  • Epiphany: Called to pay Homage The First Reading is a foretelling of the deliverance of Israel and the worship of their God by Gentile peoples, all nations. God will fulfill His promises to them (made in Second Isai-ah). God’s glory will so shine on His chosen people that foreigners from all over will come in pilgrimage to Jerusa-lem to pay homage to the Lord. This promise is fulfilled in the arrival of the Magi. ● The Responsorial, Psalm 72, de-scribes the perfect king of Israel, someone as wise as Solo-mon, one who secures justice for all, especially the poor; a great warrior to enlarge Israel’s boundaries. Realizing no king could fulfill these high expectations, the prophets spoke of a future king, unlike any other in Israel. The arrival of the Magi to pay homage to the Baby Jesus, the Messiah, is the fulfill-ment of this prophecy and the inau-guration of God’s reign. In the Ma-gi, the recognition of the splendor and majesty of the newborn King of Kings and the homage paid Him by all nations on earth begins. ● In the Second Reading, we see the bounty of God’s love extends to all peoples. this is the mystery of salvation. The New Covenant is one in which all peoples will participate in God’s grace, for all are chosen by Him, without distinction. All are part of the mystical body of Christ. ● The Gospel continues the theme of this Sunday’s readings, the feast of Our Lord’s Epiphany. Epiphany means manifestation, for we commemorate the day the glo-ry of God’s Messiah was made manifest to the pagans, (all peoples) in the personage of the Magi. Even though the murderous King Herod (whose paranoia about rivals to his throne caused him to murder a wife, three sons and a high priest brother-in-law) sought to destroy the Messiah, God’s protection of His Son’s mission prevailed. The Magi brought three gifts: gold, a gift one gives to a king, frankin-cense, what is burned to honor a god, and myrrh, an oint-ment used in burials. These gifts indicate not only the roy-alty and divinity of Jesus, but also how He would save us; our God and King dies for us on the cross.

Prayer of the Week Father of light, unchanging God, today you reveal to people of faith the re-splendent fact of the Word made flesh.

Your light is strong, your love is near; draw us beyond the limits which this world imposes, to the life where your Spirit makes all life complete. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Attend Mass Virtually! Even though there is no public Mass at Sacred Heart, you can still attend Sunday Mass virtually online, either by watching the Mass streamed on the parish website or on

YouTube. Many people watch on Sunday morning and then go to the church to receive Holy Commun-ion (as long as they arrive before 10:30 am). This is different from when we could attend together as a parish family, but the normality of Sunday Mass, prayers, and Holy Communion is to be treasured in this abnormal time.

Receiving Holy Communion Mindful that Communion is the sustenance of our souls, you may receive Holy Communion in the church vestibule M-F between 8:00 am to 9:00 am, Sat. 9:00 am to 10:00 am, and Sun. 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Please act in a reveren-tial manner as you are in the presence of God. Do not con-gregate in the vestibule, but either enter the church to pray or leave the church altogether. Thank you for your cooper-ation.

Private Prayer in Church Even though Mass cannot be offered at Sacred Heart during this current phase of the pandemic lockdown, Sacred Heart is open daily for an hour for private prayer. M-F between 8:00 am -9:00 am; Sat. 9:00 am -10:00 am & 4:00 pm -5:00 pm; and Sun. 9:00 am-10:30 am you are welcome to enter and pray quietly, bearing in mind there should be no more than 10 people at any given time in the church.

    Please Pray for the Sick

Advent Giving Tree Thank you for making our Sacred Heart Parish Giving Tree a success. Our com-munity has brightened the holidays for dozens of local men, women, and chil-dren. The recipients of your generous gifts are deeply grate-ful.

Return to School Parents of Sacred Heart schoolchildren are reminded to keep an eye out for communications from the Diocese and the school concerning the procedures to return after the Christ-mas break. Some families will be asked to quarantine if they have been exposed to others by traveling. Antigen testing may also be available to our school-children. Details will be in the communications.

