The reason for The season This manger scene photo was taken on Friday, Dec. 17 with the help of the kind staff at The Presbyterian Church in Coshocton. The baby Jesus is not placed in the manger until Christmas Eve and the staff kindly allowed us to do so for this photograph. It was a bit surreal and humbling to carry the baby Jesus – yes, even a plastic baby Jesus – back to the church for safekeeping until Christmas Eve. Hopefully, we can all ponder and reflect on the true reason for the season this Christmas. BEaCon PhoTo By Mark ForTunE

Wool, pelt, and mohair benefits available through fsaPrice support benefits are available through the Farm Service Agency (FSA) office for producers of wool, mohair, and unshorn lamb pelts. These benefits become available when market prices fall below the support prices. For ungraded wool in Ohio, the support price was $0.40 per pound in 2010 and will be the same rate in 2011. National average wool prices averaged around $0.11 per pound this past year, so this translates into an FSA support payment of $0.29 per pound for shorn wool and $1.99 per head for unshorn lambs sold for slaughter. Mohair producers have seen more strength in the markets for their product. FSA supports a mohair price of $4.20 per pound. In 2010, the national average marketing price was above this rate in all but three weeks from Mid-February through early March. Only applications submitted during that timeframe or mohair marketed during those weeks would be eligible for assistance. Applying for these price support benefits through FSA is a two step process. The first step requires the applicant to file Page 1 of form CCC-633EZ, which is the LDP benefit agreement. This agreement must be filed prior to the producer losing control or ownership of the commodity. The Coshocton FSA office is currently accepting submissions of form CCC-633EZ for the 2011 marketing year. This will cover wool
and unshorn lambs that are sold in the upcoming year. For wool or unshorn lambs sold in 2010, this form must have been filed prior to sale. For those that did have this in place, the second step of the process is to provide the FSA office a record of your 2010 marketing. The deadline to submit this production evidence is Jan. 31, 2011. If you have wool stored on farm which was shorn in 2010, there is still an opportunity to receive benefits on that specific quantity. Producers can still file for CCC-633EZ for 2010 on farm stored wool, since the commodity has not been sold or marketed. These applicants can file the required applications all in one trip by certifying the amount of wool they have on farm. This deadline is also Jan. 31, 2011. Wool, unshorn lamb, and mohair producers who have questions on this program can contact the Coshocton Farm Service Agency office at (740) 622-8087, Extension 2. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination in its programs on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.) Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (Braille, large print, audiotape, etc.) should contact USDA’s TARGET Center at 202-720-2600 (voice and TDD). To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326W, Whitten Building, 14th and Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20250-9410 or call 202-720-5964 (voice or TDD). Ahhh, the packages, gifts, boxes and bags. Which to open first? This is such a special time of the year and honestly, I was having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit until we spent some time with my wife’s family this past weekend. When you have a two year old in the family that loves to sing songs like, “The snowman had a carrot nose until a bunny came along and it went crunch, crunch, crunch, etc. etc.”, it’s kind of hard not to enjoy the moment. The next step is to jam all of my Christmas shopping into one afternoon – hopefully it will be snowing. Then, its Christmas music to accompany the wrapping. Now, I’ll never go down in history as a “gifted” wrapper – in other words, I am not destined for the gift wrapping team at Macy’s in New York. Give me a brown paper grocery bag or some old newspaper any day! Ha, ha just kidding on that one. But I’ve done it. Seriously folks, I’ve always felt that the more scotch tape you use – the better. That’s what holds those “perfectly” bound ends of wrapping paper on the package. So buy some stock in the 3M company – because Mark is about to “unwrap” the wrapping for Christmas 2010. And of course I always wait until the afternoon of Christmas Eve to start wrapping. Why start early? That spoils the fun.
