we look forward to working with the administration staff. To help the hospital improve the facilities and to work to-gether to give the best medical service the hospital can give, he urged.

The hospital has many good plans afoot and it is important to work together as a team to accomplish these plans.

He also acknowledged the contributions of other part-ners who to support the hos-pital like Fred Hollows Foun-dation Eye Clinic, located right here on the hospital grounds and providing eye care services to the Madang community.

Fr. Peter commended Mrs. Maureen Hill and Rotarians who have a continuing sup-port to this hospital as well.

“I’d like to think that Modi-lon Hospital is a caring hospi-tal that its staff loves and cares for the patients. Medicine can cure them physically, but of-ten the love that our nurses give to them, helps them heal better, emotionally and spirit-ually. There is nothing worse than a sick patient coming into the hospital and being ig-nored,” Fr. Peter pleaded.

He also challenged that we may have beautiful buildings but if we don’t have the spirit-uality and human factor in it, these buildings mean nothing.

Acting Interim Chief Ex-ecutive Officer, Dr. Vincent Atua welcomed invited guests, Hospital Board mem-bers, senior management, staff, patients and guardians to the important juncture.

On behalf of the hospital board, Fr. Peter Hunter in his welcome remark said that this inaugural dedication service is a great initiative and shows that “as a commu-nity, we realize the im-portance of God in our lives. To get rid of negatives that cause disharmony and disuni-

ty and change for a positive outlook that will create love, peace and harmony.

He encouraged the staff to work together as a team. We are all part of God’s team and each team member is important.

Fr. Peter said that he observed a common theme in the other dedication ser-vices so far this year and that is of “service.”

“Today in our hospital, we recognize that we serve God and in serving God, we serve one another. We are here to serve, not for money or personal gain but to serve one another and our com-munity,” Fr. Peter urged.

I am extremely pleased to an-nounce one positive milestone for the hospital with the pro-duction of our first newsletter.

This has been a gap and we, the staff, executive management and the Hospital Board are delighted.

At this point, some physical infra-structure developments are taking place, headed with the construction of the four suite operating theatre that is progressing on schedule.

The strength of our human re-source currently surpasses previous years and we are confident will get better.

The Provincial Health Authority is another interesting development for our hospital. We expect the signing of the PHA between the Health Min-ister and Madang Governor in the near future. This should bring about the establishment of this authority through an Order of the Minister in the National Gazzette. It is an im-portant step to streamline the human resource, assets and finances to ulti-mately provide a unified efficient and effective health service right down to the bulk of the population who are in the rural areas.

Serve with love, for-giveness and compassion was the message delivered by presiding minister, Pas-tor Kario Veneo of Four-square Church during the inaugural Dedication Ser-vice of the Modilon Gen-eral Hospital, in Madang on February 11, 2015.

Many leaders use the “big men mentality” style of leadership, to be served. But as a Christian nation, it is important to follow God’s word to direct our lives,” Pastor Kario said.

He said that it is difficult to serve with love and forgiveness because of our human prejudic-es and limitations, which dic-tates how we react to others who have disabilities. It takes a special kind of person to love a cerebral palsy victim, who lost control of his muscle coordina-tion,” said Pastor Kario.

“If we are Christians, we must choose to love and forgive. It is

a choice that we make in order to live a life that God expects us to live in this world. Our service is not a chore, when we love,” he exhorted.

them recover from their ail-ment. A little care given on their behalf further lightens their souls from burdens they carry, thus the board’s decision to introduce a chaplaincy ser-vice in the hospital.

“The doctors and nurses do not have time to give attention to patients in this vital area of health care. But a chaplain supported by the churches and facilitated by the government through the health department will put into place the spiritual help, our pa-tients need. A chaplain’s position will be in place by the end of this year,” he said.

In conclusion, members of the management team and other senior staff were then invited to the front for special prayers and dedication of their leadership to God. In exhortation, Pastor Ka-rio pronounced God’s blessing with the following words, “Today as we pray to God on your behalf, for your service to this hospital, we pray that the peace of God will rule upon your hearts; that the staff and manage-ment of this hospital will work together in peace and harmony.”

is now cleaner and a more

conducive space to work in.

Through the initiative of Sr.

Leanne Barnett, an Australian

volunteer nurse at the Accidents

and Emergency Ward, Ela Enter-

prise Ltd came to their assitance.

The company donated paint, two

hospital beds and other accesso-

ries. The company also volun-

teered its staff to clean and repaint

the ward.

Dhawal Patel, Managing Direc-

tor of Ela Enterprise Madang in

officially handing over the beds

and accessories, said that Ela En-

terprise is very happy to contrib-

ute to the hospital. It is the com-

pany’s community service and

social responsibility to assist

wherever needed. He also assured

the company’s continuing assis-

tance.

tions which has made the ward

look better and more pleasant

working environment. “The ward

has a long wish-list and any assis-

tance would be highly appreciat-

ed,” she said.

“The Accident and Emergency

ward is the busiest section in the

hospital. Day and night, we are

open to all patients, from kids to

adults, and this is the eye of the

hospital. I want this ward to be

looking good and running effi-

ciently. My dream is for Modilon

Hospital to have the best A&E

ward in the country,” Sr. Barnett

expressed.

“We appreciate Ela Enter-

prise’s contributions. We also

want to establish a rapport with

the community and other compa-

nies in town. As a gesture of ap-

preciation for assistance to the

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE:

To the immediate and extended family of our

late colleague and friend, the late Nurse

Catherine Michael, our sincere sympathy.

Her passing is a great loss to the nursing

fraternity at Modilon General Hospital.

Nurse Catherine died on 22nd February, 2015

after suffering from a long terminal illness. She

served 27 years in the health sector, 18 of

which was at Modilon Hospital.

She comes from Utu in the Transgogol area of

the Madang Province.

REST IN PEACE, CATHERINE!!

Buried under this pile of dirt, (picture on the right) are eight bodies. They were once someone’s son

or daughter, brother or sister, or family member. Today, the four adult males and four adult fe-males finally rest, after more than 12 months, housed in cold storage

container.

On the evening of Friday 13 February, 2015, they were silently laid to rest, by total strangers, who were of no blood relations but duty bound, by their line of work.

They now lie in repose also surrounded by strangers who were kind enough to give this piece of land as their resting

place.

Acting Interim Chief Execu-tive Officer, Dr. Vincent Atua said the hospital had to make this decision because the bodies

had been in the morgue for more than 12 months and had started deteriorating, causing health risk to the workers and community who needed the

mortuary service.

“We need to raise awareness

to the general public to be re-sponsible for their dead. It is unfair to dump your dead and walk away with no care. The hospital bears the cost of the

burial ,” he added.

routine activities. However, staff realize

they also need to unwind.

The overall objective of this concert is

to create greater involvement of health workers and patients and thus create a

friendly working environment.

It is hoped that this show will be the vehicle on which the social and spiritual and emotional aspects of both staff and

patients can be further enhanced.

The idea has received overwhelming support from both the management and staff. The “Healthy Boys” music group together with Nurses Christian Fellowship will be the focal point for making this ac-

tivity become a reality.

4th of April 2015.

This music talent idea emanated from the inaugural dedication service on Febru-ary 11 this year. These presentations will

either be in song, drama or skid.

The theme of this concert will be “Take my life,” originating from a hymnal, offer-ing one’s life, hands, lip, intellect and all

for God’s glory.

Delivery of quality health service and
