It was a time of protests against war but not against pollution, with many people worried about all the ways the environment was in trouble, but not focusing on the same topic. The book, Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, changed that. What she wrote about insecticides and other kinds of pollution killing birds began to make people aware of a lot of the things that today bring about climate change and make some species become extinct. It was 1970, and a senator from Wisconsin, named Gaylord Nelson, thought that if he could find some way to harness for the earth the power of protests against the Vietnam War, he could stop companies and people from using chemicals that caused pollution. So, he planned to start a teach-in, which became what we now know as Earth Day. Twenty million people participated in the first Earth Day, working on many different projects. Whether they worked to save orcas or frogs, or against oil spills and toxic dumps, they realized their concerns weren’t as different as they had thought. According to earthday.org, due to the

first Earth Day, the United States E.P.A, (Environmental Protection Agency), was created, and several important environmental laws were also created. Twenty years later, in 1990, Earth Day went global, from twenty million people to two hundred million people, in 141 countries, bringing worries about the environment to the world stage. In the year 2000, five thousand environmental groups throughout 184 countries reached out to hundreds of millions of people who let governments everywhere understand that they wanted a clean, safe world. At Earth Day 2014, right here near Bret Harte Middle School, volunteers from the Friends of Sausal Creek removed invasive plant species, retreaded the trail, and picked up trash along Sausal Creek. In Dimond Park they brought water, snacks, sunscreen, long pants, layers, boots, tools, gloves, and project materials. According to A Short History of Dimond Canyon and Sausal Creek by Eleanor Dunn, the area from the Montclair hills to Dimond Park near Fruitvale and MacArthur is a wooded open space called Dimond Canyon with several trails, some used when people

first were on these hills. Today, people still hike these trails. Friends of Sausal Creek were formed in 1996 with help from the City of Oakland, the Aquatic Outreach Institute, and the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. The group focuses on the entire Sausal Creek Watershed, and has set up clean-up hikes inside the canyon, water quality monitoring of the creek, and has planted a garden for plants native to here and a river restoration site at the lower side of the hiking trail in Dimond Park.

Kalin & Myles: Two of the Bay Area’s Best Singers By Leanne Peou

1

You would expect talent would be the first thing for these guys but for them it was the last. Growing up in the Bay Area nobody really expect them to make great music. I think people need to give them a chance. If you just listen to the music one time you would have some respect for them. Myles Merch said, “It started off doing things myself, making beats, rapping and recording stuff in my room. To me Kalin and Myles inspire a lot of kids to follow their dreams. They got discover by just uploading a video on facebook and youtube. A lot of people want to see more videos from them. They made some more videos by the fans request. They just keep getting bigger and bigger. Last year in the summer they played in Great America with Ariana Grande. All of their songs are very catchy to me, because you really wouldn't expect Myles to rap and Kalin to sing. To me it’s supposed to be like the opposite but you have to admit they both are really good the way they are. For a bunch of west coast boys they are really getting known

2

fast. They have been on the radio station 99.7 and go to almost all of their events. They call all their fans KAM FAM, they’re basically like family for them. Without them they wouldn't be where they are. Once in a while they do a live stream show. They would sing for you anything you kind of want they are mostly weird on it.The boys do covers once in a while but they always have an original song.

The songs are really catchy some people said they could relate to their songs. The songs they make is about a special someone and they are shy to go up to them and tell them how they feel about that person. So they basically tell how they feel from their songs. A lot of people agree that their music is getting popular. 8th grade, Kaliyah Chhan said, “A lot of their lyrics are just amazing and been stuck in my head ever since I heard it.” 8th grader Helen Nguyen also said, “I’m surprised they are from the Bay Area because not a lot of people in the Bay get discovered. Their songs are just amazing.”

In my own opinion I think that a lot of their fans are mostly from the Bay Area because they mostly do the concerts here in the Bay.

