SANTA CLARA, CALI F., October 12 , 201 1The latest mobile PC forecast from DisplaySearchsQuarterly Mobile PC Shipm ent and Forecast Report highlights the impact of changing regionaldynamics and the impact on the notebook and tablet PC businesses. Strong growth in shipmentsof notebook PCs into emerging markets will result in these markets passing mature markets in2011. At the same time, shipments of tablet PCs into mature markets continue to lead emergingmarkets and are expected to throughout the forecast period. As a result, mobile PC shipments(including notebook, mini-note and tablet PCs) are expected to grow at double-digit rates through2017, at which time shipments will reach nearly 800 million units, up from 277 million in 2011.

The main assumptions behind the latest forecast are that as PC penetration rates rise inemerging markets, first time buyers are going to look to notebooks for the performance. At thesame time, the convenience of tablet PCs with their instant-on, long battery life and portable formfactors will be a welcome platform for existing PC owners. Worldwide shipments of tablet PCs areforecast to reach 367 million units by 2017, which would be 46% of the mobile PC shipments.

These regional dynamics are leading to a significant changing of the guard as emerging marketswill increasingly influence worldwide mobile PC trends, said Richard Shim, senior analyst atDisplaySearch.

The latest Quarter ly Mobile PC Shipm ent and Forecast Report projects 2011 mobile PC shipments toincrease 27% Y/Y, to 276.9 million units. Notebook PC Y/Y shipment growth is forecast to be 13%,reaching 188 million units in 2011. Tablet PC shipments are forecast to grow 213% Y/Y, to 64million units.
