British Columbia’s Labour Relations Board (LRB) has ruled public school teachers in the province may initiate further job action and walk out of the classrooms.

A full withdrawal of services for up to three instructional days is allowed by the ruling, providing prior notice of at least two school days is given.

Following that, teachers may also be off the job one out of five days a week, again with notice of not less than two days.

Falling on the cusp of Education

Minister George Abbott tabling legislation on Feb. 28 to force an end of the teachers’ job action, the LRB is effectively providing B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) mem-bers a legal route to escalate the current limited strike action.

Cariboo-Chilcotin Teachers’ Federation president Joan Erb says LRB’s decision on a limited withdrawal of services is “rea-sonable.”

“It provides the best of both worlds to both sides.

“Parents will be happy because there will be two days minimum notice given.”

The thing that really surprises her is picket lines are not allowed in the ruling,

she adds.Because LRB has not set essential-ser-

vice limits for International Union Of Operating Engineers (IUOE) members, the school support staff can’t be barred from work duties by any BCTF disrup-tions, she explains.

That is good news in the sense that their IUOE colleagues won’t be faced with any blocked entries, Erb says, add-ing she is meeting with the local IUOE president this week to find out how those members might react to escalated strike action.

Grizzly bear pâté, beaver, moose and deer were just some of the tasty treats people were able to sample at the Lone Butte Fish & Wildlife Association (LBFWA) Wild Game Dinner at the 100 Mile Community Hall, Feb. 25.

Roast bison was the main course, and LBFWA member Jude Dion says the dinner was phenom-enal and the dance that followed had people up and cutting a rug until nearly 2 a.m.

Earlier in the day, the hall was filled with displays and demonstrations by local outdoors organizations.

“The different groups really did a super job inside the hall. It was something to see.”

Free antler scoring was also offered, with the most notable trophy of the day being a mule deer antler that scored 190 inches.

“That’s excellent,” says Dion, adding 175 is the minimum for having a score registered in the Wildlife Records Club of BC Big Game Records of British Columbia book.

Injury is the lead-ing cause of death among Canadian children and youth.

Preventable inju-ries, such as falls, burns, choking and poisonings, are the most common cause of hospital visits for young children in Canada.

Each year, approx-imately 2,900 infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers under five years go to BC Children’s Hospital emergency depart-ment for treatment of preventable injuries. Up to 90 per cent of these injuries are pre-

ventable.Give Your Child a

Safe Start helps par-ents, caregivers, and educators raise aware-ness of the prevention of unintentional inju-ries in this age group. This new educational resource provides

safety tips on the pre-vention of burns and scalds, choking, falls, and poisoning.

It also gives straightforward use-ful information on car safety, product safety, safe sleeping, and water safety.

The 30-minute video includes pow-erful stories from parents and caregiv-ers whose children were injured, often in a split second.

BC Children’s Hospital, with finan-cial support from the Provincial Health Services Authority’s Population and Public Health Program, is distributing Give Your Child a Safe Start DVDs to pub-lic health units and non-profit organiza-tions across British Columbia, along with an accompany-ing booklet, for use in pre-natal classes,

new baby visits, child health clinics, par-enting groups, and educational classes.

Give Your Child a Safe Start can be viewed at www.bcchildrens.ca/safestart. DVDs may be purchased at www.bookstore.cw.bc.ca for $15 each; enter the DVD title, or search under “Safety” in the “For Families” section.

BCTF president Susan Lambert says that given its lack of success in get-ting government to meet them half way, its members are compelled to try to increase the pressure on both its employer and government.

Erb says she hopes the teachers don’t go out until after the weekend because they have an important Pro-D [conference] on today (March 2).

“So we are extremely hopeful that we will not be escalating job action before Monday. We have Dr. Martin Brokenleg coming in; we have spent thou-sands of dollars and hundreds of hours organizing this Pro-D event.”

The legislation will see an end to the withdrawal of non-essential services underway since last September, prevent any further with-drawal of duties, and assign mediation.

