A ta question is a special construction in 8nlish. It is a statement followed by a mini?question. The whole sentence is a (ta question(, and the mini?question at the end is called a(question ta(.

A (ta( is somethin small that we add to somethin larer. For example, the little piece of

cloth added to a shirt showin si0e or washin instructions is a ta.

We use ta questions at the end of statements to as! for confirmation. They mean somethinli!e& (Am I riht#( or (;o you aree#( They are very common in 8nlish.

    The basic structure is&

    9

    =ositive statement,

    2now is white, isnt it#

    statements

    5ere are some mixed examples&

4ut you dont really love her, do you# This will wor!, wont it#

Wed never have !nown, would we#

    The weathers bad, isnt it#

)ou wont be late, will you#

    *obody !nows, do they#

*otice that we often use ta questions to as! for information or help, startin with a neative

statement. This is quite a friendly>polite way of ma!in a request. For example, instead ofsayin (Where is the police station#( "not very polite$, or (;o you !now where the policestation is#( "slihtly more polite$, we could say& ()ou wouldnt !now where the police stationis, would you#( 5ere are some more examples&

)ou dont !now of any ood :obs, do you# )ou couldnt help me with my homewor!, could you#

)ou havent ot C'D to lend me, have you#

    4.>.1 Intonation

We can chane the meanin of a ta question with the musical pitch of our voice. With risin

intonation, it sounds li!e a real question. 4ut if our intonation falls, it sounds more li!e a statement

that doesnt require a real answer&

)ou dont !now where my wallet is, do you# > risin real question

Its a beautiful view, isnt it# E fallin not a real question

    4.>.2 ns"ers to tag 'uestions

A 'uestion tag is the (mini?question( at the end. A tag 'uestion is the wholesentence.5ow do we answer a ta question# ften, we :ust say )es or *o. 2ometimes wemay repeat the ta and reverse it "..., do they# )es, they do$. 4e very careful about answerinta questions. In some lanuaes, an oposite system of answerin is used, and non?native8nlish spea!ers sometimes answer in the wron way. This can lead to a lot of confusionG

Answer a ta question accordin to the trut&of the situation. )our answer reflects the real

facts, not "necessarily$ the question. For example, everyone !nows that snow is white. @oo! at

these questions, and the correct answers&

but notice the chane of stress

    when the answerer does not
