The 100 Mile House Little Britches Rodeo is a definite “go” for May 18, but as it stands, there will be no parade.
That is, unless volunteers come for-ward to take the reins and organize it.
South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce executive director Angela Cole says the chamber does not have the resources to do it, and while 100 Mile & District Outriders Club hosts the rodeo, club president Mike Kidston
says they don’t have enough manpower to take charge of the parade.
“The Outriders are stretched to organize just the rodeo and we’ll need lots of help on the weekend.”
Kidston notes he would like to see more volunteers step forward to help at Little Britches, espe-cially members of rodeo families who know the ropes.
“I don’t see the same ranching com-munity involvement anymore.”
Little Britches will be followed by the South Cariboo Rodeo Association Rough Stock Rodeo which is slated for May 19-20 and both events take place at the Outriders Arena, located behind the South Cariboo Rec. Centre.
Kidston says the grounds will have a new look as Outriders club mem-bers have been renovating the stock holding pen area, replacing the old structures with new metal pens.

The following highlights are from the Cariboo Regional District board meeting in Williams Lake on March 22.
Audited statementsChartered accountants Kane Fraser and JoAnne
Francis presented the Cariboo Regional Hospital District (CRHD), the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District (CCRHD) and the Cariboo Regional District’s (CRD) 2012 audited financial statements. According to Fraser, the financial posi-tion of the corporations remains strong.
For inquiries call the CRD’s chief financial officer at 250-392-3351 or toll free at 1-800-665-1636.
Funding soughtThe CRD will be submitting an application
for funding to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Supporting Treaty Implementation program.
Applications are currently being accepted by UBCM for the program, whereby local govern-ments may recover eligible operating costs for treaty advisory committees participating at treaty negotiation tables at Stage 4 or Stage 5. In past years, the CRD has received $15,000 in funding.
Taxes held to CRD targetDuring the meeting, both the CCRHD and
the CRD proposed 2013 Budgets and Five-Year Financial Plans were adopted.
At the end of 2012, the board of directors pro-vided CRD staff with a 2013 budget target goal of a zero per cent maximum requisition increase for inflationary purposes. The overall 2013 budget, including new/and or improved services, came in at a 0.8 per cent decrease. Without including new services, the tax requisition for 2013 is 2.5 per cent less than the requisition for 2012.
Board meetingThe next CRD board meeting will be held today
(April 12) in Williams Lake.

Parents and caregiv-ers need to remember to keep poisons out of reach of children.
Each year, more than 25,000 poison-ings are reported to the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre (DPIC) and nearly half of these involve chil-dren. Toddlers between the ages of one to three years have the highest rate of poisoning.
The most common “poisons” affecting children are cleaning
substances, pain and fever medications, vita-mins, and plants. The most serious are medi-cations belonging to adults or older children, especially prescription pain killers, sedatives, and medicine for dia-betes or heart disease. Once-a-day gradual-release medications can be especially lethal for children.
Children investigate purses or backpacks and may find medicines in zip-lock bags or daily
dosette contain-ers. In some cases parents assume chil-dren can’t open “ch i l d - pro of ” caps when, in fact, caps on pill bottles are actually “child-resistant” and children can open them with enough time.
Grandparents need to remem-ber to keep their medications out of sight and out of reach of chil-dren and to remove their medications from purses and luggage when they visit a grand-child’s home. Studies have shown that grand-parents’ medications are involved in 10-20 per cent of poisonings in young children.
If you think your
child has been exposed to a medication or chemical, call DPIC’s Poison Control Centre at 604-682-5050 or 1-800-567-8911. DPIC is a program of the BC Centre for Disease Control. It offers a 24-hour telephone sup-port and advice line staffed by pharmacists and nurses who provide expert treatment advice
on chemical or medi-cine poisonings and overdoses.
Poison awareness and first aid pamphlets are available in Chinese, English, French, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Other materials include a “Plant Awareness” pamphlet, posters, and phone stickers and magnets. Materials are free of charge for British Columbia residents and can be obtained from www.dpic.org, by e-mailing [email protected], or by calling 604-707-2789, extension 3.
The BC Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reported 900 sales with a value of $212,173,760 through the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in the first quarter of 2013.
This compares with 1,002 sales worth $220,464,326 to the end of March 2012. As of March 31, there were 3,815 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS® compared to 3842 at this time last year.
BCNREB president Gisela Janzen says the hous-ing markets in the communities throughout the BCNREB continued to perform at a modest pace throughout the first quarter of 2013.
“Continuing low mortgage interest rates com-bined with lower prices have improved affordability in some areas. Potential buyers who have stayed on the sidelines will likely enter the market place in a typical spring and summer market throughout the North,” the 100 Mile House realtor explains.
Cariboo Region(2012 values appear in brackets)100 Mile House and area: A total of 49 (38)
properties of all types worth $9.8 million ($6.7 mil-lion) have been sold by realtors in the area since the beginning of the year. In addition to the 15 single-family homes that sold, 10 parcels of vacant land and 12 homes on acreage changed hands so far this year.

