The Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership welcomes you to our 23rd Annual International Conference.

Our international conference is one of the most important ways we pursue our mission: “To advance the awareness, understanding and practice of servant leadership by individuals and organizations.”

The program is designed to connect, educate, and inspire servant-leaders from around the world. As you can see, we offer a wide array of speakers, panels, and workshops.

This booklet is designed to help you make the most of your time here. It is laid out to follow the program chronologically. Registrants may attend any workshop during each of the five concurrent sessions.

Indeed, time moves by quickly in a big conference like this one. Often, we don’t have enough time to reflect after attending a particular session. Recognizing the importance of reflection to the overall experience, we have incorporated questions and space for notes in this booklet that might help you remember things you find valuable.

We are honored that you have made this conference a part of your servant leadership journey. Thank you for joining us. Please enjoy the conference!

Before jumping into the conference program, take a moment to think about your dream. What do you dream for your personal servant leadership journey to look like?

What would it look like for your organization to be a servant-led institution?

Who do you hope to connect, network, and learn with?

How do you plan to use the next few days at this conference to take steps toward achieving your dream and vision?

Robert K. Greenleaf

Greenleaf’s declaration that the true purpose of leadership is not merely to improve performance, but improve people fundamentally altered the means and ends of leadership. It made follower well-being a major focus of leadership. Since that time, researchers have come to better understand the concept of wellbeing and how it is achieved. This presentation explores the major models of well-being and how leaders can promote and support their followers in the pursuit of well-being.

In this session, participants will share insights from their own experience with servant-leaders and non-servant-leaders to illustrate essential practices of ex-

emplary leaders. The development of servant-leaders in an organizational environment will be highlighted as participants learn how servant leadership is providing the framework for the new philosophy of leadership in the 21st Century. By the end of this session, par-ticipants will be able to compare and contrast the traditional top down model of leadership with the servant leadership model; discuss the origin and philosophy of servant leadership and why the world needs servant leaders; and discuss the importance of self-awareness.

The development of spirited and servant focused ‘community’ within a company or organi-zation happens intentionally. Nurturing relationship development with each other contrib-utes to the effectiveness of each and every person. This workshop explores the necessary elements an organization needs to focus on to create a sustainable corporate culture that hears all age groups, responds to defined corporate values, and actively ignites the work-force to take responsibility for their partnerships and relationships. The program will spe-cifically look at collaborations from personal, interpersonal, and cultural viewpoints.

The Argentine Tango is the perpetuation of leading, following, and putting the lead into action thereby creating a constant collaboration. This workshop uses kinesthetic activities, self-awareness exercises, and conceptual approaches to enhance attendees’ own leader-ship capabilities, improve the connectedness to their team and leverage the existing po-tential while maintaining balance within the whole system. Attendees will discover a six-step leadership model that is based on years of experience as a business leader as well as the long tradition of tango leadership.

Easily the best kept secret of our business generation is that servant leadership is the leadership of Superperformance. Today it is rapidly supplanting the industrial age com-mand and control model. Servant leadership provides an unmistakable competitive advan-tage, and can be used to differentiate firms that have the best chance of success in today’s intensely competitive and uncertain business environment. This workshop will equip par-ticipants with evidence in favor of this new performance paradigm, a new framework for not only leading but also managing in the 21st Century, and a practical approach for using this knowledge to transform the performance of any organization, project, or individual.

Dave Guerra is Chairman of Thrive-Executives for Servant Leadership in Action, and CEO of Corpus Optima. He is the author of Superperformance, The Superperforming CEO, and Super Projects. He has consulted extensively in the integration of Servant Leadership and Systems Thinking principles to transform individual and organizational performance. He regularly addresses and advises executives from some of the world’s leading companies.

We continue to learn from the writings of Robert Greenleaf, but his own life also offers profound lessons on how to live as a servant-leader. Greenleaf biographer Don Frick de-tails how Bob Greenleaf handled challenges we all face—sneaky bosses, major proposals rejected by superiors, family tragedy, life-work balance, and matters of faith and spirit. Don will share pictures from the Greenleaf family scrapbook, audio tapes, and hitherto-unseen entries from Greenleaf’s dream diaries.

Don Frick has worked professionally as a TV and radio writer/producer, museum educator, university teacher and administrator, entrepreneur, communications consultant, marketer, and trainer on topics ranging from insurance to petroleum products. He has edited, au-thored or co-authored five books, including Robert K. Greenleaf: A Life of Servant Leader-ship, The Seven Pillars of Servant Leadership: Practicing the Wisdom of Leading by Serv-ing, and Implementing Servant Leadership: Stories from the Field. He holds a Master of Divinity degree and a Ph.D. in Leadership and Organizational Studies.

