Always connect the Red wire to the 4. positive battery terminal and the Black wire to the negative battery terminal, when using battery power from the vehicle.

Do not use a dirty, corroded or leaking 5. battery. You may suffer injury from acid burns.Verify that installation surface has no 6. hidden components or structural pieces that will be damaged before drilling.

opEration prEcautionSDo not exceed load capacity. 1. Be aware of dynamic loading! Sudden load movement may briefly create excess load causing product failure.

Wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and 2. heavy-duty leather work gloves during operation.

Do not disengage clutch under load. 3. Engage clutch before starting.

Keep clear of Fairlead when operating. 4. Do not try to guide wire rope.

Place heavy rag or 5. carpet over wire rope span 6 feet from hook to help absorb the force released if the wire rope breaks.

Stay out of the direct line that the wire 6. rope is pulling. In case it slips or breaks, it will “whiplash” along this line.

Do not winch a boat or other object with 7. anyone in or on it.

Use a spotter to assist you in assuring 8. that it is safe to operate the winch. Make sure the spotter is out of the way of the vehicle and the wire rope before activating the winch.

Do not use the hand crank, if equipped, 9. to “assist” the winch.

Use as intended only. Do not lift items 10. vertically or use for aircraft purposes.

Prevent entanglement. Do not wear 11. loose clothing or jewelry, as they can be caught in moving parts. Non-skid footwear is recommended. Wear restrictive hair covering to contain long hair.

Inspect before every use; do not use 12. if damaged or parts loose. Examine the winch for structural cracks, bends, damage, frayed wire rope, and any other conditions that may affect the safe operation of the winch. Do not use the winch even if minor damage appears.

Keep children and bystanders away 13. while operating. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Stay alert, watch what you are doing 14. and use common sense when operating. Do not use a winch while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating winches may result in serious personal injury.

Do not overreach. Keep proper footing 15. and balance at all times. This enables better control of the winch in unexpected situations.

People with pacemakers should 16. consult their physician(s) before use. Electromagnetic fields in close proximity to heart pacemaker could cause pacemaker interference or pacemaker failure.

Do not power the hook all the way into 17. the fairlead or winch.

18. Hook onto the object using a pulling point, tow strap or chain. Do not wrap the wire rope around the object and hook onto the

wire rope itself. This can cause damage to the object being pulled, and kink or fray the wire rope.

Secure load after moving. 19. No loCKINg MECHANISM.

do not use a recovery Strap while 20. winching. They are designed to stretch and can suddenly whip back towards the operator during a winching operation.

Keep at least 5 full turns of wire rope on 21. drum.

If wire rope begins to get entangled, stop 22. winch immediately and release wire rope using switch.

MountingEach Winch includes a different type of Fairlead, however, both are mounted using the same procedures.

Select a mounting site on the vehicle bumper, truck bed, boat trailer, or other suitable location, considering the routing needs as described in the “Wiring” section of this manual.

notE: This winch can generate extreme forces. Select a location that can withstand the rated capacity without damage or weakening. You may need to use steel reinforcement plates, or weld on additional bracing, depending on the mounting location.

Mounting the Winch

Mounting using the Mounting plate (sold separately - SKu 60476):

Frame (sold separately, SKU 90476) using supplied bolts, nuts, and washers.

Mount the Winch to the Mounting Frame 2. using Bolts (22) and Nuts (21).

Mount the Solenoid in place using one of 3. the two following “Mounting the Solenoid Assembly” options.

Place the completed Electric Winch 4. assembly at the location where it will be mounted. Use the remaining holes in the Mounting Frame as a template to mark and drill holes for mounting.

Verify that the installation surface has no 5. hidden components or structural pieces that will be damaged before drilling.

Drill the marked locations.6.

If the provided hardware does not 7. accommodate the installation, use SAE grade 5 bolts, or higher, and torque to 35 ft-lb.

Mounting using a different mounting plate:

The plate must be rated to at least the 1. winch’s capacity.

Align the winch perpendicular to center 2. line of the vehicle at the desired location, and mark the locations of the winch base holes. Decide how the Solenoid will be mounted and mount the Solenoid in place using one of the two following “Mounting the Solenoid” options.

Before drilling, verify that the installation 3. surface has no hidden components or structural pieces that will be damaged.

Drill 1/2” holes at the marked locations.4.

Install the winch using the hardware 5. specified on the specification chart.

