Next to the warehouse is a garage full of British cars. And our co-workers often commute in

theirs. We put these cars to work every day.

When new parts are developed, we test them. If a part is returned, we’ll bolt it on, analyze it, and work

with the manufacturer to make it right.

If we are not happy with a part being on our cars, we wouldn’t think of selling it to you. And, just to make certain you are satisfied, we stand behind our parts

with the longest warranty in the business.

Call us. We’d love to send you a free catalog.

8:00 PMHistory of the Venus Transit

TCMG Meeting held at:Citibank Community Room2350 Honolulu Ave, MontroseGPS coordinates:

N 34.206 W 118.229Meeting room entrance is at the rear of the bank – down-stairs.

Mike Simmons (Steve’s father) will talk to us about a extremely

rare astronomical phenomena that will be occurring on June 5. Venus

will transit between the earth and the sun. Find out why this is signifi cant and the history of the

transit. Some of you will remember Mike who gave a fascinating talk several

years ago at our TCMG meeting on the history of the Mount Wilson Observatory. He then then arranged

and led us on a special tour of the observatory itself which our members

found most interesting.

We are looking for a good turnout at the meeting to support both Mike

and Steve. Bringing a friend is encouraged. The more, the merrier.

Many thanks to Citibank for providing the meeting room in 2012 at no cost.

Don’t Miss It!

Mike Simmons was a telescope operator at Griffi th Observatory in Los Angeles in the mid 1970’s. He went on to become President of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS), founding President of the Mt. Wilson Observatory Association (MWOA), and founding President of Astronomers Without Borders (AWB). In 2003 a star was named after him - Minor Planet 22294 “Simmons.”

Mike Simmons traveled to Iran in 1999 to view the total solar eclipse. He returned to Iran several times later to build international cooperation with the amateur astronomy community in Iran.

Recent technologies have improved the lighting on modern vehicles. This leaves the original TC lighting somewhat in the dark. What can be done

to improve the TC lighting? Tungsten, Halogen, LED? Let’s “see” what is available today.

The following technologies are the choices we have for TC lighting:TUNGSTEN: The TC was born with Tungsten lighting. Same technology as the house light bulb. HALOGEN: The halogen bulb has about the same power draw as a tungsten bulb

but provides 30-40% more light. It is much brighter.LED (light-emitting diode): This is a solid-state technology that is very effi cient. LED has about 1/10th of the power draw compared to tungsten and is bright. Polarity (+/-) sensitive.

See descriptions on page 7

Typical LED replacement

For further information on how best to improve your TC lighting please contact me directly.

Doug Pelton

[email protected]

Depending on the application, the best suited technology may be different. Below is a summary

of items (and item #’s) that are the recommended replacements for each stated application. As an aggregate, this set would provide an “optimum” and complete update to the TC lighting.Headlamp: EL602 – Halogen double fi lament 35W/35W bulb. Same bulb base as original, simply remove old bulb and replace with the new bulb (R&R).Sidelamp (single fi lament): EL610 – LED Positive Ground (+). To install: R&R.Sidelamp (double fi lament): Not availableDash, Map/30 light (single fi lament): EL610 – LED Positive Ground (+). To install: R&R.Dash, Instrument Lighting: EL622 - LED Positive Ground (+), There are 6 screw-in bulbs on backside of dash. (2 Speedo, 2 Tach, 1 Oil, 1 Amp). To install: R&R.Foglamp, FT27: EL625 – Halogen single fi lament 50W bulb. To install: R&R.

Foglamp, SFT27: EL627 – Halogen single fi lament 55W bulb. To install: R&R.For the D-Lamp, you have some additional choices depending on the type and condition of your existing lamp.If you have an original split lens D-lamp with good internal adapters:Tail Lamp: (Stop light bulb) - EL625 – Halogen single fi lament 35W bulb. To install: R&R.Tail Lamp: (License bulb) - EL610 – LED Positive Ground (+). To install: R&R.If you have a single lens D-lamp with a good internal adapter:Tail Lamp: (Stop/tail light bulb) - EL615 – Halogen double fi lament 35W bulb. To install: R&R.If you have an original split lens D lamp with poor internal adapters or you want to convert to internals to a complete new LED panel:Tail Lamp: (Stop/tail light) - EL618 (+) or EL619 (-) LED replacement panel. Installation required. Remove old internals and replace with solid state LED dual panel.

2003 GoF West Funkhana at Long Beach.

Continuing our Kids in TCs theme I had to dig these out of my archives. I could use some fresh material so if you have any photos of your kids, neighbors, friends or ? in a TC (or

any MG) please share them and send to David. I would love to post them. What are we doing to keep the interest in TCs alive?

Previous owner states that it is an EXU model. Engine rebuilt 250 miles ago. Undercarriage/frame/brakes/wiring.....all completely replaced and or rebuilt. Also own a show quality 1954 MG TF 1500

I am the 3rd Owner. This car belonged to my dad, Dr. B.G.Stewart. He gave it to me when I was 4. It has been in my name since 1972. My dad bought it from the widow of the original owner. As far as I know, it has been in Bakersfi eld for 60 years. I still have the Motoring Guild badge from ~1960. I took it off because I didn’t want to lose it. Went to the VARA race on 5/5/12 and saw a TC with a new badge!

