On The Cover Hi Angelina,This photo of a Giant Swallowtail Butterfly wastaken on July 26, 2012, in East Otis. The but-terfly caught my eye because it was so large.

According to the Butterflies of Massachusettswebsite (www.butterfliesofmassachusetts.net/giant-swt.htm), the Giant Swallowtail typicallyhas a wingspread of four to five inches. Itremains rare in the New England states, butmay be expected to increase with climatewarming.Kristin Coffey, East Otis, MA

The Big IdeaBy Jeff Lenard, National Association of Convenience Stores

This October, some of the biggest companies inthe world will be visiting East Otis to see theinnovative concepts at Papas Healthy Food &

Fuels.Dont worry about traffic jams on Route 23;Papas will be featured in a video tour of 12innovative retailers conducted by the NationalAssociation of Convenience Stores (NACS).

This October, 23,000 attendees from theconvenience store industry will gather in Las Vegasat the associations NACS Show to see and hear what is new and innovative in the $681 billionconvenience store business. Think about thatnumber for a minute those sales mean that one of every 22 dollars in the country is spent at aconvenience store. Retailers attend the three-dayevent to find new ideas for how they can stand outfrom the competition.

A highlight of the meeting is the annual Ideas2 Go general session, a fast -paced video tour of innovative and unique convenience retail operatorsfrom around the country and sometimes theworld. The program shares retailing best practicesby retailers for retailers, which is extremely uniqueto the convenience store industry. After all, howmany other retail channels invite other retailers intotheir businesses and share their best ideas?

Its no easy task to select a mere dozen storesto profile out of the 148,000-plus stores across thecountry, but Papas certainly was worth the trip. Our film crew visited Papas in June to talk toowner Larry Southard about some of the uniqueelements of the store.

The joke around here is that we have anidentity crisisI would describe us as a generalstore; a healthy version of a general store with adeli, Larry told us.

But we saw that the store is much more thanthat. Papas really is three businesses in onelocation: a traditional grocery, an organic groceryand an automotive shop/dealer. But what each

business has in common is a focus on thecommunity. You could see that on the day wevisited, with the famers market in full swing. Inaddition to booths featuring local produce and

products, Larry also manned the grill, offering up

some tasty treats. And, it was clear that some of thefresh produce on sale in the market also was on saleinside the store.

In some respects, Papas is like most of theconvenience store business. It is a single-storeoperation, like about 63 percent of the stores in the

country. What makes Papas unique is theexecution. It wasnt just during the weekly farmersmarket, but what they did every day to createcustomer loyalty.

Heres one simple way: pictures of customers pets prominently displayed in the store. Larry said itwas a simple idea that just blossomed, and howdozens of dogs (and other creatures) have their

pictures on display at the store. What attendees most will notice about Papas

is how this store exemplifies the convenience storeindustrys future, and its right there in the name:Papas Healthy Food and Fuels. Papas delivers onthat promise of its name with a truly impressivearray of products that fits the bill. And will be justone of the many interesting ideas that retailers willnote in a session where attendees furiously scribbledown ideas to consider for their stores.

This years Ideas 2 Go video program also willfeature other stores emerging concepts that areredefining convenience, whether through alternativefuels, new loyalty and payment programs or redefining what stores sell. In addition toworkshops and sessions, the NACS Show willfeatures a 387,000-plus net-square-foot expositionfloor with 1,333 exhibiting companies, representingsome of the worlds largest companies.

Come to think of it, maybe there will be anincrease in traffic on Route 23, but it wont be tillafter October, when show attendees want to see first-hand how Papas Healthy Foods & Fuel makes itall work.

Chiefs Corner To the sadness of children and to the relief of some

parents, summer has flown by quickly once again. (TheStaples commercial with the Most Wonderful time of the

Year comes to mind.) It is back to school time. Pleasepay attention to children being picked up and dropped off by school buses, as that is how themajority of our children get to school. In Massachusetts, vehicles are required to stop for a schoolbus with its red flashing lights on. If it is a non-divided highway (which would be all of ours inOtis), both lanes of traffic are required to stop.

