In this compelling articlefrom the Sydney Morning Herald,

bestselling author and clinical psychologist Dr Wendy

Mogel argues that many well-intentioned modern parents

are 'over-parenting' their children in some

potentially damaging ways. She offers 10 warning signs for

parents to look out for and highlights how over-parenting

can dangerously impede the resilience and mental

wellbeing of children and adolescents. This is a timely and

challenging piece for all parents and educators.

Growth Mindset

This year we are developing an understanding of growth

mindset for our students and what this means for their

learning. As teachers we are praising the effort a child

puts into their work rather than just saying ‘Well done,

aren’t you clever.” Maths is a subject children seem to

have a fixed mindset about and too often children give up

because they find it challenging. We need to adopt this

word: ‘Yet’

If a child says, “I’m not a maths person…….yet” This

means they are back on the learning curve.

The brain is like a muscle and it can be developed. It is

never too late to learn. This YouTube clip from Carol

Dweck, Developing a Growth Mindset, is well worth a

watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiiEeMN7vbQ.

Here is a poster challenging all of us to stop and think

when we come across a problem, what mindset are we?

Board of Trustees Update August 2015

The board is reviewing communication with our school community when dealing with unplanned school closures or urgent events. Of paramount importance is letting parents know their children are safe and that children will be supervised and cared for until parents are able to collect them. Our line of communication is to first text, then email and we will put up information on our website. The teachers have made interim teacher

judgments based around the National

Standards at the end of last term and have

shared this with parents in the parent/teacher

interviews. Each syndicate is reviewing this

information and they are setting targets for

their syndicate for the rest of the year. This

information is used by teachers to plan and

group children according to need. It also helps

the school make decisions on resourcing. For

example, Jess Teaz is working with some

children or is releasing the class teacher to

work with children.

Matariki was a fantastic evening whereby the

community come together to celebrate

Matariki and our school. It is a highlight on our

annual calendar and the Board appreciates the

organising group’s sterling work.

Our new “Modern Learning Environment”

furniture has arrived in the Takahe syndicate.

The teachers and students are really enjoying

their new environment for learning. Pop in and

have a look.

As always, if you have any questions or

comments, please feel free to contact any of us

via the school office. Our next meeting is

scheduled for 7.00 pm Tuesday 8 September, in

the staff room.

Board of Trustees: Mary-Ann Butterfield

(Chairperson), Liz Rhodes (Principal), David Lee,

Rex Moller, Matthew Murfitt, Nigel Corry and

Glen Burdon (Teacher Representative).

Support Brooklyn Basketball on

Wednesday 19th August

We will be having a bake sale - no need to

pack morning tea that day - just send your

child with $1 - $3.

It will be at morning tea time and a reminder

will go out the day before.

Thanks for your support

From Brooklyn Basketballers

Year 3 - Year 8.

Hockey for Yr 1-3 and New entrants Keen to give hockey a go? During the winter terms Brooklyn Geckos Hockey Club trains Fridays at 4-5pm at Bell Road Gym (indoors). Beginners welcome, we provide sticks and balls. Just turn up on practice day!

Brooklyn School Underwater Hockey Team

Brooklyn School underwater hockey team achieved one of its best results to date, playing at Naenae pool

on Saturday 1st August. The team came second in its Group A round robin play. Losing to Marsden in a

semi-final tussle by 1 - 0 in a golden goal / extra time epic battle. In the playoff for 3rd and 4th they

narrowly beat Raroa Intermediate winning the Bronze medal for third which was a fantastic result!

Well done to all the players for a great 100% effort on Saturday and a special mention to the following

goal scorers: Bella B (11 goals) Ruby (4 goals), Olli L (2 goals) Emma S, Emma G, Ashleigh B - all with 1

goal.

This was a great result for our team comprising both experienced and new players. So if your child (in

Years 6 to 8) wants an energetic afternoon twice a term, playing underwater hockey please contact Nicky

Burdon (team manager) 9711265 or Carl Savage (assistant). They do need to be reasonably competent

(but not necessarily all that experienced) swimming with flippers, mask and snorkel and be able to hold

their breath underwater for a reasonable amount of time.

Calendars! Cards! Diaries! Notebooks!

Mouse Mats!

This week you are invited to pop in to your child’s

classroom to see their artwork for this year’s

calendars, cards, notebooks, mouse mats and

diaries. From what we’ve seen so far, the art looks

amazing!

Notices went home last week with details of the

fundraiser and an order form. Please keep this in a

safe place until you’ve had a look at your child’s art

and are ready to order. If you didn’t receive a notice,

please pick one up from the office. Samples of the

cards, calendars, notebooks, mouse mats and diaries

are also in the office, and are shown on posters

around school.

All orders and payments must be received by next

Friday, August 21.

Ordering products featuring the art your child

creates in class is easy – just fill out the blue order

form and submit payment.

However, if you want to order products featuring

your own photograph instead, instructions on

uploading to the Abacus website are on the order

forms that went home. Please make sure the image

has loaded correctly by previewing it before you exit

their site. Last year our entire school’s order was

delayed by a handful of uploading errors and some

people did not receive their products until February

this year. We don’t want that to happen again, so

please double-check!

Please support your children and the school by

buying these fantastic products. Not only are they

very useful but they also make great gifts for family

and friends.