Modifi cations: Still running without a top since 1964! Original color was black. My dad painted it yellow, then black. He and his buddy replaced the dash with walnut. The steering wheel is from a 1964 Aston Martin. Original wire wheels were chromed in the mid 1960’s after the yellow paint was topped with black. It had a quarter inch of paint in 1985. I stripped it and painted it black. Again. I used to run two SU pumps, fi nally broke down and bought the electronic SU decoy. Tompkins steering kit, heater from the 1960’s. That’s about it. Would love to have a set of the Alfi ns!My wife had a 1976 MGB when we go married. We sold it and got a 1983 Porsche 911SC. We just sold that after 24 years so the TC has won out twice.

The charity for our Holiday Party toy drive will be the YWCA San Gabriel Valley WINGS Shelter for families seeking refuge from domestic violence and new directions toward sustainable living. Throughout nearly 50 years, this shelter has been providing services for a very large geographical area of the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire. This year it would be nice to focus our giving on older children and teens. Some suggestions to guide your choosing are board games such as Monopoly, Scrabble; jigsaw puzzles of

nature, picturesque or historical places (of interest to adults and older children); DVDs of family-type movies; etc. Please choose gifts that do not require batteries and are non-violent in nature. Please bring unwrapped toy donations to the Holiday Party, and we will deliver them to the shelter. Thank you so very much for your kindness and consideration. Each gift will make life a little happier for someone special. Art and Sarah Ludwick

Alan Moote was a loyal TC fan and long time member of TCMG. He purchased TC7915 in 1999 and participated in club events when work schedules and busy family activities allowed. Alan looked forward to retiring and having more time for hobbies, but by then he and Karen were raising a young grand daughter and he became primary caretaker for three family elders (his father, his aunt, and

Karen’s mother). Just last November he was talking about trying to make GOF in this June. He said it would probably be more years until he really had time for active participation though. He maintained good health until mid April when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It took a good man May 1, 2012. A Vietnam veteran, he is now at the Miramar National Cemetery.

Who says the TCMG does not stay up with technology. Coming into the meeting our members found several laptops, a digital projector and a few electrical cords being set up for the evening’s program. Our President, David Mathison, brought us to some assemblance of order at 8:20pm. To get us to focus, he started on a couple jokes and when he had us hooked jumped into the meeting agenda which started with going over the minutes of the last meeting. No corrections were noted so went on to the Treasurer’s report. Details were posted on the wall and everyone seemed satisfi ed our money is safe. Membership had slipped a little and was down to 97 members after dues deadline had past. The 2012 TCMG Directory was handed out to those present and would be mailed out to the rest of the membership.Gene Olson was not present for upcoming events but David Mathison will contact him to see what is coming up. Suggestions thrown out were Mullen Museum and Murphy Museuem near Oxnard, and maybe combining a double day to Santa Barbara with a visit to a tank museum as well as maybe a visit to the Moss facility. We felt that GoF West was an important part of our aim of perpetuating the use of the TC. Since we have not been

active as a club in helping to run these (although a few of our members, but in different capacities, are instrumental in pulling these off) we voted to lend a hand of donating $500 to the cause. December 2nd is the date of our end-of-the-year party and it will be held at the Sportsmans Lodge again. Menu planning and confi rming the auctioneer are the next steps. Lucy McCanne will organize. Our program for the evening is David Mathison talking on his college days with a TC. Next meeting we are looking at a presentation on an amazing astrological event which will be coming up soon.Old business included a reminder about writing a letter to the TC Owners Club in Australia for the great book they sent us on their history.Susie Coleman provided the refreshments for the evening and we thanked her.David Edgar said Doug Pelton was encouraging us to keep up on the Kids in TCs theme of getting future generations interested in TCs. A Kids Corner will be in future newsletter issues and hopefully kids events as well.Very respectfully submitted by

GoF West 2012

GoF West 2012 will be held in the heart of California’s spectacular Central Coast. This year’s rally/tour will follow the beautiful Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, and there will be extra, optional attractions - Solvang’s Pacifi c Coast Performing Arts Theater and a tour of Vandenberg AFB - in addition to the traditional car display, funkhana, auto-jumble and banquets. Please visit the website at: Gofwest.com for registration info.Joyce Edgar will be doing a presentation at GoF and is hoping many of you will attend.

If you missed David Mathison’s talk at the last meeting, shame on you. You missed a good one. He talked about how he drove his TC back to St. Paul, Minnesota for college. Picture driving a TC in full winter without a heater or defrosters. On one trip he told how he spent a night in a Navajo jail cell just to get warm after a breakdown. He also made the trip back and forth to college with buddies in a Lotus Elite and then a VW bug. Since most his old photos are in storage right now the photos he showed only represent the actual cars and experiences he related to.
