The past month has been another whirlwind…I know there were only 28 daysin February, but it just made it go by that much quicker! How time flies!

The surf continues to come in and Super Bowl Sunday brought in unreal surf!Ma‘ili Point was spectacular with its mile out to sea break! Along the entireWestside, clean conditions brought some epic wave-riding. Every day was greatfor surfers! This winter will go down as one of the better surf years.

The Kanaka Ikaika season is at its mid-point, but some great races continueto be held! Race number five went to Kai Bartlett with Pat Dolan and MannyKulukulualani following him in respectively. Watching the competition is anawesome experience!

In Hawai‘i, we are truly blessed to live among some of the greatest waterpeople—in the past month, I chatted with Uncle Buffalo Keaulana, Rabbit Kekai,Nappy and Anona Napoleon, and George Downing. Each shared their “manao”(thoughts) on living here. It is a continuing education to listen and learn fromthem, and to respect them and all who can teach us. This is what we all needto do—a lot more listening and to respect those who can teach us. Mahalo nuito all of you!

Finally, in this issue, Makai has the privilege of publishing the official 30thAnniversary of Buffalo’s Big Board Surfing Classic program. “The job took me throughout theHawaiian Islands, New Jersey, andFlorida, working with Amfac, Hyatt,Adams Mark, and Noble House. I livedand learned every aspect of the hotelindustry,” details Ako.

At the same time, the Iolani graduatemade it a point to immerse himself in anynew community he was living in. “Whilein Daytona Beach from 1997–2000, wethrew concerts on our oceanfront proper-ty during big city-wide special events andbrought in classic rock bands like

Steppenwolf, Edgar Winter Band, BlackOak Arkansas, and Molly Hatchett.” He’smet all the celebrities—and he has onlykind words to say about all of them.

Daytona, Florida is the home of theNascar races, with the DaytonaInternational Speedway, and the annualDaytona 500 and Pepsi 400. Ako workedat the Adams Mark Daytona BeachResort, one of the biggest and best prop-erties in town, so he would always getinvited to the corporate skybox in theWinston Cup Tower to watch the races.

He’s met star racers like Jeff Gordon,Dale Earnhardt, and Bobby Labonte, andtoured the pits with his all-access pass. “Iunderstand the racing culture better, andrealize what great people the racers are,”he remarks. “The whole scene is wild!About 200,000 people were in the crowd.They’re all wearing their favorite racer’sname. The applause is deafening. In ourhotel lobby we’d park a stock car, just toget into the mood. That week is crazy.”

Over the course of three years inDaytona, he met dozens of PlayboyPlaymates. “That was…reallyfun,” putting a few extra sylla-bles in the word “really” foremphasis. Of course, it was allfor work, he emphasizes. Howdedicated, Mike.

With this job, my career experi-ence and personal passion converge intoa dream job,” affirms Ako.

Former coworker and best friend MarkTsuda observes, “Any company is luckyto have him. He’s dedicated and quiteintellectual. He rationalizes and analyzesevery decision- sometimes to the point ofargument! But he’s always asking rele-vant questions.” Tsuda met Ako in 1985when they were both working for theHyatt Waikı̄kı̄.

Aubrey Hawk, who is a club member aswell as the club’s public relations agent,agrees. “In his day-to-day management

style, you can really see his hotel man-agement background: He thinks of theclub as a fine hotel, and the members arehis guests (they just don’t sleep over!).”

When Ako describes his “personal pas-sion” for exercise, he paints with a broadbrush. Ako’s favorite sport is surfing, buthe has or continues to do it all. “Healthclub workouts, triathlons, scuba, kayak-ing, golf, fishing, you name it, I probably

like it,” hedeclares.

A good day for Ako would be surfing athis favorite spot on a four to six foot day(measured Hawaiian style). However, hewon’t disclose the exact location. Typicalsurfer: “Might get too crowded.” All he’llsay is it’s somewhere on the east side.

His other favorite break is Caves atHonolua Beach. “I surfed that all the timewhile working on Maui at the Royal

Lahaina Ka‘anapali. It’s a cool wave. Itbreaks right and it just goes off. It’s got agreat wall,” judges Ako.

He’s been on a board since he was 5years old, getting acquainted with theocean at Bellows. He has two sisters andone brother, but says he’s the only one outof the bunch who loves the ocean. TheAko family grew up on the beach, and asan adult, Mike chose to also buy a houseon the beach in his beloved Hawai‘i Kai.