Here are some not so serious Christmas gift wishes for 2010. Sort of. A Browns over Steelers victory on Jan. 2. The ethanol plant back up and operating in 2011. An announcement sometime in 2011 that the four lane highway
is going to happen. The Buckeyes beating Arkansas of course. A technology based company announcing that they are going to come to Coshocton and employ 100 people with good paying jobs. AMC announcing a return of the series “Rubicon”. That might be enough right there. As we come to a close in the year 2010, I would like to thank everyone in the community for supporting The Beacon this year. Our home delivered readership continues to climb each week, with now over 6,100 Beacon’s delivered to area homes through the mail each week. We also greatly appreciate the positive feedback received throughout the year. I know we have many areas in which we can improve and our goal for the New Year will be to continue providing a publication that focuses on the positive events that happen throughout our community in 2011. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Coshocton County! And may everyone take some time to reflect on the true reason for the season.

Central ohio Technical College and ohio Christian University sign dual admission agreementA groundbreaking dual admission agreement between Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) and Ohio Christian University (OCU) is the first such agreement of its kind for COTC, and will provide a direct route to a bachelor’s degree for more students at the two-year college. The agreement allows dual admission to both institutions, wherein a student can apply, be admitted, and attend both COTC and OCU simultaneously, if desired. College-level course credits earned at COTC will be applicable toward OCU bachelor’s degree programs in business including management, logistics, and healthcare management concentrations, leadership and ministry, psychology, and substance abuse counseling. Students simultaneously attending both institutions will be eligible for dual services such as library privileges, advising, and academic support. COTC President Bonnie L. Coe, Ph.D., and OCU President Mark A. Smith, Ed.D., signed the agreement on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at the COTC Newark
campus. “This dual admission agreement will afford COTC students additional career options and opportunities for continued education and professional advancement as they complete a bachelor’s degree at OCU,” said Coe. “We are extremely pleased to partner with OCU to bring about these further educational access opportunities.” COTC already has articulation agreements for the transfer of COTC course credit with

1950December 23rd, 1950
William Henderson Smart celebrated his 100th birthday at his home in Coshocton. He was the last of the Ohio Canal boat captains, having started as a tug hand at the age of 12. He worked hard and saved his money and by the time he was 22, he bought his own mule-powered barge and carried all types of merchandise and grain. He was also a water foreman at Adams Mills for 21 years and operated the locks at Zoar for two years. He was also employed for about 10 years as an operator for the Ohio Power Co. hydro plant in Roscoe. Bill’s philosophy of life is that plenty of good, honest work never hurt anybody.
1960December 25th, 1960
Residents of Coshocton County angrily switched off their radios Christmas morning as Bing Crosby started singing, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas”. They didn’t need to dream. All they had to do was look out their windows at the 10 inches of the fluffy white stuff on the ground. The weather forecast didn’t look promising either as freezing rain and more snow was predicted to fall Christmas morning. There was no holiday for the city and county street crews who were out all day trying to clear the roads. However, the kids seemed to be enjoying their white Christmas as many of them were outside bundled up against the cold and sledding down the many mountains of snow. Many adults were happy too as Monday was considered a legal holiday because of the Sunday Christmas and they did not have to battle the snow and ice on the way to work.
1970December 22nd, 1970
More than 200 families attended the Forty and Eight’s 24th annual Christmas party at the American Legion. The children were entertained by Mrs. G.A. Foster, who read them “The Night Before Christmas” and then they all watched, “The Little Engine That Could”. Santa Claus himself also made a guest appearance along with two of his elves. The Girl Scouts were also on hand assisting the children throughout the party. They, along with their leaders, also made all the decorations featured at the party.
1980December 28th, 1980
The Coshocton swim team was having the first ever meet between the current varsity team and the alumni. The alumni squad had members competing from every Coshocton varsity swim team, all the way back to the beginning in 1970. The honorary coach for the meet was Roger Tom who was the first swim coach at Coshocton until 1978. The meet was originally thought of by the then current swim coach, Cliff Roahrig who was a member of the first swim team in Coshocton. The meet was scheduled for Jan. 3 at 2:30 p.m.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
More horses wanted for the 2011 Canal Days paradeEveryone loves a parade and the 2011 Coshocton County Canal Days parade is expected to be a memorable one. As the New Year approaches and plans are made for the Coshocton County Bicentennial, thoughts turn to the history and heritage of our county. August may seem a long way off, but the Bicentennial committee has been considering the Canal Days parade for months. The members of the committee are all in agreement concerning one major facet of the parade in particular – horses.
