CAR RENTALBratislava offers the possibility to rent a car through international companies such as Hertz, Avis, Sixt or Europcar. Their branches can usually be found in large hotels or at the airport. In the city, however, you will find local car rental companies that offer similarly quality services at comprehensive prices.

PARKINGOn the main streets of the city centre there are signboards indicating the current number of parking vacancies in underground car parks or parking lots. Parking on the streets in the centre is charged. Parking charges can be paid by SMS or by purchasing a card in the parking machine. Payment is due on business days from 8:00 to 16:00.

TAXIIt is preferable to book a taxi by phone rather than use the services of a fixed stand, or stop a cab on the street. The minimum fare for short distances is around 5 EUR. We recommend checking the price before boarding the vehicle. Every taxi vehicle must have the price list installed in a visible place and use a taxi-meter. It is advantageous to order a taxi through the HOPIN application.

ON FOOT OR BY BICYCLEThe advantage of Bratislava is the compactness of the city centre, so most of its key attractions can be reached on foot. The latest city innovation is bike sharing - a shared system of stations with yellow bicycles. www.slovnaftbajk.sk Travel documents and visas

Slovakia is part of the Schengen area and allows visa-free entry to the coun-try for citizens of the European Union

with a valid passport or ID card. For-eigners subject to a visa requirement are obliged to submit a visa application to the local embassy of the Slovak Republic or to the Consulate General. Visas are not issued at the places of arrival (airport, port, etc.).www.mzv.sk

UFO on the DanubeThe lookout tower with a restaurant on a Danube bridge resembling a UFO is one of the symbols of the capital city. The UFO tower is 95 m high and offers visitors views over the neighbouring countryside within a 100 km radius.

MARVELLOUS PANORAMAS

Devín Castle

you can see the city in the palm of your hand. The most popular sightseeing place in the historical centre is the courtyard of Bratislava Castle. During a tour of the Old Town we recommend you to overcome your fear of heights or laziness and climb the stairs of the Old Town Hall tower and Michael’s Tower, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the streets and squares, colourful roofs and dominant landmarks. The unlimited horizon also opens up from the high cliff where the Devin ruins soar at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers.

Marvellous panoramas The charm of the city and its dominant buildings is best seen as a bird‘s eye view from the tops of the neigh-bouring hills, lookout terraces and towers of historic buildings. An alternative view of the city also opens up from the deck of a boat cruising the Danube River.

Along the Danube riverbankBratislava is often called the Beauty on the Danube. This European river giant is a refreshing part of the city centre. The promenade on both banks is good for pleasant walks, jogging or a relax-ing seat in a cafe or on the lawns with romantic river views.

On the DanubeSightseeing cruises under the Bratisla-va bridges are a good choice for a comfortable tour of Bratislava‘s main landmarks from a slightly different per-spective. Devín Castle proudly tower-ing over the confluence of the Danube

and Morava rivers is also accessible by the river. In the high season there are boat trips to Čunovo, to the Museum of Modern Art - a compelling gallery on the Danube peninsula. The Danube also connects Bratislava with Austria and Hungary, tourists especially enjoy the regular return cruises between Vienna and Bratislava. It is possible to rent vessels for special cruises, family, corporate and social events to enjoy exceptional moments with extraordi-nary panoramic views.

City from aboveThe highest point of Bratislava is the

Devínska Kobyla hill at 514 metres above sea level. The tallest building in Bratislava is the Kamzik TV Tower, which rises to a height of almost 200 metres on the Kamzik Hill (439 metres above sea level) in the Koliba forest park. Its attraction is the rotating restaurant in the tower which offers a 360 degrees panoramic view. There is a smaller but more natural alterna-tive to enjoy the most beautiful sights of Bratislava from a wooden lookout tower on a nearby meadow called American Square. Closer to the city at a height of 52 metres is the largest war memorial in Central Europe, where

The building fully captures its “iconic” status as a symbol and dominant feature of the capital and is an integral part of its unique skyline. It only takes 45 seconds in the high speed lift to get a diametrically different and attractive view of the city on the Danube and its surroundings. At a height of 95 metres above ground level and a visibility of more than 100 km a perfect panorama opens up in front of you and an unforgettable experience begins. The lookout tower, bar and restaurant are located at the very top of the SNP Bridge columns. The bridge itself is a minimalist and efficient design.

