DENTAL VENEERS?

• Veneers offer thefollowing advantages:• They provide a nat-ural tooth appear-ance.• Gum tissue toler-ates porcelain well.• Porcelain veneersare stain resistant.• The color of aporcelain veneer canbe selected such thatit makes dark teethappear whiter.

Veneers offer a con-servative approach tochanging a tooth'scolor and shape-ve-neers generally don'trequire the extensiveshaping prior to theprocedure that crownsdo, yet offer astronger, more es-thetic alternative tobonding.

Regardless of whatcauses unattractiveteeth, dental veneersmay solve most oreven all of your cos-metic dental issues, including:

Worn enamel: Overtime, the thin, hardtranslucent substancecovering your teeth(enamel) may become

worn, dulled and dis-colored. Such wearand discoloration maybe natural or resultfrom a genetic predis-position. However, itoften results from con-suming soft drinks, tea or coffee; smok-ing; using certainmedications, etc.

Wear andtear: Teeth naturallywear down as peopleage. Aged teeth aremore likely to havechips, cracks or agenerally uneven ap-pearance.

Genetics: Certainpeople are born withabnormal spacing be-tween their teeth thatwidens with age.Uneven teeth: Uneventeeth can result fromtooth grinding or gen-eral wear and tear.

Porcelain Veneersand Composite Resin

HOW WELL DOYOU KNOW YOUR

SMILE?The two most com-

mon materials used to

fabricate or createdental veneers arecomposite resin andporcelain. Indirect(created outside ofyour mouth) porcelainveneers and compos-ite veneers are madeby a dental technicianin a  dental laboratory;direct (created directlyon your teeth) com-posite veneers aremade by your dentistduring your appoint-ment at the dental of-fice.Porcelain dental ve-neers are more appro-priate solutions forsevere cases involv-ing dullness, wear, discoloration, exten-sive chipping, crack-ing, spacing oruneven teeth.

Composite bond-ing or just bonding —which refers to directcomposite veneers —is an inexpensive, ef-fective and minimallyinvasive way to re-store and correctsmall chips, cracksand discoloration inthe teeth.

WHEN ARE VENEERS

APPROPRIATE?The removal of any

natural tooth structureis permanent, so cos-metic dentists todayprefer to offer patientsthe most minimally in-vasive options first. Ifyour natural teeth arefunctionally and es-thetically adequate, dental veneers maynot be an appropriatetreatment for you.

However, if youhave severely dull ordiscolored teeth, yourtreatment options mayinclude porcelain den-tal veneers or com-posite veneers.Veneers do have theadded benefits oflongevity and aproven ability to en-hance the appearanceof the mouth, smileand other facial fea-tures that are bettersupported by properlyshaped teeth.

Veneers or Whitening?

Invisalign Express

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FORSHORTER-DURATION INVISALIGN?

Porcelain dental ve-neers or direct com-posite veneers mayrequire the "shaping"or "prepping" of allteeth being treated. Therefore, some cos-metic dentists firstrecommend teethwhitening to peoplewith mildly discoloredteeth who want awhiter and brightersmile because it is theleast invasive cos-metic dentistry option. If crooked teeth oralignment issues areinvolved, whitening

also may be com-bined with orthodontictreatments, includingInvisalign.

CARE OF DENTALVENEERS

Care must be takennot to abuse veneersbecause the thinporcelain shells orcomposite layers canbe damaged or break.

Your dentist may ad-vise you against cer-tain uses or dietarytendencies (such aseating carrots) andmay recommend youwear a protective ap-pliance while sleep-ing, especially if youare a bruxer.

HOW LONG TODENTAL VENEERS

LAST?Veneers generally

last between 5 and 10years. After this time, the veneers wouldneed to be replaced.

Do Dental VeneersRequire SpecialCare?

No. Continue to fol-low good oral hygienepractices includingbrushing and flossingas you normallywould.

Even though porce-lain veneers resiststains, your dentistmay recommend thatyou avoid stain-caus-ing foods and bever-ages (for example, coffee, tea or redwine).

bers on duty 24 hoursa day, seven days aweek, so anyone whocalls gets a personalresponse,” Rubin Ex-plained.

Levitt & Weinsteinis a family managedfirm that personalizesevery step of plan-ning and holding a fu-neral or memorialservice. “When youcome to us, you’renot ordering off amenu like you mightbe with some othercompanies,” Marcsays. “Instead, wecustomize thearrangements andfinal resting placesexactly according towhat the familywishes. For us, it’snever about what’sgood for business orfor the cemetery. It’sabout what the familydesires.”

CUSTOMIZED MONUMENTS

"A stone or monu-ment is an age-oldway of rememberinga loved one, and indi-viduals have manydifferent desires con-cerning them, Rubin

said. “Some peoplewant just the nameand dates of birth anddeath,” he says. “Oth-ers want pictures onthe stones, or poetryor favorite sayings. We can custom de-sign a stone or monu-ment to fit just aboutevery request.”

