Optional pockets are worked along with the body of the sweater. I encourage you to include the pockets. The pockets are not at all difficult and the really add to the functionality of the sweater. The pockets are worked in conjunction with the body of the sweater and only require minimal sewing. Begin Pattern: Left Side Collar Rectangle: CO 11 sts. P1. PM, P to end of row. Begin the small checkerboard pattern on the first 10 sts, K the last st. Continue to work the single st in Stockinette st and the 10 sts in the small checker board pattern. Work until rectangle measures 4.75” (5, 5.25, 5.5, 5.75, 6, 6.25)” ending on a WS row. Cut yarn and place sts on a double point needle.

Right Side Collar Rectangle CO 11 sts. P until 1 st remains, PM, P1. Begin the small checkerboard pattern beginning with Row 3 of the pattern. Continue to work the single st in Stockinette st and the 10 sts in the small checkerboard pattern. Work until rectangle measures 4.75” (5, 5.25, 5.5, 5.75, 6, 6.25)” ending on a WS row. Cut yarn and place sts on a double point needle. Sew the CO edges together, taking care to have both rectangles oriented so that the edge with the single st are on the same edge. With the longer circular needle, begin working in the small checkerboard pattern across the first 10 sts on the left side collar rectangle, PM, K1 (this is the last st from the rectangle), pick up 34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58) sts along the Stockinette st edge of the joined rectangles, K1 (1st st from the rectangle), PM, work the last 10 sts (of the right side collar rectangle) in the small checkerboard pattern. Set up Raglans Work across the first 10 sts (right border), SM, P2 (right front), PM, P1 (raglan), PM, P3 (sleeve), PM, P1 (raglan), PM, P22 (26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46) sts (back), PM, P1 (raglan), PM, P3 (sleeve), PM, P1 (raglan), PM, P2 (left front), SM, work across the last 10 sts (left border) in pattern. Continue working the small checkerboard pattern on the borders, and Stockinette st on the remaining sts while working the front and raglan increases as follows: Begin V-Neck and Raglan Increases: The v-neck and raglan increases are worked simultaneously as follows: The front V-neck increases are worked on the RS as a KFB on the st after the left border and as a KFB in the 2nd to the last st before the right border. These increases are worked every RS row 0 (5, 10, 15, 20, 23, 25) times, and then every 4 rows 9 (7, 5, 3, 1, 0, 0) times. At the same time, the raglan increases are worked as a KFB before and after each 1 st raglan every RS row 16 (19, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23) times, then every 4 rows 1 (0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1) time. Each raglan increase row will add 1 st to each front, 2 sts to each sleeve, and 2 sts to the back. After all increases are worked, the back contains 56 (64, 68, 74, 80, 86, 94) sts, each front including the border is 38 (43, 46, 50, 54, 57, 61) sts, and each sleeve, including the adjacent raglan sts, is 39 (43, 43, 45, 47, 49, 53) sts.
