Letter from Canon Sue Oliver … How this past year has flown and as I write this, it is not long after the first anniversary of being your parish priest.

And an anniversary gives an opportunity to look back…and to look forward.

Looking back, I don’t think anywhere I have worked as hard and for such long hours as I do here. Each of the villages is different, each has duplicates, not just of churches but also village/church halls, village institutions; there are three schools, three PCC’s ……it is impossible to do as much as I should like let alone what you all want me to do.

Thankfully, I just love living in our beautiful countryside and being a parish priest.

And looking forward, I have plans to seek to appoint a children and families worker , initially in Fairfield and Belbroughton who will be able to do so much more than I can with links between our schools and churches, working alongside young parents and following up on all the Baptisms/Christenings I do.

And as we all need to do, I need to plan how to keep myself healthy and in good mental and spiritual shape. Being informed recently that I’m at risk of developing type 2 Diabetes, I need to do more exercise and lose weight. So, when you and if you see me around, please encourage me …we all need encouragement.

As for the mental and spiritual well-being maintenance, in the first week of October I am going on a Pilgrimage, to Rome. Three years ago, I went with many of the same people t the Holy Land on pilgrimage and know that I am going to find it both a challenge and a joy (Just like parish life).

It’s a Ecumenical Pilgrimage, jointly with Roman Catholics, half and half, co-led by Bishop John Inge, our Diocesan Bishop and the Roman Catholic, Archbishop Bernard Longley, both of whom are good friends. The whole experience is soaked in prayer and worship and I shall return brim full of the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control (Galatians Chapter 5, verses 22-23).

I came across in putting together some materials for something I have to do in Rome, the following prayer which speaks from where I am at and I commend to us all.

O God, our Heavenly Father; we come to you in our weakness asking for strength. Help us always to be of good cheer. Let us never doubt your promises. Give us grace to be encouragers of others, never discouragers, always making life easier, never harder for those who come within our influence. Help us to be as Christ to others, that they may see something of His love in our lives and learn to love Him in us. Amen.

Prayers and Blessings

Canon Sue

Letter from the Archdeacon of Dudley

Over the summer I read the Good Childhood Report 2019 published by The Children’s Society, and was sad, but not surprised, to learn that children and young people have become increasingly unhappy as childhood becomes ever more complex. The society’s research shows that many children are unhappy with their friendships and their appearance, and are concerned about wider issues like school culture, the experiences

of those with low or strained family finances, and whether or not some children actually feel safe during the school day. Too many children are struggling with their lives now, and large numbers are also anxious about their future. Large proportions of children are worried about everything from money and getting good grades at school, to wider issues like crime and the environment.

It is so important that we keep reminding ourselves and each other that working with children and young people is one of our strategic priorities, and that as part of our Kingdom People vision we are

dedicated to helping children and young people to belong and be nurtured in faith

We can all play a part in this. Even if we don’t have many children in our church, most of us will have contact with children in our family and friendship groups. How can we better mentor them, share faith with them, instil confidence in them and communicate their inherent value to them? How can we help to ease their unhappiness? Perhaps by showing unconditional love, and spending quality time with them; certainly, by committing to pray for them.

Mark Russell, Canon of Worcester Cathedral and new Chief Executive of the Children’s Society, said in his introduction to the report, “How can we enable children to thrive not just survive. How do we solve problems like rising mental ill-health, millions living in poverty and the scandal of far too many young lives being lost to knife crime and exploitation? We must start by listening to young people. I mean REALLY listening. We need to stop side-lining young people and harness their enthusiasm and radical energy for change.”

As a new school year gets underway, let’s commit afresh to helping the children of the Diocese of Worcester to belong and be nurtured in faith. Let’s pray for our church schools, all who work with children in paid or voluntary roles, and the Mission Enablers supporting churches as part of our Calling Young Disciples project, and let’s listen to the children and young people we know and harness their enthusiasm and energy for change, that their future might be full of hope, and our lives enriched by the part they play.

