A Convert’s View “On September 12, 1977, I surrendered my ordination papers to Bishop Bruce Blake of the United Methodist Church. In doing so, I had laid down thirty years of Protestant ministry to become a Catholic. To many of my colleagues, this seemed a horrible mistake but to my wife Joetta and me, it was ‘coming home.’ In January of 1998, we made a pilgrimage to Rome to symbolize our desire to place ourselves under the authority of Pope John Paul II and the Roman Catholic Church. And finally on Easter Vigil, with great anticipation, Joetta and I were received into full communion with the Catholic Church. This was the culmination of a twenty-three moth, live-transforming odyssey.”

verts to the Catholic Church

Choosing to Live Faithfully “You also must be prepared, for at a hour you do

not expect, the Son of Man will come.” Luke 12:40

An unexpected death, especially of a young person, always brings shock. In addition to mourning the loss of a loved one, those left behind have to wrestle with the “why?” of an untimely death. Phrases such as “he had just turned his life around!” or “She had so much going for her!” are often heard. A sudden illness or tragic accident brings home the fragility of life and holds up the mirror of our own mortality. For some, this grim reminder leads to hedonism: “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die!” Such a philosophy leads to self-indulgence and a disregard for social responsibility or love of neighbor. As one student recently put it, “Why should I care about future generations? All I want to do is enjoy myself and be left alone!” Fortunately, others are not so selfish. Recognizing that there are no guarantees of longevity, they make the most of the days whey do have, living productive and faith-filled lives, serving God’s kingdom at every oppor-tunity. Death is inevitable; how we deal with this reality is a matter of choice. O’ Lord, may you find

us waiting in readiness. Elizabeth-Anne Stewart

Wisdom from our Catholic Tradition “The abundance of one’s wisdom does not profit toward eternal salvation unless the soul also shines with a good life.” St. Bridget of Sweden, religious, 1301-

Father’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s Notes Gossip When does injury to another person by true gossip

become sinful? If the information is strictly true and

has taken place, where is the injury?

In my experience as a priest, no sin of speech is more destructive to our social relationships than the one you mention - and the feeling that simply because a thing is true about someone else, we are free to say whatever we like about it, whenever we like, and to whomever we like. One who thinks and acts this way is grossly in error. When the topic of our loose gossip is true, we’re dealing with the sin of detraction & insult. To lie about others, attributing to them faults & bad actions we know are untrue, is even worse, a sin of calumny or slander. One commits the sin of detraction when he makes known the faults of another without a very good reason for doing so. It can be a serious moral offense if it does great harm to that other person’s reputation by having his other faults spread about when they otherwise would not be. The same sin is committed when the other person is refused ordinary decency & respect, whether face to face in private, or in public. Even when the other person’s faults are public knowledge, it can be a sin against charity to speak unnecessarily about those faults. Occasionally there may be good reasons to tell another’s faults. It is wrong, though, to imagine that just because a story about another is true, one is at liberty to spread it around. A person’s good name is among his most precious possessions, and the fact that one gets a kick out of being always there with the latest tidbit is no justification for tarnishing that good name. A person’s faults are a matter between himself and God. The rest of us should keep our noses out. Scripture has many strong condemning words for gossips. In Ps. 101: “The slanderer of his neighbor in secret - him will I destroy.” St. Paul recognized the poisonous effect of this kind of conversation. His advice to Titus is still valid: “Tell them not to speak evil of anyone.” This means in blunt language: “If you can’t say something good about someone, keep quiet.” From Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. Dietzen

Are You Being Called to Serve the Church as a Commissioned Lay Minister? The Formation for Ministry Program in our diocese prepares individu-als to exercise their Baptismal commitment to serve as commissioned lay ministers. This exciting pro-gram offers courses, workshops, retreats and super-vised field experience which prepare persons to serve as commissioned lay ministers in a wide vari-ety of ministries. Courses are six weeks long and are offered five times a year throughout the Dio-cese, including Endicott. For more information contact Fr. Vavonese at (315) 470-1491 or [email protected]

Dear friends, While driving in the country, you can’t help but notice the wildflowers alongside the road. Millions of yellow, blue and purple flowers and charming Queen Anne’s Lace. And they just go on and on as the miles go by. It’s as if God guides our journey with bouquets of wild flowers. There are cornfields as high as an elephant’s eye, and the blue sky can be brilliant. I know many have vacationed this summer by serene lakes and breathtaking ocean views. Everyday we have a choice to dwell on the negative or the beauty around us. God gave us a beautiful world and we must work hard to not let ourselves get distracted from his love for us! It’s easy to get down about things. Remember that the God of everything loved you into being. He wanted you here for a reason. So trust, step out into the deep and let that love happen! (That advice is from the daily emails that the Office of Evangelization sends out.) If you haven’t checked out the ‘Year of Mercy’ daily emails, do yourself a favor and look it up online at livemercy.org for some daily inspira-tion. At this site you can sign up for daily text or emails. It is one of the highlights of my day now! I met with our trustees last week. Jackie Henninge and Bob Larkin keep a watchful eye on our parish from finances to employees to parish life. They are very happy with how things are moving along here at Immaculate Conception. Without a resident priest it’s important to have checks and balances for all of our activities. They are also enthusiastic about our memorial garden as an outdoor prayer space for not just our parishioners but also our community. Folks passing through our town will be welcome, friends from other parishes, our families and friends, anyone who could use a little peace and quiet. When the church is locked and you need a little quiet space to pray or even just to collect your thoughts, this garden will be waiting. Peace!~Mary Wentlent
