Four of course! And that is just what is on tap this week. Monday was a Varsity trip to Andrew and Tuesday was a trip to Central City. Friday is a home game against North Linn and Saturday another trip East to Midland. Last Friday, the O’s battled Mother Nature and the Department of Transportation in order to make it up to East Buchanan for a JV/Varsity, Girl/Boy venue of ball games. The kids did not disappoint those who fought the elements to watch the games, as Springville swept the Buccaneers in all four games. The Junior Varsity teams both came away with victories, the girls winning 31-19 and the boys 42-30. Both were great warm ups for what was to come. The Varsity girls defeated East Buchanan, 65-29 in a game that was never close. The Orioles forced 25 East Buchanan turn-overs and held them to 8 field goals on the evening. Springville was led by senior Katie Wyman who finished with 15 points on the evening and was followed by fellow senior, Hannah Loehr who finished with 13 of her own. In the night cap, the Varsity boys pulled off a win that was well worth the icy trip north. With a sluggish start, the boys set themselves up for a come back performance in the second half and oh what a come back it was. Overcoming a double digit half time deficit, a key injury and foul trouble, it took a big time play by Senior Patrick Ray in order for the guys to pull off the win. Senior guard Brennan Starry left the game at the start of the 2nd quarter with a dislocated shoulder and Sophomore forward Jake Hulett fouled out with too many ticks on the clock for the Oriole crowd to have total confidence in a come back. But the Springville boys battled back, and it came down to a tie ball game with 46.5 seconds left and the Orioles in possession of the ball. Sophomore guard Dan Fitzgerald and Patrick Ray played catch at the top of the key, with 3.5 seconds to go, Ray launched a 25 foot 3-pointer and banked it in. East Buchanan called time out and it was defense from there. Freshman Elias Nissen deflected two in bound passes before their third attempt which was stolen by Ray to seal a 56-53 win. Coach Merritt commented, “I was very impressed with the character we showed up at East Buchanan. Being down double digits at the half, on the road, in a conference game, with an injured starter, and foul trouble and still making a huge run in the 3rd quarter and finishing off a tight basketball game with a win should show everyone that we have a group of guys with a lot of guts and resiliency.” Senior Joel Lam led the Orioles with a double-double, 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ray and Fitzgerald each finished with 9 points and 6 assists and Hulett added 6 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Injured Senior, Brennan Starry hopes to return to action next week when the O’s travel up to Maquoketa Valley. Monday, the varsity teams traveled to Andrew High School and the girls fell, 36-34, suffering their first loss of the young season. “Tonight we simply did not play well enough to win a basketball game”, said Coach Sanderson. Trailing 30 -22 with 5 minutes in the game, Junior C.J. Fitzgerald and Senior Abbie Neff each had two 3’s a piece to put the O’s up 34-32, but turnovers and the failure to get a stop on defense prevented the victory. “Hopefully we will use this game as a learning experience moving forward”, added Coach Sander son. Freshman Sam Fitzgerald led the Oriole scoring with 12 points, Senior Hannah Loehr finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The men however moved to 2-0 with a 38-34 win. The Orioles defense forced 19 Andrew turnovers. Dan Fitzgerald led the Springville boys with 12 points including 6 of 7 from the charity stripe. Jake Hulett finished with 9 points on 4 of 7 shooting and Freshman, Elias Nissen had 8 points on 3 of 3 shooting from the field and 2 of 4 from the line. Conference action was back on tap as the teams prepared for a match-up with Tri-Rivers foe Central City on Tuesday... YOUTH SPORT BASKETBALL On Saturday, the Springville 4th grade girls played three games in a Central City tournament that had them face two teams from North Linn and the host Central City. The girls overcame some floor burns and hectic substitution patterns to give a good effort on the afternoon. The 6th grade girls also played three games in the same Central City tournament and after dropping their first, came back to win their last two games of the tournament. In boys action, Beau Zaruba took a team of second and third graders up to East Buchanan for two games and the boys came away with a win and a loss on the day. It was the boys first taste of competition outside of Springville and they held their own.