GIVING TO THE CHURCHES There are a number of ways that donations can be made towards the work of the three churches in our parish. By placing your gift on the collection plate at any service. By putting your gift in the Free Will Offering boxes or using the Free Will envelopes which are at the rear of each church. By making a gift on the annual Church Gift Day. By coming to and enjoying one of the church fund-raising events. By gifting online through give.net which is part of 'Stewardship' - a Christian Charity. give.net is easy to use.... Eg, go into www.give.net and click onto ‘Find a Charity’ Type “Blakedown and Churchill Churches, wait a moment for the church to pop up and then follow the simple instructions. NB it is quite common for this not to work first time, in which case please re-type and all should be revealed! For UK taxpayers, there is gift aid box to tick and Stewardship remits the tax reclaim to the church, thus easing the burden on the Acting Treasurer. The only income that your churches receive is from the generous gifts made by members of the congregations and communities. From these gifts the general running costs of the church buildings have to be met (there are always repairs needed to these beautiful old buildings) and the stipend of your Priest, the Rectory running costs and all church mission and outreach costs. So, ALL contributions are very, very gratefully received.

Kitchen Corner

CHICKEN SATAY SALAD Ingredients 1 tbsp tamari 1 tsp medium curry powder ¼ tsp ground cumin 1 garlic clove, finely grated 1 tsp clear honey 2 chicken breast fillets 1 tbsp lime juice 1 tbsp crunch peanut butter Sunflower oil 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 gem lettuce hearts ¼ cucumber, sliced 1 banana shallot handful of coriander Seeds from ½ pomegranate Method Pour the tamari into a large dish and stir in the curry powder, cumin, garlic and honey. Mix well. Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally to make 4 fillets in total, then add to the marinade and mix well to coat. Set aside in the fridge for at leas 1h or overnight, to allow the flavours to penetrate the chicken. Meanwhile, mix the peanut butter with the chilli sauce, lime juice, and 1 tbsp water to make a spoonable sauce. When ready to cook the chicken, wipe a large non-stick frying pan with a little oil. Add the chicken and cook, covered with a lid, for 5-6mins on a medium heat, turning the fillets over the last minute, until cooked but still moist. Set aside, covered, to rest for a few minutes. While the chicken rests, toss the lettuce wedges with the cucumber, shallot,, coriander and pomegranate and pile onto plates. Spoon over a little sauce. Slice the chicken, pile on top of the salad and spoon over the remaining sauce. Eat while the chicken is still warm. © bbcgoodfood.com

THOUGHTS OF THE DAY

How can "crash course" and "collision course" have two different meanings? I attempted being a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard.

I AM in shape. Round is a shape. Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

Extract from the Broadcast Magazine October 1919:

As announced in last month’s magazine, the Harvest Festival was held at Churchill on September 26th and the Sunday following. The Church was very nicely decorated, although there were much fewer flowers than usual owing to one or two very severe frosts a few days before. There was a very good congregation on the Friday evening, when the sermon was preached by the Rev. S. Lloyd, Vicar of Broadheath, and the Sunday Services were well attended, the 29 communicants at the 7.30 service being two less than last year, while the collection of £1 for the Organist Fund at that Service was curiously enough exactly the same as the collection at the corresponding service last year, when it was for the Worcestershire Prisoners of War Fund. Diocesan report for Churchill land Blakedown: Churchill: A happy reverent atmosphere prevails… Blakedown School: A reverent spirit prevails….. The Missionary Pageant at Stourbridge…. NEWS FROM CHADDESLEY CORBETT SURGERY

INFLUENZA VACCINATIONS - AN UPDATE FROM THE SURGERY AT CHADDESLEY CORBETT

Now is the time to think about protecting yourself against influenza. If you are over 65, pregnant or have an underlying health condition (such as respiratory illness, diabetes or heart disease) you really should have an influenza vaccination.