Mounting the Solenoid assembly

Mounting option 1: Mounting the Solenoid to the Mounting Frame

In this configuration, the Solenoid is connected to the mounting frame (sold separately), in line with the Motor Cables’ (17s & 24s) connection to the Motor Assembly (32).

end of the Motor Assembly and attach the two Motor Cables (17s & 24s) to the motor terminals as shown above.

washers from the four bolts on the base of the Solenoid. Insert the bolts on the base of the Solenoid Assembly (34) through the holes in the Mounting Frame and secure in place by replacing the washers, spring washers and nuts.

Mounting option 2: Mounting the Solenoid to the Solenoid Bracket (40)

In this configuration, the Solenoid is rotated so that the two short cables attached to the Motor Assembly (32) are crossed and the Solenoid Assembly (34) and Solenoid Bracket (33) are positioned over, and attached to, the Motor Assembly.

1. To attach the Solenoid Assembly (34) to the Solenoid Bracket (33):Unthread the nuts, spring washers and a. washers from the four bolts on the base of the Solenoid Assembly (34). Position the Solenoid Bracket (33) b. so the Bracket Mounting Holes face away from the Motor Assembly (32) and the Motor Cables (17s & 24s) on the Solenoid Assembly face the Motor Assembly.Route the Cables through the openings c. in the Solenoid Bracket, then slide the Bolts on the Solenoid Assembly through the holes in the bottom of the Solenoid Bracket (33) and secure the Solenoid Assembly to the Solenoid Bracket by replacing the washers, spring washers and nuts.line up the Solenoid Assembly with the d. end of the Motor Assembly and attach

2. To attach the Solenoid Assembly/Bracket to the Motor Assembly: Slide the Bracket Tie-down Strap (35) a. over the hook in the center of the Solenoid Bracket (33).Rotate the Solenoid Assembly/Bracket b. so that the holes on the side of the Bracket line up with the end of the Tie Bars (28). Unthread the two Bolts (27) and Nuts c. (29) from the end of the Tie Bars (28) and use them to attach the Solenoid Bracket to the Tie Bars. Secure the Solenoid Bracket to the d. Motor Assembly (32) by tightening the Bracket Tie Down Strap (35) around both the Solenoid Bracket hook and the Motor Assembly. Pull Strap until secure.

SEriouS injurY FroM ExploSion duE to SparKing at thE BattErY connEction: unplug the remote control (39) connector from the Socket (6s) on the Solenoid assembly (34) and disconnect the Battery cables (13s & 16s) before making wiring connections.

FroM lEaKing BattErY acid: do not use a dirty, corroded or leaking battery. only use a 12V automotive (or equivalent) battery, in good condition.

Plan a route for the wiring from the 1. point of the vehicle where the winch will be mounted, or used, to the battery. This route must be secure, out of the way of moving parts, road debris, or any possibility of being damaged by operation or maintenance of the vehicle. For example, you may wish to route the wires under the vehicle, attaching it to the frame using suitable fasteners. Do not attach the wires to the exhaust system, drive shaft, emergency brake cable, fuel line, or any other components which may create damage the wiring through heat or motion, or create a fire hazard.

If you drill through the bumper or any 2. part of the body to route the wires, be sure to install a rubber grommet in the hole to prevent fraying of the wires at that point.

Route the Battery Cables (13s & 16s) 3. from the point the winch will be used to

the battery, following the precautions discussed above.

Attach the red Battery Cable (13s) to the 4. Positive Terminal on the battery.

Attach the black Battery Cable (16s) 5. securely to securely directly to the negative terminal of the battery.

6. lift the Socket Cover (2s) exposing the electrical switch connector. Insert the Remote Control (39) connector into the Socket (6s). Disconnect the Remote Control when not in use.

note: The attachment of the Motor Cables (17s & 24s) determines the direction of the Remote Control button. After the unit is mounted and powered, check the direction of the Power In and Power out on the Remote Control button. If you wish to change the direction on the remote control, disconnect the Battery Cables (13s & 16s) from the battery, switch the Motor Cable connections on the Motor Assembly, then reconnect the Battery Cables.

preparing the Wire ropeThe wire rope must be properly coiled 1. under tension to be able to support a load without damage.

Uncoil the wire rope, except for 5 full 2. wraps.

Recoil the wire rope back into the winch 3. under at least 500 lb. of tension.

Examine the wire rope. Do not use the 1. winch if the wire rope is frayed, kinked or damaged.

Fully charge the vehicle’s battery.2.

Check the Winch’s electrical 3. connections. All connections must be tight and clean.