Javier Hernandez Balcazar is a Mexican soccer player from Guadalajara. Javier’s position is striker. He played for the Mexican soccer clubs Chivas De Guadalajara lower division Chivas Coras in Tepic, Nayarit in 2005-2006 season. He made his debut with Chivas De Guadalajara in 2006. Javier is also known as Chicharito meaning little pea in Spanish, because his father Javier Hernandez Gutierrez was nicknamed Chicharo meaning pea because of his green eyes. On July 5, 2011,the International Federation of Football History and Statistics named Hernandez as the “World Goalgetter 2011”, with 13 goals, ahead of other players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Giuseppe Rossi, and Lionel Messi, states Wikipedia.org Manutd.com claimed that, “Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with the Mexican soccer club, Chivas de Guadalajara for the purchase of 21 year-old Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, better known as “Chicharito,” for an undisclosed fee, subject to a successful application for a UK work permit. The application for the work permit will be submitted shortly. If a permit is granted, Javier will become a Manchester United player on 1 July 2010. Manchester United paid 6 million Euros which are 83,478,000 in US Dollars” Javier-hernandez.net stated that, “He previously played for Mexican club Guadalajara. He made his debut for the Mexico national football team in September 2009 in a match against Colombia and represented them at the 2010 FIFA World Cup scoring two goals. He was set to play in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship, but an injury sidelined him from the team that ultimately won the championship. Hernández joined C.D. Guadalajara at the age of nine and signed his first professional contract when he was 15.”

Espnfc.com says, “Strengths: Has great vision and anticipation in the box, while his decision-making is consistently impressive; he is also great in the air and boasts plenty of pace on the ground. Weaknesses: Not the most physically imposing of players, though he has shown he can make up for it with his other attributes. Style: A natural poacher, but also a forward who always works for the rest of the team, refusing to simply sit in the box and wait for assists. There is no doubt that Hernandez is a promising player. ‘He is excellent, I have seen some games of his on television and he is a fantastic footballer, ‘High praise from one of the greatest of all time, Pele, in May 2011.” 8th grader Michael Adeyeye thinks, ” He is a good player but he has a lot to learn and he can become better. Well I could learn to like him if he plays better. I think he can play better. I think he can come close to Cesc Fabregas,” said Adeyeye. 8th grader Matthew Llerenas also says, ”I knew Chicharito when he entered the Mexican soccer team. Chicharito was better known when he made a very good goal in Manchester United. I also know him by his father that was a really good soccer player. I don’t really like the way he plays but he does make some good moves in the field. In my opinion Chicharito will get better in the future only if he dedicates his-self to practice a lot,” said Llerenas. According to 8th grader Fredy Perez also says he has heard about Chicharito,” Yeah, I know him and he plays good even though he is not one of my favorite players. Probably on his national team he could do better because in Manchester only he plays for a little bit. If he goes to another club that lets him play a full game he will do better.” said Perez.

Nowadays, it seems like the main goal for consumers is to own the next biggest, most groundbreaking piece of technology and entertainment. Every year, companies like Sony, Lionsgate, Paramount, and Columbia, Rockstar, and Naughty Dog try to outdo their past achievements, before those achievements have a chance to settle in and leave their mark on the technology and entertainment industry. But sometimes in the constant quest to keep up with new forms of entertainment, we overlook really cool achievements from the past. And, in many cases, although the technology is nowhere near as advanced as the stuff we have today, we should learn to appreciate and enjoy them. I’m here today to give you a history of entertainment that I consider is worth going back to look at; All the way from the late 1930’s to the late 2000’s For now, I am going to focus on 3 medias: TV, Movies and Video Games. All these medias started out rather simplistic when they got popular. Movies and TV were in black and white, and Video Games hadn’t even existed yet. Although many would agree that movies today are better in overall production quality, some movies generally considered to be great came from the early 30’s. Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, and It’s a Wonderful Life have received praise from critics. According to rottentomatoes.com, the 60’s were also a very influential decade for film. Spy films, horror films, and sci-fi fantasy films were all at their peak during this decade. Some notable films from this time include Dr. No (The first James Bond film.), 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Psycho. Comedy Movies were also very plentiful in the 80’s and 90’s. Some prominent ones are Ghostbusters, Back To The Future, The Beverly Hills Cop Series, Dumb And Dumber, Wayne’s World, and Friday. Now you may be wondering, how did people watch all these movies? During the course of these 3 decades, many different formats of enjoying movies came and went. The first and simplest format is the traditional movie theater, which are still popular today. But the problem was, back then at least, if you wanted to see a movie real bad, but missed the movie’s original theatrical run, you were out of luck. But then, in the mid 70’s, VHS was introduced and quickly became the standard format for home video entertainment. Then in the mid 1990’s, DVD was introduced and became the new home video entertainment format standard. Today, Blu-ray is considered the standard for most homes, but some people may still find enjoyment in these past formats and movies. Video games emerged long after movies did, so you’d expect games from now to be similar to games from before, but in the few decades they have been around, video games have changed quite a bit… Continued on page 5…