ON THE WINGS OF MUSIC

The new building of the Slovak National Theatre on the Danube embankment is also a remarkable architectural work, but of a modern look. Choose from opera, ballet, drama and classical music concerts and combine an artistic experience with a tour of the interior.

Festivals of different genresEvery musical genre can be found at the Bratislava s music festivals. These events are held regularly every year and have an international flavour. For enthusiasts of the classics we recommend first-class events such as Bratislava Music Festival, Convergen-

ces, Viva Musica!, Bratislava Jazz Days, whilst for followers of other music styles there is Uprising reggae, World Music Festival, Advent and Christmas Music Festival, and there are also gui-tar, organ, choir and folklore festivals.

Three months of culture The Cultural Summer and Castle Festival Bratislava is a series of multi-genre pro-grams for various interests in the streets of the city. The biggest summer cultural festival of the capital, full of concerts and performances.

On the wings of musicIn the past, the city hosted several music giants. To commemorate them there are plaques on the wallsof palaces. The city is full of cultural events throughout the year, which you can enjoy in the historic interiorsof the theatre and the philharmonic, but also right in the city streets.

Visits of musical geniusesCompositions by famous representa-tives of classical music were played in the houses of the Bratislava aristo-crats, sometimes even by the compos-ers themselves. In 1762 the six-year-old W. A. Mozart played a concerto on Ventúrska Street and Franz Liszt per-formed where the University Library is based today. Ludwig van Beethoven also visited Bratislava. Joseph Haydn performed as a conductor for Count Nicholas I. Esterházy in his palace on Kapitulská Street and in 1772 he also conducted the orchestra at a ball in the Grassalkovich Palace on the occasion

of the marriage of Maria Christina, daughter of Maria Theresa.

Museum from a family houseMusic composer, pianist and conductor Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born in Bratislava and is author of several operas, piano concertos and masses. He received basic music education from W. A. Mozart, cooperated with J. Haydn and was a concert master in the orchestra of Count M. Esterházy. Russian pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein played a memorable con-cert in Bratislava and the profits were used to build a J. N. Hummel memorial.

In the Renaissance garden house on Klobučnícka Street where Hummel was born in 1778, a museum was estab-lished, where you can find fragments of his musical notation and a collection of musical instruments.

Exceptional art in spectacular space High-quality performances, magic mel-odies, world-class performers and a rich repertoire also deserve exception-al spaces. The historical building of the Slovak National Theatre and Reduta, the home of the Slovak Philharmonic, is a landmark in Hviezdoslav Square.

THE CITY IN DIFFERENT WAYS

Jewish BratislavaBratislava has a rich Jewish history and despite the tragedies of the past, there are still many interesting places that commemorate the local Jewish community and are part of the Jewish cultural heritage, e.g. Jewish Street, Cha-tam Sofer Memorial, synagogue, Jewish Community Museum and Museum of Jewish Culture, Holocaust Memorial and two Jewish cemeteries.

Trips to the region The unique location of Bratislava offers amazing opportunities for trips to the surrounding region. Available excur-

sions are: wine cellars of royal towns (Pezinok, Modra, Svätý Jur) on the Small Carpathian Wine Route, Červený Kameň Castle and Falconry displays in Častá, Sunny Lakes and Aquapark in Senec, pilgrimage site in Marianka, an oasis of Siberian tigers in Kostolná, water mills on the Danube and a com-prehensive cycling infrastructure.