“We’ve always had a nice turn-out of mounted and horse-drawn entries,” said Bicentennial committee member Jim McClure; and he and the CCB committee would certainly like to see those numbers increase in 2011. “We’d like to reach out to the groups who always come and ask them to bring along more members this year.” Coshocton County welcomes all comers to the parade who enjoy celebrating in our history, not just Coshocton residents. “We’d also like to see more groups and individuals outside Coshocton County attend,” he said. More horses increase both the size of the parade and its historical presence. “…so we can emphasize the importance of the Coshocton County Bicentennial edition of the Canal Days parade, and the role horses and horse-drawn conveyances and equipment played in our heritage,” McClure said. Those who have regularly participated in the parade with a float pulled by car or tractor are urged to consider a horse-drawn float this year. McClure assures that it’s not required, but the committee would appreciate everyone’s attempts to get as many horses involved as possible. So please pass the word. If you or someone you know owns one or more horses and would like to ride mounted or participate with a horse-drawn float or wagon, information is available by contacting Carol Remington at the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, at 622-5411, or Jim McClure at 622-2218. For more information on the Bicentennial’s schedule of events and activities throughout 2011, visit Coshocton County Bicentennial on Facebook or watch the official Web site for continual updates: www.coshoctonbicentennial.com.
Museum encounter for children The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is offering a class in still-life drawing on Wednesday, Dec. 29 from 1 – 3 p.m. The instructor will choose objects from the Museum’s Coshocton Collects exhibit to be the subject for the artwork. Participants will learn methods of drawing with a charcoal pencil and study perspective and shading. At the end of the class, students will be given their charcoal pencil and several sheets of sketch paper to continue honing their skills at home. Instructor Jen Bush, a staff member at JHM, received a Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in sculpture. Getting out of the house and into a creative frame of mind can be just what the whole family needs after a week of indoor activities. The cost is $7 and $5 for Friends of the Museum. For more information or to make a reservation for Museum Encounters for Children, call the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum at 622-8710 or e-mail at [email protected]. The museum is located in Roscoe Village at 300 N. Whitewoman Street, Coshocton, OH 43812.

CoTC presents second annual Transitions awardCentral Ohio Technical College (COTC) awarded its second annual Transitions Award to Bonnie J. Buchanan, MBA, COTC assistant professor and lead instructor for Business Management Technology. The award was announced by COTC President Bonnie L. Coe, Ph.D., during the college’s 2010 Winter Commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 10, in the John Gilbert Reese Center on the COTC Newark campus. Buchanan, a St. Louisville resident, was nominated for the award by fellow COTC faculty member Rose Cost, Ph.D. In her nomination letter, Cost wrote, “Bonnie cares
about the college, and most of all, she cares about the students, their activities, concerns, and interests.” Buchanan earned an Associate of Applied Business degree with Honors from COTC, where she was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges, and received a number of student awards. She graduated magna cum laude from Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, and has a Master of Business Administration from Franklin University. COTC’s Alumni Council created the Transitions Award to recognize outstanding COTC alumni, faculty, and staff who have made the transition from student to partner in career development, making a difference in the lives of current students. “Many students have commented to me how much they admired Bonnie’s teaching capabilities in the classroom,” Cost also wrote. “They also said that Bonnie has the ability to
‘make students want to learn.’” COTC’s Alumni Program officially kicked off in the autumn of 2007 and continues to gain momentum as a direct result of committed alumni volunteers. To learn more about COTC’s Alumni Program and to update your contact information with the college, visit www.cotc.edu and click on the Alumni link, or call Jennifer Roberts, director of development, at (740) 364-9644. Central Ohio Technical College is a two-year college dedicated to providing high quality, accessible programs of technical education in response to current and emerging employment needs, as well as encouraging the professional development of students, staff, faculty, and administrators to assist them in achieving their maximum potential. COTC operates campus locations in Newark, Coshocton, Knox and Pataskala.

