Message from Mrs. Ziric and Ms. Penney: I would like to welcome Ms. Penney as interim Principal for the month of February. Ms. Penney is a retired Principal with a wide range of experience in the HWDSB. Ms. Penney looks forward to supporting the community as Term 2 begins. Thank you to all parents for your continued support at Memorial City. Lost and Found We have a number of items in our Lost and Found box located in the hallway outside of the office. It is important for students to check for things that they have lost. Space in the lost and found is limited and items left at the end of each month will be donated to charity. Parents, please feel free to come in and have a look. Back Playgound Area: The back playground area continues to remain wet and muddy as snow melts. We are reminding students daily to stay out of puddles and wet areas. You may want to pack extra socks in your childs backpack as we have noticed students requesting to call home for dry socks. 1175 Main Street East Hamilton, ON L8M 1P3 Mrs. Jacqueline Johnson - Principal Mrs. Fatima Ziric - Vice-Principal February 2020 CONTACT Information: Phone: 905-549-3095 Fax: 905-549-3105 Email: [email protected] Webpage: http://hwdsb.on.ca/memorialcity Twitter: http://twitter.com/Memorial_City Mrs. Johnson: [email protected] Mrs. Ziric: [email protected] 2019-2020 Daily Bell Times Playground Supervision 8:30-8:45 Entry 8:45 Period 1 8:45-9:25 Period 2 9:25-10:25 Nutrition Break 1 10:25-11:05 Period 3 11:05-11:55 Period 4 11:55-12:45 Nutrition Break 2 12:45-1:25 Period 5 1:25-2:25 Period 6 2:25-3:05 Dismissal 3:05 Playground Supervision 3:05-3:20 Important Dates: February 14th : Valentines day/ Grade 8 Grad Photos February 17th: Family Day NO School February 19th: In School Meetings February 28th: McMaster Science in FDK Coming Soon: March 16th-March 20th—March Break NO SCHOOL To All Parents Regarding pick up & drop off: We kindly ask all parents and guardians to please pick up and drop off students on Dunsmure Road. SAFE ARRIVALS PROGRAM (ATTENDANCE, LUNCH, LEAVING EARLY)

ATTENDANCE: LATE ARRIVALS: Late arrivals, in both the morning and afternoon, need to be avoided whenever possible. When a student arrives late they miss important annoucements, valuable instruction and disrupt the class mid-lesson. If your child is going to be late, please call the school office before school. Students arriving late after 8:50 am or 1:30 pm must use the video/intercom system to enter the school through the parking lot door and report directly to the School Office for a Late Slip. Teachers will not admit students to class late without an admit/late slip. LEAVING EARLY: If it is necessary for your child to be excused early from school, parents are asked to: Write a note to their child’s teacher (preferably in their agenda) stating the time their child will

need to be dismissed, and Come into the office to meet their child and confirm with the Office Administrators that their child

is leaving in their care. Students will not be dismissed to meet their parents in the parking lot as this area is not supervised. Again we recognize the inconvenience of this practise for parents, but know that you appreciate the extra care that is being taken to keep your child safe.

LOST & FOUND— Our lost and found box is located outside of the main office. Please remember to put your child’s name or initials in-

side all items such as shoes, jackets, sweaters and backpacks. Space in the lost and found is limited. Items left at the end of each

month will be donated to charity.

There are both students and staff at Memorial who have allergies to nuts and products containing nuts. Some of these allergies are serious enough to be life threatening. These severe allergies can lead to anaphylaxis. To make the school environment as safe as possible, we ask that no products containing nuts be sent to the school. This in-cludes not only snacks to be shared with the whole class, but also private snacks and lunches. Please read the la-bels of store bought products as many contain nuts as ingredients or in trace amounts. We do not claim that Memorial is a “nut free” school, as we cannot guarantee that products never enter the building. We do however call ourselves a “nut safe” school as we endeavour to monitor all food in the building.

MEMORIAL IS A NUT SAFE SCHOOL

DOGS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

Just a reminder that dogs are not permitted on school property between 8 a.m. & 4 p.m. Thank you for continuing to “stoop & scoop” when walking your dogs at the school at other times. Please refrain from using the “fenced in” play areas.

Keeping Memorial City School Safe: Fire Drills, Lockdowns, Shelter in Place, Hold and Secure and Bomb Threat Protocols

Our safety protocols are like insurance. We have them hoping that they will never be necessary, but we know that in an emergency we have practiced and implemented all procedures to keep our community safe. Each school has been directed by the school board to develop protocols which are appropriate for each school building. Every school is different in layout and configuration, thus each school’s protocol will be designed to meet its specific situation. The key components of the Memorial plan include: Regular fire drills, lockdown, hold and secure, bomb threat and shelter in place drills to practice safe proce-

dures in the event of an emergency. Upon hearing the each different announcement, teachers will assure student safety through a variety of

measures. When an emergency situation is initiated, the police and school board security personnel will be called immedi-

ately All of our drills end when the staff and/ or police deem the school and school grounds safe for all students and

staff. As a parent of a student at Memorial the following information may be helpful: If you are volunteering or visiting the school when a drill bell sounds, follow the instructions of the nearest

teacher. If no teacher is present, proceed to the nearest room and close the door behind you or evacuate the building.

School Messenger/Safe Arrival for Families Safe arrival is an absence management system that improves student safety and makes it easy for you to let the school know about your child’s absence. You are asked to report your child’s absence in advance whenever possible using one of these convenient methods: School Messenger App (free) 1. Provide your email address to the school. 2. Get the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca). 3. Tap Sign Up to create your account. 4. Select Attendance from the menu, and then select Report an Absence. Web and Mobile Web: go.schoolmessenger.ca 1. Provide your email address to the school. 2. Go to the website 3. Click Sign Up to create your account. 4. Select Attendance from the menu, then select Report an Absence. Interactive Toll-free Phone 1. Call the toll-free, interactive telephone system 1-844-506-4350. 2. Follow the instructions to report an absence. Absences can be reported in advance: 24 hours/day 7 days a week For any school day in the school term Up to the cut-off time on the day of the absence Whenever an absence is reported or updated, you will receive a confirmation notice by email and/or text message (assuming you have provided your contact information to the school). If you don’t report your child’s absence in advance, the automated notification system will try to contact you (using your communication preferences if you have set them up in the SchoolMessenger app). This may include push notifications to the app, email, SMS text messages, or phone calls. You will be asked to provide the reason for your child’s absence immediately. You may do so using the phone line, website or mobile app. If an absence is not explained within approximately 20 minutes of the time that the school starts the notifi-cation process, school staff will follow up to make sure that your child is safe. If you try to explain an ab-sence using SafeArrival, but are then told that it is past the cut-off time, please contact the school directly. If you don’t want to receive notifications when your child is absent, be sure to report your child’s absence in advance. If you do receive notifications of your child’s absence, be sure to provide the reason as quickly as possible, using one of the methods listed above or during the phone call notification itself.