Rubin recalls onefamily who wanted amonument in theshape of a tennis rac-quet. “The deceasedfamily member wasan avid playerthroughout life, sothat’s how theywanted him to be re-membered,” saidRubin. “We also hada wife who requesteda monument carvedin the shape of a cow-boy hat like the oneher husband alwayswore.”

A final resting placeis also very personal, and Levitt & Wein-stein helps the familyfulfill their desires. One family requesteda location overlookinga lake in a park-likesetting, and stafffound exactly the rightspot. “Another familywanted somethingvery private, so wecreated a gated areathat no one could

enter without permis-sion,” Rubin pointedout.

Another familywanted a privatemausoleum thatwould accommodateeight people. “Wecustom built one ex-actly to order,” hesaid.

Unlike many funeralbusinesses, Levitt &Weinstein is still pri-vately owned ratherthan part of a publiclytraded company. “At atime of grief, peoplewant to deal withsomeone they knowthey can count on,someone who is partof the community,”said Rubin. “Theyhave that with us. Ourdirectors have morethan 100 combinedyears of arranging ex-perience, and be-cause we areprivately owned, wecan make decisionsquickly.”

PRE-PLANNINGCAN HELP

Pre-planning canmake the funeralprocess just a bit eas-ier for those left be-hind. “The individualcan be sure that he orshe will get exactlywhat he or shewishes, and the fam-ily doesn’t have towonder if they aredoing the right thing,”Rubin explained.“Families are under alot of stress at a timeof bereavement, andthere can be dis-agreements and hardfeelings. With pre-planning, there’snone of that, becauseeverything has beentaken care of. Andthere are also finan-cial advantages.”

Although about 90percent of the familiesLevitt-Weinsteinserves choose pre-planning, it can bedifficult to get somepeople to think aboutthe process. “Youplan for a vacation, awedding, a bar mitz-vah or a birthdayparty,” said Rubin.“It’s just as importantto plan a funeral. Whyput the burden ofthose decisions onyour family? Planningeliminates misunder-standing and makes itmuch easier for yourloved ones.”

He continues, “It’sjust another part ofestate planning, likemaking a will. If youmake a plan, you can

arrange to pay for itover a period of time, without interestcharges. When youneed it, your familywill not have to dealwith the additionalburden of expensesas well as the finan-cial burden that isplaced on the familyon their worst day."

Hallandale Beach’selection is over! I amso honored to havewon re election asMayor of this greatcity. I along with ViceMayor AnthonySanders, Bill Julianand Michelle Larzarowill be working withCommissioner AlexLewy to keep ourcommunity progress-ing forward. This wasa long fought cam-paign for all of us andnow is the time totruly get to work.

Walking door todoor visiting condosand just meeting fel-low residents aroundtown, I have had achance to listen toconcerns facing peo-ple day to day. I havealso had to addressmisinformation thatpeople have beenhearing. First andforemost our city is fi-nancially sound. Wehave a balancedbudget and money inreserves. For manyyears our city haswon awards for finan-cial reporting.

Secondly, to datethere is not one par-ticular person in ourgroup being criminallyinvestigated. The IG’soffice for what weknow is auditing theCRA and records in-volving many busi-ness transactions.Within their scopethey can evaluatebusiness practiceswithin all cities. Westill have not receiveda full report fromthem. What we canshare with readers is

that prior to theanonymous complaintwas filed; we havetaken measures toaddress concernsthat were a result ofour own internal auditfrom two years ago.

From west to eastmany residents areconcerned aboutcrime. The biggestissue we have beenfaced with is pocketsof home burglaries. Our city police de-partment continuallyworks both patrol andundercover through-out our city address-ing these crimes andprotecting our neigh-borhoods. Regretfully,we cannot stop allcrime, but working to-gether we can help toprevent it. Our PoliceChief is working aproject called FrontPorch. The first frontporch event was heldin the Northeast sec-tion of our city andthe next will be in theSouthwest in Decem-ber.

The Front Porchprogram is a blockparty where neigh-bors are encouragedto meet neighbors. All

our departmentscome out and shareinformation, but thekey thing is for every-one to know who livewhere. This way wecan work together.

The next issue wastraffic and what canwe do to address it. Ihave written manytimes about the issue. Our city has, and willcontinue, to work withour county and stateagency to improvetraffic.

Another issue hasbeen with condos andtheir regulations. Weas a city cannot regu-late the operation ofcondo boards. Thecity does regulateconstruction andsafety in the condos. The city has steppedin when there isample proof to inves-tigate fraud. The stateregulates condoboards and elections.

I have told residentsthat serve on Boardsto attend the forwardCondo Co-Op Meet-ing at our Local li-brary to find out moreabout condo issue.

