives from a spiritual outlook.
The story I read concludes with this statement: “For his own part, George never said much about his visit beyond noting somewhat wistfully in a letter to Louise shortly after his return to England, that he’d enjoyed her friends and neighbors: ‘They’re great people. They were glad to see me—not because I’m a Beatle, but because I’m me.’”
That complement to the people of Benton sprang from an appreciative visitor. I hear echoes of that famous Last Judgment scene later in Matthew’s gospel, where the King says to those on his right “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” This pandemic that has forever changed our lives and our memories of 2020 compels us to deduce helpful lessons even before it definitively ends. One of those has to be a renewed awareness of the value and importance of our friends. Now we will relate to them in better ways. Add to that the significance of hospitality. Any stranger we meet can become our friend.
Of course our holy Faith brings with it an added dimension to our unexpected new insight. It reminds us that every person is a child of God, beginning with the members of our families. Even if it may be hard to accept, this also includes those on our “enemies list.” We realize that Gospel living is not all that complicated, and is rather quite connected to our being human and in love with Christ. It’s the smile, the word, and that cup of water given in His name. Bear in mind that there is a distinction between hospitality and entertainment. “Entertaining says, ‘I want to impress you with my home, my clever decorating, my cooking. Hospitality, seeking to minister, says, ‘This home is a gift from my Master. I use it as He desires.’” (Karen Mains in Open Heart, Open Home, Elgin, Ill.:Cook, 1976)
Reading I: 2 Kings 4: 8-11, 14-16 a This story of the Shunite woman who offered hospitality to the prophet Elisha became part of the legends of the people. Her reward for her hospitality is the promise of a son, thus removing her shame.
Reading II: Romans 6: 3-4, 8-11 Paul teaches his readers how the new Christian life brings a certain kind of freedom from the old self through a new union with Christ. Baptism is the key, because it identifies us with Christ’s death and resurrection, transforming us from within and changing our conduct.
The Gospel: Matthew 10: 37-42 How we react to Christ determines our future destiny regarding salvation. Just as Jesus represented His Father, so succeeding Christian ministers represent Jesus. Our ultimate fate is linked to how we receive them. God rewards even a cup of water given to the lowly among us. 09-033
