The God Who is Revealed in Christmas

Christmas is God’s answer to human longing, God’s response to the centuries of prayers that lay hidden in our groaning, in our sighs, our frustrations, and our religious efforts, each of them a plea, mostly silent, for a divine intervention, all of them asking God to come and rid the world of injustice and our hearts of loneliness and heartache.

But God’s answer didn’t exactly meet our expectations even as it surpassed them. What was born with Jesus’ birth and what still lies seemingly helpless in mangers all around the world wasn’t exactly what the world expected.

What the world expected was a superstar, someone with the talent, sharpness, and raw muscle-power to out-gun everything that’s bad on this planet, someone charismatic enough to make everyone who opposes him slink away in defeat. God’s answer to that: A baby lying helpless in the straw!

Why?

Why would God choose to be born into the world in this way?

Because you can’t argue with a baby! Babies don’t try to compete, don’t stand up to you, don’t try to best you in an argument, and don’t try to impress you with their answers. Indeed, they can’t speak at all. You, on your part, have to coax everything out of them, be it a smile or a word, and that effort, which demands great patience, usually draws out what’s best in you. Moreover, you can’t push at a baby too hard, it will begin to cry and the session is over.

And that is the Savior who was born in Bethlehem, and that is how God is still basically in the world. Like a baby. God does not outgun anyone, out-muscle anyone, threaten anyone, or overpower anyone. The power of God revealed in Christmas is the power of a baby, nothing more, nothing less: innocence, gentleness, helplessness, a vulnerability that can soften hearts, invite in, have us hush our voices, teach us patience, and call forth what’s best in us. We watch our language around a baby in the same way as we watch our language in a church, with good reason.

The power of Christmas is like the power of a baby, it underwhelms in such a way as to eventually overwhelm. There is a greater power than muscle, speed, charism, unstoppable force: if you were to put a baby into a room with the heavy-weight boxing champion of the world, who ultimately would be the stronger? The boxer could kill the baby, but, no doubt, wouldn’t, precisely because something inside the baby’s powerlessness would overwhelm the boxer. Such is the way of God, the message of Christmas.

But we have always been slow to understand this. We want our messiahs to possess more immediate power. And we are in good company here. The messiah that people longed for during all those centuries leading up to Jesus and Bethlehem was precisely conceived as a human superhero, someone with the earthly muscle to bang heads together and purge the world of evil by morally superior muscles.

Even John the Baptist expected the messiah to come with that kind of power. His concern was justice, repentance, asceticism. He warned people of an approaching time of reckoning and expected the longed-for messiah to come precisely as a violent fire, a winnowing fan that would separate the bad from the good and burn up the former with a righteousness that came straight from God.

When he heard reports of Jesus gently inviting sinners in rather than casting them off, John was scandalized. That kind of a messiah didn’t fit his expectations, or his preaching. That’s why Jesus, in sending a response to him, invited John not to be scandalized in him. John hadn’t wanted a gentle, vulnerable, peace-preaching messiah. He wanted bad people punished, not converted. But, to his credit, once he saw how Jesus’ power worked, he understood, accepted a deeper truth, stepped back in self-effacement, and pointed people in Jesus’ direction with the words: He must increase and I must decrease. I’m not even worthy to untie his scandal strap!

We too are slow to understand. Like John the Baptist, our impatience for truth and justice makes us want and expect a messiah who comes in earthly terms, all talent and muscle, banging heads together so as to rid the planet of falsehood and evil. We want the kind of messiah we see at the end of every Hollywood thriller: Mother Theresa turned into Sylvester Stallone or Bruce Willis as I write this, beating up the bad guys with a violence they can only envy.

But that’s not the Christmas story, nor the power revealed in it. An infant lying in the straw in Bethlehem didn’t outgun anyone. He just lay there, waiting for anyone good or bad to come to him, see his helplessness, feel a tug at his or her heart strings, and then gently try to coax a smile or a word out of him. That’s still how God meets us.