The other big issuehas been bus shel-ters. Over the pastyear we have beenworking to installshelters where wecan. The process isvery difficult in a builtout community.Where we do nothave easement wemust work anarrangement with theproperty owners. There is also an issuewith new ADA re-quirements. Thingsare looking up on thebeachside and weare very close to re-placing Hemisphere’ssouth shelter addinga shelter at OceanMarine Yacht Cluband Prince George. I

know it has been abig inconvenience formany, but please re-main patient. It hasbeen frustrating, tosay the least, for usas well as Staff.

Congratulations tothe new Commission! And now we can getrid of all those signs!

The play starts with KenGorman and his wife,Chris Gorman, on thetenth anniversaryparty for Charlie Brock, the Deputy Mayor of NewYork and his wife, Myra.Unfortunately, things arenot going quite asplanned. The kitchen staffhas left, Myra is missingand Charlie has shot him-self in the head, appear-ing to be a suicideattempt. Chris calls Char-lie’s doctor, but beforeshe can tell him what hashappened, Ken advisesher not to tell the doctorwhat has happened, asthe bullet only wentthrough Charlie’s earlobe. Evidently, he hadtaken Valium before theparty and feeling verysleepy, accidentally firedthe gun, fortunately miss-ing his head. As Chrisends her discussion withthe doctor, guests Lennyand Claire Gantz arrive.Lenny and Claire recentlyrecovered from an autoaccident and use thesame doctor whom theycalled in reference to aneck injury, only to ex-change rumors aboutCharlie or Myra having anaffair. More guests arriveand become involved inthe situation, addingsomething new andtwisted to the rest of thegossip.

PUCCINI’S FAMOUSAND POPULAR OPERA“LA BOHÈME STAR-RING AILYN PÉREZ ATBOTH ARSHT ANDBROWARD CENTERS:Florida’s Grand Opera’s72nd Season, one of thebest, starts with Puccini’smost beloved opera, LaBohème. With gloriousarias and thrilling voices, starring Ailyn Pérez, whowas recently featured onthe cover of the Opera

It begins in 1830 Paris, asthe rent comes due, themoney is gone causingthese young artists to sellwhatever articles of valuethey possess.  It tells theheartbreaking story of ro-mance between Mimi andRodolfo, the profound lustfor Mimi by the CountPaul, which is totally one-sided, causing friction be-tween Mimi and Rodolfo.Mimi contracts tuberculo-sis, becoming very ill andis deeply hurt and suffersover Rudolfo’s lack oftrust in her. She leaveshim a note of farewell andfinally passes on leavingRodolfo unable to copewithout her, they are bothdoomed and defeated bythe worst villian, poverty.

and small businessgrowth that Mayor JoyCooper has preachedfrom the time I met her.

Hallandale Beach resi-dents may have goneinto the election withtheir collective chestsout - proclaiming changewould be good - butwhen they had those sixpages in their hands andtruly looked at how farthis city has come - thiswasn't a choice at all.

While people continueto tell me how poorly thiscity is run, I never re-spond. This communityneeds plenty of help inmany areas, and withRenee Chrichton inplace as the City Man-ager, this could be thebest time to live andwork in HallandaleBeach.

I am not blind to thosewho BLOG and takeshots at many of the cityofficials. To be honest, many things that havebeen written and saidare true, but there areways to handle situa-tions. Berating fellowcommissioners and themayor and running to themedia only puts this cityfurther in the hole. Han-dle things within the"family". Communicationreally has been a prob-lem the past five years, and it has to change.

There is nothing wrongwith being an activist. Ifyou are a taxpayer, youdeserve to know every-thing, and I agree with it.What has happened inthis city over the pastdecade, is it's being split, and then you have prob-lems that get bigger andbigger - to the pointwhere nobody wanted toattend or watch a com-mission meeting. Theline of communicationfrom City Hall must bewide open or you willcontinue to have prob-lems. There is no otherway!

Having Mayor Cooperback in office is only apart of what appears tobe one of the best groupof elected officials wehave had in a long time, and I have proudly satthrough 11 Mayors, 70Commissioners and 9City Managers. Keep inmind that a commissionis a like team. Eachcommissioner/mayorbring something differentto the table. That part ofthe team has been miss-ing, and I expect it willreturn over the next fewyears.

Bill Julian has been ano-brainer to me fromthe first time I saw himraise money and deliverthings to residents dur-ing heavy rains andflooding. He nevershould have been out ofoffice in the first place -because he representsthe city. While there arealways things he canwork on, he is alwaysthe first to arrive and lastto leave. A valuablemember of any team.

Anthony Sanders, while not being a savvypolitician the past fewyears, appears to be thekind of team player thatany commission needs.Again, like Julian, beingprogressive and gettingout in the community, ad-dressing the year-roundneeds and concerns ofthe residents, has beenvery important to thegrowth.