Another event that fall brings is the foliage season. People from all over come out for their Sunday drives, which have also expanded into Fridays and Saturdays. We are thankful to havethese visitors, but we also need to be mindful of things like the last minute, no blinker turns that Ihave seen happen, perhaps because they just saw something that they need to take a picture of,or maybe because they just realized that they should have turned there. I would also like toremind people to be aware of are motorcycles. Since bikers also like to take in foliage, there is

always an increase in their numbers. Lets all try and be cautious and courteous to both of thesesituations.Lastly, I would like to point out that hunting season is right around the corner. During this time

of year, I typically process a large number of firearms licenses. People frequently ask me howlong before their current permit expires should they come in to process a renewal. The licensingprocedure generally takes 4-6 weeks, so it would be a good idea to call for an appointment about2 months ahead of time. Appointments are done on Wednesday evenings. If your appointmentis a license renewal, you will need to bring your old firearms license, a drivers license, and the$100 fee (checks payable to the Town of Otis.) THE BIG POND CANOE KAYAK POKER RACE A much anticipated event on Big Pond is the annual Canoe

Kayak Poker Race sponsored by the Big Pond Association. Tenstations are on various docks as shown on the map. Self propelledboats: canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, row boats and paddle boatsstop at as many stations as possible; most stop at all. Participants

included all ages, even some babies and a dog named Bailey. Theweather was perfect. The participants draw a card from a poker deck at each station

and that card is recorded on their registration card. The race runsfrom noon until 4:30pm. The annual potluck supper at thebeautiful Magovern waterfront starts at 5:30pm. After a wonderful

supper attended by well over 150 people, prizes are given tothose with the best poker hands. Note: all children whoparticipated received a prize.I manned station #6 at the start of the Creek. I was assisted

by my granddaughter Chloe who graciously welcomed eachparticipant with a smile and an offer of cookies. Moststations offer refreshments to keep the participants going. We were constantly busy at our station and handed out 142poker cards. The photo shows Chloe greeting a paddle board,a kayak and a canoe. Across the bay is Don Goss station #5with more boats coming and going. Thanks to the efforts of many, a truly grand day on Big Pond.

"Miley's Cat Chat" by Linda Bardsley, East Otis, MA

Hi, everyone. Well, as I write this, it isaround the second week of August; sothere is still quite a bit of summer left. It is

passing rather quickly. I am very adjustedto life up here now and am learning myboundaries....and so are the little crittersthat I so love to chase around ( and bringhome on occasion ) The "folks" call ithunting...I call it "thinning the herd". One day, as the folks sat out back, with

company, I came strutting up the walk with a chipmunk in my mouth. That is when I learned thatchipmunks "play possum". As I dropped it on the ground next to Mom and Pops (and their appalledguests), it quickly came to life and bolted into the rock wall. Both me and the chipmunk were inshock. Now one would think that I would have learned a lesson then, but no, not me.

One morning, a few weeks later, Pops had let me out when he got up. He left the porch door ajar so that I could get in and out, at will, while he made coffee and got ready for the day. That mightsound like a great idea; but guess he didn't think so when I brought in a live chipmunk and droppedit on the porch floor. The whole cottage went into a complete "lockdown" and I was immediatelyremoved from the "scene of the crime". He spent some time hiding behind a bookcase (oddly, theone with animal books in it) At one point, the little guy was standing on his hind legs and staringout the window....think he thought it was over. But, Pops managed to guide it out the door tosafety. Now, in my defense, I do want to clarify something. I never catch something just to kill it or hurt it, at all. I only want to toss it around and play with it for a while. I think of myself like Lennie in"Of Mice and Men"....(occasionally I do read the classics) I merely wanted to play and pet the softlittle critters...I'm just a little too rough. No oneseems very concerned when I capture a volethough. Voles are weird looking mouse-likecreatures, with, what looks like, a miniature toiletplunger for a nose. Haven't figured out their realpurpose, so, until then, it's open season on'em. Well, hopefully, I haven't lost any of my fans, due to my nasty habits, but do try and remember, everyone is for "animal rights" and I am ananimal....therefore, I have rights! Have a great restof the summer and I will try to do another updatenext month, which will be the end of my summer vacation in Otis and back to being an indoor, urban cat again. Til then....Meow Miley

