Bluetooth Connection1. Download the app of "Gigo Commander" from Google Play or

App Store.

2. Launch the app and select the Bluetooth icon on the left-top corner. Your mobile phone or tablet will connect with the nearest Bluetooth receiver automatically. You can also manually select the Bluetooth receiver by long pressing the Bluetooth icon. It's suggested recording the device number of your Bluetooth receiver (in the format of G4-xxxxxx) and attaching it on the receiver; so that you can promptly select your receiver when there are many receivers nearby.

3. There are up to three motors to be controlled by the app.

4. Click the button on the right-top corner and start the programming. You can set up the motors rotate clockwise or counterclockwise per second. When you finish the programming and execute it, the motors will rotate accordingly.

What ways can we move things from one place to another?

Tony went to a building block factory for a tour. From the moment he entered, he saw a long conveyor belt slowly moving forward. There were many kinds of parts on the conveyor belt. Beside the conveyor belt were factory staff busy assembling and packing items. Tony asked the factory supervisor what was going on.

The factory supervisor answered with a smile and said, “This is called a conveyor belt; it is the greatest invention for mass production in a modern factory ever made. In the early 20th century, the founder of Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, introduced this assembly line to the world. It quickly exploded in popularity.

In the past, the factory employees needed to complete the entire production and assembling process by themselves. They had to buy and assemble the parts, and use different kinds of tools. Using this process created a large potential for many repetitive and wasteful actions during production.

However, if we were to instead use a conveyor belt, the staf f could be arranged as a line, with parts traveling via the conveyor belt much like a flowing river. This allows the workers to focus on only a few processes that all require the same tool. With all the tools and the parts nearby, it wouldn’t b e n e c e s s a r y a n y m o r e to spend t ime f ind ing and retr ieving them. This r iver-like line is called a “production line”. The conveyor belt is a very important tool in making th is p roduc t ion l ine work . S ince the invent ion of the production line, the efficiency of factory production has been improved tenfold. Therefore, w e c a n b u y a l l k i n d s o f products at a cheaper price!”

Automatic Drilling Machine

Tony used G igo 's 2CM b locks to make his own name. He f igured he could hang it on his schoolbag. To make it easier for him, Grandpa had suggested that Tony ask for a favor from the factory: to drill a little hole in the blocks for wires to go through. This way, Tony can place the blocks anywhere he likes. While visiting the factory, Tony asked the supervisor for this favor. The supervisor not only

willingly helped Tony out, he also taught Tony a lot about drilling machines.

The supervisor said “The drilling machine can drill a round hole in any kind of material. The material of the machine’s drill bit can be a metal, an alloy or even carborundum, depending upon the hardness of the material being drilled. Since the drill bit spins at a high speed while working, it produces a ton of heat. As a result, there are quite a few drilling machines that come with a cooling system. There are also water-jet cutting machines, which use a high pressure water jet as their drill bits.

Due to the wide range of construction projects, t he re a re many d i f f e ren t l y s i zed d r i l l i ng machines. The largest dril l ing machines are usually used for mining, or for digging tunnels through mountain that trains can travel through. Medium-sized drilling machines are typically used by both carpenters and electricians for home decorat ing and const ruc t ion. In the medical f ield, small dr il l machines are used in surgical operations. At the building blocks factory, drilling machines are used for drilling holes in the blocks so that they can be used for assembly or decoration.”

Can you tell how many of the holes in the tools and products were drilled by a drilling machine?

Col lec t ion BasketThe factory supervisor assigned several employees with a new project. They were allotted the task of placing the 10,000 building blocks that had been produced the night before, into separate bags of 100 pieces each. When the employees in charge f irst heard their new task, they had no idea how they were going to complete it. The supervisor suggested that they try out the factory’s newly purchased robotic collection basket.