Michele Lazarow, I be-lieve will be one of thosefresh, young faces thecity has been looking for. While she may be over-whelmed from a politicalstandpoint, and that'sonly natural when youhaven't had the experi-ence, her businesssense and knowledge of

the city she grew up inwill certainly be a hugeasset. She is the type ofperson who will eventu-ally embrace growththroughout the entirecity.

HOLLYWOODFrom the early voting

feel in this community, change was not reallythe total answer. Not thisyear. Not in this econ-omy.While Mayor Peter

Bober and his commis-sion came under firefrom residents severetimes over the past fewyears, it wasn't enoughas those who went to thepolls did so with the ideathat this was too shakyof an economy to playaround with.

Bober overwhelmedCliff Germano, while Pa-tricia Asseff (District 1),Dick Blattner (District 4)and Linda Sherwood(District 6) all were re-elected. NewcomersPeter Hernandez (Dis-trict 2), Traci Callari (Dis-trict 3) and KevinBiederman (District 5)shook up the city. Callariupset favorite HeidiO'Sheehan.

DANIA BEACHThe one thing that can

be said for this city isthat change is rarelymade. That was provenout once again on Tues-day as Walter Duke, Al-bert Jones and veteranMac McElyea were allvoted back in.

Dania Beach hadseven candidates vyingfor office.

Chronic pain is debili-tating, and quickly erodesquality of life. Now, a newmedical technology al-lows many patients suf-fering from back or jointpain to avoid surgery andreturn to the activities andlifestyles they enjoyedpreviously.

Map PEMF Therapy isa painless noninvasivemethod of delivering a pi-oneering new branch ofan invisible treatment thatprovides a revolutionarycure you were waiting for.

A rapid accelerationwhich recovers and re-stores a pain-freelifestyle. The treatmentworks on all joint prob-lems, tears, sprains, frac-tures and repetitiveinjuries such as carpeltunnel, arthritis, and os-teoarthritis. What’s trulyamazing about MAPPEMF Therapy is that itactually regrows cartilageas well as increases bonedensity. It has been usedby thousands of people, including many profes-sional athletes. MAP PEMF Therapy

can help patients avoidhip and knee replace-ments and provide rapidalternative recovery meth-ods. It is now available atthe WellCo Health andWellness Center in Hal-landale Beach.

HOW IT WORKSIf you have ever held

two magnets in yourhands, tried to force themtogether, and felt a resist-ance between them, thenyou have experienced amagnetic field. PEMFstands for Pulsed Electro-

Magnetic Fields, whichare widely used thesedays to improve circula-tion and cell metabolism. The body can become ac-customed to nonmoving(or static) magnetic fields, which are generally un-able to deeply penetratethe body. A pulsed elec-tromagnetic field, how-ever, is quite dynamic, isable to penetrate all theway through the body, and creates a cascade ofeffects within the body. The MAP PEMF Therapyuses moving magnetscreating an energy wave

which changes the wayyour body copes withpain. The electrical mag-nets affect the nerve cellswhich are electrical cellsand the magnetic fieldsaffect how the nerves fireand quiet them downwithout using drugs in-creasing circulation in thearea and aid the healing.Inside the MAP there areelectrical coils, and whenelectricity passes throughthere it creates a mag-netic field that movesthrough the body whisper-ing at 75 trillion cells inyour body going deep into

your body where sportscreams and heating padscould never reach suchas your spine. The mag-netic field turns on acti-vating ions and chargedparticles bringing in nutri-ents influencing thingslike blood cell supplyopening up blood cells. You don’t just feel betteryou are better.

The cost is far less thansurgery, and patientsavoid the long recoverytimes and possible sideeffects associated withsurgery.

Avoid Pain and Joint Replacement Surgery WithRevolutionary Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrentTreatment - No Drugs, No Surgery, No Pain

Patient Benefits:• Greatly Speed the healing process • Reduce or eradicate Chronic and Acute Pain • Chronic and Acute Low Back, Hip, Knee and NeckPain or deficiencies • Avoid Joint Replacement Surgery • Orthopedic Injuries • Fi-bromyalgia • Myofascial Pain • Tendon and Ligament repair • Reduces swelling andinflammation • Releases muscle trigger points • Improves soft tissue regenerationElectro Muscle Stimulation changes muscle tissue, softens or eradicates scar tis-

sue, and increases circulation with the effect of removing long stored waste prod-ucts and increasing cellular metabolism. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology uses micro impulses, which induceneuropeptides secretion by primarily C nerve fibers that have profound and wide-ranging effects, triggering complex regulative chains and cascades.Multiple biochemical pathways utilizing many types of neuro-mediators, hor-

mones, and cytokines are involved. Although peptide half-life in body fluids is rela-tively short, other mediators in the cascades survive for many hours. Someregulatory peptides act on genomic activity to alter gene expression and change bio-chemical synthesis. Our device’s electrical signals can reprogram tissues locked intochronic vegetative and dysfunctional states by inducing bolus synthesis of regulatorypeptides (RP).On a neurological level, widely dispersed un-meylienated C-fibers compromising 85 percent of all nerve fibers are effected locally by

the Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology signal. C-fibers are responsible for slow diffuse pain signaling and are also neuro-secre-tory. Neuropeptides (NPs) are secreted into the surrounding tissue milieu by their exocytosis through vesicle membrane fusion with thecell membrane similar to neuro-transmitter secretion. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology impulses also are relayed through afferent neural pathways to the CNS and give rise to

various 1) Segmental spinal reflexes by efferent signals sent from the cord to organs associated with that segment or back to the local tissue

receiving the impulse.2) Systemic reactions such as endorphin induction by efferent signals descending from the cortical and subcortical areas of the brain

i.e. pain reduction. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology impulses have a direct effect on blood perfusion. Clinically observable and well-de-

fined increases in tissue perfusion at the treated areas are due to neuropeptide-induced vasodilatation, particularly Substance P. Acombination of device-induced axon reflexes also releases other vaso-active substances such as kinins, prostaglandins, cytokines, andnitric oxide. The end result is that blood flow to a treated area is significantly increased. Other neuropeptides and endocrine secretionsreleased by device’s impulses mediate inflammation. Complement fixation and tissue injuries due to immune aggression are sup-pressed, and cellular immunity is enhanced by macrophage proliferation, activation, chemotaxis, and clearance of extracellular debris. The Pro Biofeedback MicroCurrent Technology has redefined existing technology with novel waveforms, unique circuitry, and clean

signaling. Signaling is focused and intensified for narrow applications or is expanded with unique signaling combinations and frequencyranges for increased therapeutic flexibility. Compared with the earlier Russian electro-stimulation devices, The Pro Biofeedback Mi-

croCurrent Technology generates clean and more precisely defined wave forms andpossesses both newer (patent pending) settings that expand clinical versatility andvastly improved operational reliability.

The Pro Bio-feedback technology is proven to be convenient, safe, and effectiveand has been cleared by the FDA and other governing bodies for pain relief. If you are sick and tired of dealing with the pain, range of motion limitations take

advantage of the opportunity you have and contact Wellco Wellness for more in-formation. You’ve literally got nothing to lose but the pain!

(BPT) - You mightthink that by the time theholidays arrive, allergyseason is long gone. However, for millions ofallergy sufferers, the re-ality is that allergens stillabound. From pet dan-der to volatile organiccompounds, indoor aller-gens can cause discom-fort and health issues asbothersome as whenpollen is in season. The holidays can be par-ticularly difficult, as wevisit family and friendsand welcome guests -and the allergens theybring with them - into ourhomes.

'The holidays can pres-ent a variety of chal-lenges for asthma andallergy patients,' says Dr.Cliff Bassett, an ambas-sador for the Asthma andAllergy Foundation ofAmerica (AAFA). 'Ourenvironment changes inmany ways during theholidays, from havingnew people in our homesto bringing in potential ir-ritants like pine trees anddusty old holiday decora-tions.'

AAFA offers some ad-vice for helping minimizeallergy and asthma trig-

gers in your home thisholiday season:* Most people store holi-day decorations in attics, basements or garagesand they can pick updust, mold and other irri-tants while in storage.Thoroughly clean allstored decorations be-fore using them in yourhome. If one or more ofthese irritants is a triggerfor you, wear a maskwhile cleaning. Whenyou're done with the dec-orations this year, cleanthem again before youseal them in plastic bagsand store them in airtightcontainers.* If you or a loved onesuffers from a tree orpollen allergy, artificialtrees can be a less irri-tating substitute, pro-vided you opt for onethat's not coated withsprayed-on 'snow.' If youwill be using a live tree, you can reduce moldproblems by thoroughlywiping the trunk with asolution of lukewarmwater and diluted bleach(one part bleach to 20parts water). Before youbring the tree inside, usea leaf blower to removepollen grains.

* Everyone loves thesmell of the holiday, butscent-creating home ac-cessories can be irri-tants. Limit the use of airfresheners like candles, oils and potpourri. If youreally want to fill yourhome with a holidayaroma during a specialoccasion, try bakingusing naturally fragrantingredients like vanilla, cinnamon or citrus.* A crackling fire can cre-ate a warm, festive moodfor holiday gatherings. Tominimize potential irrita-tion, don't use wood-burning stoves orfireplaces at all. If youuse a gas fireplace, check vents and use se-cured doors, rather thanscreens, to reducesmoke entering the

room.* When giving a gift tosomeone with allergiesor asthma, keep their po-tential triggers in mind. For example, some chil-dren with asthma may beirritated by the materialscommonly used instuffed animals. Look forproducts that do nothave sensitizing or aller-genic chemicals such asformaldehyde. You canalso find a list of allergyand asthma-friendlyproducts on the AAFAwebsite,www.aafa.org/certified.* When welcomingguests who have aller-gies or asthma, take pre-ventative steps to helpminimize irritants. Giveyour home a thoroughcleaning (you probablywould anyway becauseof the holiday) usingcleaning products thatcan reduce allergens