    NEWS FROM THE

OTIS COMMUNITY GARDENBy Blake Degen, Otis, MA

The yield has been in full force, with tomatoes, green beans, cabbage, chard, kale, broccoli, collardgreens, lettuces, carrots, beets, herbs, and muchmore. We are delighted at thegenerous harvest this summer.Cooking vegetables fresh from thegarden is best done simply to enjoythe full flavor of earths bounty. This concept is well communicatedin a poem entitled Soul Food byour own Taylor Stoehr:

This year the weather was perfectfor spinach, I ate double portionsnight after night, so delicious.

Now Ive turned to beet greens, reward after thinning the cropso as to eat nice fat beetslater in the season. As good asspinach, though a bit more troubletrimming red stems off green leaves.

Ready and waiting in the next rowstands the chard, a varietymarketed as Bright Lights, colorful to see though on the plate

it reverts to green, tasting of beetand tender as spinach. SometimesI add a few leaves of arugula

but lemon and butter are enough.Same with turnip greens, young and mild, along with their lovely purple globes.

Next in line and waxing grander every day are kale and collards, the great heavy leaves spreadingluxuriant to the sun,

and crowding out witch-grassand other opportunistic weeds.Ill try a bit of bacon dripping instead of salt pork with the collards

but stick to olive oil for kale. All of it soul-food, good for the soul, and harvesting is soul-work.

people think that means they have to do lots of ab crunches it DOESNT. Too many abcrunches can strain your iliopsoas muscle, which then throws your pelvic area out of alignment. I know thats not what yourelooking for!

The ideal way to strengthen your core isthrough a series of exercises that strengthenall of the muscles surrounding your spine. Here are my top two:

Forearm Plank strengthens all of your coremuscles and takes only a minute, so you caneasily fit it into your busy schedule.

Begin face down on the floor, elbows under your shoulders, keeping the forearms andhands flat on the floor, about shoulder widthapart, forearms parallel with the body.

Next, curl your toes and lift your body into aplank position, but instead of having your weight on your hands as in a pushup, you arebalancing on your forearms, this makes it alittle more difficult and, believe me, youll feel itin your abs.

How To Improve Your Golf Game

By Kathi Casey, ERYT, CPI The Healthy Boomer Body Expert

As I drove past the golf course

in Lee the other day I foundmyself wondering how thegreenest grass in town is alwayson the course and WOW! Is it

green! With the dry weather weve had thissummer, the houses all around cant compare, but those greens on the course were likelovely little Emerald Isles!

I know that all of you golfers out there arewell into the swing of your favorite season,

And this month, the pressure is on for all the

competitions and championships, so Id like togive you some exercises that will insure thatyou have your best season yet, without strainor injury!

Golf is an asymmetrical sport, so the bestway to prevent injury is to keep your corestrong, and then swing from your core. Many

Hold this position for several seconds, thenrest for a breath or two, and repeat. Work upto holding for at least ten seconds, repeatingtwice.

Note - Make sure that your lower back is

not arched toward the floor. If you tend to dothat, simply raise your hips slightly toward theceiling to protect your lower back.

Pilates Swimming is another fabulousexercise for strengthening both your upper and lower back. This exercise also loosensyour hip and shoulder joints, which isimportant for golfers.

Begin lying on your stomach with your armsextended straight past your head (Super Manstyle!) and your legs about hip width apart.Keep your head centered dont move fromside to side.

Inhale as you lift and stretch your right armand left leg. Exhale and lower. Then inhaleand lift your left arm and right leg. Exhale andlower. Repeat five or six times.

