Partner with other community leaders to make a difference!As we begin to work on our 2011 United Way Campaign, wed like to take this opportunity to thank the thousands of individuals, businesses, labor unions, public and private organizations that supported United Way of East Central Iowa last year. We raised a record $10,512,000 to support the work of more than 40 community partners and 59 human service programs and served more than 117,000 people.

United Way is creating opportunities for a better life for people right here in our communities. By focusing on positive, lasting change in the areas of education, income and health, we improve the lives of those most in need in east central Iowa. We know where your contribution is most needed to have the greatest impact. United Way is your best investment because were effective, efficient and convenient. Our funding decisions are guided by community volunteers and our goals are tracked and shared regularly. We hope youll continue to provide support and leadership for United Way. BRITLEYS STORYDuring 2nd grade at Polk Elementary I became a Little Sister. My mom was working at Mercy Hospital and raising four kids. My dad wasnt really involved in my life. In December of 2000 I met Lois Ralston, my Big Sister. We ate lunch together, played games and even practiced spelling. Lois bought me a dry erase board so we could work on math problems too. Lois favorite thing, she said, was when I ran up to greet her with a big smile and a hug when she came to visit. I liked our friendship too. It made me feel good and helped me become more confident. In 5th grade Big Brothers Big Sisters offered the School Buddies program and we met every other week at school and talked on the phone in between. Lois sent me letters and postcards. One of them said, Im so proud of you. Good grades. Keep it up! Lois and I made contracts throughout middle school with goals for attendance and grades. I earned a digital camera with my work. Im now a junior at Washington High School. Lois and I have researched colleges and I want to be a teacher because I love kids. It has been a very rewarding 9 years being a Little Sister. We have grown together and learned so much about each other. We will be friends forever.

MARYS STORYMary, a mother of two, entered the Mound View Neighborhood Resource Center hesitantly, having been referred to us by a local organization. Shed heard that we offered bread to the community. We invited her in to see if there were other ways that we could provide assistance. She felt humbled and embarrassed to need our help. Mary had been a stay-at-home mother for sixteen years. Her husband had always had a good job and been able to provide for the family. For the first time in their 20-year marriage he was unemployed. She shared with us her inability to provide food for the family after paying the mortgage, car payments, insurance etc. She was able to sign up for a food basket. When l asked if she had Food Assistance, she cried and said No. Each question created another opportunity to share her story and despair. Her son is in choir and they had pictures taken for the yearbook. Mary had to buy shoes for him and instructed her son to not wear them, but to just put them on for the picture and remove them immediately so that she could return the shoes to the store because they could not afford them. Mary was relieved to talk with people who did not judge and were able to help her family. When she left, she hugged me. It seemed like the heavy load on her shoulders had been lightened a little.

OUR VISION: Communities where all people are aware of and can access resources to help them achieve nancial stability.Thats why last year United Way invested $965,000 in strategies that ensure people have access to a safety net of services that support their basic needs, $672,000 in strategies that ensure low income households have access to support services and $183,000 that helps people build skills and income.7

ROYS STORYRoy has been coming to Southeast Linn Community Center (SLCC) for more than 10 years. When he first started coming with his wife Joyce, they enjoyed socializing during congregate meals and even volunteered to help in the kitchen prepping meals for delivery. Through the years they were there for each other. Then, a year ago, Joyce passed away. Soon after, Roys health started to diminish. He wasnt able to come for congregate meals and needed support getting to doctor appointments. Because of the cost of medication and other expenses he couldnt always afford food and was in need of a new walker and other medical devices. He could no longer do household chores and needed help with yard work. SLCC signed Roy up for home delivered meals. He occasionally attends congregate meals, but the delivered meals ensure he is eating everyday and a safety check is performed six times a week. We provide him with rides to doctor appointments and gave him a new walker and other medical equipment. Our Food Pantry program makes sure Roy has enough food and can afford his medication. We arranged for chores to be performed around his house and were able to get some volunteers to paint his house. Roy now has the help he needs and is able to remain in the home avoiding long term placement.

nutritional health and remain independent. Thats why United Way makes an annual investment of $1,664,000 to fund health strategies and why we invested $822,000 last year in community based services for over 9,800 older adults.

UNITED WAY AT WORK IN OUR COMMUNITIESVolunteer ProgramsUWECI is the areas central resource for connecting people to volunteer opportunities and promoting and educating our communities on the importance of volunteerism. United Way brings together individuals, families, seniors, businesses, schools, service clubs and other groups with a desire to improve lives and strengthen communities through volunteering. Our online volunteer resource is www.corridorvolunteers.org. Visitors to the site will find hundreds opportunities and search for opportunities based on their interest, skills and geographic location. RSVP engages individuals 55 and older so they can share their lifes experiences, skills and talents in meaningful volunteer opportunities that address pressing community needs. RSVP strives to provide a quality experience that will enrich the lives of our volunteers.

RSVP helped coordinate over 80,000 hours of volunteer service, valued at $1,660,000. United Way 2-1-1 is a free,

United Way 2-1-1confidential information and referral service that connects people to trained call specialists who help them find local resources for everyday needs or in times of crisis or disaster. We serve 24 counties and 834,000 residents. In 2010, we received 59,690 calls for assistance or support. The majority of calls request information about food, utility and housing assistance, income assistance, childcare, and healthcare. To learn more about 2-1-1 visit www.211iowa.org.

Day of CaringOur one day service opportunity for local businesses and nonprofits is now in its 13th year. In 2010, over 1,250 volunteers participated, representing over 50 local companies. Thanks to your support, they completed more than 100 different projects for local nonprofit organizations. This program provides participants with a glance at volunteering, gives your company exposure in the community, increases team spirit and company morale. Employees feel good about working for a company thats committed to making a difference.
