TRANSCRIPT
We at Immaculate Conception are a group of people bound together by our belief in Jesus Christ as our Savior. When we were baptized, we were called to share in His work. Therefore we pledge ourselves to build a community where
all are welcomed, loved, needed and appreciated. Armed with the faith in the Immaculate Conception of Mary, we will celebrate the gift of life together in word and sacrament.

CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Blessed is he who keeps faith forever,
secures justice for the oppressed,
gives food to the hungry...
September 28 & 92, 2019 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“I love the church for the good it does in the world and has done in my life. I want the church to flourish not because it’s my “home team” but because I believe in its truths and have experi-enced its life-transforming love. I have been con-soled by faith in moments of grief, counseled by church men and women when uncertain, graced by our sacraments, and comforted by the familiar rhythms of Catholic worship when far from home.” ~ Chris Lowney

Discerning, developing and using your spiritual gifts!
The second Vatican Council calls parishes to empower apostles for the evangelization of the world! As we lead up to Stewardship Sunday on Nov. 10, each week this column will offer new questions help you discern your Spiritual Gifts and offer questions to help you see patterns in your life.
What is at the heart of life as a Catholic? Following Jesus! (CCC,519-521) Like the first disciples, we may struggle as we follow Jesus. We may be scared and not know how. We may resist because of our busy life! Where can we find the courage, the love, the wisdom and the power to follow Jesus? From the same source as the disciples - the Holy Spirit!
Week #3
#11 One of the most helpful and fulfilling things that I do as a Christian is to find ways in which people can work together to change things for the better. #12 I am drawn to help people who are ignored or rejected by society. #13 People of a different race or culture have told me they feel comfortable with my presence and friendship. #14 Singing or playing a musical instrument is one of my favorite ways to pray. #15 I understand the importance of Christian community and fellowship
Keep a journal of your answers each week, to help you see patterns in your life.

Building and Grounds
Please take a moment to look at the entrance doors, where the bottom of the doors are deterio-rating, and the frame of the hall doors are rusted through. These are not energy efficient and make it hard to keep the vestibules warm as well as keep little critters out in the winter! These doors are the original doors from when the church was built in 1981. For this reason, we are on a quest to replace them. Please see the display in the vestibule, and consider making a donation. Families can join to-gether to do this in memory of a loved one as well. There are special envelopes for your use by the display.
***Are you wondering what the project is that's located just above our parking lot? Scout Jakob Funnell approached our church parish council last year and spoke of the need for a flag burning pit in our area. He explained that the American Legion collects old and used flags from the deposit box in our town library, and has been burning them at the ballflats. His idea is to create a more respectful place for this to take place. Our parish council was happy to have our church participate in such a great community need.
Jakob plans to have the "hollow" complete in a few weeks, which will serve as his Eagle Scout Project. Jakob plans to enter the military after high school.

How everything in the Catholic Church points to Heaven
Have you ever sat in church and looked around, not fully understanding all the vessels, vestments and articles surrounding you? Each week we will explore one item, why it’s relevant, so you can appreciate the beauty and depth of our Catholic Faith. We hope you will go into church, find the item, and watch how it is used in the Mass. Pews and Kneelers: Pews and kneelers are found in the nave of the church, facing our Lord. they assist us in focusing directly on his presence in the tabernacle, in Sacred Scripture and on the altar of sacrifice. The action of kneeling has deep roots in the history of worship. Sitting in pews, however, is not found un-til recent years. The design of the nave did not consist
of pews until after the Protestant Reformation. Before this, people stood or knelt down during the Liturgy. In the medieval churches, the priest conducted his homi-ly surrounded by the faithful in the center of the nave. Pews in the US came gradually. With the emphasis on a long sermon in the Protestant communities, benches and pews were welcome. The Catholic Church in England especially liked this design and pews were brought over to the US. They were expensive at first however, and were first purchased by families to help cover cost. We sit to learn, we stand to show something great is happening, and we kneel for God. Kneeling is a sign of our humility and reverence before God. (see Psalm 95:6 and Philippians 2:10) (The Sacred that Surrounds Us by Andrea Zachman. Published by Ascension Press, 2019)

Dear friends, “The true joy in life is working toward a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one.” That thought came from George Bernard Shaw and is the first line in the latest book I have to read for a leader-ship course I’m taking from Sister Laura Bufano. Every month I attend a class with four other ladies in Syracuse. Our small group is attending training for lay leadership in parishes either without a resident priest now or in the near future. Our group is lucky because it meets during one of the Deacon training sessions, so we’ve gotten to know the 20+ men studying to be Deacons in our Diocese. Soon we will have more Deacons than Priests! As it says in my book, our church is facing its greatest crisis in five centuries, but we are the generations of Christians, privileged to live at this inflection point in church history. We are called to rebuild our church - rebuild the world! Pope Paul VI started the conversation and Pope John Paul II continued it encouraging new ways of sharing our faith. Now Pope Francis says the church should abandon the complacent attitudes that say: “We’ve always done it this way.” He wants us to be bold and creative in reaching out and sharing our faith. He advises the shepherd to “walk behind the flock from time to time, allowing the flock to strike out on a new path.” He advises lay Catholics to take the lead. At ICC we need to renew ourselves to this path we are on, surviving without a resident priest. The Holy Spirit has placed us all here at this moment when our church stands at an inflection point: we can either stagnate or surge forward. At Immaculate Conception, we are surging forward! None of us has asked for this calling; it has come to us, as calling so often does. Together we can step up and seize our leadership potential. We can have that “true joy in life” by working together toward our purpose as a Catholic parish family in Greene. This purpose is a mighty one and together we can do great things! Peace!~Mary Wentlent
Over 33 families have already registered for religious education and we plan for a total of 50 children and youth in grades k-10. This is wonder-ful news for our thriving parish! We had a great parent meeting last Sunday and many parents have signed up to help in various ways throughout the year. Sunday, September 29 is our first day of classes for k-8 and our first Youth Mass of the year. If you know of a family that might like to join our program, please share this news with them and invite them to join us!
Confirmation News: Parents of 9th and 10th grade youth will have a special meeting after Mass this Sunday September 29 in the church library. This room is located at the end of the back hallway. Information including date and location of the youth's Baptism is required. The year‘s calendar will be handed out at this meeting. Contact Chris Rice or Chris Wentlent for more information.
Urgent Need!
Subs needed for our Religious Ed program: We must put together a sub list for adults that would be willing to help when a teacher is sick or has a sick child on Sunday mornings during class time, 9-
10 am. All subs need to be VIRTUS trained, which is the safe environment program required by our Diocese. If you are interested please contact the parish office or Mary Wentlent.
Adult Bible Study begins Sunday, October 6. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:00 am for an 8 week study on Romans, The Gospel of Salvation. Sign-up in the vestibule
The 2019 Bishop James Moynihan Pro-Vita Award is now welcoming submissions by high school seniors in the Syracuse Diocese area to compete for two $1000 scholarships and one $500 scholarship, to be used towards college expenses, which will be awarded at the Mass for Life on October 24th. Eligible entries must be submitted by October 16th and will answer the following question: Why are you Pro-Life and what will you do to help build a Culture of Life? See the flyer posted in the vestibule for further details and submission information.
We hope your Summer was enjoyable. Fall is a good time to review your financial support to our parish as its regular hustle and bustle starts up again.