Note - Keep your arms and legs straight

(Continued from page 26) and your spine long throughout this exercise. It is a stretch, not a leg lift. If you feel anytension in your lower back, tighten your buttocks and that will remove the tension.

Pilates exercises are great for golfers

Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, and CamiloVillegas all say that Pilates has improved their golf game. This is because Pilates is designedto strengthen your core. Once your core isstrong and you learn how to move your bodyproperly and use your core strength to drivethe ball, the results will speak for themselves. Many of my students have not only improvedtheir strength, but have also shaved 3 5strokes off the golf score! Bet that would getyour attention

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm inthe Town Hall Conference room. It wasannounced the meeting was being recorded.

Present: Chair Roberta Sarnacki, DonHawley, Brian Crandall, Chris Morris, Peter Kolodziej, Jim Crandall, Jim Wilusz, CharlieHarner, Arlene Tolopko, Chris Pompi, Rob Akroyd,Robin Peterson, Lenny Terranova, Bruce Wall,Shaun Tucker, Gary & Kristen OBrien

Approval of Minutes: The July 10, 2012 SelectBoard meeting minutes were unanimouslyapproved.

Peter Kolodziej: 1401 East Otis Road: Lettershad been sent to find out what went wrong. Nopermits were pulled for the job, a seasonal tighttank was installed when the plans called for a jetbat system, and no certification of compliance canbe issued until this matter is resolved. ShaunTucker stated he had an installers permit for 2011when the job was started, and due to the weather the job was not completed until 2012 and he wasworking for Gary OBrien at the time. Jim andPeter noted that the variances for the install hadbeen previously approved, but the install had beendone without a license or signature. Shaunadmitted it was his fault. The Board of Health hasrequested that Shaun get his permits from thetown for 2011 and 2012, a final acceptance letter from the engineer, and signoff from all partiesresponsible.

83 Pine Grove Ridge: They needan emergency well permit as the basement wellhas gone dry and they currently have no water.Peter determined that the Board of Health has novariances that need to be approved by them so

they are ready to move forward with permissionfrom the Conservation Commission due to the newwell being within 100 feet of Otis Reservoir. The

Board of Health noted the homeowners would liketo keep the basement well in operation after thenew well is drilled and noted that water from thebasement well should not be used for drinkingwater in the future because it can easily becomecontaminated from lack of use. Conservation hasalready been notified of this and believes it to bean emergency. The Select Board is okay withmoving forward with permission fromConservation.

Election Workers: The Select Boardunanimously approved adding Elaine Thomas to

Lyns list of election workers. Recreation Commission: Lisa noted that therehad been a mix up with reserving the Gymnasiumfor the July Zumba classes on Monday night. Shestated it was not her intent to cancel a class thatwas well attended as the Town Hall belongs to theresidents. But she did ask that anyone makingroom reservations at the Town Hall to please workclosely with her and verify the reservations madeso we can minimize any conflicts from happeningin the future. The board asked Chris to issue areminder to department heads and Lisa will add

the July Zumba classes to the calendar.Regarding the water bottle invoice, the boardnoted this did seem to be excessive and Recneeds to be more specific on what is included intheir line item budgets.

Police: Roberta recused herself from votingand then presented discussion about putting thePolice Chief on a three year contract or

appointment. That position is currently a one year appointment. Roberta feels the Chief positionwould become less political if not subject to annualreappointment noting that one of the twoselectmen who vote on her appointment maychange every year. It was noted that both the

Police Chief and the Fire Chief cannot be removedwithout a one year notice being given, unless theyhave a contract. Lenny Terranova noted that afive member Select Board could help alleviate thepolitics. Don Hawley noted that the previousPolice Chief was thrown under the bus in a singlemeeting. He also suggested that in the futureperhaps a panel or committee should be formed toadvise the board whether someone should or should not be dismissed. Brian suggested a fivemember Select Board may work for discussingproblems and not making decisions without

violating the Open Meeting Laws. Don said theadvisory panel would do the same thing and beeasier to implement. Roberta stated that in her case she felt a three year contract help her tomake decisions both as chief and selectman withless concern for political retaliation. Chris Morrisnoted a contract would offer more protection and

WWTP: Jim and Chris Morris both felt anyremaining topics had already been discussedduring the WWTP meeting.