Bruce Springsteen and Robert K. Greenleaf. Two very different men, born into different ages, different environments, different careers. Yet, despite all of their differences, these two men share much in common. Beyond certain superficial similarities—during the 1950’s and 60’s they lived a short distance from one another in New Jersey—we see in the writings of Robert Greenleaf, and in the music and lyrics of Bruce Springsteen, a powerful antidote to cynicism and despair. This workshop will examine this claim through an analy-sis of Springsteen’s songs through the lens of servant leadership characteristics.

This workshop focuses on the core teachings of Robert Greenleaf’s philosophy from his essay The Servant as Leader. It provides the framework for under-

standing the breadth and depth of Greenleaf’s thinking and teaching and how servant lead-ership remains not only evergreen, but vital to serving our communities, organizations and world. This workshop is primarily centered on the individual who, through his or her desire to serve, learn and practice to brighten his or her place in the world.

Isabel Lopez has a long association with the Greenleaf Center, first being chosen to pre-sent the initial Greenleaf workshops across the nation. She has been a speaker and pre-senter at most of the Greenleaf Annual conferences. She is a current faculty member for The Greenleaf Academy. As a past corporate executive supervising hundreds of people and managing multimillion dollar budgets, she is keenly aware of both the perils and joys of institutional life. One of the last “dirty little words” in the world of work is “power.” However, in organizations and our personal lives, power is the energy needed to achieve both the day-to-day necessities and the great achievements which help individuals, teams, and organizations. Given the “flat-world” that we now live in, it is incumbent on all leaders to understand how to leverage and unleash their power in ways that facilitate beneficial actions and outcomes. This workshop will help participants put effective, collaborative methods of

leadership to work in their organizations and leverage the leadership potential of all mem-bers of their teams.

The County of Orange, California, introduced its Leadership Academy (OCLA) in 2004 and presented the first graduating class with the challenge of taking ser-

vant leadership from the classroom to the workplace. This workshop will share the insights gained from applying servant leadership principles in hard times—the shutdown of a Delphi plant in Dayton, Ohio, that manufactured 41 brake assembly product lines. The shutdown, which took place from 2006 to 2008, resulted in the loss of 1,550 jobs. The interactive session will focus on the practical benefits of developing people, and will highlight the “Plan for Every Person” that yielded extraordinary results in safety, the timeliness of deliveries, a low defect rate, and high profitability during the shutdown period. Tom was the Plant Manager and Mary was Human Resources Manager during the two-year period of the shutdown.

Mary Miller is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources through the Society of Human Resource Management. After 31 years with General Motors Corporation and Delphi Corporation, Mary retired and now operates her own professional coaching and speaking company. Tom Green retired after working 36 years for General Motors Corporation and Delphi Corporation. During his career he served as a Delphi Plant Manager at five different facilities in the U.S. and Canada.

The international community has historically been well-intentioned and highly misguided when it comes to international development. We attempt to “help”

by imposing on societies the tools to fix the problems we think they have. At the same time, there are people in the world who are truly in need, so we need to find ways to make the world safer, more prosperous, and more equal by leading first as servants. This work-shop will explore questions such as, “How can we create spaces and opportunities for ser-vant-leaders in the communities/countries/regions where we are trying to do good?” and “How can we be leaders in serving the world to make it a better place?“

Caitlin Kelley’s mission is to help people live their greatest potential and to shift the para-digm of how the West interacts with Africa. After studying African history at Northwestern University, she went to Tanzania where she learned Swahili and worked at a grassroots NGO. While there, she saw the world of local NGO’s from the inside out and met many passionate, educated locals hungry to find lasting ways to make a positive impact in their country. In 2009 she and partner Jafari Msaki founded Africa Volunteer Corps, a service corps for Africans to work in African-initiated development projects.

Every organization is different in its structure, culture, and nuances. However, organizations that are dedicated to servant leadership do share something in common: high performance. This panel will have members share about their respective organizations (United States Air Force, Africa Volunteer Corps, PPC Partners, Inc) and what servant leadership has looked like in its practice there. Participants will have a chance to ask questions to delve deeper

into the stories that are shared. This workshop will be a great place to see a variety of examples and discern ways that servant leadership can enhance your own high performing organization.

Even though academic researchers have only recently become interested in servant lead-ership, it has established legitimacy in the academic field and the pace of research in this area is accelerating. Psychometrically sound measures are available and servant leadership has passed the test of showing incremental validity after controlling for the two most widely studied approaches to leadership, leader-member exchange and transformational leadership. This presentation will answer the question, “Servant leadership research, where have you come from and where are you going?”

Followership is the first form of leadership. In the United States, the leadership exodus of the Baby Boomer generation will create dramatically accelerated

promotions in all types of organizations over the next ten years, and in developing mar-kets around the world, rapid growth is forcing companies to place people in positions of leadership without enough of the right development programs and experiences. The best servant-leaders began their journey by developing strong followership skills. Followership skills help you deliver on the obligations you owe to your leader and to your team. Once you become a leader, your obligation is to serve in both directions. Why? Because anyone who is a leader is also still a follower of someone to whom they are accountable.