The injection is offered annually to be effective as every year the strains of circulating influenza change. The vaccination is the best protection we have against this unpredictable virus which can be both unpleasant and in susceptible people lead to severe illness and

even death. Serious side effects are very rare and the protection offered although not 100% will help prevent serious illness in the great majority of cases.

Children are also eligible to receive the vaccination as a nasal spray: this is routinely offered to all children aged 2 and 3. Children in reception class and school years one, two, three and four will be offered the vaccination at school. Children aged 2 to 17 at particular risk due to underlying health problems are also advised to have the flu vaccination.

The Surgery has arranged an INFLUENZA VACCINATION CLINIC FOR THE OVER 65s on SATURDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER. Appointment times can be booked by telephoning or otherwise contacting the Surgery.

FOR THE UNDER 65s, APPOINTMENTS WILL BE ARRANGED TOWARDS THE END OF OCTOBER. Again, please contact the Surgery for an appointment.

The surgery ‘phone number is 01562 777239 Please ring to book your flu vaccination or if you have any questions about this important seasonal protection. Clinic dates are also available on the Practice Website.

SIMPLY THE BEST!......

Great News – Chaddesley Surgery has been given an Outstanding rating for Patient Care following the recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) Inspection. Congratulations to all the medical and support staff on achieving this much sought after accolade.

More Great News – The nationwide IPSOS MORI Patient Satisfaction Poll rates the Chaddesley Surgery as 116th out of 7,600 GP Practices. Again, well done all and thanks.

NEW NURSING TEAM

A new Nursing Team has recently joined Chaddesley Surgery. Dawn and Lydia, both former experienced District Nurses, are the new Practice Nurses and they have been joined by Jenny, who has a hospital surgery background, as the Surgery Healthcare Assistant. A big welcome to all of you!

CHADDESLEY PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) ….. YOUR PPG NEEDS YOU!!

Your PPG needs you!! Chaddesley Corbett Surgery has had a Patient Participation Group (CCPPG) for over 20 years and the Group meets regularly with the doctors in the Practice to discuss current and longer term issues which affect the patients. The matters considered have a wide range; they cover the domestic and staffing matters at the Surgery as well as broader NHS issues in the Wyre Forest, Worcestershire and nationally.

There are currently eight members in the CCPPG and there is an effort to represent the concerns of all patients registered with the Practice regardless of age or gender. More members are needed so if you are interested in joining the Group please contact Diane Dolley, the Chair of Chaddesley Corbett PPG, [email protected] and she will be pleased to talk to you. CHOIR PROFICIENCY TEST In order to measure your level of proficiency as a choir member, the following test has been carefully developed by experts. Read and reflect on each situation and then select the option that will enhance the quality of the performance. 1. You are entering the choir loft on Sunday morning and suddenly trip and fall down. You should: a. Assume a kneeling position and break into fervent prayer. b. Pretend that you've had a heart attack. c. Crawl into the nearest chair. d. Begin speaking in tongues. 2. You are a soprano and count incorrectly. As a result, you boom out a high "C" one measure too soon. You should: a. Slide into an inspired "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing." b. Look triumphant and hold on to the note. c. Stop abruptly in mid squawk but keep your lips moving. d. Sink to the floor in shame. 3. After all those long, hard choir rehearsals, you show up twenty minutes late for the Christmas musical. You should: a. Climb into the back row of the choir from the baptistry. b. Enter pretending to be a soundman checking cables and then suddenly slip yourself into the choir. c. Turn the lights out in the church and slip into the choir during the blackout. d. Read M. Stephen's pamphlet "Techniques for Tardy Appearances." 4. While singing, you discover you have only one page of a two-page hymn. You should: a. Hum for your life. b. Sing "watermelon, watermelon, watermelon." c. Try to get another hymnal out of the choir rack with your feet. d. Sing the first page over again. 5. Inevitably that dreaded big sneeze occurs toward the end of the choir special. You should: a. As you sneeze, come down hard on your neighbour's foot to create a diversion. b. Try to make it harmonize. c. Sneeze into the hair of the choir member in front of you to muffle the noise. d. Sink to the floor in shame. Count the number of A's, B's, C's, and D's you checked and find your proficiency rating below: 4 or more A's...there is nothing more you need to know to be a first-rate choir member. 4 or more B's...your church choir reflexes are fully developed and you should do well in choir. 4 or more C's...your church choral experience is spotty but your team spirit is on target. You will be an asset to most any choir. 4 or more D's...it is recommended you take up soccer or group therapy counselling.