Housing sales up in Cariboo
After extensive con-sultation with the small business community, Minister of State for Small Business Naomi Yamamoto and British Columbia Chamber of Commerce president and CEO John Winter unveiled the finalized BC Small Business Accord (BCSBA) recently.
In October 2012, the B.C. Liberal gov-ernment announced it would create the BCSBA to establish a list of priorities to make B.C. the most business-friendly jurisdiction in Canada.
A consultation peri-od was launched to determine guiding principles that should be included in the accord, and more than 35,000 people provided feedback through com-munity meetings, an online survey and the #BCBizChat Twitter town hall.
On Feb. 5, 2013, a BCSBA forum, made up of 15 business own-ers/operators from various regions and sectors around B.C., used the feedback from the consultation period to determine the accord principles and establish action items for the provincial gov-ernment.
The BCSBA contains the following principles:
• Consider the needs and impacts of small businesses in policy and program decisions to enhance business certainty, access to qualified labour, access to capital and technol-ogy adoption.
• Foster a regulatory environment that small business can access, navigate and influence effectively and efficient-ly.
• Design provincial government programs and resources affect-
ing small business, so they are well developed, accessible, properly funded and effectively communicated.
• Foster thoughtful collaboration among all levels of government, including First Nations.
• Deploy educational and training programs that are future-focused and aligned to meet the changing needs of small business and the labour talent it develops.
• Create long-term growth opportuni-ties for small business through government procurement.
The BC Small Business Accord forum’s action items for the pro-vincial government are:
• Develop a Small Business Awareness Strategy.
• Encourage pro-v i n c i a l / m u n i c i p a l collaboration in the adoption of the BC Small Business Accord principles.
• Develop a Mobile Training Program for Remote Communities
so they will be better able to access skills training and qualified labour.
• Reduce barriers to government’s procure-ment process.
• Support an Integrated Small Business Mentoring Program.
• Support additional skills training.
The province already has taken initial steps to address the action items, including the fol-lowing:
• Provide incentive for local governments by establishing a $10,000 award for up to 20 municipalities that can best demonstrate they are operating within the spirit of the accord principles.
• Appoint a senior official to consult directly with small business owners to identify barriers to accessing provincial government procure-ment opportunities, develop recommenda-tions to remove those
barriers and report back to government within six months.
• Develop a mobile trainers program under which trainers will travel to communities to provide skills train-ing and certification using existing equip-ment in colleges and industry during times when that equipment is idle.
The BCSBA is a liv-ing document and will evolve to meet the ongoing needs of small business. The provincial government will con-tinue to engage small business owners and operators on Twitter through
#BCBizChat or #SmallBizBC and through the BC Small Business Roundtable.
Fast Bytes• Small business is a
key economic driver in B.C. with 98 per cent of all businesses being small businesses.
• The small busi-ness sector provides nearly 56 per cent of
all private-sector jobs, employs more than one million people and gen-erates 29 per cent of the provincial GDP.
• B.C. is the first government in Canada to enshrine in law the requirement to publish annual reports about regulatory reform, and have reduced regulatory requirements by more than 42 per cent since 2001.
• B.C. was the only province to receive an A from the Canadian Federation of Indepen-dent Business in 2013 for cutting red tape.

The BC Liberal Party is buying a half-hour on TV next Sunday night, so Premier Christy Clark can make her pitch for re-election directly to voters.
The program will air April 14 at 7 p.m. on Global TV, two days before the formal elec-tion campaign begins for the May 14 vote. It will emphasize the economy and include testimonials from com-munity leaders, said Mike McDonald, the B.C. Liberal campaign manager.
“It is also a matter
of basic respect for voters to outline our priorities and poli-cies,” McDonald said.
“We hope the NDP will change course and do the same.”
NDP Leader Adrian
Dix has indicated he will roll out his party’s election platform in a series of announce-ments, an apparent effort to maximize media cov-erage.
Clark has tied her campaign to the government’s heav-ily promoted jobs plan, putting the party at the mercy of volatile federal employment statistics. After a surge of new jobs reported in February, there was an equally steep plunge in the March numbers, push-ing British Columbia’s official unemployment rate from 6.3 per cent to seven.
Clark has also
emphasized her com-mitment to develop liquefied natural gas exports from the B.C. North Coast, a project that has attracted global investment.
Spending and deficits are another focus of the campaign.
The B.C. Liberals tabled a balanced bud-get in March, which the NDP claim has under-stated spending and overstated revenues to the tune of a $790 mil-lion deficit.

Protect yourself and your unborn baby from food-borne illness
Premier Christy Clark has made jobs the theme of her campaign, and volatile federal statistics turned against British Columbia in March. She will be speaking to the public during a 30-minute TV ad on April 14.