Should We Appreciate Older Entertainment? By Andres Avila

Although the very first home video game console came out in the 70’s, the first widely popular video game console came about in 1985, and was called the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The system was home to many popular and influential games, such as the first games in the Super Mario Brothers, Legend Of Zelda, and Donkey Kong series. NES’s controller was very primitive, being a simple rectangle shape and having only a black d-pad, start and select button, and only 2 red main buttons (B and A). In 1991, the NES’s successor was released and was called the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Most of the successful games on the SNES were sequels to games introduced before on the NES. These include Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past, Donkey Kong Country, and Mega Man X. One of the most remembered events of the SNES era was the famous console war. During the early 1990’s there were two major consoles: the SNES and the Sega Genesis. The Genesis is most notable for being home to the extremely popular Sonic The Hedgehog Series; the first 3 games appearing on the console. The SNES/Genesis war is considered by many to the fiercest console war in history. Sega even went as far as to insult the SNES in commercials; coming up with a tagline: “Genesis does what Nintendo’s,”. The argument over which console is still discussed even today. After the SNES was discontinued and Sega consoles were selling less and less, Nintendo released their next system: the Nintendo 64. But this time, Nintendo had competition; Sony’s first system in the PlayStation series: the PlayStation 1. In 2001, Sony released what would become the best selling home video game console of all time: the PlayStation 2. The system’s most famous and best selling game is Rock star’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Both this game and Manhunt, another popular Rock star game, have received extreme amounts of controversy; Grand Theft Auto for its portrayal of killing and gang violence, and Manhunt for its level of violence and gore that had never been seen before. Nevertheless, these games have remained extremely popular and are still often played today. And that brings us to present time. Many people today show their appreciation toward older games, and 10 years from now people will most likely do the same to our present day consoles. Television sort of falls in between movies and video games; The first live United States television broadcast happening in 1951. TV during the 50’s was mostly comprised of family comedies such as Leave It to Beaver, and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Just like movies in the 50’s, TV was heavy in sci-fi and drama entertainment, the most popular series being The Twilight

Zone. During the 60’s TV had become the daily pastime that is today. The decade was basically a huge mix of different genres and created shows that have been referenced for years. These include: Batman, The Brady Bunch, Star Trek, and The Flintstones. Many shows of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s were focused on the fictitious lives of families called sitcoms. “Sitcom” is just a shortened form of situation comedy; a comedy in which the characters are all in and/or from the same environment. This can be a house, city, workplace or other location. Some notable sitcoms include: The Brady Bunch, Seinfeld, Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and Family Matters. Some sitcoms were filmed in front of a live audience, but this effect is now replaced by the popular laugh track. Another popular form of sitcom is the animated sitcom. The sub-genre gained fame after the iconic series, The Simpsons, first aired in 1989. Other popular animated sitcoms include: Family Guy, South Park, American Dad, Beavis and Butt-head, and Futurama. Drama TV shows gained fame in the mid 2000’s with the popular series, Lost. Two of the AMC Network’s original series, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, have received widespread fame; So much that The Walking Dead has become the most watched basic cable drama series in History.

