PLEA 2013 – Sustainable Architecture for a Renewable Future

The goal of the International Conference ‘PLEA 2013’ is to promote the discussion on holistic, quality-based approaches to future challenges in architecture and planning.Within the conference we want to concentrate on the quality of buildings and neighbourhoods, and the quality of life of their inhabitants, as well as the liveability of our cities.

The local theme to the international conference is the decision by the German parliament to abandon nuclear power while increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in all sectors. This provoked high activity in research and has advanced the paradigm shift from buildings considered as energy consumers to buildings as part of the energy producing system. In addition to energy related aspects, long-term thinking as well as social, environmental and economic aspects are key issues for the creation of future oriented buildings and communities. The cultural dimension of architecture is of central importance.

Scientists, planners, architects, engineers, stake holders, entrepreneurs and students from around the world are invited to present and discuss innovative approaches and future developments for new buildings as well as for the existing building stock.

Conference Topics:The conference will focus on different scales and dimensions of architecture addressing regions, cities, buildings and systems as well as components, elements and materials. At the same time we want to integrate cross cutting topics, addressing processes, tools, measures for quality control and case studies.