Most preg-nant women pay careful attention to their health during preg-nancy by eating right, getting adequate rest and taking prenatal vitamins.
However, it is just as important to take the right steps to pro-tect yourself and your unborn baby from food-borne illness.
Pregnant women are at greater risk of getting sick from food that is improperly handled or cooked.
This is because preg-nancy weakens the immune system, mak-ing expectant mothers vulnerable to certain bacteria, viruses, and other harmful parasites.
Bacteria can also cross the placenta and infect an unborn baby, whose immune system is not
yet developed enough to fight off harmful bacteria. Complications from food-borne illness can include premature labour, miscarriage, stillbirth, or a baby who is born severely ill.
Along with avoiding high risk foods, such as raw or unpasteurized dairy products, pasteur-ized soft cheeses and non-dried deli meats, four easy steps can help protect both you and your baby:
• Clean your hands, kitchen surfaces, cut-ting boards and reusable grocery bags frequently and thoroughly with warm soapy water. Wash raw food, such as fruits and vegetables, under cool water.
• Separate all raw foods, such as meat, poultry, fish and shell-fish, from ready-to-eat
foods to avoid cross-contamination.
• Cook meat, poultry and fish to a safe inter-nal temperature verified by using a digital ther-mometer.
• Chill leftovers with-in two hours.
Health Canada has identified pregnant women as one of the four groups of peo-ple at greater risk for food-borne illness. The other three groups are children aged five and under, people with a weakened immune sys-tem and adults aged 60 and over.
The website www.
healthycanadians.gc.ca/foodsafety offers valu-able information, advice and tips on how women can protect themselves from food-borne ill-ness while pregnant. Resources include a comprehensive list of foods to avoid and safer alternatives, and an interactive guide for how to handle food safely at home and at the grocery store.
You can also order your copy of the guide Safe Food Handling for Pregnant Women on the website, or by calling toll-free, 1-800-O-Canada.

sponsored two sessions (16 logging students) in the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) heavy equipment operator pro-gram in the Kamloops area before Christmas, and two sessions (16 students) in the 100 Mile House area since Christmas.
The logging blocks in
the 100 Mile House area are in the 100 Mile House Community Forest and the District of 100 Mile House councillors were supportive of combining the logging of the timber licence with the training of the logging students through TRU.
Students received training on all the pieces of equipment that would be found on most log-
ging sites, including the faller-buncher, skidder, delimber, bulldozer, loader and excavator.
West Fraser Mills per-sonnel have assisted in laying out the logging block boundaries, giving pre-logging training ses-sions in the classroom, calculating trucking times for the logging trucks, supervising log quality and other on-
site activities, as well as participating in safety training.
In addition to the log-ging students, several logging truck drivers in the TRU programs have been trained by local truck drivers.
It has been very rewarding to see some of the participating stu-dents secure jobs in the forest industry.
Kelly Powell is West Fraser Mill’s operations forester in 100 Mile House.

Multiple consum-ers have told the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in British Columbia they have been con-tacted by an overseas computer repair com-pany offering virus protection and claiming to work for Microsoft.
Last year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) report-ed more than $88,000 lost to the scam with two-thirds of victim’s losses from B.C. This year, the scam has taken more than $10,000 from 38 victims.
How it works?Consumers say they
are being told by these callers that their com-puter has viruses and is in need of protection that only they can offer. Microsoft has no con-nection with these calls and will not call your home to offer virus pro-tection. These calls are aimed at gaining remote access to your computer and collecting exorbitant fees for their services.
According to Microsoft, after gaining access to the computer, these callers can then
install malicious soft-ware, steal personal information, take con-trol of the computer remotely or direct con-sumers to fraudulent websites where they are asked to enter their credit card information.
Microsoft’s Online Safety and Security Centre states that nei-ther Microsoft nor its partners make unsolic-ited phone calls.
Several Prince George-area consumers described the caller as having a foreign accent, and according to the CAFC, the origins of the
calls may be from India. The caller may make
the following claims to appear legitimate:
• Your computer is infected with a virus and it has “somehow” reported that fact to the technical support com-pany.
• Your computer is infected with a virus and it is sending out spam e-mails to people.
• Your computer is “somehow” report-ing critical software or hardware errors to the technical support com-pany, or sending out error messages, and it is
in imminent danger of breaking or failing.
• Your Windows Operating System is cor-rupted and about to fail.
BBB advises consum-ers follow these tips to protect themselves from scammers attempting to access their computer:
• Never give con-trol of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a com-puter support team with whom you are already a customer.
• Never provide your credit card or financial
information to some-one claiming to be from tech support.
• Take the caller’s information down and report it to the CAFC.
If you did allow a caller to access your computer:
• Change the pass-words for your computer, e-mail and online banking/credit card accounts.
• Be sure to run a virus scan
• Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit report if you shared personal and banking information with the scammer.
