three times a week and just wheat germ.Probably, by the time you read this, I've gone tonot feeding because the water had gottenbelow 50 degrees.

The 2011 Koi Show (over Presidentsweekend in February) is approaching fast. Ourvery own "lifetime-appointed Show Chairman"(wink wink), Bill Thompson, is looking forvolunteers for many of the jobs that are neededto run a successful show; so please stepforward and do your part. Thank-you John foryour continued efforts.

Speaking of John, it just happens that theJanuary 9th meeting will be at John Svelan'shouse in Mira Mesa. He has a fantastic pondsetup. Can't wait to see it again. Our guestspeaker will be Steve Drake (AKCA Judge andfellow club member). He is to talk on selectingkoi to bring to the big show.

There is a reservationdeadline of February 1st. The awards banquetwill include the usual Koi Related drawing of foodand koi stuff as well as simply announcingawards, so plan on attending. Consider it abelated Valentine's gift to yourself.

photographs can be loaded easily into theshow registration system. Having two memorysticks/chips means the photographer can takepictures while the fish is being measured andclassified, take the data back to the computersand go right back to shot another fish withouthaving to delay the process.

Norm will also be working with thosewho signed up to help with data entry on thecomputer system.

What's that? You haven't volunteeredyet? lt's not too late. A list circulated at theDecember meeting (and at the Novembermeeting) but you can always call Bill Thompson(760) 479-1447 and get your name on his listsof volunteers.

And as a side note, the latest word fromAKCA (Associated Koi Clubs of America, ourumbrella organization of fellow Koi Clubs) isthat everyone wants future seminars to have akoi show right along with the seminar-- just likewe did two years ago.

And if you are reading this beforeDecember 29, please consider the presence ofthe American red Cross Bloodmobile present atour KCSD storage company, (Diablo MiniStorage, 2280 Avenida Del Diablo, Escondido,92029). For each of our members who stop bybetween 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM on that day andgive blood we will receive 15% off the Januaryrent. One more way to help out the club.

As you may have noticed, many of youalso received a copy of the Decembernewsletter through your e-mail. lf you did notreceive the newsletter this way, and wish to doso, please e-mail Tamsie Pierce ([email protected]) to get your e-mail on file. On themembership renewal form you might havefound a little box to check if you wish this to bethe only way you receive the newsletter. lf youmissed the box, or simply want to confirm, please e-mail her as well. Tom Graham is kindenough to send out the file. We will continue tosent hard copies to everyone for a while, and, ofcourse, to anyone who wants to remain on theUS mail mailing list.

December Nights at the Japanese FriendshipGardenBy Matt Rhoades

Bob Welsh and Matt Rhoades were invited to bedocents at the Japanese Friendship Garden koipond for December Nights at Balboa Park, whichhappened over the weekend of December 3-5,2010. Bob set out a beautiful display of koimagazines, a koi reference poster, and KCSDmembership pamphlets for the general public tolearn more about koi and our organization.

These koi-kichi gentleman talked to wellover 200 people that pass by the garden'soutstanding pond area, Many were very interestedin the hobby and quite dazzled by the story of theoldest recorded living koi (226 years). Many ofthe kids in attendance were able to feed the koiwith food provided by the club members present.

It was a treat to see their expressions ofwonder as the koi came to the surface to feed. I

believe I witnessed the beginning of some futurekoi-kichi at this event.

January ProgramBy PaulAfkiss

Our January meeting should give each ofus a fin-up for our annual February Koi Show -Steve Drake will talk about Selecting Koi to Show.Steve is an AKCA Certified Judge, a regularexhibitor at our February Koi Show and (moreimportantly) a member of our club. Steve'sknowledge allows him to look for young small Koiwhich might grow into that show quality Koi of thefuture. He will share his thoughts and experiencein selecting and showing Koi. An just maybe, thiswill be the show here you win an award orpurchase a new Koi that will be next year'schampion.

The Show is Goming. The Show is GomingBy Tamsie Pierce

With the Holidays just about behind us it'stime to start preparing for the 24 th Annual KoiShow. A Koi Show is our opportunity to displayour fish for the general public and share our loveof these finny jewels.Koi Club of San Diego -- January 2011

lf you have never been to a Koi Show youare in for a treat. Along with tank after tank full ofbeautiful fish, we will have vendors set up allalong the edges with fish for sale, pondequipment, art, clothing, all things available thatrelate to koi.

For those of us who wish to show ourfish off to a larger audience than the 35 or 40that normally attend a meeting at your home, now is the time to observe your fish and decidewhich ones are the lucky fish to get to travel toDel Mar for a weekend getaway.