ORIOLES FALL TO THE WILDCATS Tuesday was a short jaunt up to Central City for a full night of JV and Varsity action. The girls JV played just two quarters and won 10-3. The boys JV showed good composure as they beat Central City 30-24. In girls, Varsity action, the Springville’s shooting percentage was slightly higher than the temperature outside as the girls fell to the Wildcats, 54-44. Junior Brittney Oxley led the Orioles with a solid game, netting 15 points, 8 boards, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Senior Katie Wyman tossed in 9 points and Freshman Sam Fitzgerald had 8 points, 5 Rebounds and 4 assists. The girls fall to 2-2, 2-1 in Tri-Rivers play and look to regroup for a home game against North Linn on Friday. In the finale, the Springville boys fell to the Wildcats 49-41. The Orioles committed 16 turnovers, shot 30% from the field and were a dismal 1 of 14 from the 3 point line. Springville falls to 2-1, 1-1 in Tri-Rivers. Jake Hulett had a strong performance and led his team mates with a double-double. 15 points and 18 rebounds - the most rebounds by one Oriole in a game since 1992. Junior Caleb Anderson chipped in 10 points. Coach Merritt said, “We've got a very tough schedule coming up so we'll see how we can respond against some of the top teams in our conference”. You can catch them at home on Friday night as all teams, JV and Varsity, girl and boy will be hosting North Linn. JV begins at 4 with Varsity at @ 6:15.

ORIOLE LEGENDS Oriole Pride features Springville alumni who still have ties to the community. This week we feature Jaime and Beau Zaruba;

Jaime (McCleary) Zaruba; Class of 1996 Sports played in high school; Volleyball, Basketball, Track and Softball Recognition/Awards; 2nd team all conference in volleyball senior year, 2nd team all conference in basketball both junior and senior years and 1st team all conference in softball junior and senior years. What is your most cherished athletic memory? Beating Andrew in the regional volleyball semi-finals. We had beat them game 1, they beat us game 2 (back when there was no rally scoring). Games 3 and 4 we were down 14—3 or 4 and came back both games and won. We always seemed to lose to that team—played them in tournaments all throughout the year and could never beat them, but we beat them when it meant the most and in exciting fashion! Making it to state in track was pretty cherished too—getting to run on the blue track and getting the bottom of our shoes blue! What is one of the craziest things you did in high school? Kicked the wall in the hallway by the locker rooms and caused a hole in the wall. Nickname; Mac College attended, degrees earned; I started out at Mt. Mercy as a traditional student and majored in math. Beau and I got married though after my freshman year and we moved to Virginia. I went to Northern Virginia CC out there and got my AA in Accounting. Then, when we moved back to Iowa in 2000, I resumed at Mt. Mercy where I got my BA in Business in 2003. I took a year off to have Cade. :)Most memorable teacher from high school and what made that teacher so memorable; Wow, that’s hard because I had a lot of great teachers. I actually loved Mrs. James. Partly because she taught Science and I loved Science and partly because I just liked the way she taught. However, I loved Semler too, even though I didn’t like History… and Mr. Jurgensen before he left because I liked math. I also loved Mrs. Davis—she was my personal attendant in our wedding! How many students in your senior class? 33, including 4 foreign exchange students What actor/singer was your heart-throb while in high school? Not sure I had one in HS, in junior high it was Jon from NKOTB. If they were to make a movie about you, who would play you? Jennifer Garner If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Have my house clean at the snap of a finger and the patience of a saint. Wait, that’s 2—oops. Where was your first date with Beau? Do you really go on dates in 6th grade? How long have you been married? 13 years What are the names and ages of your children? Cade, 9 years and Ashlynne, 5 years. A quick word of wisdom for Springville student/athletes… Just go your hardest. Even if you’re not the most talented, but go hard, good things will come your way.

Beau Zaruba;

Class of 1996 Sports played in high school; Football, Basketball, Track and Baseball Recognition/Awards; Yes in football, basketball and baseball. I don’t remember specifics. Who was your big rival when in high school? Central City, even though we combined for football. What is your most cherished athletic memory? That is a tough one, probably running the 4x4 at state, or running against Tim Dwight in the 4x100 at the Drake Relays. What is one of the craziest things you did in high school? Almost drowned at Palisades park riding on an inner tube with four other people. Nickname; Other than loser… Zub Most memorable teacher from high school and what made that teacher so memorable; There are a few of them, Coach Mac or Coach Hopkins, but probably Greg Semler. He taught Social Studies. He was very energetic, he made class fun and interesting. I remember him getting on top of a table once while giving a lecture because he was excited about it. He was and is one of the best for sure. What was your first car? 1984 Chevy Celebrity (I know you’re jealous) Describe your senior prom tux; Black What did you want to be when you were 12 years old? A professional basketball player If they were to make a movie about you, who would play you? Probably Brad Pitt since we are identical twins born from separate mothers. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Flying, I hate traffic. If you could trade places with one person, real or fictional, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Fictional would be Superman for sure, real would be Mike Krzyewski, basketball coach at Duke. A quick word of wisdom for Springville student/athletes… Have fun and work hard. Oh yeah, and NO Billy’s.

Thank you Jaime & Beau