Classification/Compensation Plan: Chris Morrisnoted all the job descriptions were done and theyare currently going through the revisions. DonJacobs will discuss the classification schedule withChris Morris next week. The polished schedulewith salary comparisons should be ready topresent to the board for the August 28, 2012meeting.

Other: Arlene regarding Joans Trees: Arlene

reiterated that money had been put away toreplace the driveway trees. She also noted that

the bench that was to be commissioned for HayesPond may instead be placed at Town Hall with thetrees to be planted there in Joans memory. KenPackie is looking to make a 10 to 12 foot benchwith barrel planters at each end. Jim Crandallnoted that the benches in Firehouse Park are

beginning to show signs of wear, so we either need to get some of the finish Ken uses on hisbenches so the town can maintain them, or weneed to hire Ken to refinish his benches. Placingthe bench at the Town Hall was okay with Donand Roberta and they said the actual site should

be worked out with Jim and Larry.Cemetery: Lenny Terranova and Bruce

Wall noted that the new section of the cemeteryhas no map for it and someone wants to buy acemetery plot. Lenny suggested we get aprofessional to come in and map out thecemetery. It is now mandatory that thecornerstones be purchased at the same time thelot is purchased because the lots are measured off the cornerstones. But there was a time when itwas not mandatory so Lenny and Bruce will needto review the deed book to verify what has already

been sold. Lenny agreed to get the informationfrom Jim about the person wanting to purchase aplot and Lenny will contact that person. Brucestated we need to know exactly what we plan tomap out at the cemetery so we can state proper requirements and get that out for bid. Lenny andDon Hawley thought wed probably have to do the

(Continued from page 29) new section as well as the section that is not yetfull. Don Hawley agreed we need to get thecemetery laid out. Lenny and Bruce will look intohiring a surveyor to draft a comprehensive map of the cemetery.

Contract Renewals: The Library contractwas signed by the board. There was discussion

as to whether we were getting the quarterlystatements from the Rescue Squad. It wasdecided wed ask Richie Phair or hisrepresentative at an All Boards meeting.

Annual Sewer Commitment Letter: Thiswas signed by the board so Ann could have it bynext week.

Gary & Kristen OBrien: They apologizedfor the confusion about 1401 East Otis Road. They needed okay from the Select Board to applyfor an annual Pump & Haul permit. The Boardsaid to see Heather in the Selectmens office to

Dear Angelina, As a mother of small children, I sometimes find myself

reading our Sunday paper in a quiet little nook of our home just to get ten minutes of peaceful reading. In with mySunday paper is, of course, a copy of last weeks OtisGazette. Im always a week behind in my reading.

I can smell the hazelnut coffee my husband is brewingfor me. He makes it just the way I like it. And every time hebrings me my coffee, I know the kids will be a few footstepsbehind him and soon they will find my once quiet nook that Iso much enjoyed for those ten minutes. No, my husbanddoes not cater to me since every Saturday Im the onemaking his coffee just the way he likes it. At this point theonly paper I read thus far was the Otis Gazette and inthose ten quiet minutes, I found myself again reminiscingabout so many childhood memories of Otis and being there

on Sundays with my parents and brother and my aunt uncleand their three children (my cousins). It was the best timesof my childhood and we five kids loved being there. Our family had a sailboat and they had a powerboat. And we all just loved being together and we all got along great. Wewould find a new adventure every weekend. We all certainlyenjoyed following the little minnows by the shoreline. Weenjoyed searching for catfish and crawfish nearby. We

watched the cat-tails sway in the light breeze near the wateedge where we would go swimming and have our lunch.

