Dear THPS Community, Taylors Hill Primary School is always buzzing with the excitement of learning and special events, and Term 3 is jam packed full of events to reinforce and enhance our learning program. In the next few weeks we have our Family Science Night (15/8 at 6:00pm), Book Week with the Book Character Dress Up Day (23/8 at 9:15am), Literacy and Numeracy Week and the district Athletics Competition for our senior students. Please keep a close eye on the whole school and class newsletters, as well as the website, Facebook and Compass for all the details about special events at school. CAMP QUALITY This week, we were lucky enough to have the Camp Quality - Primary School Education Program visit our school. The aim of the show was to help us create a supportive community for children affected by cancer. The Camp Quality Puppets provided a fun but interactive and engaging way to dispel common myths and misconceptions about cancer in an age appropriate way. Our students learnt that you can’t catch cancer and that there are side-effects to the treatment that make cancer patients very sick. Importantly, they learnt that cancer patients need friends and identified fun activities we do to make ourselves feel better, like singing, dancing, reading, riding bikes, playing a game, eating our favourite food, etc. A major theme throughout the show was that everyone has a ‘super power’, we just have to find ours. This message is powerful and one that we need to encourage in our students. We want all students to recognise what makes them special and celebrate this in a positive way. We encourage you to talk to your child and identify what their super power is. Some examples could be: • The ability to make others laugh • Being organized and keeping their bedroom tidy • Giving the best hugs • Using fabulous manners • Being a super-fast runner • Reading with great expression There are no boundaries to what someone’s superpower could be. You could also share what yours is! If you would like more information about the show, or need further support in how to talk about cancer with children, please go to the Camp Quality Website www.campquality.org.au and/or download the ‘Kids Guide To Cancer’ App. PFA AFTERNOON TEA – Friday 25th August at 2:40pm Building ‘Positive Relationships’ is one of our school values and extends across our students, staff and parent community. A great way to establish and maintain relationships with other parents is to take part in school events. The PFA have organized an Afternoon Tea and Second Hand Uniform Sale at the school on Friday, 25th August at 2:40pm. All parents and extended family members are invited to have a drink and a snack before school pick-up and enjoy the afternoon chatting to others. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Thank you and have a great two weeks, Danielle Stella

The Flu (Influenza) Dear Parents, We have had a reported case of Influenza A at THPS and so it is timely to educate ourselves about this virus and how we can minimize the spread of germs at our school.
What is influenza? Influenza, or the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. There are three main types of influenza virus that cause infection in humans - types A, B and C.
What are the symptoms? People with influenza typically experience some or all of the following symptoms:
• fever and chills
• cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose
• muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired)
• nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults). Some symptoms may last for more than a week.
How is it spread? Influenza viruses are mainly spread by droplets made when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Influenza can also be spread through touching surfaces where infected droplets have landed. People with influenza can be infectious from the day before their symptoms start. Adults are most infectious in the first 3-5 days of their illness, while children remain infectious for 7-10 days.
How is it prevented? We can take action to stop the spread of influenza by remembering to: Cover your face with a tissue or your arm when you cough or sneeze
and throw used tissues in a rubbish bin.
Wash your hands with soap thoroughly and often.
Wash hands for at least 10 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose,
or use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Stay at home until you're well.
Wait at least 24 hours after your fever resolves so you that you are unlikely to infect other
people. Keep sick children away from school and other activities.
Call ahead to see a doctor.
If you think you may have influenza and you need to see a doctor, call first so the clinic can
take precautions to reduce the risk to other people.
FIRST AID NOTIFICATIONS FOR PARENTS The First Aid Room is always a busy place at recess and lunch time and our First Aid officers do an amazing job at caring for our students. Some of our procedures are changing and so we would like to make you aware of what to expect.
Head Bumps: When your child has a bump to the head, it is school policy to make contact with parents, regardless of the severity of the injury. If your child has had a head injury of a serious nature, you will always receive a phone call. If your child comes to First Aid saying they have bumped their head, but there are no physical signs of injury and they are presenting well, treatment and TLC will be given and then an SMS will be sent to your phone informing you of the visit to the First Aid Room.
Asthma: If your child has asthma and they attend the First Aid Room for access to their Ventolin, an SMS will be sent to your phone informing you that their medication has been administered. This will not include students who independently use their Ventolin within the classroom setting. If their asthma symptoms become worse and further treatment is required, you will receive a phone call.
If you have any questions about First Aid procedures or medications at school, please contact Melissa Taylor on the school number.
FAMILY SCIENCE EVENING
The THPS Family Science Evening will be held on Tuesday, 15th August between 6:00pm - 7:30pm.
This is an evening of hands on science activities for students and their families to do together. The evening will represent many areas of science, including Physics, Earth and Space, Biology and Chemistry. The Family Science evening will be a terrific night and it should definitely NOT be missed! Please return the RSVP as soon as possible to book your place.
Learning Centre News! Wow! What an amazing response to this term’s Book Club. Students spent $3,265 on orders resulting in $653 worth of Rewards. These have already been spent along with points from the Book Fair in the following
areas:
Grade 6 Graduation
Literacy Circle Books
Classroom Library Books
Learning Centre – Library Books
Sporting Equipment
I am sure all students will enjoy these new resources.
Now, here is our problem and we need your help.
Mrs Baron and I have over 200 resources, catalogued and ready to go they just need to be covered and many more to come after these are done!
Thank you to the parents who already do an amazing job but we only have a couple of volunteers. This is a great way to assist the School especially if you are working parent or have pre-schoolers and it is difficult to help in the classroom. You would receive 10 books, instructions, adhesive covering (great quality – no bubbles), a squeegee. All you need is a good pair of
scissors and a little time. Please contact the Learning Centre if interested.
A big thank you to the Learning Centre Rovers