from hard surfaces, butthat do not use harsh, potentially irritatingchemicals. Vacuumusing a high quality vac-uum cleaner with aHEPA filter to reduce thechance of disturbing dustinto the air. Don't forgetto change your furnacefilters as well. Use ahigh efficiency filter that

can last up to 90 days.No one wants to expe-

rience an allergy orasthma attack during theholiday season. By tak-ing steps to minimize irri-tants in your homeenvironment, you canhelp ensure that every-one's eyes are brightwith holiday joy - and notbecause of allergies.

MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTERLAUNCHES LUNG SCREENING PROGRAM90% of Lung Cancers are Curable With Early DetectionLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and

women – responsible formore deaths each yearthan breast, colon andprostate cancer com-bined. In the U.S., to-bacco use still accountsfor 87 percent of lungcancer deaths; and, smokers are up to 30times more likely to de-velop lung cancer thannon-smokers are. How-ever, when diagnosedearly, more than 90 per-cent of lung cancers canbe cured with promptsurgical intervention. Inan effort to save morelives from this disease,Mount Sinai Medical Center has developed a lung cancer screening pro-gram that aims to diagnose lung cancer in its earliest possible stage.

Lung cancer in its early stages has no symptoms. Hence, more than 85percent of men and women diagnosed with lung cancer are found to be in alate stage of the disease with very little chance of being cured. However,low-dose CT lung cancer screenings, available at Mount Sinai, offersgreater hope for survival through early detection, especially for high-risk pa-tients. A Computerized Tomography (CT) lung scan is an efficient and pain-less exam. It combines special X-ray equipment with sophisticatedcomputers to produce multiple images of your lungs, taken from differentangles. Mount Sinai is able to provide a low-dose lung screening because,as a Radiation Safety Provider, we have instituted safeguards to ensure thesmallest amount of radiation dose exposure to patients undergoing testing. These safeguards help eliminate duplicate studies in the future and ensurethat you receive the information you need with the least amount of expo-sure.

Recently, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Task Force forLung Cancer Screening and Surveillance released clinical guidelines rec-ommending annual lung cancer screenings with low-dose CT for smokersand former smokers age 55 to 79 with a 30 pack-year history, or age 50with a 20 pack-year history and additional risk factors.

“Based on these new guidelines, we are pleased to announce that MountSinai Medical Center’s multidisciplinary lung cancer screening program isan opportunity to offer high-risk patients a greater chance of surviving lungcancer,” said Dr. Roy F. Williams, thoracic surgeon with Mount Sinai’s Divi-sion of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Dr. Williams is one of only a few surgeons in the nation with experience inminimally invasive lung surgery, and Mount Sinai is one of a select few hos-pitals in South Florida offering robotic lung surgery, which requires less timein the hospital and offers a quicker recovery. Mount Sinai’s multidisciplinaryapproach leads to greater accuracy of diagnosis, consistent clinical results, decreased time to treatment and higher patient satisfaction.

To learn more about Mount Sinai’s lung screening program, or toschedule an appointment, please call 305-535-3434 or visit

Resourceful Consumer Trends You Should Know About(NewsUSA) - When the economy nosedived, and companies had reason to be scared, a few businesses got resourceful.Low incomes and record job losses pushed consumers toward trends like buying in bulk and using group discount websites. And where there was

demand, supply soon followed. In came the success of wholesalers like Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's. But warehouse clubs weren't the only stores seeing growth in bulk sales.

Farmers markets, co-ops and natural food stores observed more supersized shopping. Whole Foods said bulk food purchases were growing by ap-proximately 25 percent every year. That wasn't the only buying trend to emerge, however."The Groupon following led to an explosion of similar sites, like LivingSocial and Dealfind, not to mention all of the city-specific ones," says Joe

Kalfa, the leader of a new movement of group buying called All Our Power."You can buy virtually any commodity in bulk and get all kinds of group discounts on spas, restaurants and vacations galore, but what about monthly

expenses like car insurance, gas and health care? It seems to me like there's room for some improvement," adds Kalfa.Well, maybe there is.According to Time magazine's Moneyland, warehouse club members can save 25 to 35 percent on their food budget. Shoppers who forego packag-

ing altogether and buy food from bins or dispensers save anywhere from 30 to 90 percent over prepackaged products.Imagine those types of savings applied to insurance policies, gas prices, medical bills, cell phone plans and more. All Our Power, which seeks to rally 10 million members and secure membership discounts from all kinds of service providers and retailers, could be

the next group-buying trend to take flight.A buzz has already formed around the young movement as consumers worldwide realize the potential benefits of a free membership with access to

serious negotiating power. Are you tired of paying too much for car insurance or gas? You're not the only one. Sign up and learn more about your buying

power at www.allourpower.com. Or, see what others are saying on Twitter @ AllOurPower.

