TRANSCRIPT
June 19th–August 4thAges 5–11
This camp was carefully planned for our residents, both the parent and the child. It is flexible and inexpensive. You can register your child for a full day or a half day, one week or one day. Residents of Thornbury Township and non-residents are welcome.
Campers will enjoy outdoor games and sports, water fun day, music and song writing, and this year we are bringing back the kid’s favorites activities. We have a featured activity every day such as, Bricks4Kidz and Science Explorers. With the increasing costs of our activities we had to make a small increase to the cost of camp. A half day of camp is now $12.00 and a whole day is $24.00.
Camp dates are June 19th to August 4th. Childrens ages 5 to 11 are welcome. You will find all of the details on our website at www.thornbury.org or you can come into the township building and pick up a registration form. Our Camp Directors, Chris and Cindy McCord, are looking forward to another summer of fun and games with your children. Camp questions can be sent to [email protected].
THANK YOU, EAGLE SCOUTANTHONY AVELLA
Resident, Anthony Avella’s Eagle Scout
project honors veterans. Eighty-eight
of them to be exact! Anthony worked
with the Chester Co. Dept. of Veterans
Affairs and The American Legion. Avella
wanted his project to honor veterans so he
designed and built blocks of cement with
bronze markers that hold flags. They were
placed at the graves of veterans at Rolling
Green Cemetery in Westtown on Memorial
Day 2017.
Avella is a
member of
the Boy Scout
Troop 222, of
Westtown.
He also invited the
veteran’s family members
to participate in the
placing of the American
Flags on the graves.

Township Manager LetterHello fellow residents! We are looking forward to the many events planned for the summer months.
We started the season off with our Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Thornbury Park on Monday May 29th. Our guest speaker was Army Veteran, Mr. Ray Stankus. He delivered a moving speech that we posted on our website. I think everyone can appreciate Ray’s thoughts on Memorial Day.
We will once again run the Thornbury Township Summer Arts and Recreation Camp for children ages 5–11. We have again added some new activities to the camp. The cost of camp is $12.00 per half day for residents and $24.00 for a full day.
The Township is celebrating our 10th year of “Fourth Friday” events. For more details on all of the events please check our website at www.thornbury.org.
We are partnering with the Golf Course at Glen Mills for reduced rates for Township residents. Just call the Glen Mills Golf Course and reserve your tee time after 5:00pm on any Wednesday during the summer. In addition, the Board of Supervisors will provide tuition scholarships to the first ten residents that sign up for the Glen Mills Junior Golf Clinic. The clinic runs from July 10th–13th. For more details see page four of the newsletter or contact the golf course staff.
If golf is not your thing, perhaps you would like to join your neighbors at Thornbury Park on Mondays or Wednesdays to enjoy an hour of free Yoga from 7pm to 8pm.
Please consider joining us as we celebrate the summer of 2017. And don’t forget, we always welcome your new ideas on Township activities.
Jeff Seagraves, township manager
2017 Discount Ticket Sales Price List THANK YOU GIRL SCOUT TROOP #4734!
In April, under the leadership of Sherri Spitzer,
Girl Scout Troop #4734 worked very hard to
clean up Palmer Arboretum. They picked up
trash and piled up large limbs and sticks. They
pulled weeds and cleaned up leaves. Thank
you, ladies. We appreciate your hard work!
Keeping Thornbury Township beautiful is
important!
My fellow Supervisors and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some information and comments.
We have been very fortunate to have Joe Kephart and Danielle Berkowitz appointed as our fifth Junior Supervisors for the township! Both Joe and Danielle have done a fantastic job with all of their participation and have relayed all student activities very well. We wish Joe and Danielle the best as they move on to College in the fall. We will be continuing with this program next year and look forward to another Rustin Student(s) from the township joining our team.
We held our 11th annual local government day on April 21st. Vice Chair, JP Kelly, Supervisor, Sheri Perkins and I invited seniors from Rustin High School to learn about their government in a program called Local Government Day. We spoke to the students about our rolls in local government and how and why we got involved in serving on the Board. This year we had a little twist and made our way over to the high school. The goal is to educate the students and encourage them to get involved, volunteer, vote and attend their municipal meetings. They had the opportunity to meet several people working in various levels of government. Our guest speakers this year included Senator Tom Killion, State Representative Chris Quinn, District Attorney Jack Whelan, Chief of C.I.D. Joe Ryan, Forensic Analyst Michael Avella, and Pennsylvania State Policeman Tim Green. They all spoke about their positions, what their tasks include and how they affect the student lives. It was a day of learning and fun.
On May 17th we had the pleasure to invite the National Champion Rustin Hockey Team to our meeting. We presented them with a proclamation outling their successful season and how proud we are of them. With the school only open now for ten years, having won five state titles and this year adding the national title to its resume is very impressive. To the players, coaches, support staff and parents: Excellent job!
If you have any interest is serving on one of our boards or commissions please contact either myself, JP, Sheri, or a member of our staff, let us know what interests you may have and when positions become available we will let you know. Our Township is fortunate to have great volunteers, not only the ones who serve on the boards and commissions, but the ones who help out at all of our events. Join our family of volunteers; it will be a rewarding experience. In closing, have a great summer, and we will see you around town!