We looked forward to our routine Sunday. Kids lohaving a routine and I see that too in my own children well. We too have a sailboat now and we actually keepslipped at the exact location we did years ago. Now thbrings back some memories! I now find myself telling kids to walk in the middle of the docks to get their balanand not to run. Now a these days, I often wonder if mparents get tired just from thinking about all the work theyback then to get us ready, pack the car, pack some waterssnacks, lunch, hats, bandaids, swimsuits, towels, lotiosunglasses, binoculars, compass, bring the fishing polenet, worms and try not to forget anything. How did tmanage? Do they think now, well, now well let our daughteworry and think about those things. I chuckle sometimabout what they think and what they see in me as a monow. Perhaps they are the ones chuckling. Perhaps I amthe one saying if its not here, we really didnt need itanyway. I am appreciating my parents more and more forwhat they did for us. Thanks for the memories mom adad!

Kops and Kids and Kayaks By Roberta Sarnacki, Chief of Police, Otis, MA

On Tuesday, August 7 th, the Otis Police Departmentsponsored a program for children at the Town Beach onBig Pond. Kids from four different towns signed up andwere able to go kayaking on a beautiful summer morning. For some kids like 6 year old Melanie and 8year old Nick, it was their first time. Others like Haley,Kelly, Lizzy, Maggy, Marissa, Isaac and Bei Jia, hadkayaked previously. Counselors included myself, Sgt.Dan Hamill, Police Department intern Calyn Duffany, and Michaela Lawlor. In addition to this same crew,Officer Ryan Kresiak and Officer Stephanie Fredsallwill assist at our next session.

I would like to give special thanks to Michaela. Notonly did she volunteer to serve as our tour guide (sinceshe was the one most familiar with the geography of Big Pond), but she also happened to have an extracamera card, which she lent me when I realized thatmine was still in my computer at home!

Several years ago, former Chief of Police CharlesHarner had acquired some kayaks for the departmentusing funds from a community policing grant. I believethat it was his intention to use these for a program likethis one. Since this first program was such a success,

we will be runninganother one onAugust 22 nd, and

    possibly even onemore in September.

This program isan extension of our

Kops and Kidscamp in April. Thegoal of the Kopsand Kids program isto provide fun andsa fe ac t iv i t i e sduring vacation

periods for kids ages 5-12. Another big goal of the program is teamwork, and we also want to help childrenfeel comfortable around police officers.

The program also includes lessons on kayaking andwater safety, as well as team building games and

activities. Kids also eat lunch and do a craft while theyare there. Thanks again to everyone who goes out of their way to assist with this great program.

We have a very large number of children signed upfor our session on August 22 nd, so please be sure towatch the Otis Police Department Facebook page for information on any possible dates in September!

Surprise Moments at Rock Ledge Farm Howdy,

My name is Surprise. And I am the most gorgeoushorse at Rock Ledge Farm in Otis, MA. Im magnificentand sometimes people say Im special needs. Im guessingits good because of the special. You should stop by andsee me some time. Ok, back to what Im going to tell you,

you cant tell anyone, especially any cats. Ok, here I go. I was looking at myself in the water

where I saw my reflection. While I was at lookingmyself, I caught a glimpse of something in the house. Then I looked closer and Joey the bird was beingattacked by the Fat Cat Gang. So heres the part that

you cant tell anyone ok. I heard from Mike who heardfrom Misty who heard from Dusty who was listening tosome birds talking and they said, Joey was in debt to thefat cat gang and if he didnt have what they wanted bythe end of the month, well short story short, hell besorry!! So as I saw the fight go down, wing hitting, clawslashing then just in time a few kids told Tonia the

camp counselor right then he would have been sorry! Tonia came in and Joey left with her gladly. He was outside not knowing whether to

stay or fly away. He was traumatized. Knowing he was about to die! It looked like hethought it over and he flew away. Never heard what happened to him. Im guessing he hasa wife and eggs.

Well remember this istop secret!!! No tellinganyone soShhhhh

Your very own beautiful, gorgeous, splendid, fantasticSurprise.

(Now I know you know that horses cant write or type, so I have to give a little credit to the terrific little lady, Katie Brake, Counselor in Training here at Rock Ledge Farm for getting this on paper to bring to you.)