CHURCHILL AND BLAKEDOWN PARISH COUNCIL

Wyre Forest District Council has now re-opened its Local Plan Pre-Submission Consultation. The deadline for comments is 5.00 p.m. Monday 14th October 2019. The Local Plan identifies where development sites for homes and business will be and the services and infrastructure needed to support them. Amendments have been made to the Pre-Submission

version of the Plan which was consulted on at the end of last year. This includes: • changes to the transport infrastructure • taking out the Yew Tree Walk site in Stourport • including land for development at Blakedown Railway station • adding an employment site off Zortech Avenue

The amendments which directly affect Blakedown are a proposal to provide additional car parking places. The previous Plan, published in October 2018, showed Station Yard as a site which could potentially provide car parking for the station for 80 cars. The revised Plan provides for a further 170 car parking spaces on the field behind the telephone exchange, bordered by Station Drive and Birmingham Road. The development would be financed by building 50 houses on the same field, which would be taken into the village boundary and out of Green Belt land.

Wyre Forest District Council wants to ensure that anyone interested in the Plan has the opportunity to comment on the proposals, but is keen to stress that if you commented previously you do not need to respond again unless you wish to change or add to previous comments.

The documents can be viewed at www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/localplanreview or the following locations - Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley Libraries, Wyre Forest House or The Hub in Kidderminster.

The Parish Council is consulted by the Planning Authority, Wyre Forest District Council, on planning applications that are made in the Parish. At the meeting in July 2019 the following applications were considered

19/0394/FULL 10 NEW WOOD LANE BLAKEDOWN - Extension to existing porch, single storey rear extension, provision of terraced area and external alterations. 19/0377/FULL 2 GLADSTONE PLACE BLAKEDOWN - Single storey rear extension and two storey side extension. 19/0380/FULL CHAMPSON RISE 1 ROXALL CLOSE BLAKEDOWN -Change of use of existing dwelling to a mixed use of residential dwelling and aesthetic clinic.

The dates for the next three Parish Council meetings are 18th September 2019, 16th October 2019 and 20th November 2019.

IF DOGS WROTE LETTERS TO GOD... Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another? Dear God: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your sofa? Or is it still the same old story? Dear God: If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog? Dear God: How come there's so much spaghetti and so few meatballs? Dear God: Are there postmen in Heaven? If so, will I have to apologize?

BLAKEDOWN WI – August meeting

We meet second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in

Blakedown Parish Room. Please join us – visitors very

welcome

Our August meeting took place in the afternoon and was our annual summer tea party for members. After dealing as briefly as possible with our business, the afternoon started with Janet Dickinson, a poet from Chaddesley Corbett reading some of her poems to us. They were amusing, thought provoking and very entertaining.

Tea was then served and the Committee had organised a scrumptious high tea of sandwiches, scones and cream, a huge variety of cakes and lashings of tea. It all went down very well indeed.

Janet Dickinson finished our afternoon off with a few more poems and after the raffle was drawn the ladies were reminded that at our September meeting we would welcome Colin Millett who talks to us about Worcestershire Porcelain.