Put the vehicle’s transmission in Neutral.4.

If the vehicle where the winch is 5. mounted is not supposed to be moved, engage the emergency brake and block the wheels using wheel chocks (sold separately).

Ring (15) to the oUT position, slide the loop of the Hook Strap (38) over the hook, then pull on the Hook Strap to pull out the wire rope.

WARNING! Leave at least five full turns of wire rope on the drum.

double line rigging:A double line system should be used a. whenever possible. It reduces the load on the winch, allowing it to work longer with less heat buildup. It reduces load on the winch in two ways:It utilizes the lower layers of wire rope • that have higher capacity, andIt halves the load on the winch through • pulley action.

Make sure that the hook’s safety clasp is fully closed. Do not wrap the wire rope

around the object and hook onto the wire rope itself. This can damage the object being pulled,

and kink or fray the wire rope.

2. Place a heavy rag or carpet (sold separately) over the wire rope span, 6 feet from the hook to help absorb the force released if the wire rope breaks.

Re-engage the clutch by moving the 3. Cam Ring to the in position.

Warning! Do not allow anyone to stand near the wire rope, or in line with the wire rope behind the winch while it is under power. If the wire rope should slip or break, it can suddenly whip back towards the winch, causing a hazard for anyone in the area. Stand well to the side while winching.

4. Attach the Remote Control (39) to the Socket (6s) on the Solenoid Assembly (34).

When it is safe to do so, use the power 5. switch on the Remote Control to retract the wire rope, and winch the item as desired. do not power the hook all the way into the fairlead to prevent damage.

6. Do not operate the winch at extreme angles - do not exceed the angles shown above. Pay attention to how the wire rope is coiling onto the drum. If it is building up on one end of the drum, stop, uncoil the wire rope and recoil it from a less severe angle to prevent damage.

If the object to be pulled must be pulled at an angle in relation to the winch, use a pulley (sold separately) and an anchor point directly in front of the winch, as shown, to keep the cable pull straight.

Warning! 7. Stop the winch and release tension on the wire rope before moving the rag or carpet placed on it.

Do not continue use of the winch until 8. the battery is completely run down.

You may wish to keep the engine running 9. while using this winch, to continually recharge the battery. However, exercise extreme caution when working around a running vehicle.

caution do not use the winch in a constant duty application, it is designed for intErMittEnt uSE onlY. Keep the duration of the pulling job as short as possible. if the motor becomes very hot to the touch, stop and let it cool down for several minutes. do not pull for more than one minute at or near the rated load. do not maintain power to the Winch if the motor stalls. double line rigging will help prevent overloading and should be used whenever practical.

When finished pulling the load, reverse 10. the direction of the winch just enough to release tension on the Steel Cable Assembly (36) so that you can unfasten the Hook from the load and reel in the cable.

To prevent accidents, turn off the winch 11. and disconnect its power supply after use. Clean, then store the winch indoors out of children’s reach. If the cable got wet during use, dry it, then apply a light oil right after use.

FroM accidEntal opEration: unplug the Switch assembly (35) connector from the Socket (6s) on the Solenoid assembly (34) and disconnect the Battery cables (13s & 16s) before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures.

to prEVEnt SEriouS injurY FroM Winch FailurE: do not use damaged equipment. if abnormal noise or vibration occurs, have the problem corrected before further use.

cleaning, Maintenance, and lubrication

BEForE Each uSE,1. inspect the general condition of the winch. Check for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, corroded or loose terminals, and any other condition that may affect its safe operation. Examine the wire rope. Do not use the winch if the wire rope is frayed, kinked or damaged.

aFtEr uSE,2. wipe external surfaces of the winch with clean cloth.

lubricate the wire rope occasionally with 3. a light oil.

The winch’s internal mechanism is 4. permanently lubricated. Do not open the housing. However, if the winch is submerged, it should be opened, dried, and re-lubricated by a qualified technician as soon as possible to prevent corrosion.

cable assembly replacementMove Cam Ring (15) to the oUT 1. position.

Extend the Steel Cable Assembly (36) 2. to its full length, noting how the existing cable is connected to the inside of the drum.

Remove old Cable Assembly and attach 3. new assembly.

caution: Do not replace with inferior cable. Always use the approved replacement part from Harbor Freight Tools.

Retract Cable Assembly onto cable drum 4. being careful not to allow kinking.

Test Electric Winch for proper operation. 5. Refer to the operation Instructions included re-tensioning the wire rope under the “Preparing the Wire Rope” section.