WHAT KIND OFSYMPTOMS DOVARICOSE VEINS

CAUSE?Small spider veins

cause symptoms inabout 50% of people. These include restlessleg syndrome, nightcramps, heavy or tiredlegs or a burning, creepy, crawly oraching feeling in thelegs. With more se-vere vein disease peo-ple can developincreasing leg pain, swelling, discoloration, infections, bleedingfrom the veins, bloodclots or leg ulcers saysSusan B. Fox, D.O.,RSPVI, FSVM.

WHY DOES ITSEEM LIKE EVERY-ONE HAS VARI-COSE VEINS?

In one US healthsurvey, varicose veinswere found to be the7th most common rea-son for medical refer-ral. It is estimated thatup to 80 million Ameri-cans are affected byvenous disease. Ap-proximately, 25% ofwomen and 15% ofmen have some de-gree of vein problems. This increases so thatby age sixty, 72% ofwomen and 40% ofmen are affected byvein disease.

ARE VARICOSEVEINS

DANGEROUS?Varicose Veins are

not usually dangerous. However, large, ropeysuperficial veins cansometimes lead tosluggish blood flowthat may make a per-son more likely to de-velop a blood clot. Ifthis is in the deep ve-nous system, it can bedangerous and bloodthinners need to bestarted.

WHY DO SOMEPEOPLE GET

VARICOSE VEINSAND OTHERS DO

NOT?There is no conclu-

sive answer to this ex-cept that if yourparents or relativeshave varicose veinsyou may be more in-clined to developthem. Contributing fac-tors appear to be hor-monal changes, pregnancy, weight gainand occupationswhere you are on yourfeet all day.

WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS?No one knows ex-

actly but it appearsthat two factors con-tribute to the develop-ment of varicose veins. One is that the veinwalls weaken and thesecond is that thevalves inside the veinsdon’t work properly. When the valves donot work properly theflow of blood is dis-rupted which leads toa higher pressure in-

side the vein and veinproblems ensue.

IS THERE SOMETHING THAT ICAN DO TO HELPMY VARICOSEVEINS?

Try to maintain anideal weight and exer-cise regularly. Calfpumping exerciseshelp the veins circulatethe blood. The main-stay of conservativetherapy is wearingcompression hose. These are not thesame as store-boughtsupport hose. Yourdoctor should writeyou a prescription formedical-grade com-pression hose that youshould wear from theminute you get up untilyou lie down to go tosleep.

CAN I TAKE SOMETHING TOMAKE THEM GO

AWAY?Some reports state

that herbal medica-tions may help de-crease leg swellingand aching. These in-clude Bilberry fruit ex-tract, Horse chestnutseed extract , Ruto-sides and Pycnogenol.Long- term, well - con-trolled trials are lackingon many of these sup-plements.

WHAT CAN I DO TOGET RID OF MY SPIDER VEINS?

The treatment ofchoice for small-medium sized veins issclerotherapy. Scle-rotherapy involves in-jecting a solution intothe veins causing themto seal shut and disap-pear over time. It feelssimilar to a bug bite.Sclerotherapy usuallytakes a few treatmentsessions and is viewedas cosmetic by mostinsurance plans.

WHAT IF MY VEINSARE TOO LARGETO INJECT?

If the veins are largerthan 3 to 4mm theymay need to be re-moved through tiny in-cisions. Thisprocedure is calledAmbulatory Phlebec-tomy. It is performed inthe office under localanesthetic and leavesvirtually no scarringand has almost nodown time.

Another procedure totreat large veins isfoam sclerotherapy. This procedure is per-formed by making thesclerosant into a foamand injecting it into theveins. This works rela-tively well on mediumto large veins and canbe performed under ul-trasound guidance forbetter accuracy.

HOW DO I KNOW IFI NEED SURGERYTO GET RID OF MY

VEINS?You should see a

vein or vascular spe-cialist says Susan B.Fox, D.O., RSPVI,FSVM. They may needto order special teststo help determine ifyou have abnormal ve-nous blood flow. Thesetests are non-invasiveand can be done in theoffice in less than anhour and are usuallycovered by insurance.

WHAT OPTIONS DOI HAVE TO TREATMY LARGE VEINS BESIDES VEIN

SURGERY OR VEINSTRIPPING?

