DesignOmni is a registered business that provides design consultant services to the building industry for the residential and hospitality market sector. The experience base is broad encompassing 40 years of design in a wide range of building types.

I recently was positioned with an American owned design development firm in Shanghai as their Director of Architecture. I am always interested in finding new and interesting means of acquiring new skills as well as a means to put the years of experience in architecture to their best use.

I was previously employed on contract with the firm of K.F.Stone Design International, Shanghai, Daniel Cusimano Architect Inc., in Toronto, and Pellow+Associates Architects in Toronto, Ontario. Prior to this time I worked with Adamson-Associates Architects in Port Credit as a project/ design architect and with HOK Canada/ Urbana Architects in Toronto in a similar position.

The primary role of the Director of Architecture at the Grigorian Design Group is to coordinate the design development of the department and to maintain consistency and quality control in design.

The firm is owned by George Grigorian who arrived in Shanghai 12 years ago from New York to be involved with hotel interior design for the Jing Jiang Hotel Group, who respected and admired his design expertise with The Donald Trump Hotels.

The firm is noted for quality architectural design in period styles that includes Victorian, Beaux Arts, and French Chateaux styles for villa and hotel architecture.

The Director of Architecture position requires co-ordination with the Chinese designers in the office who are knowledgeable in design issues related to building codes regulations and the intrinsic cultural eastern design and experience.

Design presentations to clients are important to understand where refinements need to be implemented based on owner responses to the each design facet. The Director of Architecture in conjunction with the owner, George Grigorian represents the western viewpoint within an eastern context in architecture.

The western design and experience including construction and building detailing is the primary function that I provide at the present time.

The role is to coordinate with the designers and rendering staff the architectural style and appearance of each project. Participation on design teams at conceptual meetings to determine the primary design direction that is needed with each specific project is also provided.

Concepts and design images are drawn by hand and developed with the CAD staff to form the basic building design. The design three dimensional images are then refined in detail in coordination with the rendering staff.

Attendance at presentations to the client are needed and English is translated to Chinese during the presentation.
