April 2019 FPU
Over the last few years, here at St. Paul’s we have hosted “Financial Peace University.” This is a course designed by Dave Ramsey to help people “start winning with money.” In the fall, Pastor Dave and I alternated attending the sessions in the course. Prior to attending I had a working knowledge of what was included. I was aware of and we were already implementing the debt pay down method that is taught. But, we found that it was helpful to have the lessons and the resources offered in helping us as we move forward. We live in a world where our finances can feel overwhelming. No matter the stage of life people are in, there seems to be some sort of financial worry or struggle. What this course offers is a way to break down the worry and struggle by offering baby steps to work through in order to have lower stress in managing finances. Now, these steps are called “baby steps,” but they may take some time to work through them depending on your own situation. But, with that time in-vested, there is progress made! Taking this course can be helpful at any life stage. Teens can take the course to gain tips and tricks to limit the amount of debt accumulated from the very start. Young couples can learn a lot and use the tools learned in setting up their financial situation. Those in the midst of their working years can learn how to make a current situation better as well as setting up for the future and eventual retirement. Even later in life these tools are helpful in ensuring things are tended to and a lasting legacy can be left. Some things that are covered include learning how to set a budget; paying down debts; saving money; getting ready for retirement; preparing to assist children in paying for college; in-surance- including the types and amount needed; and charitable giving. There is also information on how to live without a credit card, and how to make large purchases in responsible ways. During each of the 9 classes there is a time to check in, review the homework from the previous class and ask questions. There is a video to watch and during the video you go through the workbook and therefore a note taking method is built in! There are explanations for why Dave Ramsey suggests these methods. There are stories from his life and from his experience in assist-ing others with their financial journey. And what I found most helpful are the practical resources offered. There are budget sheets to help with the day to day information as well as to help with looking at the bigger financial picture. There are online resources which can also be used, and of course, there are apps that can be downloaded on your phone! Throughout the course, some of the financial myths our society tells us are dispelled. For many of us, we can’t imagine living life without a credit card. But, Dave Ramsey explains how it can be done! And for anyone who wishes to get rid of their credit card during the class, Ken will have big scissors ready to cut it up! When things feel daunting, I find that something exciting is having tools which are help-ful, and a method that really works. That is offered in this course! I highly recommend this course, regardless of your life stage and situation because there are tips, tricks and good lessons to be learned in order to find yourself in a better financial situa-tion in the future! A new class is forming and will begin on April 24th. Please feel free to ask Pas-tor Dave, Ken Keefer or myself any questions you have!
Peace,
Pastor Carolyn

March 25, 2019
As we begin the month of April, we are a
little over half-way through the season of
Lent. This is a good time to take a pause and
ask,
“How is my Lent going?”
“Have I kept my Lenten disciplines?”
“What can I do to continue my solemn
journey to the cross?”
In this spirit, I am reminded of the work
that we have been doing in our Adult Sun-
day School Class each week. During this sea-
son of Lent, we have not only meditated on
the theme of “Spiritual Discipline” but
we have also looked at this season as one of
healing. Each week we have asked God to
come into our lives in a new way and we
have been asking God to heal us from our
fears, our doubts and our apathy. In the
same spirit, we have asked God to heal us
for justice, heal us for service, and to heal us
for love.
It is a great reminder. Even though this
season of Lent can be a solemn one, it can
also be one that we take time to pause and
think about the things that we may need to
be healed from. What are the things that we
have done or left undone in our own lives, or
in the lives of others that we can ask God to
start to or help to “heal?”
As we start this second part of the season
of Lent, we start to glimpse the light. The
dawn of Easter morning is coming. May we
all continue to make our way to that blessed
morning. May we invite God into our lives
anew and allow the Holy Spirit to stir within
us.
As the old hymn says,
“Lord, Who throughout these forty days For us didst fast and pray, Teach us with Thee to mourn our sins And close by Thee to stay. As Thou with Satan didst contend, And didst the victory win, O give us strength in Thee to fight, In Thee to conquer sin. As Thou didst hunger bear, and thirst, So teach us, gracious Lord, To die to self, and chiefly live By Thy most holy Word. And through these days of penitence, And through Thy passion tide, Yea, evermore in life and death, Jesus, with us abide. Abide with us, that so, this life Of suffering over past, An Easter of unending joy We may attain at last.”