He now wants to pass on his love forthe water to his two daughters, seven yearold Alana and four year old Mira. “They’re

more into soccer right now,” smiles Ako,“but I take them out now and then. Alanarides on the front of my board and wecatch a wave.” Wife Renee is a stay-at-home mom and “not really a water per-son,” Ako reveals, but he hopes he caninfluence his daughters to like the ocean.

While Ako enjoys surfing for its relax-ing qualities, his competitive side isdrawn to triathlons. “I’ve probably com-peted in over 50 races since I picked upthis sport in 1981,” he tallies. He’sincluding in that count races for justrunning, swimming, or biking, as well asbiathlons and triathlons. “Inspired by theIronman, I entered one of the first

Athlete and businessman Mike Ako is a lucky man, and he knows it. From an idyl-lic childhood growing up in Hawai‘i, to an action-packed life traveling around theworld for work and play, to a close-knit family that he adores, this man has it all.

The 48 year old general manager of the Honolulu Club says he’s living his dream. “Icame to work here in 2003, and it’s a perfect blend of my skill sets and my passionfor exercise,” he says. Ako spent 23 years in the hotel industry, from 1980–2003,managing properties from Hawai‘i to the East Coast (with all but one hotel located onthe beach!)

“I majored in Commercial Recreation at the University of Colorado, and dreamedabout opening my own athletic club upon returning to Honolulu in 1980. As luck wouldhave it, the Honolulu Club beat me to the punch,” he recalls. So instead, he used histalents as a hotel manager.

Athlete and businessman Mike Ako is a lucky man, and he knows it. From an idyl-lic childhood growing up in Hawai‘i, to an action-packed life traveling around theworld for work and play, to a close-knit family that he adores, this man has it all.

The 48 year old general manager of the Honolulu Club says he’s living his dream. “Icame to work here in 2003, and it’s a perfect blend of my skill sets and my passionfor exercise,” he says. Ako spent 23 years in the hotel industry, from 1980–2003,managing properties from Hawai‘i to the East Coast (with all but one hotel located onthe beach!)

“I majored in Commercial Recreation at the University of Colorado, and dreamedabout opening my own athletic club upon returning to Honolulu in 1980. As luck wouldhave it, the Honolulu Club beat me to the punch,” he recalls. So instead, he used histalents as a hotel manager.

Tinmans. I felt I had to start small. Atfirst I did it to compete against myself,to see if I could better my times eachyear. My longest race is a half-Ironman,which I did in Wailea.”

Would he ever do an Ironman? “It’s awish, but not a realistic goal at this time.I have a wife and kids. I don’t have threehours a day to train. But maybe one day.”

Recently, Ako became more competi-tive about the triathlons he does enter.“In 2003 I decided I wanted to be thebest in my age group, so I really gotstrict with training. It paid off. I won myage group in the Tinman, and placed inthe Top Three in the Ko‘olina SprintTriathlon.” Unfortunately for him, thecartilage in his right kneecap wore thin,and he hasn’t been able to train fortriathlons since.

Ako misses triathlons, but he has ahost of other disciplines to choose from.He works at a place that offers 85 groupexercise classes a week, private sportslessons from club pros, Pilates, danceclasses, aquatic programs, racquetball,squash, tennis, martial arts, boxing,fencing, and even post-workout ameni-ties like a physical therapy program byJACO and massage therapy.

It’s no wonder Ako easily maintains atrim 145 pounds on his five-foot-nine-inch frame. He has less than ten percentbody fat, which is evident even throughhis clothes. “I have trouble gainingweight. I take protein powders. I eatwhatever I want in moderation. I lovesweets. Ice cream is my weakness. I liketo eat, and I love to taste new foods,”expresses Ako. It’s reached a point in theinterview where the writer reaches overto assault the subject.

“I wish we all had that problem,” laughsTsuda, with a little envy and a lot of admi-ration. “I’ve put on 25 pounds, anotherfriend our age has put on 15 pounds. He’sbeen the same for the last 20 years!”

Hawk enthuses, “Mike does a great jobof walking the talk as far as fitness cen-ter GMs go. He really stays in goodshape. You can find him on the fitnessfloor frequently. I think that helps himunderstand the needs of the membersbetter. It also puts him in the thick ofthings and members feel free to come upand chat anytime—he’s ‘one of us.’”

If Ako is indeed just “one of us”—he’sset the bar pretty high.