Your first step is to pick the fish to go. Besure there are no signs of disease (they will besent back home with you), Dig out the showentry packet that arrived last month with theshow raffle tickets and new club roster. ldentifyyour fish and guess as close as you can (ormeasure) the sizes of your fish for the entryform. Remember that a 13" fish in the 12 - 15inch category is less likely to win a top prizethan a 14.5" fish of the same caliber. Bigger isbetter and a fish near the top size of its categoryis likely to do better than one that just squeaksinto the category. Be sure your fish is healthy, and be sure your fish is in the peak of condition- color bright and thick, eyes clear, fins intact. Ingeneral as close to the condition you wouldconsider purchasing it from a dealer as you, theowner can get that fish in your pond.

Next step is to attend the Januarymeeting and pick up tips on catching andbagging your fish for transport. We will havebags on hand for your fish at $1.00 each. lt isbest to use new bags each time you bag yourfish to avoid any cross contamination ofdisease and to prevent any chance the bag isworn or damaged and liable to leak.

You want a bag that allows the fish to liestraight, not with its tail curled or pectoral finscramped. For the jumbo fish we frequently seethe bag laid on its side when the fish is too longto have the fish lie on the bottom and the bagupright. And remember that when you are liftingand transporting the fish you are also lifting andtransporting that much water and water weighs-- a lot. You want enough water in the bag tojust cover the top fin of the fish, not too muchmore. lt certainly needs to cover the gillsContinued on next page- Show

page 3

Page 4: January 2011 KCSD Newsletter

Show Continuedthoroughly. The top portion of the bag needs to beoxygen, which will be mixd with the water as thebag is transported through the surface of hewater. lf you do not have access to pure oxygenfor the bag, fill it with air from an air compressoror, if the bag is small enough, from your ownlungs. And then when you arrive at the show besure to let the check in table know that your fishhas no oxygen. We will have several bottles onhand to top off bags that need it.

In February, cease feeding your fish aweek before the show in order to clean out itsdigestive tract. -- No one likes to see the evidenceof fish swimming in their own toilet. With aFebruary show that is relatively easy since thepond temperature is likely to be down lowenough you should have stopped feedinganyway.

On the day you take your fish to the show, net them carefully with the biggest net you haveand can handle to avoid loosing scales or tearingfins. Slide it into the bag with sufficient water, topoff with oxygen, rubber band he top and transportit to Del Mar. The bags ride nicely in a box in thetrunk, or barring that they can ride on your backseat with a towel or blanket over them to keep thefish darkened and quiet.

At the show you will be assigned a tank foryour fish. The show is "English" Style, whichmeans all your fish are in one tank. In "JapaneseStyle," all fish of a given type and size (15"Kohaku for instance) are kept together. Judgingis easier in Japanese style, but exposure todisease is less in English Style.

On Saturday morning the judges willjudge the fish, one against another in the samesize and same type. By Saturday afternoonjudging is finished and results are posted.Saturday evening is the awards banquet, alwaysan exciting time.

And on Sunday afternoon you rebag yourfish and escort them home to bask in your pondwhile you display your awards.

The whole show is stressful on the fishwith them being netted and tubbed at leas a halfdozen times, unless they are considered formajor prizes at which point there is still morecatching and tubbing. The cooler water will helpyour fish cope, as will your care.Koi Club of San Diego -- January 2011

And what about you? You've brought yourfish, bought your banquet ticket. There's somuch more for you to do.

This show is our biggest display of koifor the year and we need all the help you cangive. We will be staffing registration, measuringthe fish, tubbing for the judges, selling raffletickets, answering questions, preparing ajudges luncheon, the banquet decorations forSaturday, and of course, the biggest eventwhich is simply setting up the tanks and then atthe end breaking them down and returning stuffto the storage unit. On the Monday after theshow, weather permitting, we will be cleaningthe tanks and preparing them for the next year'sshow. At the January meeting a sign up sheetwill be circulating, if there is some job you cando, or would like to learn, please do not hesitateto put your name down. One of the jobs, forinstance, will be water quality -- keeping those50 some tanks looking clear and clean withoutthe elaborate filters we have on our homeponds. A good time to pitch in and learn howso you can use some of those skills back athome.

And one final note. Our 21st Annual showin 2008 is a warm up for the show in 2009--which will be the same and yet quite different. In 2009 we will scale back the show somewhatfor we will be hosting the 2009 AKCA Seminar. The Seminar will add in workshops, a pondtour, and a week of Koi events to the usualshow schedule. Come and participate this year,so next year you can look at the jobs and say,"That was easy. l'll help out."
