LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Niccolò Rigon, that's a goodquestion! It's really all about practice. The more you are exposed toEnglish, the easier it will become to stop. First of all make a consciouseffort to avoid translation. When you are learning new vocabulary orgrammar use only English for the notes, the explanations andexamples. When you're trying to work something out, do it in English.As you walk around during the day, think about the things you aredoing, and in your head use English even sing English songs! Andtry to listen to and read English every day, using a monolingualdictionary if necessary. not a bilingual one. LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Abeer, really bilingual dictionariesare not more helpful. They have their uses but there are many thingsabout them that are not helpful. Niccolo was complaining aboutalways thinking in Italian and translating to English. And if your firstreaction every time you meet a new word is to translate it then that isnot going to improve! And besides, many bilingual dictionaries havemuch less information about the words, and simply offer a translation,maybe a few different alternatives. This can mislead you and causeyou to choose the wrong translation, or to use the word incorrectly in asentence. A good monolingual dictionary will give you informationabout the word, its pronunciation, example sentences and phrases,details of other words that go together with it such as prepositions oradjectives and much, much more. By learning and thinking about theword, its definition and use all in English, you're helping yourself tothink in English. After you've done that, I often recommend students totranslate the word or phrase for themselves THEN use a bilingualdictionary to check they were right. LearnEnglish – British Council Hi Mahmoud Alaa, yes that's a bit of aproblem. It's only natural when subtitles are there you're going to readthem. I recommend that you turn them off and try to listen a couple oftimes without them, try to understand the main points and don't worry ifyou don't understand every word. Then you can watch again withsubtitles to check. The videos are very short, so it won't take long but itwill really help you improve! LearnEnglish – British Council Hi EsrÃǻ SĦǻlǻbi, everyone takes thesame test for the academic module, but the results that universities askfor may be different, depending on whether you are applying forundergraduate or postgraduate courses and of course depending onwhat you are studying. A pass at CAE is approximately equivalent to 6.5 atIELTS, so if you are at the top end of the CAE score then you would bearound 7.5. They are very different tests though, especially in writing,so make sure you follow all of our course so you know exactly what toexpect.