Doubtful, the employees turned on the robotic collection basket. The loud sound of the machine starting surprised Tony, who stood nearby. He was amazed by what happened next.From the moment the robotic arm was powered on, Tony’s eyes were fixated on this magical collection basket. This robotic arm was able to smoothly and accurately collect 100 pieces bricks in an orderly fashion, and then place them into a bag. With this machine, it only took the employees less than a half day to easily complete their task! Tony was really impressed by this robotic collection basket. It was a brilliant design.

M e c h a n i c a l C l a wTony and the factory supervisor walked around the factory together. The supervisor kept explaining in detail the function of each station. Tony learned a lot from this tour.

When they walked to one corner of the factory, they saw that workers were moving a box of building blocks from the conveyor belt, to the next station for packing. Since the box of building blocks was quiet heavy, several workers were injured while moving it. The factory was constantly losing workers to injury. This worried the supervisor a lot. He turned around and asked Tony if he had any good ideas on how to solve this problem.

Tony though about it and suggested that they use a mechanical claw, which is similar to a claw crane. It uses one motor to control the claw, which can clasp onto a box of building blocks, while another motor controls the rack’s movement up and down. With this machine, the box of building blocks can be lifted up easily without the use of any manual labor. The workers only need to operate the machine in order to complete their task. The supervisor was ecstatic after hearing Tony’s great advice. He immediately asked his staff to look for any related equipment.

Turnover MachineIn the building block factory, Tony

randomly saw a giant machine that looked like a washing machine. He found out that during the production process, strong water jets were used to clean of f the ink on the sur face of some of the bui lding block. After the cleaning procedure, the blocks would be sent to an oven to dry. During the drying process, a turnover machine was required to flip the bricks over. This looked like a spa treatment for blocks.

This made Tony think about that how every time he had BBQ, he also needed to turn over the meat every once a while, in order to make sure every side of meat was cooked equally. When we BBQ, we use our eyes to tell when to turnover the meat; but in a factory, a high tech turnover machine is used to flip the building blocks over automatically. It doesn’t require human labor at all.

Tony saw that there were lots of buttons on the control panel. Out of curiosity, he discretely pressed some buttons. Suddenly, all of the building blocks c a m e o u t f r o m t h e t u r n o v e r machine still wet! This was because Tony had changed the setting for the turnover t ime. As a resul t , the building blocks flipped before they dr ied out . Ner vous, Tony immediately changed the turnover time back to its original setting. At the same time, he also though about how if he were able to use this kind of equipment for BBQ, then he wouldn’t have to worry about burning food by leaving it on the heat for too long.

Labe l ing Mach ineAll morning, Tony was helping out t he f ac to r y sup e r v i s o r doub l e -check the goods. They examined the goods by each carton according to the label on them. Because each label was stuck on per fectly, and the information was accurate, Tony was happy to the job. He only had to put in half the work, but he still achieved twice the ef fectiveness. Tony asked the supervisor which employee here had done such an

amazing and efficient job labeling. The supervisor smiled and told him that the “employee” was an automatic labeling machine.

The supervisor also introduced Tony to all the processes of the product ion l ine. Af ter product ion and packing, the nex t step is labeling. The label usually contains the item’s name, description, examination mark, barcode, warnings and notices, etc. The purpose was to let consumers feel comfortable and safe while purchasing the company’s products. The labeling machine can not only put labels on cube-shaped packages, but also on round-shape baskets and uneven and sloped sur faces. As long as the labeling speed matches the transit speed of the conveyor belt, the labeling machine can also be automated.

Inspection MachineWhen Tony came to the “inspection machine” station, he found that the machine there kept transferring the f in ished bui ld ing b locks f rom the conveyor belt, over to the recycling bin underneath it. Tony wondered, “Why does this machine keep dumping the finished building blocks? There must be something wrong with the machine!” He quickly ran to find the station manager so that he could take care of this matter.

