Hulett and Nissen can provide directions to the stadium, as both competed last season in the state venue. ORIOLE TRACK...STATE BOUND

I wonder if the Springville history teachers are lecturing on the Westward Movement this week. It’s a great analogy don’t you think? Pioneers of the early 1800’s compared to the Springville fans migrating to Des Moines this weekend. Polk County may not know what hits them as the Orioles and its fans invade the state track meet. Ok, maybe it’s a stretch, but nonetheless, Springville sends 4 qualifying teams and 3 qualifying individuals who will strut their stuff on the Big Blue Oval at Drake Stadium. SPRINGVILLE KIDS SHINE AT CORNELL TRACK MEET

Cornell College hosted its 13th annual elementary track meet for area kids in grades 1 thru 6. Springville’s Jeff Menster coached a group of Oriole’s who trained and competed on May 6. After the dust settled, each Oriole athlete placed, and as proud Mom Dee Wagaman said, “They rocked them”. Participating athletes and their events were as follows: Rylee Menster: long jump, 100 dash & 4x100—Luke Menster: 50, 100 & 400 dashes—Madi Wagaman: 50, 100 dash & 4x100 relay—Kylie Hanshaw: 50, 100 dash & 4x100 relay—Alyssa Jaeger: 50, 100 dash & 4x100 relay—Rhenden Wagaman: long jump, 50 & 100 dash. The 4x100 team of Menster, Wagaman, Hanshaw and Jaeger set a new meet record with their time of 1:01.07. Well done Future O’s! (Thank you to Dee Wagaman for info and photo’s)

DID YOU KNOW?

Oriole athletes have storied histories of success and achievement. Oriole Pride always enjoys sharing those memories and welcomes the opportunity for these “Did You Know?” points of interest. In 1995, most of the country was entranced by the O.J. Simpson trial. Here in Springville, the girls distance medley team of Stephanie Martin, Tara Sjostrom, Nerissa Nagel and Jaime McCleary qualified for the state track meet. Stephanie Martin also qualified in the high jump. On the boys side in ‘95, Kurt Feltes qualified for the state meet in the shot put. In 1996, the country was put at ease when the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski was arrested. Here in Springville, Kurt Feltes broke a 24 year old school record in the discus when he threw 140’8” which qualified him for the Drake Relays. Also in ‘96, Joe Nietert broke the freshman 3200 record with his time of 10:33.9. And the 4x100 boys team of Carsten Topp, Jordan Melsha, Derick Taube and Beau Zaruba qualified for the Drake Relays.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. This week we feature Bolivar High School in Bolivar, Missouri. The “Liberators” compete in traditional sports as well as tennis & soccer. Their school colors are blue & gold and their nick name is in reference to a South American historical figure, Simon Bolivar whose nickname was “El Libertador”.

BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL PRACTICES IN FULL SWING The boys and girls of summer both have season openers next week. The boys open up with a road game at Calamus-Wheatland on Wednesday while the girls open up at Mt. Vernon on Tuesday. Stay tuned for team info. Left, Senior Jamie Donaldson returns to lead the Lady O’s this season and gets some infield time while Sophomore Kerrigan Riley waits in the background. To the right, Freshman Trevor Hulett takes some infield at 3rd base.

DID YOU NAME THIS “O”?

I know a couple of you did—yes, it is none other than... Mrs. Stacey Matus.

CAN YOU NAME THIS “O”? Take a guess as to who this Springville Community School District employee is, pictured to the right… Tune in next week to see if you are even close.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST: Check out these MLB games on Sunday and make your picks.

Orioles at Nationals Twins at Brewers White Sox at Cubs Cardinals at Dodgers Here’s what you do, choose your winners, & predict the winner of the CR Titans/Bloomington Edge indoor football game for the tie breaker. Send your picks & name to [email protected] & catch the next issue to see who won bragging rights. Congratulations to Springville’s Cavanaugh Riley for winning last week’s contest.

SCRIVER TO COMPETE IN QB CHALLENGE Sophomore Oriole, Sam Scriver won the right to compete in Friday’s half time QB challenge when the Titans play the Edge. If he wins, he’ll move on and compete in another challenge for scholarship money. Pictured to the left are a couple of Titan football players and a cheer leader who came to Springville to announce that Sam had won the opportunity to play. Voters chose Sam on a web site and nominated him for the chance to compete. Good luck Sam.

YOUTH SPORT FOOTBALL PROGRAM HOLDS FUNDRAISER

Jeff Menster was an Economics and Business Major in college. The Cornell grad “proved his worth” with his great market-ing plan for a fundraiser. What better way to raise some money, than to set up shop, selling dogs, chips, pop and cookies at Culver’s Lawn & Garden Center on the Saturday before Mother’s Day! That is just what some Springville families did last weekend. Over $400 was raised in the afternoon and the funds will go toward the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th grade tackle league costs. $400 may not put them on the Fortune 500 list, but it goes a long way toward the purchase of football equipment.

Pictured to the left, Chef’s, Waiter’s, Salesmen all in one... Curt Koppes, Jeff Menster, Dee Wagaman, Curt Feltes, Kyle Koppes and Drew Feltes.

FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM KEEPS ON ITS WINNING WAYS

Springville Legend Beau Zaruba continues to coach an Oriole team temporarily playing as “The Wildcats” in the Metro Youth Football League this Spring. The boys are playing “flag football” against teams from the greater Cedar Rapids area. Last weekends game featured another win in a Big Ten battle against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Keep up the good work boys.

DID YOU KNOW? The US Touch and Flag Football Association was founded in 1976. While it is primarily a “mens” association there are 4 states who currently have women’s teams. Rules initially called for 9 man teams, now they play with 8, however the women’s teams play with 7. National Championships are held the first week of December each year and a team from Virginia has won it for the last four years in a row.