I then asked Harley what a Frost Giant was and she replied, “Its this race of evil creatures that tried to destroy Earth a long time ago, they are normally mentioned in Norse Mythology.” I was so angry with rage that I tore the newspaper up piece by piece. I can’t believe that this “God” was better than me! I then thought to myself, I’ll need a way to get revenge, the way this Frost Giant did. I then told Harley,“I need you to find out everything about this Frost Giant in order to find his weakness.” She said,“If it’s that important, I hear that he’s in love with a girl that visits Bruce Wayne all the time because they are step brother and sister.” I hugged Harley and said,“Good work kid, now let’s go find this weakness and bring her back here.” We then jumped in the convertible I had stolen from the car dealership in the middle of town and drove to Bruce Wayne’s mansion. Loki’s Point Of View: “So tell me about your family, Arya,” I asked her, wanting to know more about her. “If you like, you can come with me to pay them a visit at Gotham City. All I have is a step brother and I like to visit him a lot,” she said. “That would be great! When do we leave?” I asked with excitement. “Is right now ok with you?” she asked. “Yes. Let me just drop off my things at my room and I’ll meet you at the Bifrost. Ok?” I asked. “Sure, but I’ll go with you just to make sure this is not one of your tricks,” she said. I can’t believe how clever this girl is, it’s like she’s known me my whole life. “Fine with me, shall we go now?” I smirked, “Ladies first.” Once we reached the Bifrost, without a word spoken, Heimdall turned his sword towards Midgard as soon as he saw Arya. There I realized that Arya visits her stepbrother a lot. I just hoped that the mortals wouldn’t attack me. “Come on Loki, my brother hates to wait for me. He gets really

worried,” she said. “I’m coming,” I responded with hurry as we made our way to Midgard. To be honest, I’ve never been to Gotham City so this is one adventure for me! I’ve heard that there is this man that calls himself Batman and has an enemy called The Joker. But as I said, they’re just stories. Continued on pg.7

Loki’s Point Of View: It was December first, and I was still rotting in my prison cell. The good thing was that today was my last day in this prison. When my brother Thor became the All-Father, he promised me that I was to be released 7 days before my birthday. Since I had helped him save Jane from the Aether and I was able to recognize and admit my faults, he thought that was the least he could do. As I was packing up my stuff, I heard footsteps heading towards me. I turned to see who it was and saw a beautiful girl heading towards me. “Hello Loki, my name is Arya of Midgard,” said the girl. “I thought Asgard didn’t welcome Midgardians?” I smirked. She was beautiful indeed, the most beautiful creature I’ve seen in my life. “They don’t, but I’ve lived in Midgard ever since I can remember. Odin came after finding out that I was actually kidnapped and took to Midgard. No one knows what realm I am from so I always say that I am from Midgard,” she responded. “I see. So you are like me in a way?” I asked. “Yes, I am in a way,” she chuckled with a smile. Wow, as I saw her smile, she became even more beautiful by the minute. “And may I ask, what is such a stunning lady like you doing in a place like this?” I asked. But I saw that the smile she had was slowly fading away. “The All-Father Thor has requested me to watch over you for a year, just to make sure you don’t mess up anything,” she responded. “I don’t need a babysitter, thank you very much. But, I think we can get along well,” I said, hoping to see her smile again. “Yes, I think so too,” she chuckled, slipping a little smile. Joker’s Point Of View: It was the first day of December; I just got out of Arkham and was plotting my revenge on Batman. I just sat on the couch all day staring at a picture of the caped crusader while I threw smiley face darts at it, but sadly I ran out of darts so I complained about it to Harley who was in the kitchen washing my toy rifle that shoots chocolate sauce. “Harley I need more darts!” “Sorry Mr. J but I’m busy. You can have your toy rifle when I’m done washing it.” I then got frustrated and walked over to her and placed my hands on her neck and prepared to choke her, before I did anything to her I thought about, let her go and just went back to the couch. Once Harley was done washing my toy rifle and filling it up with chocolate sauce I used it to shoot the photo of Batman, but Harley had taken it away from me because the Hyenas were eyeing the picture when it was all soaked in dog poison. She had then taken the picture and replaced it with another photo of Batman. She then walked over to me with a newspaper in her hand and a grin on her face. “You’re not going to like what’s on the front page.” While I read the headline on the newspaper Harley walked away with her fingers plugging her ears, I then noticed the words, “Frost Giant from Asgard tries to destroy Stark tower in New York.” Photo%Credit:%Google%Images%%