Since the factory is now all automated, it took some time for Tony to make it to the control room. Breathing heavily, Tony dragged the station manager back to the station. The station manager thought something big must have happened, but once he saw the situation, he realized that Tony had misunderstood.

The station manager explained to Tony that this machine is an inspection machine. It inspects every single building block to make sure it qualifies before traveling on to the next station. The machine checks if the size of building blocks are correct, if the block’s appearance is smooth and complete, if its holes are accurately located, and if its screws were drilled tightly. If any aspect of a building block doesn’t qualify, then the building block needs to be discarded and won’t enter the next process.

Upon hearing the explanation from the station manager, Tony immediately understood how important this machine is. If there was no inspection process during production, then defective building blocks could go through the whole process. The defective building blocks couldn’t be on the market anyways, so this would just waste the resources and the time of the production line.

S o r t i n g M a c h i n eTo n y f e l t t h e r e w e r e s o m a n y interesting things to see in the building blocks factory, but because the factory was so big, Tony was worr ied that he couldn’t see all of them in time. Therefore, he decided to run to the next station.

Tony was running so fast that when he saw that an operator carrying a huge

paper box in hands had appeared at the corner, he couldn’t stop in time. Tony slammed into the operator and the box fell to the ground. The tiny building block connectors inside spread all over the floor.

Tony apologized immediately, and tr ied to help to pick up all the connectors. He found there were actually two different specifications of connectors, and that there was only a 5mm dif ferent in length between them It was impossible for the two of them to categorize these thousands of connectors in a short period of time. This would definitely delay the original packing schedule.

Neither of them had any idea how to fix this. Talking to himself, Tony mentioned that it would be awesome if there was a sieve here, much like the one used for filtering rice out in the countryside. The operator heard what Tony said and his eyes lit up. He told Tony that they could use the sor t ing machine in the factory. The original function of this machine is to examine the products’ size and to get rid of the little Styrofoam balls used for protection during transfer. We only need set up the sorting condition to be 2mm longer than the shortest connectors. This way, only the shorter connectors would be picked up during the sorting process. Soon the mixed connectors would be separated.

F o l d i n g M a c h i n eInside the factory, Tony walked alongside the assembly line to watch all the pile’s of not-yet assembled building blocks be packaged up into boxes. Tony volunteered to help fold the boxes. The station master responsible saw how eager Tony was, so he grabbed one hundred

boxes for Tony to assemble.

At f i r s t , Tony happ i ly fo lded the b o x e s i n a c c o r d a n c e w i t h t h e S t a n d a r d O p e r a t i n g P r o c e d u r e (SOP), assembl ing the boxes by f o l d i n g a l o n g t h e d o t t e d l i n e s . However, Tony quick ly found out that, not only were his hands getting sore, but it was taking a long time just to package seven or eight boxes. Tony decided it would be much faster if he could fold ten boxes all at once.

While Tony was feeling pleased with himself, the station master walked in. He saw Tony assembling the boxes, and told Tony to stop and take a careful look at the problems with his already assembled boxes. Tony was surprised to f ind that many of the f inished boxes had not been folded properly. Blushing, Tony sheepishly admitted that he didn’t fold them one by one. Some boxes were not folded on the dotted line; therefore, these set of boxes were crooked.The station master said manual-assembly often has this problem, after all, people have physical l i m i t s . A s a r e s u l t , m a n y f a c t o r i e s h a v e r e p l a c e d manual-assembly with folding machines. Machines not only operate faster than peop le, but it is also relatively easier to control their manufacturing errors.

Cur rent ly, the f a c t o r y ’ s a s s e m b l y l i n e r e q u i r e s m a t e r i a l s t o b e shif ted between two work uni ts , but due to the fac t that the assembly line is a straight line, it takes the robotic arm on the assembly line too long to move material from one end to the other. Everyone was hoping to find a way to shorten the distance between the two work units.