United Way of Coshocton County seeks new executive directorThe United Way of Coshocton County seeks to hire a proven leader as its new executive director. Beccy Porteus, president of the Board of Control, said the organization is looking for an individual who will provide strong, innovative and collaborative leadership for the United Way organization in developing financial resources and identifying and responding to community needs. In addition, the executive director will maintain accountability for the overall operational and fiscal integrity

to how much they care for the mission they serve. It has been an honor to work with them and with our outstanding Board of Control that guides United Way in our work for Coshocton County.” Any person interested in applying for the part-time position should inquire through OhioMeansJobs.com or contact Jed McCoy at Coshocton County Opportunity Links at 295-7519. TeaM rine-o places in ohio Triple Crown bbq seriesCoshocton was represented by TEAM RINE-O, in Ohio’s first BBQ Series. The Ohio Triple Crown BBQ Series began in Marietta, moved to Kettering and the final stop was in Nelsonville. TEAM RINE-O traveled and competed in all three contests. The team finished strong with their best effort to date. In Marietta’s Brickstreet BBQ, they finished in 37th place. At the Ohio Veterans BBQ Cookoff in Kettering, they placed 48th. In the final contest in Nelsonville, for the Ohio Smoked Meat & BBQ Festival, they placed 24th. As you walk around and talk with the Pit Masters, they all have a common goal. These Smokologists all are wanting “The Call” or to make “The Walk”. The call is when your name is announced to the crowd as being in the top 15 teams that competed. The walk is when your team makes the top 10 and walks to the stage to collect an award plus a check. TEAM RINE-O, in their first year, are still learning and have been steadily fine-tuning
their smoking skills. Competition BBQ is not the same kind of BBQ prepared for your friends, or what you find in many BBQ joints. BBQ Judges are not looking for that” Melt in your mouth” food that we all enjoy. They want the meat to be in that small window of just being done, not over done and falling apart. At the Ohio Smoked Meat & BBQ Festival, the family-oriented herd of TEAM RINE-O got closer to finding that small window of taste that the Judges are looking for. Greg, TJ and Tonya, Randy and Janet, Steve and Nic Rine broke through the smoke and got “The Walk”, 10th place in ribs, and “The Call”, 13th in pulled pork, just ½ point away from making the walk in the pork category. It should be noted, some teams are competing on the circuit for 2 or 3 years before getting “The Call”. This is TEAM RINE-O’s first year, and only the third contest that they entered, that
was sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society. This contest was also the final battle in the quest to find the ultimate BBQ team in Ohio. Teams came from all over Ohio and the United States to compete in Ohio’s first BBQ Series. Hoosier Crawdaddy came in first, followed by Whiskey Bent BBQ and Timothy T & BBQ High-Rollers. TEAM
RINE-O finished in a respectable 11th place. All in all, the weekend was an inspiring one, with TEAM RINE-O looking forward to next year’s series. TEAM RINE-O is a member of the Mid-Atlantic BBQ Association and the Kansas City BBQ Society, both of which are dedicated to promoting goodwill combined with great BBQ. They would also like to thank their families and friends, who poked, prodded and helped them to compete, or maybe they just loved all the great BBQ at the practice runs. TEAM RINE-O would like to thank their sponsors and friends that helped them along the way: Collins Meat Market, Buehlers, Joe & Becki Guinther, Dave Lear, Mary Countryman, Scott and Pam Grissett, Larry Farrell, Rich and Denise Miller, Coshocton VFW 2040, Coshocton Amvets Post 36, Mike and Teresa Darr, Johnny and Brenda Hamilton, Auer Ace Hardware, Skip’s Refuse and Ami Taylor. TEAM RINE-O would also like to acknowledge the help and friendship they received from their fellow competitors: Randy and Jan Morrow of Bronze Star, Tim with Can’t Stop Grillin’ and Rick and Andy of District Barbeque.