There are newer lessinvasive treatment op-tions that are coveredby Medicare and manyinsurance plans. Twoprocedures that areFDA approved includeVNUS Closure wherea radiofrequencycatheter is placed in-side the vein and En-

dovenous Laser ther-apy where a lasercatheter is placed in-side the vein to seal itshut. Endovenouslaser procedure is usu-ally done in the doc-tor's office under localanesthesia.  It takesless than 30 minutesand has minimal to noscarring. The newestminimally invasive pro-cedure is called Clar-ivein.  It is FDAapproved and requiresno incisions to closethe veins.  The patientonly receives one ortwo injections oflocal anesthetic.  Awire is placed insidethe vein which rotatesaround and a scleros-ing solution is injectedinto the vein whichcoats and closes thevein.  This is calledmechanico- chemicalablation.  It is per-formed in the office inless than 15 minutes.People can return towork later that day orthe next. There is onlyminimal discomfortafter the procedure.Walking is encouragedeven immediately afterthe procedure. In onesurvey of patients fol-lowing the endolaserprocedure, 99.8% ofpatients said that weresatisfied with treatmentand would refer afriend for the proce-dure.

WHY TREAT MYVEINS? DON'T

THEY JUST COMEBACK?

When the veins aretreated by vein ex-perts, the results areexcellent. Though noguarantees can bemade that you will bevaricose vein free for-ever, most patients arethrilled that theytreated their veins andwish they had done itearlier. With the newertreatment methods

there is less downtime, less complica-tions, less scarring andvery little recurrencecompared to conven-tional vein strippingand surgery.

While Varicose Veins are not usually dangerous, large, ropey superficialveins can sometimes lead to sluggish blood flow that may make a personmore likely to develop a blood clot. Susan B. Fox, D.O., RSPVI, FSVM. looks

over one of her patients.

BEFORE

AFTER

No one knows exactly but it appears that twofactors contribute to the development of vari-cose veins. One is that the vein walls weakenand the second is that the valves inside the

veins don’t work properly. When the valves donot work properly the flow of blood is disruptedwhich leads to a higher pressure inside the

vein and vein problems ensue.

(BPT) - Thanksgivingand Christmas mealsoften incorporate a lot oftraditional foods and fla-vors, which as a host, may become a bit bor-ing. But when you havefriends and family visit-ing for several days, there are plenty of op-portunities to shine withnew flavors and inter-esting meals. As a host, embrace allof the meals you'll beserving, which providesyou with an excellentchance to show off yourculinary skills. To helpyou plan the menus andentertain your guestsduring their entire visit,Gaby Dalkin of What'sGaby Cooking and Lind-say and Taylor Landis ofLove and Olive Oil haverecipes and tips tomake everything mucheasier.

'I think like most peo-ple, I'm not just enter-taining on Thanksgivingand Christmas Day, butam making meals formy family on the dayssurrounding the holiday,'Dalkin says. 'These aretimes when I feel likecan stray from the ordi-nary holiday traditionand experiment with myrecipes.'

Here are some tips tomake your holidays a

memorable time:* Assess your ingredi-ents - including yourspice cabinet - to en-sure all holiday essen-tials like cinnamon, cloves, vanilla bean, nutmeg, flour and sugarare available for allrecipes.* Choose recipes aheadof time so you know thatyou have all ingredientsavailable. Purchase thedry goods you need atleast a week ahead tohelp reduce stress. Then purchase perish-able items like meat anddairy products a day ortwo before guests arriveso you have everythingready to go.* Make non-perishablesnacks ahead of timeand store them in con-tainers to bring outwhen needed. Try thisrecipe from Dalkin tokeep your guestshappy:

SWEET AND SPICEROASTED NUTS

1 cup raw wholecashews 1 cup raw whole walnuts 1 cup raw whole almonds 1 cup raw pepitas 1 egg white 1 teaspoon water 1/2 cup white sugar 1/4 teaspoon Spice Is-lands Sea Salt

1/2 teaspoon Spice Is-lands Cayenne Pepper 1/2 teaspoon Spice Is-lands Ground Saigon Cin-namon

Preheat the oven to350 F. Line a bakingsheet with a piece ofparchment paper andset it aside. Combinethe cashews, walnuts, almonds and pepitas ina large bowl and toss tocombine. Drizzle thewet mixture over thenuts and toss to com-bine, making sure theyare evenly coated.Transfer the nuts to thebaking sheet andspread in an even layer.Roast for 30 minutes,

stirring occasionally. Re-move the nuts from theoven and separate thenuts as they cool. Storein an airtight containerand serve as needed.* Add a surprising andspecial touch to cock-tails. Slice a Spice Is-lands Bourbon VanillaBean in half and drop itinto your bottle of vodkaor bourbon several daysprior to the arrival ofyour guests. It will add adelicious and warm fla-vor to all cocktails.

But don't forget aboutthe children at yourgathering either.

'I always create inter-esting cocktails for myseasonal entertaining, and this year, I'm mak-ing something specialfor the kids,' says Lind-say Landis. Her holiday

drink gives a festive gin-gerbread twist to theclassic root beer float.Instead of using rootbeer with ice cream, she instead uses vanillacream soda and spicedmolasses syrup to makethe drink taste just likeliquid gingerbread.* Finally, chooserecipes that can be eas-ily made in large quanti-ties.