At that moment, Tony suddenly remembered a time from his childhood where he played on a carousel. He blur ted out, “You could use a rotating production line. If the production line is circular, and you put a rotating machine in the middle, then you could transfer goods along the circumference. Then the distance between any two points

will never exceed half the distance of the circumference.” The pro ducting crew ’s eyes l i t up, and they began experimenting with this new idea.

A carousel is a motorized ride found in many playgrounds. On the carousel’s plat form are many decorated horses (or airplanes, cars, etc.) for visitors to sit on. These seats can move up and down (but do not move around) while the carousel p lat form cont inuously spins.

Double-sided ProcessingTony saw that every stat ion at the building block factory seemed quite novel. The automation of the factory made the entire process of producing building blocks appear very eff icient to Tony. All of the processes occurring in each stat ion, and between each station, seemed perfectly matched for each other, allowing the highest level of production capacity possible.

At this point, the factory supervisor explained to Tony that, in fact, for every station, a lot of their operating time is spent on fine-tuning, in order

to maximize the factory’s productivity. For example, the time spent on the processing machine is twice that of other stations. This causes congestion at the processing machine every time, meaning that all the building blocks in the back must wait for the building blocks up front to finish being processed before they can be completed. No matter how fast the other stations are, the speed of production will slow down at this station

To address this problem, the installation engineers had developed a double-sided processing machine, which allowed the building blocks to be processed on both sides at the same t ime. Because i t cuts the processing t ime in hal f, i t makes the whole production line smoother. After listening, Tony understood not only how to make a factory to run smoothly, but also that spending a lot of time testing equipment is necessary for ensuring an efficient building blocks factory.

S o a k i n g M a c h i n eThere are a lot of processes that are involved in the production of building blocks at the factory. This leaves many pieces of dir t and fragments on their sur faces. These pieces of di r t and fragments can obviously not be delivered to children. How can this problem be solved? Tony thought, “How about we give these building blocks a bath?”

First, Tony needed to find a container, which could be filled with detergent for cleaning the building blocks. This was to be the bathtub for the building blocks.

Now that the bathtub was ready, Tony started thinking about how to get these building blocks in the bathtub. These blocks don’t have legs like humans do. They can’t walk into the bathtub by themselves. It would be nice if there was a helping-hand to hold these building blocks while giving them a bath.

“Right! I can make a mechanical robot arm.” Tony thought. So Tony took a motor to help provide power for the mechanical arm. Then he used some gears and a gear rack, so that the robot arm could move on a trestle. This way, the robot arm could now move the not-yet cleaned building blocks into the container of detergent for soaking. Af terwards, i t could then move the cleaned blocks to a sterile location.Happy with himself, Tony shared his idea with the factory supervisor. Thanks to this soaking machine, there is no longer a concern that kids may get dirty building blocks.

L o a d i n g M a c h i n eAfter having spent a while walking around the factory, Tony decided to go outside to get some fresh air. On his way out, he noticed there was a huge machine beside the factory. Its robot arm was lifting up

a car ton and pour ing out i t ’s produc ts on to t he back o f a truck. Tony watched carefully for a while before realizing it was a loading machine.

The most impressive par t was not that loading machine could p ick up the products and put them back down, but that it could move along the direction of an X and Y-axis. Therefore, it can perfectly load the cartons, layer

by layer, onto the truck. It didn’t require an operator. The machine was like a smart robot; it finished loading one container and continued on to the next one by command.

While looking at the loading machine as it operated, Tony felt that the motion of this loading machine was similar to that of a 3D printer. The piles of car tons on the truck looked like the piling of a model’s shape as it was being printed out. On his way back to the factory, Tony thought to himself how awesome it would if he could print out a giant robot for himself.

3D printing is a new technology can build a model in a very short period of time. In accordance with a digital model, it builds the shape of an object through printing out successive layers. This is usually uses for concept design of products.