Continued from page 6… Joker’s Point Of View: We didn’t want to get caught sneaking into the mansion so we hid behind his mansion and waited for the right time to go inside and kidnap this weakness. An hour later the doorbell rang and Bruce Wayne had sent his butler to answer it, Harley and I looked in the window and saw a woman with golden brown hair and green eyes, there was also a man with her who had shoulder long hair and green eyes. I’m guessing the golden brown haired woman was the weakness and the man with her was my soon to be enemy. By the look of things they must’ve been staying for dinner since the millionaire playboy was sitting in the dining room and the table was covered in food. Then Bruce Wayne’s guest walked into the dining room and sat down at the table. Loki’s Point Of View: At last, did we arrive at Gotham City. As I followed Arya to a mansion, I noticed that this city was destroyed and repaired many times. This made me think that the stories could be real. As we entered the mansion, I saw Arya hug a man with a tuxedo. “Good to see you again Ms. Wayne,” said the man. I suppose he was the butler. “Back to you Alfred. Is my brother around?” she asked. “Master Bruce is in the dining room. I was just serving dinner when I heard the doorbell ring. Do you want to join him?” Alfred responded. “If he won’t mind, we’d love to. I want him to meet my friend Loki,” she said pointing at me. “Sure he won’t mind at all. This way please,” answered Alfred as he lead the way. Joker’s Point Of View: By the look of things they must’ve been staying for dinner since the millionaire playboy was sitting in the dining room and the table was covered in food. Then, Bruce Wayne’s guests walked into the dining room and sat down at the table. It took forever for them to finish eating, when they were done, I told Harley to climb onto the roof of the mansion and find an open window. She then entered the window and she then drilled a hole through the floor and slipped

a grenade I gave her full of laughing gas through the hole, which made the grenade fall into the dining room. Harley threw a rope down through the window and I started to climb up the rope like I was trained to do in military school when I was a boy. It was the only thing I found useful for everyday life. When I was inside the mansion I told Harley to go find Bruce Wayne’s butler and tie him up, meanwhile I waited for Harley to give me a signal to go downstairs when she was done and I walked to the dining room, but Harley ran to the dining room to tie up Bruce Wayne and bring me the weakness. I watched while she tied up Bruce Wayne and noticed that my soon to be enemy wasn’t really laughing anymore, Harley then came running to me with Bruce Wayne’s guest tied up and still laughing then we ran out of the mansion and jumped in the convertible after putting the hostage in the trunk of the car and Harley drove off while I gave out an evil laugh. Loki’s Point Of View: We finished dinner and just sat at the dining table talking about each other’s life and things like that. Then, out of nowhere out came a ball with a smiley face on it. “Take cover!” yelled out Bruce, covering his nose and mouth. Then I saw a green smoke come out of the smiley ball, which seemed very weird. Then I heard Arya and Bruce laughing for no reason. I also started laughing out of nowhere. I really didn’t know what was funny, but I felt a huge urge to laugh. Then after a while, that urge to laugh went away. It was only then that I noticed that Arya was gone. I also noticed that Bruce was tied up to his chair. I immediately ran to his rescue. “Where is Arya?” I asked him while letting him free.

“The Joker and Harley kidnaped her. I fear she might be in great danger,” he responded. “I promise I will bring her back to you Mr. Wayne, I promise,” I told him. I knew that if she died, my entire world would die with her. TO BE CONTINUED IN ISSUE 13...

What to do if one of your friends do the meanest thing and they still expect to be forgiven?

Why do girls gossip a lot in their clique?

How do I get my family to understand me?

Why is yelling at someone about how you honestly feel the hardest thing ever?

What do you do when someone brings up the past?

Stop hanging out with that friend. They’re not worth your time. If someone says they’re sorry it means that they won’t do it again. Apparently that “friend” of yours is just using you. Take my advice and get a better friend.

In my honest opinion they have nothing else better to do their group is just boring because they just sit around have nothing better to do. They think they should get involved with other people lives, which is stupid.

By talking to them and telling them to let you be yourself. They can’t judge you for who you are. Just be you!!! Like they are your family but they have to know they can't change you. You need to tell them how you feel no matter what the consequences are.

If you had already discussed it in the past then they need to just let it go already. If it is something that you’ve never talked about and it makes you feel uncomfortable then tell them if they respect you and want to see you happy then that person will stop bringing it up. In case they keep doing it, ignore them.

You don’t want to feel vulnerable, exposed out in the open. When you tell someone how you feel especially if you yell then you lose your sense of control and you’re afraid/nervous about how that person will respond or react.