Alternative BratislavaSpecial tours of the socialist architecture of the city, the legendary prefabricated housing suburb and the memorial park of fallen Soviet soldiers on Slavín, can be attended in a veteran Škoda car or in a retro bus. Another authentic attraction is the military bunker of the former defence system and the Museum of Petržalka’s Fortification located at the former Iron Curtain border.

can connect with two international cycling routes - the Danube (Eurovelo 6) and the Iron Curtain Cycle Route (Eurovelo 13), which run along the rivers Danube and Morava towards Austria or Hungary. Devín Castle and the Danubiana Museum in Čunovo can also be reached by bicycle. For nature lovers we recommend cycling trips in the Small Carpathian Mountains and adrenaline fans can try the downhill track in the Bratislava forest park.

Relax by the water During the hot days the lakes are the right places to cool down and enjoy

water sports. You can try speedboats, scooters, surfing, water skis, and hy-drospeed on several water areas. The recreation area Golden Sands (Zlaté piesky) also offers adrenaline wake-boarding and flyboard. The natural beauty of the Danube river and its dead channels also attract rowers.

Active relaxation in natureDiscover the green corners of the city and find time to relax. Swap the bustle of the city for the sounds of nature, spend the night in a tree house, run a marathon, discover the surrounding areas by bike and ride the waves.

Forest in the cityFrom the city it is just a short leap into the forest. The Horský Park with its original forest environment boasts a 130-year-old gamekeeper’s lodge. A popular leisure location is the Bratisla-va forest park with a TV Tower on the top of Kamzík hill, which offers a pan-oramic view from its rotating restau-rant. A chair lift operates between the stations of Kamzík and Železná Studnička. A goal of family trips is a bob-sleigh route with near rope park and lovers of natural romance will en-joy two tree-top houses. The protected landscape areas around Devínska

Kobyla and Small Carpathians (Malé Karpaty) create ideal conditions for or-ganized bird-watching and observation of flora and fauna. The Sandberg site of fossils of prehistoric marine life is also very unique.

Parks with a hint of history The city centre is refreshed by parks whose history dates back to the 18th century. You can spend pleasant time in the city park Sad J. Kráľa - the oldest public park in Central Europe, or in the park Medická záhrada or Botanical Gar-den. An interesting feature of the Gras-salkovich Garden at the Presidential

SELECTION OF VARIED TASTES

Rolls with protected recipeThe most famous speciality and a favourite souvenir from Bratislava is the original Bratislava Roll. In the past, they were even regularly supplied to the Imperial Court in Vienna. Today the European Union has designated them a protected traditional product. They are exclusively handmade according to a prescribed formula without any chemical additives and the surface must be glossy and ‘marbled’. There are two kinds of this sweet delicacy - C-shaped with walnut filling or horseshoe-shaped with poppy-seed filling.

Selection of varied tastesBratislava has always been a crossroads of different nations. The variety of flavours in Bratislava cuisine is a result of the different ingredients and methods of preparing meals from the time of the Austro-Hungari-an Monarchy, mixed with traditional Slovak dishes. The city’s culinary experience is further enriched by the wide range of specialties from other parts of the world.

From street-food to a decent dinner with panoramic viewBratislava offers a wide range of eater-ies where you can satisfy your hunger, taste the local specialties and spend time in pleasant company. Whether you stop for a snack in a street-food kiosk or enjoy a full-course menu at a fancy restaurant with international cui-sine, there is always plenty of options. Have a lunch break in the historical city centre or on the Danube embankment, just a short leap from the interesting tourist sights. Experience tasty dinner with a romantic panoramic view at the UFO tower located on the top of SNP

(Slovak National Uprising) bridge or the popular rotating restaurant at Kamzík TV Tower. Traditional Slovak and local “Prešporok” dishes are to be found on the menu of every good restaurant and many of these are well-known for beer from their own micro-breweries.