El Dios que se revela en Navidad

La Navidad es la respuesta de Dios al anhelo humano, la respuesta de Dios a tantas oraciones que se ocultan en nuestros gemidos, nuestros suspiros, nuestras frustraciones y nuestros esfuerzos religiosos, cada uno de ellos una súplica, en su mayoría silenciosa, por una intervención divina, todos pidiendo a Dios que venga y libere al mundo de la injusticia y a nuestros corazones de la soledad y de la angustia.

Pero la respuesta de Dios no cumplió exactamente nuestras expectativas, aunque las había superado. Lo que nació con el nacimiento de Jesús y lo que todavía parece estar indefenso en los pesebres de todo el mundo no era exactamente lo que el mundo esperaba.

Lo que el mundo esperaba era una superestrella, alguien con el talento, la agudeza y la fuerza muscular para superar todo lo malo en este planeta, alguien lo suficientemente carismático como para hacer que todos los que se oponen a él se vallan derrotados. La respuesta de Dios a eso: ¡Un bebé acostado indefenso en la paja! ¿Por qué?

¿Por qué Dios eligió nacer en el mundo de esta manera?

¡Porque no puedes discutir con un bebé! Los bebés no intentan competir, no se enfrentan a ti, no tratan de superarte en una discusión y no intentan impresionarte con sus respuestas. De hecho, no pueden hablar en absoluto. Usted, por su parte, tiene que sacar todo de ellos, ya sea una sonrisa o una palabra, y ese esfuerzo, que exige una gran paciencia, generalmente saca lo mejor de usted. Además, no puedes presionar demasiado a un bebé, comenzará a llorar y la sesión habrá terminado.

Y ese es el Salvador que nació en Belén, y básicamente, así es como Dios esta todavía en el mundo. Como un bebe. Dios no domina a nadie, ni amenaza a nadie. El poder de Dios revelado en Navidad es el poder de un bebé, nada más y nada menos: inocencia, gentileza, impotencia, una vulnerabilidad que puede ablandar los corazones, invitarnos, hacer celen silenciar nuestras voces, enseñarnos paciencia e invocar lo que es mejor en nosotros. Prestamos atención a nuestro lenguaje alrededor de un bebé de la misma manera que prestamos atención a nuestro lenguaje en una iglesia, con buenas razones.

El poder de la Navidad es como el poder de un bebé, se debilita de tal manera que eventualmente lo abruma. Hay un poder mayor que el músculo, la velocidad, el carisma, la fuerza irresistible: si tuvieras que poner a un bebé en una habitación con el campeón mundial de boxeo, ¿quién sería el más fuerte? El boxeador podría matar al bebé, pero, sin duda, no lo haría, precisamente porque algo dentro de la impotencia del bebé agobiaría al boxeador. Pero siempre hemos sido lentos para entender esto. Queremos que nuestros mesías posean un poder más rápido. Aquí estamos en buena compañía. El mesías que la gente anhelaba durante todos esos siglos guiándolos a Jesús y a Belén fue concebido precisamente como un superhéroe humano, alguien con el músculo terrenal para golpear cabezas y purificar el mundo del mal con músculos moralmente superiores.

Incluso, Juan el Bautista esperaba que el mesías viniera con ese tipo de poder. Su preocupación era la justicia, el arrepentimiento, la piedad. El advirtió a la gente de que se acercaba el momento del ajuste de cuentas y esperaba que el ansiado mesías viniera precisamente como un fuego violento, un viento fuerte que separaría lo malo de lo bueno y quemaría al primero con una justicia directamente de Dios.

Cuando el escuchó que Jesús gentilmente invitaba a los pecadores en lugar de rechazarlos, Juan se escandalizó. Ese tipo de mesías no llenaba sus expectativas ni a su predicación. Es por eso que Jesús, al enviarle una respuesta, invitó a Juan a que no se escandalizara en él. Juan no había querido un mesías gentil, vulnerable y que predicara la paz. Quería que la gente mala fuera castigada, no convertida. Pero, para su crédito, una vez que vio cómo funcionaba el poder de Jesús, entendió, aceptó una verdad más profunda, dio un paso atrás y dirigió a las personas a la dirección de Jesús con las palabras: Él debe aumentar y yo debo disminuir. “Yo no soy digno de soltarle la correa de su sandalia.”