Pietà Chapel Update A mid-project report: the chapel has been returned to its original footprint and ceiling height by removing two interior walls and the false ceiling; a new interior marble floor has been installed; the Pieta statue has been relocated to the south wall; tile has been laid down on the exterior concrete landing and steps; wrought iron fencing/gate has been put in place. The new wall paneling is being fabricated. As soon as the panel-ing, decorative trim, and new ex-terior emergency door with side panels are installed, then the ceil-ing will be painted. Soon the chapel will be open for parishion-ers to once again enjoy this special place for private prayer and reflection. ● The entire Pieta Chapel project, as well as new exterior lighting, and anti-graffiti sealant have been funded, not by the ordinary offertory donations, but from the Parish Building Fund. ● Thank you to all who have do-nated to the Building Fund to make these projects possible.

Holy Communion for Those Staying at Home If you, a family member, or friend have chosen to stay at home during the pandemic and would like to receive Holy Communion, please call the Parish Office (916-452-4136 ext. 2). We will try our best to have Holy Communion brought to you. Perhaps a family member or friend would be willing to come by the church to be given Holy Communion for you.

Priesthood Discernment Retreat Are you being called by God to discern your vocation to the priesthood? The diocesan Office of Vocations invites you to contact them to pursue this question. Who can attend this retreat? Young men age 21 or older who are strongly consid-ering the priesthood with a recommendation from their pas-tor. When and where will the retreat take place? The retreat is scheduled for January 15-17, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Semi-nary in Menlo Park, south of San Francisco. How can I reg-ister? You can contact the Vocations Office for more infor-mation at 916-733-0258 or send an email to [email protected] .

Email Addresses The parish is compiling a list of email addresses of everyone in the parish (if you have one). Use of email for routine communications will save us quite a lot

of money in postage. Please email your address to [email protected].

Support for Advertisers and Local Businesses During this pandemic, many small businesses in our neigh-borhood have been struggling due to loss of patronage. Some of these businesses advertise in our bulletin, others are nearby shops that are used to serving our parishioners. If you

are financially able, please sup-port these neighborhood estab-lishments at this critical time for them. ● We thank and appreciate the businesses who advertise in our bulletin.

Altar Society News Our thanks to Josette Borland and her family for hanging the Christ-mas wreaths and garlands in front of the church and for displaying the Nativity for all to enjoy when they enter the church for private prayer. The colorful poinsettias which also adorn the sanctuary were provided by the Altar Socie-ty. We extend our wishes for a Blessed Christmas season to all parishioners.

    Catholic Faith Formation (CFF) Program

The Parish’s Catholic Faith For-mation Program for children at-

tending a non-Catholic school resumes, following Christmas break, on Tuesday, January 5 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Classes meet via Zoom every other Tuesday and children attend classes according to their grade and level of prepared-ness. ● If you have any questions or would like information on the program, please contact Tila Madrigal, CFF Coordi-nator, at 916-947-2683 or email [email protected]

Thank You to our Christmas Workers On December 15, Sacred Heart Parish donated 273 bags of food for Cristo Rey High School families, and for the St. Vincent de Paul food closet. This collection was spectacular but would not have been possible without the tireless work of Emilia Jankowski and her helpers. Emilia, assisted by Dona Zilaff, spent hours gathering the food, checking it for expired dates, bagging it up, and arranging delivery. ● Like-wise, Sharon Rich deserves our gratitude for the work she did on the Advent Giving Tree. The pandemic did not stop Sharon from being able to deliver gifts to those in need. Thank you to all who donated to these causes, and especial thanks to Emilia and Sharon.

    An Epiphany Prayer

Lord Jesus, receiver of the wise men and their gifts, help us to follow the light in the midst of our dark world. Fix our eyes and hearts on your light, that we might be bear-ers of that light to all those who walk in the dark. Amen.

    In Our Prayers

    Bless This House

A traditional way of blessing your home for Epiphany is to use chalk to write above the home’s entrance:

    20 + C + M + B + 21

The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Batlthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus man-sionem benedicat, meaning “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and 20...21 is the current year. Let us pray. ● Lord God almighty, bless this home, and under its shelter let there be health, chastity, self-control, humility, goodness, mildness, obedience to your commandments, and thanksgiving to you. May your blessing remain always in this home and on those who live here. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