Taste the city The basic ingredients of traditional Slo-vak cuisine, influenced by a shepherd culture, are potatoes, cabbage and sheep’s cheese. Once in Slovakia, you should try original potato gnocchi with “bryndza“ (sheep’s cheese), pickled sliced cabbage, potato pancakes,

cheese-filled dumplings, bean or a cab-bage soup, pork rind biscuits “pagáče“ and sweet strudels. The closeness of the river Danube and Hungarian influence is notable in the type of fish dishes whilst you can also order Hun-garian goulash or “perkelt” with dump-lings. Alternatively, beef sirloin with dumplings and other delicious Czech specialities taste best with a good beer. In addition, there are plenty of places offering Italian or Asian specialties.

SELECTION OF VARIED TASTES

The land of goose delicaciesAn unforgettable gourmet experience in the Bratislava region is crispy roasted goose or duck with thin potato pancakes “lokša” and stewed cabbage or delicious foie gras served with “lokša” potato pancakes. The goose (or duck) feast season is in the autumn during the grape harvest festivals, however some restaurants offer this excep-tional specialty throughout the year.

Street Food ParkEvery month you can experience the real atmosphere of street-food at the Street Food Festival in front of the Old Market building. Traditional dishes in unconven-tional combinations dispensed from food trucks serve as first aid against hunger and ensure an excellent frame of mind.

Sweet pleasure with the scent of coffeeThe long history of cafes in the city is reflected in the number of cafes and pastry shops, where you can sit, rest and enjoy the original Bratislava rolls, strudels or desserts with a good cup of coffee. Try a healthy raw cake, genuine ice cream with unconventional flavours or have your own “selfiecino” – coffee with your own portrait.

Party after darkBratislava is a city that lives to the full-est even after sunset. During summer

time the restaurant terraces invite you for long friendly discussion and enter-tainment is assured in the wide range of music clubs, bars and discos.

Events full of flavourVarious types of gastro-festival, spiced up with cultural programmes are the best introduction to local cuisine and seasonal specialties. They occur in all seasons: Winter Food Festival and Christmas Market, Easter Markets in Spring, Gurman Fest, Slovak Food Festival and the traditional goose feast season in Autumn.

A unique combination of souvenir shop and café with its own production of homemade cakes. With the arrival of Zeppelin the city centre finally gained a store which is not an over-priced tourist trap. A successful combination of good-quality café-pastry and souvenir shop with an ambient atmosphere makes Café Zeppelin a place you cannot find anywhere else. But the biggest temptation of Zeppelin is definitely the cakes: homemade, juicy, honest, sweet or salty, plus a few gluten-free versions. We definitely recommend you to make a stop here!

Wine celebrationThe biggest celebrations of the wine season are the harvesting festivities including wine craft demonstrations, allegorical parades, folk festivals and local wine tasting which are held during September in the towns of Pezinok, Modra and district of Rača.

More winemaking events are: Feast of Young Wine on St. Martin‘s Days, Open Wine Cellars, Wine and Lavender, A Day in the Vineyards, Ríbezľový Devín – Currant Fruit Wine Festival, Wandering around Bratislava Wine Cellars, Excur-sion to Rača s Wine Cellars

Devín’s currant fruit wineThe speciality of the Devín district is the local currant wine made from black and red currants and called Devínsky ríbezlák.

Liquid treasuresGood food also deserves tasty beer or delicious wine. Bratislava is part of the Small Carpathian Wine Region and so in restaurants, wine shops, wine bars and cel-lars you are also likely to find a selection of wines from local producers. Beer and wine festivals are organized right in the city centre, but it is worthwhile to discover the city surroundings and enjoy wine tasting and wine events throughout entire Small Carpathian region.

BeerIn the city you can choose from several brewery restaurants with their own beer production prepared to the tradi-tional “Prešporok” recipe. In addition to well-known beer brands there is also a boom of small craft breweries that bring unconventional tastes to the beer market. In restaurants, pubs and beer houses there is a wide selection of beer based on its origin, production process, colour and taste. Micro-brew-eries present their products for public tasting during specialized events. Doz-ens of craft breweries and hundreds of types of beer accompanied by street

food and entertainment is awaiting the visitors to the Craft Beer Festival - Beer Salon or at Bratislava Oktoberfest.