Nosotros también somos lentos para entender. Al igual que Juan el Bautista, nuestra impaciencia por la verdad y la justicia nos hace querer y esperar a un mesías que viene en términos terrenales, todo talento y fuerza, golpeando cabezas para librar al planeta de la falsedad y el mal. several months and are looking at ways to better accommodate

this increase.

Each household was given a box or bag with Thanksgiving food

and a turkey breast or ham in addition to our normal distribution.

lbs.)

Parish garden for fresh peppers (60 lbs.)

Thanks to Jim Hartman and the Burlington Velo Club for helping

procure and hand out turkey breasts/hams and to everyone who

contributed to help purchase the turkey breasts (1029 lbs.) and

hams (90 lbs.)

Panera for their bread donation (357 lbs.)

Generous parishioners for their donations of potatoes (800 lbs.),

venison (62 lbs.), eggs (80 dozen)

Blessed Sacrament School Food Drive (424 lbs.)

First Christian UCC for use of their parking lot during food

distributions.

Pro Data Research for providing boxes to pack food.

All our volunteers and benefactors.

In addition to canned food and dry goods we distributed the

apples, oranges, sweet potatoes, margarine and dairy products.

Stuff A Truck – Weekend donations to this month’s

collection totaled 735 lbs. Additional items were donated prior

to distribution on Saturday.

No one is admitted once the orientation session begins.

Requirements for the Faith ID Card:

1) Participation in the FaithAction ID Orientation;

2) Proof of Identification (original documents not

copies: i.e., national ID card, passport, school ID,

expired driver’s license, library card with photo,

work permit with photo, border cross card, birth

certificate along with a photo ID from this list, etc…)

3) Proof of current address within 2 months (i.e. phone

or electricity bill, lease agreement, bank statement,

etc…)

The FaithAction ID Card will cost $10 (cash or check

only) and will include your photo, full name, and

address, date of birth, and expiration date, along with

the FaithAction Logo.

4th Grade Visits Food Pantry

Last month, our 4th grade students took a

tour of the Blessed Sacrament Food

Pantry and learned about the daily

operations and all the hard work that goes

into keeping it running and serving our

community. As part of our service

learning projects, we will be returning at a

later date to help sort and organize food

items in the pantry. Many of our students

wanted to stay and help already! After

leaving the Pantry, we stopped by the

Alamance County Meals on Wheels office

and dropped off some Thanksgiving

placemats we created.

Time for Twos at Blessed Sacrament School

9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays

Blessed Sacrament School’s Time for Twos program is designed as a gentle

introduction to school. Our program encourages children to work in a group,

explore new materials, and make age-appropriate development transitions.

Our Program

Time for Twos meets on Wednesdays for a six week session in the Fall

(September to October). The 45-minute meetings are led by Program

Director, Jill Zang Glenn. Each child must be accompanied by a parent,

grandparent, or caregiver

A typical meeting includes an art project, free play, story and music.

Spring session dates are: February 19th, March 4th,11th, 18th, 25th and April 1st

How to Apply

Children who will be age two by August 31st of the current school year are eligible to enroll. Sessions are then filled on a first come

-first served basis. Enrollment in Time for Twos does not guarantee a place in the preschool the following year.

Time for Twos is currently enrolling for the Spring 2020 session. If you are interested in enrolling your child please contact David

Christmas Concert

Get in the Christmas spirit and join Blessed Sacrament School for their annual Christmas Concert on Monday, December 16 th from

7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Our students will be singing in the Chapel of Saint Clare (the old church). They have been practicing

diligently and it is sure to be great performance.