On the 20th August nineteen ladies had visited Farlands Garden in Tenbury Wells. It was a beautiful day and we were welcomed by the gardens owners Mr and Mrs Eachus. They gave us a brief talk about how the garden had developed since they bought the property in 2003 and the huge amount of landscaping and planting since then. Mr Eachus then took us on a tour around the garden which was absolutely beautiful. We were then given a lovely tea and cakes on the terrace and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. A big thank you to June Gordon for arranging it.

LOCAL NEWS

CLENT GARDENING CLUB

The month of August started with a Friday evening visit to “Hiraeth” a private garden in Droitwich. The visit was rearranged from earlier in the year when a deluge of rain caused a postponement. This time the sun shone on a relatively new house with an unprepossessing front garden which hid a small but majestic rear garden behind its garden gate. Not a blade of grass or weed was to be seen in a well-stocked and enterprisingly laid out garden full of acers and a wealth of other plants and ornaments and with a large carp pond as a central feature. Members also enjoyed a relaxing coffee and slice of cake on our host’s patio. Later in the month the regular monthly meeting welcomed Rob Cole and his wife Diane to the village hall. Diane came fully laden with an array of plants for sale and left virtually empty handed. Meanwhile husband Rob gave a highly informative and entertaining talk on “Perennials from seed” giving a wealth of useful information on pot preparation and the best compost mix to achieve the best results. His talk was embellished with a practical demonstration which will doubtless have persuaded many members to upgrade their plant growing skills from seed. Rob explained that patience is a virtue as some seeds can take up to a year to germinate. He advised that seed pots can be left outdoors to overwinter and there is no need to put them in a greenhouse or cold frame as they will benefit from being open to the elements. Some protection from mice and birds may, however, be advisable and hopefully the results will then be seen in the garden in the following months. Furthermore the results will be profitable as one can gather seeds from existing plants without the need to purchase them from your local nursery. After the regulation question and answer session members and guests enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits before the raffle was drawn and the Chairman announced the results of the monthly competitions. The Chairman reminded members that the annual Flower Show would be on Saturday 7 September at the village hall whilst the next monthly meeting comprised a talk by Steven Ballinger entitled “Seasonal Jottings from Clent Nursery” to be held at the village hall on Friday 27 September.. All are welcome at our meetings which are held at Clent Village Hall on the 4th Friday each month and anyone interested in either joining or just visiting the Club can get further details by visiting our website on https://clentgardeningclub.wordpress.com or by contacting our Chairman Martin Grange 01562 883009/07917 184762. July/August The Hagley Rotary Club started their summer by investing Godfrey Partridge as Club President, which was celebrated in style at the Crown and Sandy’s in Ombersley. At the handover meeting, Past President Julie Banks gave a pictorial presentation of her year in Rotary which had been a full and rewarding experience. President Godfrey said he planned for the coming year to be as full and rewarding as the last one with more social events and partners evenings which engaged the family of Rotary in its activities. Children from Chernobyl One of the highlights in our summer program is to host the Children from Chernobyl at our summer BBQ which is hosted by Rotarians Ann and Hassan Paraiso. The children enjoyed the football practice and trampolining proudly sporting their “I LOVE HAGLEY ROTARY” T-Shirts. Later Ann Beck, who is credited with administering this annual project visited our Monday Evening meeting with two of the children and expressed her gratitude to the Rotary Club of Hagley for its financial and moral support. French Connection As part of our international dimension and inclusive program we were privileged to have Ross McElligott, the new owner of “The French Connection” in Stourbridge as a guest speaker. He outlined in vivid detail the problems of taking on a business whose premises where not only old, but historical, and the compounded difficulties engaged in getting a new restaurant off-the ground when faced with structural improvements and maintenance ordeals. The evening passed with good wishes and applause for endeavour with the commitment for the club to visit the French Connection in the near future and sample the excellent cuisine promised. So if readers would like to have fun with purpose give consideration to joining our club who meet at 7.00pm for 7.30pm on Monday evenings at the Lyttleton Arms by visiting our website at https://hagleyrotary.wixsite.com/website.
