December ProgramBy PaulAfkiss

The annual Holiday Gift Exchange KCSDMeeting will be December 12th at Marci Knight'sin La Mesa. This is always a fun meeting with alot of excellent food shared by our members.

Our own Captain Jack has agreed tocoordinate the gift exchange. lf you wish toparticipate, please bring a wrapped gift(suggested $15 to $25 value). Each individual (orcouple) who brings a gift will draw a randomnumber from the hat to determine when they willselect a gift.

The host will provide the beverages for thepotluck and we are asking members, based onyour last name, to bring an item to share:

. Appetizers - A through M

. Desserts - N through Z

Thank youBy PaulAfkiss

The November meeting at California KoiFarms was a beautiful day and a fun afternoon.Takemi Adachi was a gracious host; evenmaking deals with members as they found a fishthey just had to have. Beth even went home witha free frog that was found in the pond with thebaby Koi.

Tom Graham provided the colorcommentary as Takemi jumped into the pond asBob Welsh worked the net. In the pond Takemiinitially culled out the bigger Koi, less the one thatgot away, and some huge goldfish. He thenmoved the tub of fish to a tank where he thenselected the Koi that were ready to move out ofthe grow-out pond; returning the others to thepond.

Thank you to Takemi for inviting the club tohis farm and Tom Graham, and Bob Welsh fortheir help in creating a fun day for all of us Koienthusiasts.

Notes from the Board

Our new grow out contest began at the Novembermeeting with a nice collection of small ochibashigures distributed to the participants through adouble blind drawing -- in other words no oneKoi Club of San Diego -- December 2010

really got to pick their fish , you got one in arandom drawing. Fish sizes ranged around 5 -6 inches with most in the middle of that range.Jack Chapman measured each and every one.Matt Rhoades photographed them and with thehelp of Linda Pluth, Matt's son Cole, and AlPierce, they were bagged and numbered anddistributed. Early reports are that they areaggressive feeders so when they return nextyear for measuring we should see some realgrowth.

In 2006 we lost Dutch Highwarden tocancer. Dutch had been our Koi Person of theyear in 2001. His wife, Risa Highwarden, hasbeen fighting cancer for the last two years andentered hospice shortly before Veteran's dayjust past. The reporls from the doctors were thatshe would not last much longer. When shepasses she will have services in the MilitaryMuseum in Balboa Park, just as they were heldfor Dutch. When arrangements have beenmade, they will get them posted on the websitefor those who wish to attend.

And on another note, Diablo MiniStorage, the storage unit that we use to storeour show and auction and pond tour andeverything else equipment and supplies ishaving the Red Cross bloodmobile at their siteon Wednesday, December 29 from 9:30 AM to3:30 PM. All current tenants that give blood willreceive 15% discount off January 2011 monthlyrent. Because we are a group, they will creditup to three of us for the discount -- that comeslo 45% by my calculation. lf you reside in thearea and can give blood, please considerstopping by on that day, identify yourself as aKoi CLub of San Diego member, renting unit #427, and help us out.

Our October pond tour was a successwith eight magnificent ponds. Although theweather began cool, cloudy and with a light rain, the skies cleared and we had a good turn out ofvisitors. In all we had a gross income of 2125from the pond tour, with the tour brochurecompletely paying for itself with ads. A bigWelcome and Thank You to Inland Koi Societywho brought a bus load of Inland Club folks toview the ponds.

Notes - continuedAs you may have noticed in the treasurer's

statement on page 5, the increased income isfrom both pond tour and the early Show boothpayments. Over the next months you will see alarge amount of funds going out as we pay theremainder of the rental to the Fairgrounds for ourFebruary Show space, awards and other showexpenses.

The show Awards Banquet will be off sitethis year at the Carl Strauss restaurant 10minutes south of Del Mar right off l-5 and l- 805freeways. Banquet tickets will be around $45.00with a no host bar. On, and with cheesecake fordessert. Yum.

With the holidays upon us, it's almost timefor that February madness we call the Show. Andour annual song and dance: Show sign ups, show raffle tickets, show raffle prizes, show entryform. Show. Show. Show.

Our February show is, without a doubt, thehigh point of our year. lt will beheld at the Del MarFair Grounds February 19 & 20 of 2011 in theActivity Center. John Svelan has already begun toline up the vendors who help make the wholething possible. At the show you will find aconcentration of all things pond and koi - pumps, koi food, tanks, nets, at work, filters, and, ofcourse, fish. Lots and lots of fish. Fish to viewbecause they are entered into the show, and fishthat can be yours from the dealers who havebrought some of their best for our discerningeye. There will be some truly great dealsbetween the vendors and the show auction.

Come and help. Clear your calendar andplan on spending a day or two of the weekendwith us. You'll be rubbing shoulders with theneophyte and the experienced koi keeper. You'llhave a chance to hear the judges talk about whythey chose one particular koi for an award overanother. lF you come seeking one particularkohaku, chances are you'll find it among thetanks teeming with young fish looking for a newhome.

We need help in all areas. We are allvolunteers and there are jobs for everyone fromsetting up tanks on Friday morning, February 1B

to tear down on Sunday evening, February 20.Check in and entry of fish need computeroperators, raffle ticket sales need people willing

Koi Club of San Diego -- December 2010

to talk about their ponds and shill raffle tickets, hospitality, judge drivers, banquet centerpieces, water quality, the list goes on and on with jobsthat can be done at home and jobs that requirethe whole weekend. Muscle only on some, brains only on others, probably a combinationof both for most.

Sign up sheets will be circulating at thenext couple of meetings. Please sign up. Orcall Bill Thompson at (760) 479-1447.

This is the month for the second earlybird raffle ticket drawing. lF you have noralready picked up your tickets at a meeting, theywill be included with this newsletter in the largeenvelope you received. At the meeting we willdraw one ticket from those stubs turned in for a$50.00 gift card to Footlocker. Then theremaining tickets will all go into the generalraffle to be drawn from at the Show for theGeneral Raffle prizes.

Which brings us to the need for Showraffle prizes. There will be two categories -- theGeneral Raffle and the banquet drawing. Thebanquet will be koi related -- koi food, clothingitems, anything that stands out as appealingmore to the koi enthusiast than to the generalpublic. Our General Raffle will be for thegeneral public with gift cards, local attractions, and donated items. We particularly looking fordonations of items since the top prize this yearwill be a $500 gift card rather than a largescreen TV. For each item donated at theDecember of January meeting you will receive afree meeting drawing ticket.

lncluded in this newsletter is the SHowentry for m for the February Show. Additionalforms are available on the website. When youfeed your living jewels, begin to identify which ofthem you are going to take to the show.

Also in the mail, and under separatecover, is the winter KCSD roster, names andcontact information for KCSD members.