• Choose a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or
higher. A sunscreen with SPF 30 blocks 97
percent of the sun’s UVB rays.
• Look for the words “broad spectrum.”
This means the sunscreen protects against
both UVA rays (which cause premature skin
aging) and UVB rays (which cause sunburn).
Both types of UV rays can lead to skin
cancer.
• Look for the words “water resistant.” They
provide protection for wet or sweaty skin
for 40 or 80 minutes. All sunscreens should
be reapplied every two hours, or after
swimming or sweating.
• For sensitive skin, choose a sunscreen with
zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. People with
sensitive skin also should avoid sunscreens
that contain fragrance, oils and PABA.

A Heartwarming Moment We received a call from a young lady asking for any history on The Friends Shelter for Girls (currently the three buildings of our Township complex). The young lady’s mother celebrates her 85th birthday this year, and had lived at the Shelter between 1934 and 1938, from ages five to eight. All her mother could remember from such a very young age was that she was well cared for.
Building our files of accurate histories, provided through Impact Studies and ongoing updating of our historic resource records, enable us to easily answer questions from individuals such as this young lady and her mother.
Gathering and cataloguing this information has been provided through our Board of Supervisors. Members of our Commission present ideas such as the Oral History program, the Timeline
in Thornbury Park and our Historical Property history updating, to the Board for their permissions for us to proceed with them. Without the Supervisors forward looking thinking, we would, in the case of this young lady and her mother, not have easily been able to provide answers.
The response we received after helping with this request was lovely and emotional. Not only did our answers provide closure, they also brightened someone’s day, making it all the better.
Helping to preserve and document the Township’s history is our job. That work is done through a team effort of the Supervisors, township staff, the Thornbury Historical Society, and private citizens. We all enter into this with the idea that there is no limit to what can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit. A heartwarming end result, such as this one is the part we care about.

SEWER COMMITTEEINFORMATION
The change in season is always a great time
to perform maintenance and inspections
of your sewer and septic systems. Summer
is no exception. Septic and grinder pump
systems need to be monitored to ensure
that they work properly throughout their
service lives. When these systems are
properly maintained and operated, they
effectively reduce or eliminate most human
health or environmental threats posed
by pollutants in household wastewater.
Avoid allowing strong chemicals, oils,
diapers, plastics etc. from entering your
onsite and pump systems. Before an issue
arises due to harsh temperatures, it may
be best to contact your service providers
about any recommended preventative
maintenance or back-up devices that may
be available. For those with E/One grinder
pumps, we suggest checking out www.
eone.com for monitoring and maintenance
information or calling an authorized
service representative. Site Specific Design
is listed as the service provider for Eastern
Pennsylvania. Their number is (800)295-
8853. Hopefully we won’t experience any
power outages but; if we do, please be
sure to limit your water usage as much as
possible if you are on grinder pump system.
The tank does have storage capacity but
it is only adequate for the short term.
If you haven’t taken advantage of the
infrastructure already in place in the sewer
districts, it may be a good time to revisit
this decision. The Sewer Committee is an
advisory committee that wants to serve
the needs of the residents of Thornbury
Township. We invite residents to attend our
meetings if they are interested in public
sewer for their homes or if they have any
sewer or onsite system inquiries.
Stormwater pollutants find their way into
where we fish, where we swim and what we
drink. Everything that goes into our storm
drains (grass clippings, soap from washing
your car or pet, pesticides and pet waste)
makes its way straight to our streams.
Stormwater pollution is our biggest source of
water pollution. It all adds up!
Do Your Part to Promote Clean Streams and Safe Drinking Water:
• Pick up and properly dispose of pet waste.
• Use a commercial car wash.
• Pick up litter and compost yard waste.
• Maintain your vehicle so it does not leak oil.
• Redirect your downspouts to grassy areas or
a rain barrel to lessen the amount of storm-
water leaving your property and eroding
nearby streambanks.

RUSTIN HIGH SCHOOLDear Class of 2017As you approach graduation day, give these things
some thought: The help, advice, rides, volunteer
hours that your parents gave and the sacrifices they made. Think
of the teacher(s) who took the extra time to make sure YOU got it
and were successful in their class. Remember the friendships you’ve
made. Contemplate the life lessons, the mistakes, all of the good and
bad experiences you had. Think of all of this and be thankful. They’ve
shaped who you are today. Congratulations and best wishes!
