From the Pastor

Peace be with you.

As this summer series continues about parts of the Mass, I will cite certain authoritative texts from the Church, and so as a primer to these columns, I shall name some of the main sources here. All of them are available to you in print and online if these things interest you.

Roman Missal - The Roman Missal is the book the priest reads from when he is at the altar. Some of you might think that book is called the “Sacramentary”, but the Church in the United States switched from the Sacramentary to the Roman Missal in 2011. The majority of the Church had been using the Roman Missal, but the English-speaking world had some prayers that were different in the Sacramentary. After 2011 we are now in tune with the rest of the world. As an example, if you remember we used to say “And also with you” after “The Lord be with you”, but most of the world was saying what we now say which is “And with your Spirit”. Something else that changed was the acclamation, “Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again.” This too was unique to the English-speaking world, so it was eliminated in 2011. The Roman Missal has all the prayers for all the special feasts, and it has many instructions. The words spoken are in black ink and the instructions are in red - that is a good thing because it would be awful confusing if by accident the priest read the instruction along with the prayers. It would be quite strange if in the middle of the consecration the priest would say, “the priest extends his hands, and says...” So, the first resource that I will be quoting from are those red ink instructions in the Roman Missal.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal (G.I.R.M.) - The GIRM is a separate instructional book which was last redone in 2003. It gives much more background and instruction for each part of the liturgy. Each paragraph in the book is numbered and so any reference to it simply goes by GIRM # and then the number. It has been translated into all languages, but the paragraph numbers are always the same. Here is an interesting example about the Prayers of the Faithful: “As a rule, the series of intentions is to be: a. For the needs of the Church; b. For public authorities and the salvation of the whole world; c. For those burdened by any kind of difficulty; d. For the local community. Nevertheless, in a particular celebration, such as Confirmation, Marriage, or a Funeral, the series of intentions may reflect more closely the particular occasion.” GIRM 70. Numbers 69 and 71 of the GIRM give additional instruction on these prayers. In our parish, Deacon Al Balestracci has been writing the Prayers of the Faithful for years. You all are probably very familiar with his patterns, and they may sound different than the ones I make up at daily Mass, but we are both following the same basic instruction.

These are just two of the multiple sources, but they are the two most relevant to everything we do, in addition to the Code of Canon Law and the “Liturgical Documents”. As a bishop, I have two other sources for the various things I do: “The Ceremonial of Bishops,” and “The Roman Pontifical”.

So as the summer progresses this series will quote from these various sources. Last Sunday, for example, I quoted from them when I wrote about the Sign of Peace. Hopefully, some of the things I write about will be new to you. It is always good to learn.

Blessings on you and your families

Bishop Mark

Prayer for Voca ons to the Religious Life

Our Father, you call some of your children to band together in community for the public service of your Church and to live the life of voluntary poverty, chas ty and obedience. You need them to remind all of us of our eternal life with you, to show us the goodness of living together in love, and to do spe-cial work in your Church. May this witness be strong and in-spiring. Give many men and women the grace to follow this path in generous sharing, open love for all and faithful service of your Church, for your honor and glory. Amen

"He who receives Communion is made holy and Divinized in soul and body in the same way that water, set over a fire, becomes boiling... Communion works like yeast that has been mixed into dough so that it leavens the whole mass; ...Just as by mel ng two candles together you get one piece of wax, so, I think, one who receives the Flesh and Blood of Jesus is fused together with Him by this Communion, and the soul finds that he is in Christ and Christ is in him," - St. Cyril of Alexandria

RESPECT LIFE

Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of concep on. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a

person- among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. --Catechism of the Catholic Church- 2270

As we slowly return to normalcy at Mass, we are asking parishioners to pray the Rosary from home for the sanc ty of Human Life, from concep on to natural death. Our Blessed Mother Mary has said that the one true weapon against all evil, especially abor on, is the Rosary.

Thank you for your prayers.