County Road 10 road closure extendedCoshocton County Engineer Frederick Wachtel announced construction crews will continue replacing a bridge on County Road 10 in Crawford Township through mid-January, weather permitting. Design issues and the winter weather are the reason for the extension. The work has forced the closure of County Road 10, approximately 0.1 mile north of County Road 227, just north of Chili. Suggested detour routes in the area would include County Road 227 to Township Road 227, to Township Road 228. This project is part of the annual replacement and maintenance
program conducted by the County Engineer. The project is funded, in part, through a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission and is being constructed by county crews. Coshocton County maintains 288 bridges on county and township roadways. We regret any inconvenience to the residents and traveling public during this extended closure. Anyone with questions may contact the Coshocton County Engineer’s Office at 622-2135 or visit them online at www.coshoctoncounty.net.

0THE COSHOCTON COUNTY BEACON WILL BE CLOSED
FRIDAY, DEC. 24TH & THE WEEK OF DEC. 27TH TO DEC. 31ST
The Beac nPositively Coshocton CountySo our employees and associates can enjoy the holidays with family & friends.
WE WILL RE-OPEN MONDAY, JAN. 3 AT 8AM
introducing 2011 portrait magazineThe team at Good Fortune Advertising LLC, the company that publishes The Coshocton County Beacon, is pleased to present to the people of Coshocton County the third annual edition of “Portrait Magazine”, a publication that we hope will provide you with an informative overview of our community. Portrait Magazine is designed to give you a glimpse into the many community service agencies, churches, government services and elected officials, plus the social service and educational opportunities that are available in our community when you need some help or guidance.
If you have requested The Beacon through free in-home mail delivery, you will find a copy of the 2011 Portrait Magazine inside this week’s issue. Consider it an early Christmas present! If you pick up your Beacon at area stores or businesses in the community – you can visit our office for a copy. Or, you may snap up one at Buehler’s, Baker’s IGA, The Chamber of Commerce, or other businesses in our community. You can also read it online by clicking the link on our website in early January. Our goal in producing an updated edition of Portrait Magazine for 2011 was to publish
and distribute to our community a high quality magazine with information about Coshocton County. This is especially significant as we celebrate the Bicentennial in 2011. There are many special events planned for 2011 and you will find a complete local calendar of events for 2011 provided by the Coshocton County Convention & Visitors Bureau. I urge you to thoroughly review this publication and seek out the groups and organizations that may interest you; from support groups and social services to dance to youth activities to phone numbers and websites for our elected officials, state and federal agencies and more. We made every effort to include information that we
thought you would find helpful and educational, providing email addresses and websites whenever available, recognizing that this form of communication is rapidly becoming more valuable in today’s digitally oriented world. We have provided an online digital version of Portrait Magazine on our website, www.thebeaconbuzz.com. We did our absolute best to ensure that this publication is complete and while we were persistent in pursuing that goal - we probably missed a few things that should have been included. As the owner of Good Fortune Advertising LLC, the company that published Portrait Magazine, I take complete responsibility for any errors and omissions in the content. Please let me know personally of any errors or omissions so we can correct them for the 2012 edition by sending an email with your information to: [email protected]. Thank you. I am once again indebted to our staff, the advertisers that supported this bicentennial edition of Portrait Magazine, and especially Beth Scott, who again compiled all of the editorial content through much diligent research, numerous phone calls and hours of typing. Thank you Beth! I would also like to recognize the rest of our winning team; Nicole Medley, who kept us on track throughout, Bryan Fox, our on-site graphics artist who compiled Portrait Magazine, including all of the ads, and our sales team of Nina Drinko and Sandy Harvey, who consulted with, and assisted many of our customers with their advertisements in Portrait Magazine. Thank you Team Beacon. You are great people. Finally, we would appreciate your shopping, dining, recreating and worshipping locally whenever you can, as our local businesses, restaurants, groups, churches and organizations are the ones that keep our community moving forward. We are grateful to everyone that helped make Portrait Magazine 2011 a reality. Thank you.