One core task of leadership is to build community. Our traditional strategies for dealing with problems of performance, quality, cost,

and employee satisfaction are strong on individualism and weak on community. Commu-nity, often confused with culture, is most often treated as an afterthought, left to special-ists to worry about. This presentation is about the nature of real transformation and what kind of leadership is required to achieve it. Leadership requires sophistication in the meth-odology of convening, valuing listening over speaking, relationship over technology, gifts over deficiencies and possibility over problem solving. Peter will define how communal transformation is about leadership that is independent of style, role modeling, and holding people accountable.

Peter is the author of several best-selling books, including Stewardship: Choosing Service Over Self-Interest, The Empowered Manager: Positive Political Skills at Work, and Commu-nity: The Structure of Belonging. He is a partner in Designed Learning. Peter serves on the Boards of Directors of Cincinnati Classical Public Radio; Elementz, a Hip Hop center for urban youth; and LivePerson, a provider of online engagement solutions. He is on the Ad-visory Board for the Festival in the Workplace Institute, Bahamas. He is a Distinguished Consultant-in-Residence at Xavier University. With other volunteers in Cincinnati, Peter began A Small Group, whose work is to create a new community narrative and to bring his work on civic engagement into being.

The Indiana Achievement Awards recognize Indiana’s nonprofits for exemplary practices and demonstrated effec-tiveness. Created by the Sycamore Foundation in 1999, the Indiana Achieve-ment Awards continue to identify, recognize and reward effective nonprofits for

their outstanding work. In 2012, the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Solution Center passed the stewardship of the awards to the Greenleaf Center.

Award nominees are judged by a coalition of Indiana foundation, nonprofit and business leaders for the organizations’ ability to demonstrate highly effective and high-impact prac-tices. Each award winner receives unrestricted cash grant and a professionally produced organizational video to help tell its story.

Can servant leadership actually create better for-profit and not-for-profit boards? In this workshop, participants will learn: how we got to where we are

today with board governance, why servant leadership makes the most logical sense to cure what ails board governance practices today; what a servant-lead board would look like; and how a new servant-led governance model could not only transform boards and organizations, but also business and society as we know it. No boring board meeting here. This will be a an interactive session that will help people critically think about how to build servant lead practices into their boards.

As a survivor of the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, Kevin saw first-hand an organization torn apart by chaos and unexpected events. A critical

function of this workshop is for attendees to analyze, synthesize, and apply servant leader-ship to their personal experience. This workshop will share lessons from Kevin’s own ex-perience: moving from Dutch Bros. Coffee Spokane’s tendency to focus more on the bot-tom line than employees to the massive turning point when they invested into their em-ployees and viewed profit as a by-product. As a result, the bottom line grew and Dutch Bros has expanded to more locations while better serving their communities.

Kevin Parker is an owner of Dutch Bros. Coffee Spokane, adjunct business professor at Whitworth University, leadership instructor at Fairchild Air Force Base, and a State Repre-sentative from Spokane, Washington. After studying political science at Whitworth, Kevin earned his MBA at George Fox University and later studied leadership at Harvard in their Executive Leadership program. Kevin is currently a Rodel scholar through the Aspen Insti-tute.

Robert Greenleaf considered listening to be the premier skill of a servant-leader and believed that the process of open, reflective listening solved prob-

lems and built strength in other people. We all listen every day, but how well do we lis-ten? This workshop is designed to be a practical “refresher course” in the importance of listening, with exercises for listening effectively during conversations as well when listening to one-way communications. The exercises will address techniques for overcoming the thought-speech differential, enhancing one’s focus, choosing an effective method of note taking, compensating for biases in listening, and asking questions for deeper listening.

Servant leadership is discussed, defined, and implemented. Lives are changed and history is written as those with courage venture into uncommon territory.

Servant leadership certainly has its rewards. Servant leadership also has its challenges, many of which are dismissed or refuted as a heretical admonition of weakness. This work-shop will address, with certainty, the many challenges you’ll face as a servant leader – criticism, rejection, villianization, and sabotage – to name a few. Being a servant-leader is a choice for which one assumes responsibility for the rewards and the associated chal-lenges.

There is an unwritten code for some of the greatest leaders who changed their world by serving first, and leading second. Every leader, regardless of vocation, gender, geography, or industry, must understand the code if they desire to influence their world with a lasting legacy. This code of inner intelligence was manifested by servant-leaders through the cen-turies, and most recently lived out by revered statesman and corporate leaders. This work-shop will examine this code and provide ways for attendees to develop it within them-selves.

Despite the fact that the Texas criminal justice system is sometimes perceived as archaic, some law enforcement and community supervision leaders have committed to servant leadership as a foundational philosophy for their organizations and how they serve their communities. An emphasis on servant leadership has led to positive quantitative results in public safety, rehabilitation, and recidivism, and it has also positively changed bureaucratic organizations in the criminal justice system.