Meanwhile, the

teachers have been without a contract since June 2011.

“I’m hopeful that once the mediator is appointed and we know who that medi-ator is we can come to some agreement,” adds Erb.

Last weekend was quiet for minor hockey, with the RE/MAX Cup adult hockey tournament tying up home ice at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre and Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac la Hache.

A few teams played in out-of-town tournaments, including the Sunrise Ford Mustangs Peewee squad which travelled to McBride.

They started with a 5-2 loss to Edson, with both 100 Mile House goals scored by Masen Fernandes.

The Mustangs had a tough

go with Chase in game 2, suf-fering an 11-3 loss with goals by Caden MacMillan, Fernandes and Reid Davidson.

The team then lost to McBride 9-5, with their last three goals scored in the third period. Davidson was good for a hat trick. Fernandes notched one as did Kolton Allwood.

Atom division Primal Electric Shockers and Free Press Sharp Shooters were in Lillooet where they had mixed results.

The Shockers opened with an 8-5 loss to Lillooet, but turned it around in game 2 against Williams Lake with an 11-0 shutout victory. Game

2 ended in a 4-2 Kamloops victory, and the Shockers’ final with Lillooet ended in a 4-3 loss.

Free Press skated to a 2-and-2 record, opening with an 8-3 loss to Kamloops and following up with a 5-2 defeat to Mission.

They met Williams Lake in game 3 and dominated with an 11-1 victory. They met Williams Lake again and won 10-3.

Novice Central RV Ramblers and Transformers Collision squeezed in a game at Rolf Zeis where the Ramblers led all the way to a 7-2 win, with a hat trick scored by Mason Pincott.

A lot of people dropped in for the grand opening of the Community Learning Cafe at the GROW centre in the South Cariboo Business Centre on Feb. 21.

Janet Wright, 72, of 108 Mile, was disappointed about cancellation of the 2012 Cariboo Marathon, so she skied the 50-kilometre course on Feb. 26, anyway. A few friends accompanied her on the first 20-km stretch and Wright finished the remaining 30-km by herself. Wright has skied the Cariboo Marathon 23 times, completing the 50-km distance each time.

Local champion Colton Searls is off to Calgary to compete in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Order of Chaos, regional event, on March 10.

Searls started play-ing the game 10 years ago, and when 100 Mile House game store, fascination street, started hold-ing tournaments in December 2011 he joined in the fun.

I’m pretty excited, says Searls who will combine his time at the nationals with a small vacation vis-iting relatives in Alberta.

“This is the big-gest event there is before the Nationals in the United States, and then the World Championship in Japan.”

The local store is now an official tour-nament store for Yu-Gi-Oh! fascination street holds regular game weekends, with a Pegasus league starting March 3.

Searls says he beat all the local challeng-ers and won both tournaments to reach the qualifying level to attend the regional event.

“At the very least, the top 4 partici-pants [in the Calgary tournament] will get invites to attend the national tour. I hope I’m on that tour.”

The Yu-Gi-Oh! trad-ing card game is one of strategy, where players create individual decks of collected cards. Two players engage in a

duel while using cards that represent power-ful monsters, magical spells and surprising traps.

“I’ve been playing the game for about 10 years. I find it very challenging. Win or lose, it’s just a lot of fun.”

The tournaments were tough, Searls says, adding that even though some of his opponents were younger, they’re

smart. Winning the game has a lot to do with the finder cards and “the luck of the draw,” he adds.

fascination street co-owner Jason Maisonet says the tournament week-ends are well attended with between 12 and 14 youth.

“Colton has done extremely well. We’re pretty proud of him and wish him all the best.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s personal Canadian flag is usually flown above the British Columbia leg-islature only during her visits, a tradition that was added Feb. 6 to mark her 60th year on the throne.

The flag was raised at the legislature at sunrise, com-memorating Feb. 6, 1952 when Elizabeth II began her reign after her father King George VI died. Elizabeth II is now the longest-serving British monarch after Queen Victoria.