A land of delicious winesThe largest viniculture region of Slovakia is located in the vicinity of Bratislava, where grape growing on the hills of the Small Carpathians has a long tradition. White wines such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay or the local varieties Devín and Pálava flourish here. Typical red varieties are Frankovka Modrá (Blue Lemberger), Cabernet Sauvignon, Alibernet, Dunaj and Modrý Portugal. The high quality

of wines from the Small Carpathi-an wine region is demonstrated by the number of international awards achieved in world-wide prestigious wine competitions. The Small Carpath-ian Wine Route joins together local winemakers and service providers of-fering an annual programme of events related to viticulture, wine making and wine tasting.

Painted beautyTypical souvenirs from the Bratislava region are Modra ceramics from potteries dating back to the first half of the 17th century. Traditional ornaments and bright colours have made the majolica of Modra famous beyond the borders of Slovakia. In some small potteries you can also test your skills in some of the production areas.

SHOPPING

Shopping

Farmers’ delicaciesFresh farm products from the region, qual-ity homemade food or handicraft goods can be found on the markets. Have a walk around the open-air market “Miletička” or the indoor Fresh Market, visit the regular Saturday markets in the Old Market Hall or amuse yourself at the more casual Good Market – “Dobrý trh”.

There is nothing that makes your day better than a proper shopping spree: a little something to treat your-self, something as a memory and something as a gift. A souvenir from Bratislava can be a fashion brand from the modern shopping centres, handicraft products from a cosy shop or local gastronomic products from the market.

Old Market Hall

All under one roof Bratislava has shopping centres that are open until late evening hours, sev-en days a week, where you can shop in all kinds of weather. An important part of shopping is a break for a coffee with a cake or an even longer stop to satisfy your thirst and hunger. The shops are closed during Slovak public holidays. Get yourself original giftsWhile strolling through the streets of the city you may come across several small shops that do not offer usual kinds of goods, but mainly focus

on authenticity, local ingredients, traditions and ideas. Also attractive are the fashion showrooms where you can find unique fashion and design pieces from local creative designers. Works of art and historical treasures can be found in antique shops while traditional folk culture products are available in specialized folk art shops. The products made by talented local craftsmen are an original souvenir from your visit. Besides a magnet or a T-shirt you can also purchase wooden or ceramic toys or gifts, corn dollies, a pack of Bratislava rolls, a bottle of Devin currant fruit wine or delicious

wine from the Small Carpathian Wine Region.

On the waves of the DanubeExperience exceptional, atypical, romantic and adventurous accommodation in botels moored on the Danube right in the city centre. Be enchanted by the view and fall asleep to the lapping of the waves.

AccommodationtipsBratislava currently has more than 120 accommodation facilities, from which each visitor or tour operator can choose according to their desired standard, price level, facilities, services, location or view.

More than just overnight stayGetting to know the ancient history and modern face of the city, tasting the local delicacies and exploring the range of tourist possibilities takes some time. Therefore, it is wise to extend your trip and stay overnight in the city centre or in a quite part of town in a luxury chain-brand hotel; friendly small hotel or guesthouse; hostel; in a renovated historic house or in a newly built modern building. The selection of accommodation facilities is wide. Many of them offer great cuisine in their own restaurant and some of them also operate wellness areas. Most of the

hotels will, on demand, prepare special accommodation packages, provide group discounts and reliably arrange various additional services.

International standards with local charm This modern and charming city was dis-covered by the prestigious hotel brands such as Marriott, Radisson Hotel Group, IHG, Accor, Hilton Worldwide, Falken-steiner Hotels & Residences, Lindner, NH Hotels or Vienna House. Bratislava‘s five- and four-star hotels can organise small meetings or grand events and rent out their conference facilities with

full technical equipment and related services.

Book your accommodation directly with the hotels, get advice from the tourist information centre, use the services of local tourist specialists, travel agencies and tour operators or choose from online reservation and information portals.