President’s Message March 20, 2019 Words and Actions
As I sit and compose these thoughts, I expect that like me, many of you are ea-
gerly awaiting the spring weather that seems to be arriving late. We are in the
middle of Lent, we are busy with Easter preparations, and by the time this is pub-
lished, we will have had another opportunity to break bread together at a Farm to
Table Dinner. I hope that this fellowship event will be as well attended as the re-
cent member forums that were organized to get feedback on staffing and budget.
I thank all of you who were able to attend these meetings in March or who
were able to share their thoughts with the Council in written form. The notes
and feedback from these meetings were clearly helpful in directing Council to ex-
tend the contract with Pastor Dave. Despite the recent history of our operating
budget shortfalls that have been narrowed and met each year in a truly blessed
manner, the family of St. Paul's has strongly expressed the desire to invest in an
Associate Pastor, and in Pastor Dave specifically. This was a very democratic
process of meetings and listening, but Council also heard that the congregation
would meet the budget. Words have been spoken. Generally, commitments have
been made. We heard that pledges to match the budget were an achievable goal.
So now we must look forward and do what has been talked about. If we be-
lieve that St. Paul's should grow and should support its staff, then it is now time
to increase our gifts as we are able. It is a rare event when a person commits to
do something and does not have to follow through on that commitment, or is
then not held accountable for their actions and words. Let's not allow ourselves
to be inflated by words and end up short of action. I challenge each of you to
commit your time, talents, and gifts as your hearts guide you.
See you on Sunday!

Women’s Daily Grace— Christ Reassures us 3/20/2019
“It seems that no matter what life stage people are in, the thought of walking through a door, developing new relationships or engaging in new adventures often comes with healthy doses of anxiety and stress.
It is not easy to meet new friends, to venture to new places, to begin new chapters in our lives. And yet, as daunting as these things may be, we are assured that we are never alone. We have the promise of a Savior who accompanies us along all paths of life and reassures us amid our fears and uncertainties.
In faith we call out, and Christ comes to our aid. Our path may be difficult, our hearts may be pounding, our way may be tumultuous, but Christ is with us, calming us and bringing us peace.
This message is adapted from “Faith Reflections: Boldly sharing faith” written by Diane Dardon that first appeared in the August 2009 issue of Café magazine. I

Property Committee Notes– March, 2019
1. The gas conversion is now complete with just some minor tuning to be done on the small oven. We will now begin the process of removing the old oil tanks.
2. We are still waiting to hear back from the Boy Scouts as to whether the community garden will be accepted as an Eagle Scout project.
3. We are still waiting on Johnson Controls to replace or hydro-test the fire extinguishers. As of the last email from them, we should be receiving a proposal for the work soon.
4. I have contacted Howard County to inquire about the process and possible fees involved in updat-ing our current sign to an electronic sign. I am also in the process of getting new prices from sign companies for the conversion.
5. After the last ice storm, it was brought to my attention, that there was a large limb overhanging the parsonage. Thanks to Joe and Cathy Dymek who contacted a tree company and had the limb re-moved.
6. Thanks also to our neighbor who brought in his landscaping crew and chipper to remove all the limbs that came down during the ice storm.
.
Thanks, to all those persons who have helped out in the past and also to those who have volunteered to
help going forward.

Lutheran Disaster Response U.S. Tornadoes
On March 3rd, powerful tornados hit Alabama, Georgia and Florida, causing widespread destruction. At
least 23 people have died in Lee County Alabama and others are still unaccounted for. More than 1,000
homes have been damaged, and thousands of people have lost power.
Lutheran Disaster Response is working with those in the impacted state, including partnering with the con-
gregations in the Southeastern Synod to respond with immediate relief.
Gift to Lutheran Disaster Response designated for “US Tornados” will be used to help those affected by tor-
nadoes until the response is complete. Together, we can provide immediate and long-lasting support. Please
give today.
Give through your congregation or make out a check to Lutheran Disaster Response and send to:
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, ELCA Gift Processing Center PO Box 1809, Merri-
field, VA 22116-8009 and write on the memo line “US Tornados DDG0020” or “Where needed Most
DDG0010”