Premier Christy Clark issued a statement con-gratulating the Queen on the occasion.

“Her Majesty is no stranger to British Columbia,” Clark said.

“She has visited more than a dozen cities, towns and communities during her four tours to our province, including in 1971 to mark the centennial anniversary of B.C.

joining Confederation.”In Ottawa, Gov. Gen.

David Johnston presented the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal to 60 Canadians for public service. B.C. recipients included:

• Tomas Avendano of Vancouver for his work with new immigrants.

• Barney Ellis-Perry of North Vancouver for his work with Volunteer Canada.

• Darrell Fox of Vancouver for continuing the cancer research and education of his brother, Terry Fox.

• Maureen Shaw of Victoria for her leadership in occupational health and safety and education for manufactur-ing workers.

• Master Seaman Christopher Mark Switzer of Victoria for his contributions to the Royal Canadian Navy and local chari-ties.

• Lauren Woolstencroft of North Vancouver for her contri-bution to alpine skiing and the Paralympics.

The depression recovery seminar returns to 100 Mile House April 10 and runs for eight Tuesday nights, with a free introductory session March 6.

The seminar will be directed by local physician Dr. David Ramorasata, with all sessions in the multi-purpose room at the

South Cariboo Health Centre.

According to sta-tistics, two million Canadians suffer with depression each year, and depression is the leading cause of work loss in Canada. It costs businesses about $2 billion a year.

Dr. Ramorasata and his team will hold the free introductory session March 6 at

7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the South Cariboo Health Centre. There is a cost for materials.

To register, call Sue or Curtis at 250-395-1142, or e-mail: [email protected].

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is seeking comments on a disease surveillance plan for salmon in British Columbia.

The aim of the sur-veillance is to get a comprehensive pic-ture of the health status of B.C. salmon. Fish will be tested for three diseases: infec-tious haematopoietic necrosis, infectious pancreatic necrosis and infectious salm-on anaemia.

The CFIA will lead the surveillance with support from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the province of B.C. and industry. All testing, as well as any activi-ties undertaken to respond to confirmed cases of disease, will be directed by science, international guide-lines and national aquatic animal-health requirements.

A p p ro x i m a t e l y 5,000 wild salmon will be collected per year for a minimum of two years, starting in this spring. In addi-tion, the CFIA will evaluate ongoing, industry-led testing of farmed salmon.

The design of the

proposed surveil-lance plan was based on internationally accepted surveillance principles and devel-oped by the CFIA in consultation with DFO, the prov-ince of B.C. and the United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. A summary of the initiative is available on the CFIA website at www.inspection.gc.ca/aquatic.

To request a copy of the detailed draft surveillance initia-tive, or to submit comments, contact N A A H P P N S A A @i n s p e c t i o n . g c . c a . Comments will be accepted until March 16, 2012.

For more infor-mation on salmon diseases, visit www.inspec t ion .gc . ca/aquatic or call 1-800-442-2342.

artist Joanne Young is very talented, and if you ever get chance to view her work, you will real-ize just how talented she really is.

Joanne was a school teacher for 38 years, some of which in School District 27 until her retirement in 2009, and until recently, she served as an on-call teacher.

She has her mas-ter’s degree in art education and taught at a summer art school for a couple of years.

Born in Vancouver at St Vincent’s Hospital, it was later on she realized art would become her passion in life. After moving into the 108

Mile, she became involved with the Art Students Gallery in 100 Mile and even-tually provided art lessons for students. Now, she is a recog-nized critic for art students.

Joanne is currently doing window paint-ing, using acrylic paints that work well on glass, for a number of local busi-nesses. Folks can see examples of her work at Western Financial, Napa Auto Parts, 108 Gas Station, Donex Pharmacy, 108 Grocery Superstore, Dowes Diner and a number of other loca-tions.

Joanne is a mem-ber of the South Cariboo Lioness Club and can be reached at 250-791-6709.