Transportation VehicleSince he was lit t le, Tony was interested in vehicles. He would read magazines or watch TV shows about cars in his free time. Today, during his visit of the building block factory, he saw some veh ic les that were parked aside, wai t ing for products to be loaded. This reminded him that there are so many differently-sized vehicles around the world.

No matter which century we look at, vehicles have played a crucial role. Vehicles carried soldiers from one battlefield to another during war, and they helped transport goods between different cities on opposite ends of the Earth. Bec ause o f veh ic les , we saved a huge amount of time and human effor t that would have been spent on transportation otherwise. In real i ty, the main purpose of vehic les is to help us make our jobs more eff icient and convenient.

As technology keeps improving, many places have already replaced older vehic les with computer- automated vehicles, which do not require any human force to operate. This

can reduce the need for staff to pass through dangerous area or to work long hours under hazardous condit ions. In addit ion, automated vehic les complete tasks based on t he i r p re - se t t i ngs , and t hey c an work for long periods of time too. An example would be to deliver products from one station, to either another station, or to the warehouse.

F o r k l i f tTony love watching robot movies the most. He finds the coolest part of the movie is when a robot easily grabs a house, a big tree or, even a truck, and plays with them between his two hands. When Tony was little, he used to dream about one day becoming a robot; he wished he could be as awesome as a robot.

The station manager heard Tony’s wish and thought that Tony would be interested in experiencing a forklift, so he asked Tony if he wanted to try. The main task of a forklift in the factory is to move the completed building blocks packs from the production line to the warehouse. In order to let kids having more understanding for the operations of a factory, the factory reserves a teaching and experiencing

area especially for them. This way the kids can really experience the process by themselves.

Tony sat in the forklift located in the teaching and experiencing area. First, he moved the two iron forks on the front of the machine underneath the building blocks packs that were ready to be transferred. After making sure the products were stable, Tony lifted up the products to a certain height by controlling the forks. Then, he drove the forklift to the warehouse. Since the storage location was different every time, it was necessary to move to the correct location and adjust the forks to the suitable height first, before putting down the products. If the products weren’t piled up stably, there was a risk that all the products, including the previous packages, might collapse.

Tony tried this many times and truly found it incredibly interesting. Even though he himself couldn’t become a robot, he could now operate a robot to move heavy stuffs. The station manager also said that, because some tasks of forklift were hard to pre-program into the machine, it was still necessary for humans to operate them manually. In actuality, a lot of forklifts are already controlled by computers. Therefore, this has reduced the demand of manual labor to its lowest point ever.

C N C M a c h i n eTony walked to the next station. There he saw a giant and complicated machine operated on its own. There was no one nearby. He didn’t think about it too much. Actually, this was the CNC machine in action!

CNC is the acronym for Computerized Numer ica l Cont ro l . Th is mach ine c o m b i n e s m e c h a n i c s , e l e c t r i c a l machinery, hydraulic pressure, vapor pressure and optics all together, in a single machine. An engineer determines the machine’s operating procedures carefully, deciding which materials to use, and the location an angle of the cutting tool, based on the design of the final product. After finishing up these preliminary set ups, the engineer starts programming the route of the cutting tools. Then, he imports the program into the numerical control machine and prepares it for operation. Since the CNC is computerized, it is easy to modify its programming.

Compared to the decline of traditional machines, numerical control machines have become a key part modern manufacturing. The reasons for why CNCs are popular are that they reduce preparation times, reduce work loads for operators, eliminate potential human errors, and decrease labor costs. CNCs also accurately calculate processing time, as well as reduce the standby time of the production line, and the backing-up of the stock level. CNCs provide the highest level of efficiency

and accuracy by offering the best rotat ional speeds for the main shaft and cutting tools. At the same time, they also extend the lifetime of cutting tools. CNCs also have a reputation for good quality work, and stability, decreasing inspection times and eliminating a huge amount of production costs. Its programming can be changed by simple editing, increasing its versatility.
